Virginia (Gin Dawn) Dawn Tolbirt

Virginia (Gin Dawn) Dawn Tolbirt of Lake Jackson,  Texas, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008. She was born September 21, 1929, in Hempstead,  Texas, to Jesse and Kathleen Tolbirt.

She taught and coached in BISD for 38 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Jesse W. Tolbirt; and her sister-in-law, Evelyn Tolbirt.

She is survived by her nephew, Sonny Tolbirt of Juliet, Tennessee; two nieces, Kay Walters and husband, Kevin, of Lake of the Pines,  Texas, and Carlyn Searcy of Dallas; nine great-nieces and nephews and numerous great-great-nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lakewood Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lakewood Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gary Thornton officiating.

Miss Tolbirt wished to express her heartfelt thanks and gratitude for the kindness and loving care she received from Michelle, Tracy and the staff of Hearthstone.

Jimmy Ralph Downing

April 24, 1959 — July 11, 2008

Jimmy Downing, 49, of Bellmead passed away Friday, July 11, 2008, at a local hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 14 at Bellmead Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 15 at Restwood Cemetery in Clute,  Texas.

Mariya Sokolayanskaya

Mariya Sokolayanskaya, 84, of Freeport,  Texas, died July 11, 2008. She was born February 10, 1924, in Russia. She served in the military during WWII during the German siege of Moscow. She fulfilled her dream of coming to America in the year 2000 and the next eight years were the happiest of her entire life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nikifor Sokolayanskaya.

Mariya is survived by her two children, Larissa Sokolayanskaya and husband, Gerry Parmenov, Lybasha Hudgins and husband, Wess Hudgins; grandchildren, Jenifer Hudgins, Serge Bobylev and Elana Ivanushkina; and several great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Freeport Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2008, at the Gulf Prairie Cemetery in  Jones Creek with Father Sergge Vesslinovich from St. Constanine and Helen Serbian Orthodox Church of Galveston.

Jimmy Ralph Downing

April 24, 1959 — July 11, 2008

Jimmy Downing, 49, of Bellmead, passed away Friday, July 11, 2008, at a local hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 14 at Bellmead Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 15 at Restwood Cemetery in Clute,  Texas.

Jimmy was born April 24, 1959, in Bowie,  Texas, to Sune Ralph and Stella (Carver) Downing. He worked for Barsh Construction for more than 10 years and was a welder.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Lynn Hancock Downing of Bellmead; daughter, April Leah Thornton of Kansas; step daughters, Crystal Thorp of Montana, Angel Pena of Waco; step son, Jesse Sawyer of Montana; sister, Tracy Lamoureaux of Lake Jackson; grandchildren, Mathew Bohnert, Destiny Smith, Marissa Thornton, Kay Leah Thornton; step grandchildren, Alana Chaffin, Reubin Pena, Ariana Pena, Crystin Thorpe, Allysa Thorpe and Savanna Thorpe.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Tanya Denise Theis

Tanya Denise Theis left this world for Heaven on July 10, 2008.

She was a loving soul who will be missed by all.

She is survived by her son, Dylan Vermillion, age 7; her parents, Wayne and Lois Theis of Angleton,  Texas; two brothers, Greg and John Theis of Lake Jackson; her grandmother, Norene Theis of Bishop,  Texas; niece, Kaylee Theis; and nephew, Jesse Theis, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Tanya was preceded in death by her grandparents the Rev. and Mrs. Erwin Sanders and R.E. Theis of Bishop,  Texas.

She was born on April 18, 1975, in Angleton,  Texas. Tanya was taken from us too quickly. She will be missed by all who crossed her path. Tanya enjoyed spending time with her family and loved her son deeply.

Visitation will be Sunday, July 13, 2008, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Palms Funeral Home in Angleton.

Funeral services will be Monday, July 14, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1601 Henderson Road Angleton,  Texas.

Burial will follow in the Angleton Cemetery.

Marjorie Rae Miller Miron

Marjorie Rae Miller Miron, 86, longtime resident of Lake Jackson, died early June 16, 2008, in Houston,  Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Simon Miron; and her beloved son, Michael Edward Miron.

She is survived by daughter, Leah Rae Elewitz and husband, Larry Elewitz; and grandson, Chaim Elewitz of Dallas,  Texas; son, David Miron and wife, Bonnie Walker, of San Antonio,  Texas; daughter-in-law, Nancy Ehrlich and her daughters, Kelly and Robin; former daughter-in law, Lisa Krueger; brother-in-law, Nathan Miron; sisters-in-law, Goldie Mann and Ruth Rosenthal; close cousins, Bobby and Ann Fry, Helen Wepman and numerous other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Marjorie was born October 4, 1921, in Orange,  Texas, to Jehudah Benjamin Miller and Goldie Lillian Packman Miller. Her family moved to El Dorado, Arkansas, where she grew up and attended school. She was trained as a Laboratory Technician and was one of the early members of the National Laboratory Technicians Association, of which she was proud of throughout her life. She served her country in this capacity at the Veteran’s Administration hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas, and through her parents’ leadership in the El Dorado Jewish community eventually met and married Simon Miron in 1946 who was employed there at Lion Oil Company. The young couple moved to Galveston,  Texas, in 1947 where Simon was employed and eventually moved to Lake Jackson,  Texas, in 1960 when Simon was hired at Dow Chemical Research Division.

Marjorie was very active in service to her community throughout her life after her career changed to raising a family. She began her 40-year association with the Girl Scouts in 1955. During her service she had many roles, including being on the Council Property Committee for Future Development and being a senior advisor. She also received the honor of the Thanks Badge. She volunteered with Cub Scouts for a number of years.

Marjorie served as a member of the board of Brazosport Cares, was a charter member of JAKOB, the Lake  Jackson Jewish community organization. She volunteered at the Brazosport Museum of Natural History and the Lake  Jackson Beautification cleanup. She was a volunteer at A.P. Beutel Elementary School Library and held employment later in life with the Sears Home Improvement department and the Visiting Nurses Association.

Less well known were her many private acts of charity and compassion to members of the local Jewish community and others in need who came to her and Si’s attention. She frequently prepared meals for those who were in need and delivered them to people in Freeport, Clute, and Brazoria on an ongoing basis. Her family, many friends and those who knew her in various capacities will miss her.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Brazosport Museum of Natural History or any charity that supports feeding those in need.

Daniel Eli Wollam

Eli Wollam, 58, of  Jones Creek passed away Thursday, July 10, 2008, at his residence.

Memorial services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2008, in the Palms Funeral Home Chapel.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Eli was born May 23, 1950, in Freeport,  Texas, to Alfred Eli and Virginia Wollam. A retired Pipefitter for Dow Chemical, he was was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and trail rides. He served on the Board of Directors for the Brazoria County Trailriders Association for 20-plus years and was a member of Pipefitters Local 209.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Ora Don and Louise Wollam.

Survivors include his wife, Lisa Wollam of  Jones Creek; children; Charles Eli Wollam and wife, Gail, of Missouri City, Stephanie Wollam of Angleton; parents, Alfred Eli and Virginia Wollam of Danbury; step daughter, Kimberly Ambrose of Angleton; brothers, Ora Don “Skeeter” Wollam and wife, Bobbye Ann and Robert “PeeWee” Wollam and wife, Rachel, both of Danbury; and three grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers will be J.R. Johnson, Gerald Duke, Sam Hatfield, Johnny Archery, Doke Hall, Kenny Batts and Mitchell Peltier.

Arrangements by Palms.

Rosa Lee Morte

Rosa Lee Morte, 94, of Bay City passed away Friday, July 11, 2008, at the Matagorda Nursing and Rehab Center in Bay City.

Mrs. Morte was born in Dallas,  Texas, on March 15, 1914, to parents, John and Nell Boren Dorman. She was a long-time resident of Lake Jackson, before moving to Bay City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Morte Sr.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, George Jr. and Pam Morte of Bay City; daughter, Lynn Moline of Brazoria; and grandchildren, Bud Moline, Robert and Pili Moline, Jeanne Moline, Christy Griffin, Trey and Renea Morte, Todd and Donale Morte; and numerous great- and great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 14, at 2:00 p.m. at  Taylor Bros. Chapel with the Rev. Larry Macomber officiating.

Visitation will begin Monday morning at  Taylor Bros.

Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery with Cameron Smith, Ethan Morte, Josh Lugo, Bud Moline, Trey Morte and Sherman Griffin serving as pallbearers.

Services are under the direction of  Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City.

Alta Gay Williams

With her family embracing her, Alta Gay Williams transitioned into the loving arms of God, Friday, July 11, 2008. Alta was born on August 25, 1916, in Cotton Gin,  Texas, to Martha Charity and Andrew  Jackson Norris. She attended a one room school near Cotton Gin where she made life-long friends and developed a love for school. She graduated from Mexia High School and told stories of her father meeting her in a mule-drawn wagon to take her home to Cotton Gin for visits.

On October 31, 1938, mutual friends introduced Alta to N.H. (Sonny) Williams at a Halloween Party. Eleven weeks later on January 18, 1939, they were married. They moved to the Sweeny area in 1942 and raised their family. They were married 48 years. Alta loved fashion and was an accomplished seamstress making the clothes, including formals and coats, for her three daughters on a small Singer sewing machine. Alta was devoted to her family, making holidays special. She was known for her cooking and her kindness.

Alta was a member of First Baptist Church in Old Ocean for many years. In 1987 she joined the First Methodist Church of Sweeny and was a member of Monday Morning Methodists.

Alta Williams was preceded in death by her husband, N.H. (Sonny) Williams; her parents, Martha Charity and Andrew  Jackson Norris; two sisters, Florence Patton and husband, Jack, and Flenoy Sims and husband Marion; two brothers, Andrew Norris and wife, Helen, and Joe Mac Norris and wife, Tommie.

She is survived by her three daughters, Judy Potterf and husband, Ray, Dianne Williams and Karen Robertson Keenom; three grandchildren, Traci and Jason Potterf and Derek Robertson; nieces, nephews; and special great-nephew, Greg Meyer and wife, Kristi.

Visitation will be Sunday, July 13, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at  Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City,  Texas. Graveside service will be Monday, July 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sweeny Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Grayson Glass, long-time family friend. Pallbearers will be Frank Burttschell, Bobby Nairn, Les Davis, Bryan Jones, Tim Ryerson and P.O. Patrick.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Brazos Cares or First United Methodist Church of Sweeny. Online condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.taylorbros.net.
