Margaret Elisabeth McMaster

December 20, 1921- October 15, 2007

Margaret Elisabeth McMaster went to be with the Lord on October 15, 2007. Elisabeth was born to Walter Tillman Austin and Margaret Ann McClurg Austin in Mooringsport,  Louisiana, on December 20, 1921.

She married Herbert Que McMaster Sr. in Texarkana, Arkansas, on August 23, 1937. Mr. McMaster passed away in April 1999.

Elisabeth is survived by her daughter, Ann Bettini Ogden and husband, Buz, and son, Herbert Que McMaster Jr. and wife, Cheri; and daughter-in-law, Pam McMaster. Elisabeth was a loving grandmother and was survived by her grandchildren, Eddie Kotis and wife, Cathy, Robin Hale and husband, Keith, Herbert Que McMaster III and wife, Neile, Jennifer McMaster, Amanda and James Turnbough, Michael McMaster and wife, Jill, Mitchell McMaster and wife, Melynda, Dee Dee McMaster and husband, Cody, and Shelley McMaster; and her great-grandchildren, Kylie Kotis, Hunter and Hayden Hale, Christopher and Nicholas McMaster, Britton, Tristian and Dalton Hawes, Jensyn Reeves, Gracyn McMaster, Carrington and Camdyn McMaster.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Michael Austin McMaster and Walter Timothy McMaster; and her great-grandchildren, Kara Elisabeth Kotis and Brendan Michael Grahm McMaster.

Elisabeth McMaster was a retired medical office administrator, as which she worked for Dr. C.S. Patterson in Odessa,  Texas, until 1979.

Elisabeth McMaster will be missed, but the memories and lives of those she blessed will never be forgotten.

Funeral services for Elisabeth will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2007, at Baker Funeral Home Chapel in West Columbia at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Joe Constantine officiating.

Burial will follow at Restwood Memorial Park in Lake Jackson.

There will be a viewing on Thursday, October 18, 2007, from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Terese Octavia Learned

Terese Octavia Learned, 91, of Kingsland passed away on September 22, 2007. She was born to Thomas Harwood and Daisy Annice (Bryan) Lewis on April 14, 1916, in Bay City,  Texas.

Mrs. Learned was a 1936 graduate of the University of  Texas with a degree in English. She later went back and finished her master’s. She was an avid seamstress, played piano and loved to garden.

She is survived by her children, Barbara Oliver and husband, Floyd, of Kingsland, David Bryan Learned of Kingsland; grandchildren, Bret A. Oliver and wife, Sara, of Houston, Susan D. Oliver of Dallas; great-grandchild, Isabella C. Oliver of Houston; brother, Thomas Edward Lewis and wife, Mary, of Leakey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 29, 2007, at Gulf Prairie Presbyterian Church.

Interment will follow at Gulf Prairie Cemetery.

Lavada Childress Bruce

Lavada Childress Bruce passed away peacefully Monday, October 15, 2007, at the age of 95. She was born in Madison County,  Texas, on December 12, 1911, to Annie and Earnest Childress.

Ms. Bruce was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Andrew Bruce; their son, Donald Bruce; and her nephew, Tim Menefee.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty Awalt of The Woodlands; son-in-law, Bill Awalt; daughter-in-law, Ruth Bruce of Clute; grandson, Paul Bruce; granddaughters, Kimberly Awalt, Kristen Nash (Marc), Stephanie Meyer (Paul) and Kathryn Awalt; great-grandson, Peyten Nash; sisters, Pauline DeBerry of Conroe,  Texas, Louise Skains (Alan) of Madisonville,  Texas, and Inez Schluens of Garden Ridge,  Texas; nephews, Andy Childress, William DeBerry, Richard  Jones and Tom Menefee; and niece, Molly Holland.

A dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Madisonville and The Woodlands United Methodist Church, Ms. Bruce was a woman of deep faith and loved the Lord deeply. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but will rest for eternity in the arms of her beloved Savior.

Isaiah 40:31, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 16, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Madisonville Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 17, at the First Baptist Church in Madisonville,  Texas.

Caroline Richmond

Funeral services for Caroline Richmond, 98, of Angleton,  Texas, will be Wednesday, October 17, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church in Angleton,  Texas, with Pastor Steven King officiating.

Burial will follow at Peaceful Rest Cemetery in Brazoria,  Texas.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 16, 2007, from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Gardner’s Funeral Chapel in Angleton,  Texas.

Caroline was a member of the Eastern Star and a dedicated member of New Bethel Baptist Church until her health failed.

She passed away Friday, October 12, 2007, at Brazosport Regional Health System in Lake Jackson,  Texas.

She leaves to cherish her memories: two loving sisters, Lillian  Jackson of Angleton,  Texas, and Eliza  White of McBeth Community; one grandchild, Sandra Hall of Angleton,  Texas; seven great-grandchildren, Ronnika Frater, Tammy Grice, Rhonda Smallwood, Myesha Howard, Onika Brown, Osheka Gougisha and Bobby Grice Jr.; 15 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Thurman Law, Dennis Williams, Ronnie Hall, Reginald Shelton, Ray Brown, Terry Harris and Curtis Baylock.

Honorary pallbearers are De’Quan Grice, De’Von Dudley, Joseph McCreary, J Howard, Godfrey  White, Alvaris Jackson, Isreal L.  White Sr., Mark  White, Robert  White, R.J. Jones, Robert Jackson, Earl  White, Joel  White, Robert Grice Jr., Willie Lee Lewis, Carlton Gougisha II, Carlton Gougisha III, Jelani Neal and Joseph McCreary Jr.

John Herbert Trought

John Herbert Trought of Higginsville died October 12, 2007, at the age of 74.

John’s employers included Bell Aircraft in Niagara Falls, NY; the New York State Power Project; and the Gemini Space Program in Cape Canaveral, FL. John spent more than 13 years in the medical device industry. He worked in documentation, was manager of quality assurance and manager of International Regulatory Affairs for these companies that made heart catheters, heart pacemakers and intraocular lenses.

He married Charlene Elaine Gore on June 17, 1976, in Lake Jackson, TX. They lived in Richwood,  Texas, from 1976-1994 and Weston, Florida, from 1994-2001. They retired to Higginsville in 2001 to be near family.

He is survived by his wife; daughter, Brenda Mikell of Edison, NJ; and granddaughter, Carrie Lynn Mikell of Tampa, FL. John also is survived by his sister-in-law, Carol Dunlap of Higginsville, MO; his brother-in-law, David (Roxanne) Gore of Naperville, IL; 20 nephews and nieces; 22 great-nephews and great-nieces; and many dear friends.

John was a kind and gentle man with a great sense of humor who enjoyed many things in life and never complained about the many physical challenges he faced. He loved and was loved by many and will be missed by all.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 17th, at the Assembly of God Church.

Burial will be in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery.

Henry Eugene (Gene) Marcum

Henry Eugene (Gene) Marcum, 80, of Lake Jackson,  Texas, passed away Saturday, October 13, 2007, at Brazosport Regional Health System. Gene was born May 19, 1927, to Henry Leslie and Bennie Olive Marcum in Bogata,  Texas. Gene served in the U.S. Navy during World War ll. He obtained his degrees at East  Texas State Teachers College in Commerce,  Texas. Gene was a teacher, assistant principal and principal at Brazosport High School. In 1969, he became the principal at Brazoswood High School until his retirement in 1991.

Gene was a member and past president of the Rotary Club, where he was honored to be a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award. Gene was a member of Willow Drive Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Jean (Dotty) Marcum of Lake Jackson; two sisters, Glenna Boyd of Magnolia,  Texas, Louise Tipton and her husband, Charles, of Garland,  Texas; son-in-law, Larry Williams of Katy,  Texas; stepgranddaughter, Teri Williams of Katy,  Texas; sister-in-law, Mary Lilley Shaver and her husband, Archie, of Pittsburg,  Texas; brother-in-law, Robert Peterson of Dallas,  Texas; longtime family friend and neighbor, Betty Danford of Lake Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, and his daughter, Pamela J. Marcum Williams.

The family will receive friends 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lakewood Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Willow Drive Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott McKay officiating. Interment will follow at Restwood Cemetery.

The family requests donations to South  Texas Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1210 Beeville,  Texas 78102, or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Mary Jannise King

Mary Jannise King, 94, of Anahuac,  Texas, passed away Friday, October 12, 2007. She was born on February 12, 1913, to Annore Jannise and Hermance Blanchard in Church Point,  Louisiana. Mary King was a devoted member of Our Lady of Light Catholic Church in Anahuac, and an avid seamstress, quilter and gardener. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

Mary lived at Country Village Care in Angleton for the past 41?2 years. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to the staff at Country Village and to A-Med Community Hospice.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents; loving husband of 48 years, Carl King; five brothers; four sisters; one grandson; and one great-grandson. She is survived by her children, John Wesley King and wife, Betty, of Winnie,  Texas, E.J. “Joe” King and wife, Jackie, of Angleton, and Julia King Selman and husband, Lonnie, of Wallisville,  Texas; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Ceciele Connell of Raywood,  Texas, Hazel Lee Hylton of Beaumont,  Texas, Lily Estes of Lufkin,  Texas, and Pauline Shauberger of LaFayette,  Louisiana; and numerous nieces, nephews and good friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, October 15, with a rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m., at Sterling Funeral Home in Anahuac. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Light Catholic Church on Tuesday, October 16, at 2:00 p.m., with interment to follow in the Anahuac Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Mary.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Sterling Funeral Home, 1201 S. Main Street, Anahuac,  Texas.

Phillip M. Crow

Phillip M. Crow, 90, of Freeport passed away Saturday, November 10, 2007. He was born November 23, 1916, on Redbud Road in Henderson County, near Brownsboro,  Texas, the third son of Thomas Ross and Ara Crow.

Phillip is preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Neva A. Crow; his parents; sisters, Marjorie Crow and Zaleme Farmer; brothers, Tom Bill Crow, Guy Crow and Gus Crow; son-in-law, Tom Lilly; and grandson, James Buck Lilly.

He is survived by daughters, Martha Lilly of San Antonio and Ginny Eudaley and husband, Derwood, of Freeport; sons, Phillip Crow Jr. and wife, Glynis, of Reagan Wells and Paul H. Crow and wife, Penny, of Lake Jackson; brother, Clyde N. Crow of Brownsboro; sister-in-law, Jo Morgan of Texarkana; grandchildren, Megan Chipman and husband, Travis, Mat Lilly and wife, Massaya, Staci Smith and husband, Joedy, Paige Tracy and husband, Stephen, Ashley Crow, Griffin Crow and Ross Crow; five great-grandchildren; and many other loving relatives and friends.

Phillip attended school in Edom,  Texas, and graduated in 1936 from Brownsboro High School. Upon receiving a basketball scholarship, he attended and completed Kilgore College in 1938 with a social science degree. He then attended Sam Houston State College on both a basketball and football scholarship. He graduated with a B.S. in physical education and social science. Upon graduation, Phillip taught and coached for one year in Dayton,  Texas.

In June 1941, Phillip was drafted by the U.S. Army for service in WWII and received a commission from Fort Knox in late 1942. He was shipped to England and Germany as a platoon leader in the mechanized Calvary, B Troop, 11th Armored Division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, earning a battlefield commission to captain and also received several decorations, including the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster.

In 1942, Phillip married his college sweetheart, Neva A. Hansen of Freeport. After WWII, he attended University of  Texas Dental College in Houston, graduating in 1950. He practiced for 33 years in Houston, Freeport and Lake  Jackson before retiring in 1982. He was a 47-year member of the Ninth District Dental Society.

Phillip was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, in Freeport, where he gladly served in many capacities for 55 years. He served on the BISD Board of Trustees for 15 years, the last four as president. He served on the Velasco Drainage District board, being the chair for four years. He assisted in the early planning and development of the Nature Center and Planetarium addition to the Fine Arts Center in Clute. He also was a trustee and chair of the Nature Center and Planetarium. He served with the South  Texas Girl Scouts and the Brazoria County Association for Citizens with Handicaps. Phillip was a founding member of Brazosport Rotary Club and continued to serve with them for more than 50 years.

The family received friends Monday, November 12, 2007, from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. at Stroud Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 13, 2007, at First Christian Church of Freeport with Pastors Bob Bray and Gary McCormick officiating.

If desired, memorials may be made to the church of your choice, the Salvation Army of Freeport or Brazosport Cares.

The family would like to give special thanks to the caregivers and staff at Plantation Health Care and the A-Med Community Hospice for their loving care.

Lillian Ross Molina

Lillian Ross Molina, 82, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on November 11, 2007. She was born on May 14, 1925, in Smithville,  Texas.

Lillian is survived by her husband of 56 years, Arthur Molina; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Diana Molina; and her grandsons, Michael and Dustin Molina.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Clayton Funeral Home, 5530 Broadway Street, Pearland,  Texas.

A memorial service will follow in the chapel at Clayton Funeral Home.

Immediately following the service, interment will be at the Angleton City Cemetery. Officiating is Pastor Mark Butcher of Freeway Baptist Church.

Jack F. Brooks

Jack Brooks, trusted servant of God, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, reaped the rewards of his earthly labors, peacefully, in the morning hours of November 11th, 2007, at the age of 69.

He was born in Raymondville,  Texas, on December 18, 1937. Jack married his high school sweetheart, Vera, on March 31, 1957. After managing several H-E-B stores throughout South  Texas, he moved his family to Sweeny and was the owner of Brooks Grocery from 1969 to 1978. He retired from Phillips Petroleum in 1996. Jack was an avid Sweeny sports fan and could be seen regularly at all sporting events.

He was preceded in death by both parents, his sister and his brother.

He leaves behind his loving wife of more than 50 years, Vera; three children, Sammy and wife, Sharon, of Sweeny, Brian and wife, Paula, of Sweeny, and Vicki Johnston and husband, Dan, of Sugar Land; six grandchildren, Jennifer Florence and husband, James, Amanda Brooks, Bill Brooks, Julie McPhail and husband, Michael, Priscilla Brooks and Lori Beth Brooks; one great-grandchild, Blake Brooks; his stepmother, Ernestine Walton of Linden,  Texas; sister Susan Wallace of Mt. Home, AK; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.

Pallbearers are David Carr, Gary Fails, Clarence Lee, Robert Lynch, Glenn Salyer and Don Sides.

Honorary pallbearers are Don Dolezalek, Bill Brooks, Layton Golemon and Gary Wells.

Visitation was held at Baker’s Funeral Home on Monday, November 12, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at Sweeny Church of Christ on Tuesday, November 13, at 2 p.m. with Nathan Burrow and Glen Duncan officiating.

Burial will follow at Sweeny Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Jack’s family requests that memorials be made in his name to Sweeny Christian School, P.O. Box 156, Sweeny,  Texas 77480.

Arrangements are by Baker Funeral Home-West Columbia.
