Janette D. Beaty
- Janeatte D. Beaty born February 19, 1918 in Chicago, Il. died on January 22, 2001 in Torrance, Ca. after a short illness.
She and her husband, M.L. Beaty “Sarge” who preceded her in death in 1993, lived in Camp Wood for the past 30 years. In her younger years she attended the Music Conservatory of Chicago. She was a member of the Methodist Church of Montell. She played the organ for the Methodist and Episcopal church services in Montell.
She is survived by two daughters : Maria J. McMahon of Dallas, Texas and Shirley A. Mc Phaul of Torrence, California, son-in-law Douglas Mc Phaul, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Services were held Friday January 26, 2001 at the Methodist Church in Montell, Texas. Burial was in the Montell Cemetery. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Home of Camp wood, Texas.
RUTH FRASER CLOUDT
Ruth Fraser Cloudt died at Val Verde Regional Medical Center in Del Rio, Texas on Wednesday, February 28, 2001, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born January 2, 1921 in Weymouth, Massachusetts to the late Colonel Harry Carlton and Louise Schell Fraser. Ruth grew up following the family all over the globe as Colonel Fraser was a Chaplin with the U.S. Army.
Ruth spent two years at Duke University, then graduated from the Washington School for Secretaries, Washington, D.C.
During World War II, Ruth worked as a Red Cross volunteer in the blood donor section. Ruth married Frank Otis Cloudt on December 30, 1942 in the Old Post Chapel at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Following Frank’s discharge from the Army, the couple moved to the ranch in Edwards County. For a city girl, moving to the ranch was quite a different experience, but she adapted well and it was a life she loved. Frank and Ruth lived and worked together on the ranch until 1993 when she suffered a stroke.
Ruth worked for the Rocksprings School District as a teacher’s aide, library aide, office aide and taught shorthand while her children were in school.
Survivors are her loving husband Frank of 58 years, son Carl and wife Dava of Del Rio; daughter Ellen and husband Don Kothmann of Katy, Texas; grandchildren Rebecca and Wesley Rose of Schertz, Texas; Eric and Lia Cloudt of Del Rio, Texas, Will Kothmann of Austin, Texas; Katie Kothmann of Katy; great granddaughter Carma Rhaye Cloudt of Del Rio; special friend and caregiver, Linda Weatherly; sisters Betty Ganns of Riverside, California, Louise Holder of Memphis, Tennessee, special cousin Jean Williams of San Clemente, California, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and a son Frank Monroe Cloudt.
Memorials may be made to West Texas Boys Ranch, the Medina Childrens Home or charity of your choice.
Pallbearers were Eric Cloudt, Will Kothmann, Chester Cloudt, Jr., David Steffan, Mike Young, Bo Hutto, Zeke Bradford and Wesley Rose.
Services were held Saturday, March 3, 2001 at the Methodist Church in Rocksprings at 11:00 a.m. with pastor Nancy Littlefield officiating.
RAYMOND WILLIAM DIETERT
Raymond William Dietert, age 89 of Mountain Home, Texas died Thursday, March 1, 2001 in a Kerrville Care Center. He was born October 7, 1911 in Kerr County and was a lifelong resident of Kerr and Real Counties. He was a retired rancher and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kerrville and Leakey Masonic Lodge. He was a trustee emeritus of what is now Schreiner University. He was a ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church.
He married Merle Mildred Moore on October 28, 1931 in Anderson, Texas. She preceded him in death on August 3, 1998.
Survivors are numerous cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 3, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels with Dr. Sam Junkin assisted by Dr. Thomas W. Currie, III officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Rest Cemetery. Those who desire may make memorial contributions to the First Presbyterian Church or Schreiner University. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.
WALTER J. BURRELL
Walter J. Burrell, 91 of Beaumont, Texas, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Doctor’s Hospital in Groves. A native of Beaumont, he lived most of his life in Fannett and was a rice farmer and cattle rancher.
He is suvived by his sons, James J. “Jack” Burrell of LaBelle and W. Eugene Burrell of Fannett; step-daughter, Cecilia Ritter of Beaumont; six grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial contribution may be made to the LaBelle-Fannett Fire Department, 3473 Pine Tree Road, Beaumont, Texas 77705.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 4, at Broussard’s Mortuary Chapel on McFadden in Beaumont. Burial followed at Magnolia Cemetery.
GEORGE EDWIN POWERS
George Edwin Powers, 86 of Uvalde, Texas, died on March 3, 2001. He was born January 12, 1915 near Barksdale, Texas to Paul Elmer Powers and Mary Lola Wahrmund Powers. On October 7, 1936 he married Virginia Lois Blackburn in Uvalde, TX.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years Lois and four children: Three sons, Robert Edwin “Bob” Powers of Houston, Joe Marvin Powers and wife Nona of San Diego, California, Jerry Wayne Powers and wife Karen of Kerrville and one daughter, Patricia Ann Rodriguez and husband Joe of Del Rio.
He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Deborah Passwater and husband Tony of Houston, Michael Hardin and wife Karen of Uvalde, Nanette Miglio and husband John of Boerne, Kira Cornelison and husband Drew of San Diego, California, Joe Marvin Powers, Jr. of San Diego, California, Stephanie Moose and husband John of Kerrville, Paul Powers of San Antonio, Steve Powers and wife Patchouli of Austin and three step-grandchildren Isaac Rodriguez and wife Anna of Las Crus, New Mexico, Iris Rush and husband Ben of Houston, Isidro Rodriguez of Del Rio and five great grandchildren Tyler, Trent and Trevor Hardin of Uvalde, Nicholas and Tiffany Miglio of Boerne.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, one brother Joe Powers and one sister Pauline Fuller. Graveside services were held March 5 in the Barksdale Cemetery.
Herbert Garland Merritt
Herbert Garland Merritt, 68 of Leakey, Texas died June 9, 2001 at Uvalde Memorial Hospital in Uvalde, Texas.
He was born October 25, 1932 to Andrew J. Merritt and Jane Snedden in Brodhead, Colorado. He married Claudine Tierce on June 9, 1962, Herbert died on their 39th wedding anniversary.
Herbert was a veteran of the Korean War. For forty years he lived in Midland where he worked as a welder.
He is survived by his wife; Claudine of Leakey, Texas, two daughters; Jane Lindinger of Tyler, Texas and Beth Hobbs of Leakey, three grandchildren; two brothers and four sisters.
Memorial services were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 11, 2001 in the Nelson Funeral Home Chapel in Leakey. Arrangements were by Nelson Funeral Home of Leakey.
John William Scott
John William Scott, 59 of Bogata, Texas, died June 5, 2001 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paris, Texas. He was born July 16, 1943 near Sabinal, Texas, to George W. Scott and Lola Mae Rickey.
He was a graduate of Hondo High School and Sul Ross University where he earned degrees in education and agriculture.
John married Maxine Lowe on May 25, 1962. He was a life-time farmer and rancher, he started ranching near Van Horn before moving to Monahans where he owned and operated a feed lot. John bought land near Bogata and moved his family there in 1978.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1984, and is survived by his wife; Maxine of Bogata, Texas, three children; Russell Scott of Balmorhea, Elizabeth Scott Stowe of Avery and Bryan Scott of Bogata, two granddaughters; Jayelyn and Mc Kayla of Avery, he is also survived by his mother; Lola Mae Collins of Arlington and one sister; Martha Howell of Arlington, also including a half brother and sister; Willie and Cheryl Scott of Hondo.
Pallbearers were Russell Scott, Bryan Scott, Joe Craven, Scott Craven and Jim Craven.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2001 in the Nelson Funeral Home Chapel in Camp Wood. Interment in the Barksdale Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Nelson Funeral Home of Camp Wood.
J.R. Ortiz
J.R. Ortiz, 20 of Crane, Texas, died Saturday, June 9, 2001 in an auto accident in Crane County. He was born January 11, 1981 in Odessa, Texas. He had attended Crane High School and was a derrick hand in the oil fields. He lived in Crane all of his life and was a member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Eric Ortiz in 1993. Survivors include: his fiance; Kandi Finn of Crane, daughter; Felecity Ortiz of Crane, mother; Betty Ortiz of Crane, step-father; Pablo Rocha of Crane, brother; Gilbert Ortiz and wife Sabrina of Monahans, step-brother; Pablo Rocha III of Crane, sister; Elizabeth Leal of Yancy, Texas, grandparents; Leonard and Vicenta Hernandez of Camp Wood, Beto and Mickey Ortiz of Crane, Maria Morales of Mexico, nephew; Isiah Ortiz of Monahans and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Camp Wood. Interment in Camp Wood cemetery with Jose Villanueva officiating.

Roland Dale Fry & Russell (Bud) Mason
- Roland Dale Fry, 76, of Goldthwaite, Texas died Thursday, September 6, 2001 at Coryell Hospital in Gatesville, Texas. He was born to Jessie Lloyd Fry and Hazel Euginia Howell Fry on October 27, 1924 in Burnet, Texas. Roland married Mary Jean Bartlett on November 27, 1946 in Uvalde, Texas. They moved to Goldthwaite, Texas from Camp Wood in 1977. Mr. Fry was in the Navy and served in World War II. His occupation was a minister and church affiliation was the Church of Christ.
Mr. Fry is survived by his wife, Mary Jean Fry of Goldthwaite, Texas; three sons, Jerry Lee and wife Jackie Fry of Goldthwaite; Tommy Ray and wife Lonna Fry of Rocksprings, Randy Lloyd and wife Leigh Ann Fry of Ackerly, Texas; two daughters, Patsy and husband Daryl Ward of Goldthwaite and Melody Fry of Goldthwaite; thirteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one brother, Haldon A. and wife Ruby Fry of Barksdale, California; two sisters, Mary Lou and husband Bob Gibson of Uvalde and Blanch and husband Chester Foster of Abilene, Texas and numerous neices and nephews.
He was preceeded in death by his parents and one son Jimmy Fry.
Services were held Saturday, September 8, 2001, 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Goldthwaite, Texas and was officiated by Terry Jackson and Harold Ray Smith.
Burial was in the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery.
Russell Edward (Bud) Mason
Russell Edward (Bud) Mason, 88 of Leakey, Texas died September 14, 2001 at his home in Leakey, Texas. Bud, as he was known to all his friends was born in Jackson, Michigan on June 4, 1913 to Arthur Rudolf Mason and Mabel Ada Frobenius. He married Ella Maxine Houseknecht on February 2, 1934. They were together for 65 years.
He is survived by two daughters, Nancy Dawn Martin and husband Mason of San Diego County, California and Trudy Lynn Florence and husband Harry of Leakey; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Kathleen Forester, Joseph Francis Florence and Mason Arthur Martin; two great grandchildren, Vanessa Ann Martin and Anthony Michael (Buddy) Martin. He is also survived by an older sister, Irma Bagley of Reno, Nevada; two nieces, Molly Manley and Mary Terry Marshall both of Nevada.
Bud and Ella resided in Southern Michigan until 1958, they moved to Cardiff by the sea, California and resided there until they both fell in love with the Texas Hill Country and moved here in 1982. They were active in the community, actively studied the word of God, as members of the church in the Valley of Leakey. Both were baptised in the Rio Frio River. Faith in God sustained our dad after mom’s death in October of1998, and he did good works.
Services were held Tuesday, September 18, 2001 in the Leakey Floral Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. with Ray Miller officiating. The family request that donations be made to the Leakey EMS in Lieu of flowers.
Arrangements were by Nelson Funeral Home of Leakey.
Marshall David Fish
Marshall Davis Fish 43, of Barksdale, Texas died February 16, 2002 in an auto accident on interstate 10 near Schulenberg, Texas. Born June 5, 1958 in Abilene, Texas.
He is survived by his parents, Sam and Linda Fish of Barksdale; grandfather, J. D. Thomas of Abilene, two daughters, Jessica and Kristi Fish of Troy, Michigan; Texas; three brothers, David Lee Wright and wife Peggy of Camp Wood, Sammy Douglas Fish of Indianapolis, Indiana and Lucky Lee Fish and wife Tammy of Los Fresnos, Texas; nieces and nephews, Winston Wright of Lubbock, Texas, Lindy and David Adam Wright of Camp Wood, Scotty and Samantha Fish of Los Fresnos and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who loved him very much.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Deborah Gail Thomas Fish, in 1963.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Baxter, Johnny Bullard, Bryan Harper, Dan Koontz, Leslie Kramer, Robbie Sweeten, Monte Ward and Randy Ward. Honorary pallbearers were Jane Koontz, Efrain Nevarez, Albert Navarez and David Sweeten.
Services were held Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at 2:00 p.m.at the Nueces Canyon Church of Christ with Bryan Garnett officiating. Burial followed at the Vance Cemetery in Vance.

Robert Hardin Tobin
Robert Hardin Tobin was born June 7, 1897 in Blanco County, TX to Robert Houston Tobin and Teresa Ann Weathers Tobin. His ancestors included men who served in both America’s Revoluntionary War and in the Texas War for Independence.
In 1901, the Tobin family moved to Harper, TX where they were living when Hardin and his brother Nolan were recruited into the Texas Guard in 1917. In the spring of 1918, they arrived in France to fight in World War I. Hardin served in I Company, 141st Infantry, 36th Division of the United States Army. He was wounded in action and lost his brother Nolan in the fighting.
At the end of World War I, Hardin returned to Harper for 6 years and then moved to Rocksprings where he bought a four-section ranch in October, 1926. He married Gladys Bayley on October 19, 1926 in Goldthwaite, TX.
While Gladys taught school, Hardin ranched cattle, sheep and goats for 44 years. They retired in 1970 and moved to Fredericksburg, TX. Hardin and Gladys traveled extensively around the world and visited every country except Russia and China. They went on numerous cruises until her death.
During his life Hardin sent his nieces and nephews, great nieces and great-nephews to college. He was a lifelong Democrat, active in community affairs, veterans groups, and was a member of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church. He was also the last surviving member of the “Stick Club,” a reunion organization of the 141st Infantry.
In 1999, Hardin’s service in World War I was recognized when he was presented the Chevalier of the National Order of the Legion of Honor by the French government, an award equal to America’s Medal of Honor.
In an article published in Salute: The Newsmagazine of the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, a reporter wrote: “Robert H. Hardin is a hero. A hero not only for his deeds and accomplishments but for his spirit, his warmth and his honest caring for his fellow veterans.”
Robert Hardin Tobin died on January 30, 2002 in Fredericksburg, TX. He was preceded in death by his wife Gladys and 3 brothers and 2 sisters: Nolan Tobin, Marvin Tobin, Richard Tobin, Georgia Dorough and Grace Scarborough.
He is survived by a sister: Irene Roberts of Harper, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial may be given to: Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sons of the American Revolution, Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, or to the charity of one’s choice.
