Winifred Ann Poyner

Graveside services for Winifred Ann Poyner, 67, of Arlington were at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 13, 2003 at King Cemetery in Aley with Brother Troy Ambein officiating. Interment followed under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home of Seven Points.

Ms. Poyner died Thursday, April 10, 2003 in Arlington. She was born September 29, 1935 in Palestine. Ms. Poyner was a member of Church of Christ in Trinidad. She was a registered nurse for 16 years. Ms. Poyner was a member of Lake Area Kiwanis Club and served on Snyder City city council. She taught nursing at Snyder Community College for 16 years.

Survivors include her brothers, Richard Poyner of Arlington and Joe Poyner of Garland; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Visitiation was from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, April 12, 2003 at Tomlinson Funeral Home.

Daniel Manuel DeHart

Services for Daniel Manuel DeHart, 77, of Don's Port, Tool were at 2 p.m., Monday, April 14, 2003 at Friendship Baptist Church of Seven Points with Brother Billy Hatcher officiating. Interment followed at Trinidad City Cemetery under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home of Seven Points.

Mr. DeHart died Friday, April 11, 2003 in Athens. He was born March 23, 1926 in Baxter, Henderson County. He was a heat treater in aviation manufacturing. Mr. DeHart was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Seven Points.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy DeHart of Tool; daughter, Rolinda Ethier and husband Randy of Arlington; brother, Jake DeHart of Wills Point; sisters, Alpha Nelson of Lewisville and Opal Clendenning of Hedley; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation was from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2003 at the funeral home.

Janie Glenn Melton

Janie Glenn Melton, 65, of Gun Barrel City went home to be with her Lord on April 5, 2003. Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Eubank Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Don Wilson officiating. Interment followed at Kemp Cemetery. Mrs. Melton was born Feb. 6, 1938, in Kaufman County to Horace and Jewel (Williamson) Glenn. She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Athens. Suvivors include her husband of 47 years, Claudis (Claude) Melton of Gun Barrel City; daughter, Dr. Terri L. Melton of Cape Coral, Fla.; sisters, Geneva Trull of Kemp, Lillian Cotton of Des Moines, Iowa, Reubine Mayfield of Kaufman, and Nan Lane of Kaufman; nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.

Donna Teague

Memorial services for Donna Teague, 67, of Kemp were held 2 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2003, at Eubank Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Hensley officiating and under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.

Mrs. Teague died Friday, April 11, 2003, in Tyler. She was born May 7, 1935, in Wapanuka, Okla. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include husband, Kenneth Teague of Kemp; sons, Clifford and Karla Nail of  Oklahoma City, Okla., Robert and Milta Nail of Sachie,  Texas; daughter, Paula and Leroy  Woods of Yuma, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Katherine Lou

'Kittie' Green

Katherine Lou "Kittie" Green, 73, of Mabank passed away April 11, 2003, in Tyler after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be missed by family and friends. Memorial services were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at Eubank Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Glen Blackmon officiating. Mrs. Green was born Nov. 26, 1926, in Toledo, Ohio, to William Alva and Iva Lucille (Rackstraw) Wagenhauser. Mrs. Green and her husband, Byron, owned and operated the Scooters/Wheelchairs Too in Gun Barrel City. She was a member of the Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church of Dallas. Survivors include her husband, Byron Green Sr. of Gun Barrel City; son, Kevin Lowe and wife, Tammy of Colleyville; daughters, Kelli Brooks and husband, Bill and Lisa Lowe both of Colleyville; step-daughter, Beverly Jayne and husband of Shendandoah; step-sons, Benny Green and Byron Green Jr. both of Gun Barrel City; brother, Glen Wagenhauser of Gun Barrel City; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other family members and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Webster (Sonny) Lowe in 1995.

Carrol Gunnels

Carrol Gunnels, 86, of Trinidad died in Athens on April 9, 2003. She was born June 20, 1913, in Brownsboro to Samuel and Lenny Rogers Carroll, both deceased. Services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2003, at the Lakeside Baptist Church with brothers Floyd Loven, Frank Upchurch, and Ron Huckabee officiating. Burial followed in Mankin Cemetery.

Survivors include sons and wives, Gene and Goldie Gunnels of Malakoff, J.W. and Nell Gunnels of Trinidad, Bob and Wanda Gunnels of Kemp, Roy and Stacy Gunnels of College Station, Rick and Pan Gunnels of Magnolia,  Texas; daughters and husbands, Marcie and John Payne of Seven Points, Barbara and Clyde Tyre of Vivian, La., H. Joy and Ken Stone of Lake Fork, Irma Nicholas of Mesquite, and Carol and Short Tressell of Athens; 21 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, one sister, and spouse, Barney Gene Gunnels in 1988.

Pallbearers were Keith Tyler, Mobby Gunnels, Billy Pippen, Mark Tinley, Todd Gunnels, Joey Snowden, Louie Carroll, and Billy Gunnels.

Honorary pallbearers were grandsons, great-grandchildren and nephews.

Visitation was from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lakeside Baptist Church on Friday.

She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She lived her life for others, her philosophy for life, and she taught her children to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. She was loved by everyone who knew her and will be missed. She was a homemaker and also worked for  Texas Power and Light as well as a seamstress for many years at the Corsicana Hat Factory.

Edward 'Don' Steelman

Graveside memorial services for Edward "Don" Steelman, 69, of Dodd City, were held 1 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2003, at Hopewell Cemetery with the Rev. Terry Orr officiating.

Mr. Steelman was born in Dallas on Dec. 15, 1933, to Audie V. and Pauline Landtrip Steelman and passed away April 5, 2003, in Dodd City. He was a veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Steelman was a resident of the Cedar Creek Lake area near Kemp for many years and owned several businesses including Custom Fireplaces and The Garden Center Nursery in Seven Points.

He is survived by daughters, Donna St. Mary of Ill., Rhonda Robisbeaux of Irving, Sandra Windham and husband Scott of Florida, Kim Wolff and husband Joerg of Dodd City; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild; numerous cousins and a host of friends.

He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Jewel Herman Sanders

Services for Jewel Herman Sanders, 67, of Trinidad were held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at Tomlinson Funeral Chapel of Seven Points with Frederick Burns officiating. Interment followed at Crandall Cemetery under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home.

Mr. Sanders died May 28, 2003, at his residence. He was born April 21, 1936, in Three Rivers,  Texas. He was a retired carpenter and a member of the Pentecostal Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was preceded in death by parents, Jewel and Ora Mae Sanders; and brother, Sherman Sanders.

Survivors include wife, Sherlie Sanders; children, Mike Sanders of Rockport,  Texas, Ray Fivecoat of Corsicana, Wayne Fivecoat of Kemp, Terry Fivecoat of Kemp, Mark Fivecoat of Kemp, Debbie  Whiteside of Waco, Carolyn Abu-Salim of Garland; brothers, Bill Sanders of Corpus Christi, Lloyd Sanders of Galveston, Ward Sanders of Lytle,  Texas, and Glen Sanders of Rock Port.

Pallbearers were Ray Fivecoat, Mark Fivecoat, Michael Allen, Stephen Trinkler, Terry Fivecoat, and Wayne Fivecoat.

Visitation was from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, May 30, at the funeral home.

Clara Mae Shewmaker

Services of remembrance were held for Clara Mae Shewmaker, 88, of Springtown,  Texas, at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Anderson Clayton Bros. Funeral Home in Kemp, with the Rev. Dub Henry officiating. Interment followed at Shiloh Cemetery in Kaufman County.

Mrs. Shewmaker was born Clara Mae Dean, Jan. 8, 1915, in Ellis County to Claude and Ruth (Walker) Dean and died May 28, 2003, in Weatherford. She was of the Baptist faith. On June 30, 1934, she marred James Luther Shewmaker. He preceded her in death July 11, 1994, and a son-in-law, Larry Gord, preceded her Aug. 8, 1999. Her parents and four brothers also preceded her.

Dr. Thomas Shepherd Burkhalter Sr.

Dr. Thomas Shepherd Burkhalter Sr., born Sept. 27, 1919, in Sayre, Okla., and passed away at his home in Richardson Friday, May 30, 2003. His parents were Henry F. Burkhalter who was born in Rome, Ga. in February 1886 and mother Myrtle Kirby Burkhalter born in Waketon,  Texas, in 1883. Dr. Burkhalter graduated from Sayre High School, Sayre, Okla.;  Oklahoma University -- Bachelor and Master of Science degrees;  Louisiana State University -- Ph.d, analytical chemistry; he was Professor of Chemistry -- North  Texas State University, 1950-1952; Head of Freshman Chemistry --  Texas A&M University 1952-1958;  Texas Instruments, 1957-1985; Fellow in  Texas Academy of Science; Past President of the Dallas Section -- American Chemical Society; Senior Member AICHE; Consultant for National Bureau of Standards; Consultant to National Materials Advisory Board; Member of Presidents Advisory Committee on Electronic Parts;  Texas Instruments Director of Central Research, 28 years; Dr. Burkhalter served in the Navy/Air Force, 1944-1946; he attended Methodist and Episcopal churches all his life. Survivors include his wife, Mildred W. Burkhalter (Married Sept. 27, 1941); children, Dianne Tetreault, Kay Armstrong, Jana Wurfl and Thomas S. Burkhalter II; sons-in-law, Don Tetreault, Wil Armstrong and Mark Wurfl; two sisters; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Sparkman Funeral Home Chapel in Richardson with the Rev. John Drake officiating. Interment followed at 2 p.m. at Chinn Chapel Cemetery in Copper Canyon,  Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Shrine Children's Hospital, 3100 Sanford Ave, Shreveport, LA. 71103; Attn: Donation Dept. in memory of Thomas Shepherd Burkhalter Sr. with notation Burkhalter Family. The family received friends at the funeral home Monday, June 2, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Danny Ray Whiddon

Danny Ray Whiddon, 40, of Mabank went to be with the Lord on May 31, 2003, in Mabank after a brief illness with cancer. Service was 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Eubank Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James  Jones officiating. Interment followed at Payne Springs Cemetery. Mr. Whiddon was born July 9, 1962, in Dallas. He attended Duncanville schools for 12 years and graduated from Duncanville High School. He was employed as electrician for 20 years and an avid fisherman. A humble and quiet man, Mr. Whiddon was a great father and will be missed by all that knew and loved him. Survivors include his son, Levi Ray Whiddon of Kaufman; parents, Letha Mae and Herbert Whiddon of Mabank; sisters, Carolyn Rich and husband, Larry of Duncanville, Margie Tucker of Duncanville, Linda Whiddon of Dallas, Sherry Stapleton and husband, Rick of Duncanville; brothers, Rodney Whiddon and wife, Gayle of Duncanville and James Whiddon and wife, Valeria of Mabank; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Irene Payne

Services for Irene Payne, 92, of Gun Barrel City were held 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Eubank Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Don Teague officiating. Interment followed at Bullard Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.

Mrs. Payne died Saturday, May 31, 2003, in Arlington. She was born May 4, 1911, in Weatherford,  Texas. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include son, Joel D. Payne and wife, Iris of Arlington; seven grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Steven A. Zubkus

Services for Steven A. Zubkus of Gun Barrel City were held 10 a.m. Monday, June 2, at the First Prestbyterian Church of Mabank with Pastor Ron Holloman officiating. Visitation was Sunday, June 1, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Tomlinson Funeral Home of Seven Points. Burial was at Largent Cemetery in Lufkin under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home.

O.R. 'Ray' Hennington

O.R. "Ray" Hennington passed away on Monday, June 2, 2003, at the age of 82. Mr. Hennington was born in McCaulley,  Texas on May 28, 1921. He graduated from McMurry College in Abilene where he met his wife, Betty, and then served his country in World War II as a radio operator.

He was an avid Ham Radio operator all of his life and made friends around the world with his call of W5IWE. Mr. Hennington was the Controller for the Mail Order House of Montgomery Ward in Fort Worth for many years and retired in 1986. Upon retirement, the Henningtons moved to Cedar Creek Lake in Trinidad and recently moved to San Antonio last year. Mr. Hennington was an active member of the United Methodist Church and several Ham Radio Clubs.

He is survived by his wife, Betty M. Hennington and his three daughters, Iris Dodge of Peachtree City, Ga., Mary Hennington of Dallas, and Doris Pennington of San Antonio; two sons-in-law, Allen Dodge and Thomas Pennington; and six grandchildren, Kimberly Pennington Jones, Melissa Kay Pennington, Jamie Beth Pennington, Brett Steere Dodge, Lynn Goddard Dodge, and Mary Amanda Pennington.

The family received friends on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.

Services were 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Porter Loring North Chapel with Dr. J. Weldon Butler of Lubbock,  Texas officiating. Interment followed in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368-2454.

Chloe Madison Sumner Faires

Services for infant Chloe Madison Sumner Faires were held 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Tomlinson Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Maddox officiating. Interment followed at Kemp Cemetery in Kemp.

Chloe was born and died June 14, 2003, in Ennis.

Survivors include parents William and Amanda Faires; sister, Brittney Faires; brother, Dalton Faires; grandparents, Patty and B.J. Robertson of Ola,  Texas, Thad and Mary Price of The Colony,  Texas, John and Wendy Caldwell of Rowlett,  Texas; great-grandparents, W.O. and Iris Hare of Kemp.

Pallbearers were Thad Price Jr. and Osiel Esquivel Jr.

Visitation was from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2003, at the funeral home.

Georgie Irene Reynolds

Services for Georgie Irene Reynolds, 75, of Henderson County 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Tomlinson Funeral Home Chapel of Seven Points with Bro. James Howard officiating. Interment followed at Elm Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. Reynolds died June 16, 2003, in Athens. She was born Aug. 27, 1927, in Independence, Mo. She was a member of the Eustace Assembly of God.

Survivors include children, Janice Brock of Mabank, Wanda Floyd of Channel View, Brenda Loebig of Frankston, Lacey Reynolds of Houston, Joyce Van Patten of League City; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Lloyd E. Hoggatt

Graveside services for Lloyd E. Hoggatt, 73, of Athens were held 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Trinidad Cemetery with Bill Hamilton officiating and under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home of Malakoff.

Mr. Hoggatt died June 15, 2003, in Athens. He was born Dec. 20, 1929, in Yates Center, Kansas, to Emmett Paul and Glaudine DeAughter Hoggatt. He has lived in this area since 1972, and worked in contruction. Mr. Hoggatt was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church, and a member of the VFW. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include sisters, Maxine Tart of Trinidad, Joy Woolery of Thayer, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at the funeral home.

Walter Steven 'Steve' Ford

Walter Steven "Steve" Ford passed away suddenly in his home in Gun Barrel City on June 10, 2003. He was born March 26, 1940, at March Field,  Calif. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ann Nadine Ford and father, Walter Reid Ford, a decorated World War II hero. Mr. Ford retired from the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo,  Calif., after 32 years of service as a Senior Comptroller conducting the final inspections for new submarines. He moved from the Napa Valley of California to  Texas in September 1998 and resided in Gun Barrel City. Mr. Ford is survived by his sister, Judith Ann and her husband, Donald R. Smith of Payne Springs. Other relatives include his nephew, John L. Mathis and his wife, Donna, nephew, Allen R. Mathis, two great-nephews, Brandon R. Black and Dylan L. Mathis, and a great-niece, Halie M. Mathis.

Wayne R. Lacey

Wayne R. Lacey was born May 15, 1932, in Wetumpka, Ala., and passed away June 11, 2003. He was employed with Yellow Freight 23 years and  Jones Freight 19 years. Survived by wife, Audrey Lacey of 45 years; children, Brenda Howard and husband, Roger, Linda Trammell and Pery Lacey and wife, Belinda; grandchildren, Steven Robinson, Ellis Howard, Aaron Howard, Brittany Trammell, Cheryl Lacey, Jenny Lacey; great-grandchildren, Dalton Lacey, Rachael Robinson, Caden Howard, Lani Howard and Lexi Howard; sister, Helen Shearin and Mable McCrary, and a host of other loving family and friends. Preceded in death by son, Wayne Rex Lacey Jr. in 1994. Graveside services were at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation was from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Roselawn Chapel.

Johnie Melvin Watts

Services for Johnie Melvin Watts, 78, of Tool were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at the Anderson Clayton Bros. Funeral Home Chapel in Kemp with Mr. Solon Bailey officiating. Interment followed at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at the Millers Grove Cemetery near Sulphur Springs with Mr. Jerome Savage officiating under the direction of Anderson Clayton Bros. Funeral Home of Kemp.

Mr. Watts was born on Saturday, Oct. 4, 1924, in Millers Grove,  Texas, a son of the late John Mack and Mittie Mae  Jones Watts and passed away on Friday, June 13, 2003, in Tyler. He had lived in Tool for the past 30 years and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II. He was a member of the Trinidad Church of Christ. He was married to May Gene Pennington on Nov. 20, 1946, in Sulphur Springs. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mittie Watts, a brother, C.G. Watts and a nephew.

Survivors include his wife, Mae Gene Watts of Tool; son, Mike Watts and his wife, Dorothy of Van; daughter, Lynda Fahrner and her husband, Gary of O'Fallon, Ill.; grandchildren, Jason Watts and his wife, Laura, Jamie Watts and Kristin, Kinsey and Kori Fahrner, as well as great-grandchild, Campbell Watts; sisters, LaVern Cox and her husband, LeRoy of Pineville, La., and LaVera  Johnson of Mesquite; niece, Janet Pufahl; and nephew, Eugene Johnson, as well as numerous other friends and relatives.

The family wishes to extend a sincere and heartfelt "thank you" to the wonderful people at Hospice Homeplace and the Tyler Cancer Center.

Roy Alfred Gallagher

Roy Alfred Gallagher, 76, of Trinidad passed away Aug. 10, 2003, in Tyler. Services were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at Eubank Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Chick Cullen officiating. Interment followed at Baker Cemetery in Kaufman County. Mr. Gallagher was born Sept. 24, 1926, in Terrell to Robert Claude and Efrie (Thorn) Gallagher and was a member of the Cedar Creek Lake United Methodist Church of Tool. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific while in the U.S. Army. He was co-founder of Gallagher's Paint and Body Shop in Seven Points in 1976 and retired in 2000 when he turned the business over to his son, Randy Gallagher. Mr. Gallagher also worked for Doran Chevrolet for 25 years prior to opening his business. Survivors include his wife, Vonda Gallagher of Trinidad; sons, Gerald Robert Gallagher and wife, Lisa of Colleyville, Gary Wayne Gallagher and fiancee, Melissa Manning of Sunnyvale, Randal Ray Gallagher and wife, Danene of Payne Springs; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Gallagher was preceded in death by his son, Richard Joe Gallagher and sister, Claudia G. Martinez. Visitation was 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.

Della Mae Atherton

Services for Della Mae Atherton, 97, of Kemp were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at the Anderson Clayton Bros. Funeral Home Chapel in Kemp with Mr. Tim Stevens officiating. Interment followed in the Kemp Cemetery under the direction of Anderson Clayton Bros. Funeral Home of Kemp.

Mrs. Atherton was born on Sept. 18, 1905, in Arkansas, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Greenlee Jenkins and passed away on Aug. 7, 2003, in Kemp. She was married to Otis Atherton in 1924 and he preceded her in death in 1981. She had lived in Kaufman County all of her life and was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include her son, Frank Atherton and his wife, Betty of Kemp; grandson, Lynn Atherton of Dallas; and sister, Faye Mills and her husband, Thomas of Terrell; as well as numerous other friends and relatives.

Pallbearers were Bill Jenkins, Denny Smithwick, Jimmy Jenkins, Charlie Doss, Clifton Smith and T.C. Richards.
