Ethel Mae Rainwaters

Services for Ethel Mae Rainwaters, 90, of Midland, were 10 a.m., Thursday, at Tomlinson Funeral Home Chapel, with Dub Mowery and Jene Baker officiating.

Interment followed at Malakoff Cemetery, under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home, Malakoff.

Mrs. Rainwaters died Feb. 8, 1999, in Midland.

She was born Dec. 23, 1908, to Sam J. and Lucy Bell Norton, the eldest of eleven children. Mrs. Rainwaters was a member of the Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, H. O. "Bum" Rainwaters; three infant children; one granddaughter and six sisters.

Survivors include; daughters, Jean Oliver of Malakoff, Joyce Simpson and Mary Toon both of Midland; son, Oran and wife, Betty Rainwaters of Springdale, Ark.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Wilson of Kaufman and Cleta Hopper of Cedar Hill; brothers, Sam Norton of Bradwell and Buddy Norton of Sherman; numerous other family members and a host of friends.

Jackie Erwin

Services for Jackie Erwin, 63, of Tyler, were 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 11, in the Eubank Memorial Chapel, in Mabank, with Rev. Dalton Porter officiating.

Interment followed in the King Cemetery in Henderson County, under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home of Mabank.

Mrs. Erwin died Feb. 9, 1999, in Tyler.

She was born April 19, 1935, in Dallas, to Carl S. and Carrie (Powell) Hooper. Previously of Seven Points, Mrs. Erwin had lived in Tyler for three years, and was Catholic by faith. She retired in 1983 from Xerox, and was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include; husband, Robert Erwin of Tyler; daughters, Patricia Ann Balatti of San Anselmo,  Calif., and Elizabeth Lehew of Tyler; sister, Martha Amelia McCollum of Seven Points; mother, Carrie Dee Hooper of Seven Points; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Robert Woodrow Crouch

Graveside services for Robert Crouch, 60, were 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12, at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery, with Rev. L. W. Dollar officiating.

Interment followed at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery, under the direction of Waxahachie Funeral Home.

Mr. Crouch died Feb. 7, 1999, at his residence in Log Cabin.

He was born Feb. 4, 1939, in Waxahachie, to George and Edna Crouch. Mr. Crouch had just celebrated his sixtieth birthday. Before retirement, he been employed for eighteen years with T. Ramey Company in sales and service. Mr. Crouch had lived in  Texas all of his life, and a resident of Ellis County for 20 years. He attended school in the Waxahachie I.S.D. Mr. Crouch loved his grandkids and enjoyed coaching soccer and being there for the people who needed him. His smile could light up a room.

Survivors include; daughters, and sons-in-law, Margaret and Pete Quinonez of Mabank, Traci and Elias Padilla of Red Oak; brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy and Mildred Crouch of Victoria, Harris and Billie Crouch of Waxahachie; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Larry Navarro of Waxahachie; grandchildren, Jason Lane, Justin Crouch, Autumn and Amanda Quinonez, Kristian Nash and Kambrie Nash.

Zona M. 'Shorty' Choate

Services for Zona M. "Shorty" Choate, 93, of Canton, were 12 noon, Friday, in Laurel Land Chapel, Dallas, with Rev. Steve Glosup officiating.

Interment followed in Laurel Land Memorial Park, Dallas, under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home, Inc. of Canton.

Mrs. Choate died Feb. 9, 1999, in Tyler, after a short illness.

She was born Dec. 30, 1905, in Dallas, to Andrew  Jackson and Willie Elizabeth Plew Chilton. Mrs. Choate lived in Dallas most of her life, and had been in a nursing home in Canton for the past five years. Mrs. Choate had worked for Nordis and McKelle in Dallas, and was a member of the Christian Church in Hutchins. She will be missed by all her family and friends. Mrs. Choate was preceded in death by her husband, John Choate; daughter, Katheryn Shofner Murray; granddaughters, Kay Murray and Pat Shofner; four sisters; one niece and one nephew.

Survivors include; grandsons, James Michael Shofner of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Gary Wayne Shofner of Birminghan, Ala.; niece, Virginia Hopkins of Canton; nephews, John Shelliton of Dallas and Guy Phillipy of Gun Barrel City; other family members and a host of friends.

Pallbearers included; Milton Sims, Oren Conner, Pat Boothe, Danny Shellito.

William 'Ed' McDonald

Services for William "Ed" McDonald, 75, of Payne Springs were 2:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12, in the First Baptist Church of Gun Barrel City, with Rev. James Jacobs officiating.

Interment followed in the Payne Springs Cemetery in Payne Springs, under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home of Mabank.

Mr. McDonald died Feb. 10, 1999, in Athens.

He was born Feb. 17, 1923, in Mart, to James Henry and Linda Lucille (Sheaflet) McDonald. Previously of Rockwall, he had lived in Payne Springs since 1962 and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gun Barrel City. Mr. McDonald was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, where he served in WW II.

Survivors include; wife, Geraldine McDonald; son, Charlie McDonald of Gun Barrel City; daughters, Sandra Hassel of Mabank, Linda Kuykendall of Gun Barrel City, Debbie Glaze of Killeen; sons, Tommy McDonald of Payne Springs and Robert McDonald of Vancouver, British Columbia; sister, Myrtle Lee Page of Kemp; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

Wesley W. Roodhouse

Services for Wesley W. Roodhouse, 82, of the Cedar Creek Lake area, were 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 6, at Memorial Chapel Restland, Dallas.

Interment followed in Restland Memorial Park, under the direction of Restland Funeral Home, Dallas.

Mr. Roodhouse died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at Baylor University Medical Center of complications from Parkinson's disease.

He was born Jan. 23, 1917, in Cushing. Okla. Mr. Roodhouse was educated at San Diego State University, the University of  Oklahoma and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After serving in the Navy, he worked for Chicago and Southern Airlines, which later became Delta Air Lines.

In 1953, Mr. Roodhouse joined Collins Radio Co., in Richardson. In 1969, he was named executive vice president of Collins and elected to its board of directors. In 1971, when Collins Radio merged with Rockwell International, Mr. Roodhouse continued as an excutive vice president and played a significant role in combining the businesses, his family said.

Mr. Roodhouse retired in 1985.

Survivors include; wife of 24 years, Glenna Belvin Roodhouse of the Cedar Creek Lake area; daughters and sons-in-law, Leslie Roodhouse Slama and Ronald E. of Aubrey and Gail Roodhouse Calder and Curtis H. of Austin; step-daughter, Gail Skiles Gibson and Robert C of Chicago; brother, Clyde W. Roodhouse of Seattle; and nine grandchildren.

In recognition of Mr. Roodhouses' devotion to his beloved canine companions, Shadow and Sparky, in lieu of flowers, the family requests the memorials may be made to the Cedar Creek Lake Humane Society (P.O. Box 43531, Seven Points,  Texas 75143; or the Dallas Area Parkinsonism Society (3003 LBJ Freeway, Suite 125E, Dallas,  Texas 75234.)

Jane Slagle

Services for Jane Slagle, 58, of Seven Points were held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, in the Eubank Memoral Funeral Chapel in Mabank with the Rev. Tom Hathcock officiating. Burial followed in the King Cemetery in Henderson County, under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home of Mabank.

Mrs. Slagle was born on August 7, 1940, in Ellis County,  Texas, to Aurther Wilburn and Vera Hobbs Hathcock and passed away Feb. 9, 1999 in Seven Points following a long illness. She had lived in Seven Points for the past nine years and was Pentecostal by faith. Mrs. Slagle was a member of Feninine Touch.

Survivors include her husband, Randell Slagle of Seven Points; sons Randell W. Slagle of Nevada, Tx., and Bruce Slagle of Seven Points; brothers A.W. Hathcock, Jr., of Gun Barrel City and Danny Wayne Hathcock of Crandall; grandchildren Amber Jennings, Randell Wayne Slagle, Jr., Brandi Slagle, Natalie Slagle, and Alex Slagle; great grandson, David Lee Jennings, Jr.

George Herron, Jr.

Services for George Herron, Jr., 65, of Seagoville,  Texas, were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999 in the Eubank Memorial Chapel in Mabank with Rev. Kellan Warren officiating.

Mr. Herron was born on May 14, 1933 in Epps, La., to George Sr., and Mellissa (Whatley) Herron and passed away Feb. 11, 1999 in Dallas. Previously of Cedar Creek Lake, he had lived in Seagoville for two years and was a member of Lively Baptist Church. Mr. Herron Retired in 1990 from Seagoville Paint and Body and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Cecile Herron; sons James Herron of Kemp; George B. Herron III of Combine; sisters Jan  Taylor of Kaufman; Lola Gilley and Maxine Gilley of Corpus Christi; Helen Barker of New York; brothers Bill and Floyd Herron of Kemp; C.C. Herron of Dallas; P. L. Herron of Arkansas; L.T. Herron of Corpus Christi; and five grandchildren.

Jim Ernest Crocker

Jim Ernest Crocker was born Dec. 13, 1930 to Frances E. Lundy and Alvin Crocker in Kemp, Tex. Jim passed away from this world and went to be with our Lord on Feb. 10, 1999, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 68 years old.

Jim was an industrial mechanic by trade and was employed by N.L. Schutte Foundation and Drilling. He had enjoyed working there for more than 33 years, where all of his co-workers were more like family than friends.

Jim lived life to its fullest and enjoyed many things. Two fo his favorite hobbies were hunting and fishing; however, the hobby he most enjoyed was his racing. Ager having seen only one race at the old "Fair Park Speedway" he entered the racing world and began reacing at the Devil Bowl in 1949. Although he raced many of the tracks, he made the Thunderbird Speedway his racing home. Jim had such a dynamic personality tht on ecould not describe him in only a few words. The many fans who followed him through his racing days knew his personality amd ability was shown in his racing.

He loved family gatherings and good food and was loved by all who had the priviledge of knowing him. He will be rememberd in our hearts forever.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Joyce; two sisters, Lilly Dinghy of New York, Irene Anderson of Oregon, 10 children, 28 grandchildren, five great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999 at 10 a.m. at Tomlinson Memorial Funearl Home Chapel of Seven Points. Officiating was Frank Upchurch and John Stephens. Burial followed at Prairie Point Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Mexia, 216 N. Sherman, Mexia, Tex., 76667.

Twaine Walters

Services for Twaine Walters, 69, of Gun Barrel City, were 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 4, in the First Baptist Church in Gun Barrel City, with Rev. Bryon  Jones officiating.

Interment followed in the Malakoff Cemetery in Malakoff, under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home of Mabank.

Mr. Walters died May 1, 1999, in Athens.

He was born July 26, 1929, in  Oklahoma, City, Okla., to Bill and Mariam (Faulkner) Golston. Previously of  Oklahoma, he had lived in Gun Barrel City since 1971 and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gun Barrel City, Lions Club, and Gun Barrel City Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Walters was the owner of Dairy Queen in Seven Points and Gun Barrel City, and former owner of Dairy Queen in Kemp and Mabank. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Survivors include; wife, Jody Walters of Gun Barrel City; sons, Tony Walters of Paris, Kenneth Howell of College Station; Daughters, Rhonda Hamilton of Mustang, Okla., Khristie Strzelecki of Murchison; brothers, Ed Walters of Rush Springs, Okla., Bob Walters of Corpus Christi, Carey Walters of Yukon, Okla; sister, Sue Huffman of Bridgeport; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and a host of friends.

Pallbearers were Howard York, Pete Steward, Bodie Thornton, Odis Sessions, Ivan Rash, Jack Salter.

Honorary pallbearers were R. W. Weir, Bill Manning, Johnny Godwin, Jerry Boles.

Dalton Porter

Services for Dalton Porter, 75, of Mabank, were held 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 5, in the Eubank Memorial Chapel in Mabank, with Mr. Keith Porter officiating.

Interment followed in the Kemp Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home of Mabank.

Mr. Porter died May 3, 1999, in Kaufman.

He was born May 2, 1924, in Kaufman County, to Dewey and Allie Belle (Wright) Porter. Mr. Porter was a lifetime resident of Mabank and was Christian by faith. Mr. Porter was a charter member of the Lions Club in Mabank, a recipient of Man of the Year Award from the Cedar Creek Lake Chamber of Commerce, voluntary mentor at Kemp Primary School and associated with Eubank Funeral Home of Mabank for many years as the Bereavement Support Group Counselor. Mr. Porter was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served in WW II.

Survivors include; his loving wife of 50 years, Betty Porter of Gun Barrel City; daughters, Sharon Porter and Sue Ann Porter of Wills Point; son, Keith Porter and wife, Renee of Sherman; grandchildren, Josh and Matt Porter; sister, Billie Belcher of Mabank and Dorothy Jean Locklin of Mabank; other family members and a host of friends.

Honorary pallbearers included Sonny and Johnnie Teague, Cozell and Stella McAfee, Bud and Marge Ackles, James and Eva Finley, Al and Jane Williams, Charlie and Helen Doss, Johnny and Anna McDaniel, G. C. and Vista Edmondson, Robert and Deborah Eubank and all the Eubank Funeral Home Staff.

Dr. Ben Lee Johnson

Services for Dr. Ben Lee Johnson, 60, of Athens, were held Tuesday, May 4, 10 a.m., at Dogwood Baptist Church. Interment followed at the Glendale Cemetery in Glendale,  Texas. Visitation was at Carroll Lehr Funeral Home in Athens.

Dr.  Johnson died May 2, 1999, in Athens, leaving behind a legacy of love. He used the gifts God gave him to minister to others as a servant of his Lord.

He was born on July 30, 1938.

His many accomplishments included valedictorian of Groveton High School, graduate of  Texas A&M University and Southwestern Medical School with honors, and recipient of Fellowship to the American Academy of Family Practice. He began medical practice in 1964 in Athens. He served as President of the Henderson County Fair board, the Kiwanis Breakfast Club, the Henderson County Medical Society and was the Chief of Staff for the Henderson County Memorial Hospital. He held memberships in the Henderson County Beef Cattle Committee, Young Life Adult Committee, Athens Jaycees, AISD Board of Trustees, the Levee District Board, and the College of Agricultural Development Council. His honors included the Woodrow Walker Memorial Award and the Joe B. Fulgham Agriculturist Award. He was loved and respected by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Preceded in death by his father, William Morrow Johnson, brother Wayne  Johnson and a nephew Brad McHaney, Dr.  Johnson is survived by his wife, Patsy Johnson, of Athens, his mother Edna Johnson, of Athens, two sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Pam  Johnson of Athens, and Christopher and Amy  Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri, two daughters and one son-in-law, Annelle  Johnson of Athens, and Jeff and Cathy Kirkland of Athens, two sisters and two brothers-in-law, P.D. and Florine Hamilton of Groveton, and Lyle and Frances Skeels of Beaumont, his grandchildren, Jessica Johnson, Ashley and Elyssa Johnson, Will and Katie Kirkland, and Caleb and Nathan Johnson, and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Pallbearers were Jim Kirkland, Buddy Anding, Calvin Gustin, Doug Humble, Lee Bush, Kenneth McGee, Bob Foster and Bill Key. Honorary pallbearers included Jon Edwards, M.D., Robert Risko, M.D., Paul Michaels, M.D., Robert Eckert, M.D., Nolan Geddie, M.D., Harold Smitson, M.D., Doug Curran, M.D., Steve Walling, M.D., Ken Lemmon, M.D., and Joe Ed Smith, M.D.

"But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint." Isaiah 40:31.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Ben L.  Johnson Memorial Fund, c/o First State Bank, P. O. Box 471, Athens,  Texas 75751 or to a charity of choice.

Paula Steward

Services for Paula Steward, 54, of Kemp, were 10 a.m., Saturday, May 1, at Roselawn Chapel, with Rev. Dub Henry officiating.

Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Steward died April 28, 1999, in Dallas.

She was born July 7, 1944, in Wichita Falls.

Survivors include; husband, Jessie Steward; son, Scott and wife, Aimee Steward; daughter, Sabra Steward; brothers, Bobby, James and Teddy Lewis; sister, Maxine Hutchings and a host of other loving family and friends.

Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
