Thomas Joseph Gernentz

Born: October 11, 1944 in Edinburg, TX

Departed: March 21, 2010

Residence: Bandera, TX

Service Date: Later Date

Service Location: Later Date

Thomas Joseph Gernentz was born in Edinburg,  Texas in the year of our Lord October 11, 1944, the youngest of 4 brothers, Glenn, Jack and Jimmy. Tommy Joe as he was known growing up was raised by his 3 older brothers and mother, Mary Ellen, due to his father passing away early in his life. The 3 brothers made a pack that Tommy Joe would not have to work the Dairy farm and would be able to play sports, having as normal a childhood as possible, giving Tommy Joe the opportunity to play baseball and football for Edinburg High School, graduating in 1962. Because of his brother's hard work and sacrifice Tom was able to excel in baseball and received a full football scholarship to the University of Wyoming, which is where he met his future wife and best friend Stacey. Tom was the starting Left Middle Linebacker in the #1 ranked Defense of the nation in the 1966/67 school year, culminating in the Sun Bowl Championship victory.

After graduating college in 1968, Tom joined the United States Navy and trained to be a pilot earning his "wings of gold" in 1970. Tom served in the Navy for 24 years retiring as a full Commander, and moved to a 100 acre hay farm in Bandera,  Texas and as he said; "started working his tookus off", after all farming is not a 9 to 5 job.

Tom is survived by his wife Stacey of 42 years, his 2 sons Thomas-Chris and Ryan and 2 older brothers, Glenn and Jimmy, and, plus 4 grandchildren; Stephanie, Cooper, Thayne and Paige. Tom was funny, kind, generous, giving, dedicated beautiful husband and father, and will be missed everyday for the rest of my life. We Love You

Dorothy was a wonderful and supportive wife, a loving mother and caring grandmother.

She loved to travel, taking several cruises and venturing to Mexico and Italy. She also liked to visit Montana during the summers where she enjoyed hiking and sight seeing.

She was active at First United Methodist Church and helped paint the murals for their Sunday School class rooms.

She married James R. Herrington, Jr., a young bombardier cadet in the US Army Air Force, on October 3, 1942 in Big Springs,  Texas. As an officer’s wife, she enjoyed the overseas assignment in Japan where she discovered her love and passion for art. Her formal training began with Faure Fuijio Harada in Tokyo, Japan. She was an ardent supporter of the arts community throughout her life time. "Most of my paints begin with splashes of vibrant and rich color with no preconceived idea. The painting develops as I work into the challenge of semi-abstract or non-objective design. A little piece of my soul finds it way into each of my paintings."

Dorothy loved Kerrville, as the Arts community and her friends allowed her to flourish as an artist and as a person. Above all she was a lady. She will be missed by her family and her friends who loved her and by those she touched during her life.
