John Martin Miedema
Born on May 22, 1923 in Haerlem, Netherlands
Departed on March 20, 2007 and resided in Kerrville, TX
Service Date: March 23, 2007
Service Location: Notre Dame Catholic Church
John Martin Miedema, age 83 of Kerrville, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2007 in a local hospital. He was born in Haarlem, the Netherlands. He was studying to be a civil engineer when his life took a different turn. In 1943, the Germans put him and many others into a forced labor camp where they were later liberated by the Russians. He eventually found his way home - by foot, by horse, and by train. He then joined the Dutch Navy where he spent the next nine years and became a Master Sergeant in charge of a construction battalion in various countries including Indonesia, Biac and New Guinea.
John received the distinguished service medal for his work. While in a correspondence program, he met his future wife, Bernadette; they made arrangements to meet, and fell in love. They were married on August 17, 1949, and spent more than 58 years together. They renewed their vows on their 50th wedding anniversary.
In 1956, the Miedema family found a sponsor family here in the U.S. which enabled them to come to America and begin their lives once again in Idaho. Their secondary sponsor was the Catholic Church which helped them to find a home in Spokane, WA where John became a carpenter. He then went to back to school and studied structural and architectural design, after which he worked for a number of companies including Sylvania, ISS, United Airlines, and Morton-Thiokol.
After retiring, he and Bernadette lived in their travel trailer for a few months before deciding to settle in Kerrville in 1987. John was involved with the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed playing the accordion to entertain others. He had a brilliant mind that could calculate at the drop of a hat. Their son, Ben, remembers the many camping trips they enjoyed as a family– to Sequoia National Forest, Yellowstone, and Canada, among others.
John taught by example and he will be greatly missed.
May he rest in the loving arms of our Father in Heaven.
He is survived by his wife, Bernadette Miedema of Kerrville; son, Ben Miedema and wife, Cathy of New Braunfels; sister, Ida Miedema of Haarlem, the Netherlands; sisters in law, Truus Miedema and Janny Schoen, both of Haarlem, the Netherlands.
