A.L. 'Coot' Murphey

Services for A.L. "Coot" Murphey, 89, of Kemp were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at the Anderson Clayton Bros. Funeral Home Chapel in Kemp with the Rev. Dub Henry officiating. Interment followed in the Kemp Cemetery under the direction of Anderson Clayton Bros. Funeral Home of Kemp.

Mr. Murphey was born on June 9, 1914, in Kaufman County to the late Jeff and Betty Tharp Murphey and passed away on Aug. 7, 2003, in Kemp. He was married to Ruby Z. Young on June 9, 1934, in Kaufman and she preceded him in death on April 13, 1986. He had lived his entire life in Kemp and retired from L.T.V. as an aircraft mechanic. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Kemp.

Survivors include his sons, LeRoy Murphey and his wife, Sharon of Kaufman and Victor Murphey and his wife, Lucy of Kemp; daughters, Wilma  Whitehead of Kemp, Wanda Patterson of Kemp and Wila Ransdell of Kemp; grandchildren, Donna Rawdon, Jeff Patterson, Sonia Rose, David Murphey, Steven Murphey, and Harvey McDougald all of Kemp, Diann Walker, Cindy Stribling, Sherry Strempke, Christy Abanilla, LeRoy Murphey Jr. and James Scott Murphey, all of Kaufman, and DeAnn Danielson of Mesquite; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Leona Haney of Mabank as well as a large host of other friends and relatives.

Pallbearers were Jeff Patterson, Harvey McDougald, David Murphey, James Scott Murphey, Steven Murphey, LeRoy Murphey Jr., Brady Scott and Adam Rose.

Sara Jane Black

Graveside services for Sara Jane Black, 57, of Gun Barrel City were held 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, with the Rev. Kenneth Hensley and the Rev. George Yarger officiating. Interment followed at Cedar Creek Memorial Park under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.

Mrs. Black died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, in Athens. She was born July 9, 1946, in Kaufman County. She was a member of the Tamarack Ladies Club.

Survivors include husband, Virgil Black of Gun Barrel City; daughters, Dana Black of Gun Barrel City, Tina Newton of Payne Springs; brothers, Jimmy Hart of Portland, Ore., Grady  Jones of Portland, Ore.; sisters, Mary Perez of Dallas, Jo Ann Walters of  Oklahoma; four grandchildren.

'Coach' Norman Jett passes away after illness

Coach Norman Jett died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, after a long illness.

Jett, 69, was a longtime football coach at South Oak Cliff High School where he compiled a 201-59-3 record and three district championships. During his 21 years on the sidelines he coached many standouts, including Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Harvey Martin.

In a Dallas Observer interview, Martin said he would never have made it to college if it weren't for Coach Jett.

According to a Dallas Morning News story, in 1983, Jett was fired by South Oak Cliff High School Principal Frederick Todd, and later filed a racial discrimination lawsuit claiming he was fired because he was a white coach at a predominantly black school. The case reached the Supreme Court, which ruled 5-4 against Jett. Jett eventually received a $75,000 settlement in the case.

In 1982, he started Norman Jett Custom Homes. He developed two subdivisions on Cedar Creek Lake, as well as numerous other custom homes.

Jett received a Master's of Education Degree from East  Texas State University (now  Texas A&M Commerce) in 1957.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Loudine Jett.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Carol Russell Jett; children, Diana Lee Raines and husband, Buck, Toni Elizabeth Niles and husband, David, Sherri Allen and husband, John, Curt Russell and wife, Jennifer, and Todd Russell; 10 grandchildren, Jett and Jordan, Sunny and Autumn, Brandi, Carrie, and Josh, Taylor, Hannah and Zeb; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Jackie Jett and wife, Reba, and George Jett and wife, Dana; and his best friend, Molly.

Services were 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2003, at Furguson Road Baptist Church in Dallas with the Rev. Terry Blankenship officiating. Interment followed at Grove Hill Memorial Park of Dallas.

Pallbearers were George Jett, David Niles, Buck Raines, Leslie Jett, John Allen, and Bud Marshall.

Honorary pallbearers were Jackie Jett, Richard Hall, Dennis Maddox, Jerry Griffin, Ralph Hollywood, and Walter Matthews.

Woodrow A. Fuller

Woodrow A. Fuller, 83, of Dallas passed away Aug. 10, 2003, in Dallas. Services were held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at Providence Baptist Church of Tool with the Rev. Craig Freeman officiating. Interment followed at Tool Cemetery. Mr. Fuller was born Oct. 2, 1919, in Morris County to Archibald and Idabelle (Magers) Fuller. He was a member of the Ferndale Baptist Church and a retired automotive electrician. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served on the front lines of four major battles in the Pacific campaign and achieved a rating of Corporal T-5. Survivors include his daughter, Linda Fuller Briggs and husband, Lyndon; son, Joe Cook and wife, Bonnie; grandsons, Allan Cook and wife, Lucy, Jeff Schupbach and wife, Tammy; three great-grandchildren, Amanda and Brittney Fuller and Andrew Cook; sister, Marie McDowell. Mr. Fuller was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Mae Fuller on March 10, 2002. Family received friends Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.

Hazel O. Philpot

Graveside services for Hazel Orby Philpot, 83, of Athens were held at Lone Oak Cemetery in Kaufman County at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, under the direction of Anderson Clayton Bros. Funeral Home of Kemp. The Rev. Dub Henry officiated at the services.

She was born in Kemp Dec. 24, 1919, to Doc Carl Freeman and Lena Lakcs Freeman and died Aug. 5, 2003, in Henderson County. She married Julius Philpot in Greenville,  Texas, on May 20, 1939. Mrs. Philpot had lived in Dallas the past 50 years and only recently moved to Athens. She had been a member of the Westmoreland Heights Baptist Church in Dallas for several years. Two daughters preceded her in death, Connie Roberts on Dec. 12, 1999 and Judy Oleta Philpot on Dec. 17, 1939.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Julius Philpot of Athens; daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Tommy Lawhorn of Grand Prairie and Patricia and Edward Silva of Athens; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Johnie Phipot of Gun Barrel City; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Geraldine Evans and Freda Hamilton, both of Dallas; brother, R.V. Freeman of Dallas; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Jerry Don 'Pop' Hackler

Jerry Don "Pop" Hackler, 60, of Cedar Creek Lake, formerly of Oak Cliff, passed away Aug. 8, 2003. He had a construction company with his brothers and sons for many years. He was a very good artist and enjoyed drawing very much, and was a loyal Dallas Cowboy fan.

Survivors include sons, Scott Hackler of Cedar Creek Lake, Max and wife, Jennifer Hackler of Dallas; grandson, Nathan Hackler; brothers, George Hackler of Glenn Heights, Andly Hackler of Lincoln, Neb.; sisters, Joan Bly of Midlothian, Geneva Miller of Pittsburg,  Texas, Helen Brown of Sulphur Springs.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at 11 a.m. at West/Hurtt Funeral Chapel in DeSoto,  Texas.

Jadie Marshall Bell

Services for Jadie Marshall Bell, 91, of Mabank were held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at Lakeview Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Don Bell officiating. Interment followed at Elm Grove Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.

Mr. Bell died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, in Mabank. He was born March 19, 1912, in Henderson County. He was a road worker.

Survivors include wife of 67 years, Ellen Bell of Mabank; son, the Rev. Don and Elaine Bell of Mabank; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other family members and a host of friends.

Kristen Denise Huckabee

Services for Kristen Denise Huckabee, 21, were held at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Athens Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at 3 p.m. with Pastor Rich Dunbar and Bro. Run Huckabee officiating. Graveside services followed at Shelby Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home of Malakoff. Visitation for family and friends was Saturday, Aug. 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the chapel at Tomlins Funeral Home in Malakoff.

Ms. Huckabee was born Dec. 23, 1981, to David and Stephanie Huckabee and was a graduate of Athens High School and a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. She also attended Trinity Valley Community College and enjoyed playing in the band. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Select Jazz Band, and served as a Snap Dragon Mentor helping children learn to read. She was also an employee of both Brookshires No. 5 and Filipe's Mexican Restaurant.

Survivors include her parents, David and Stephanie Huckabee; brother, Steven Bradley Huckabee; sisters, Holley Nicole, Allissa Danielle, and Amber Lindsey Huckabee; grandparents, Linda Mingus of Athens, and Kenneth and Helen Huckabee of Malakoff; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Pallbearers were Glen Mingus, Lonnie Slocum, Dan Ray Huckabee, Dusty Wise, Bruce Litton and Joel Dilli.

Vela Vivian Middleton Simons

Vela Vivian Middleton Simons, 92, was born Aug. 3, 1913 and passed away March 11, 2006. Vela and her belated husband made their home in Balch Springs and had six children. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved to cook for her family, work in her garden, share her fresh vegetables and homemade goodies with others, and loved to play dominoes. She will be missed by all who knew her, but not forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Earl Simons; grandsons, James Michael Hinsley, Duane Ray Simons and John Allen Anderson III; a granddaughter, Dusti Danielle Williams; parents, Arter William Middleton and Lennie Florenia Middleton; brother, Whitley William Middleton and sisters, Nettie Naomi Cornell and Easter Eunice Lafon.

She is survived by her children and spouses, Jeanette and Jerry Barrett of Edgewood, Stanley and Francis Simons of Balch Springs, Reggie and Yavonne Simons of Dallas, Norman and Diane Simons of Houston, Danny Simons of Houston and Patricia and Jackie Geiger of Florida; 17 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.

A celebration of Vela’s life was held at Laurel Oaks Funeral Home in Mesquite with Rev. Al  Taylor and Rev. Roy Merritt officiating. Interment followed at Laurel Oaks Cemetery.

Lee R. Jasper

Memorial services for Lee R. Jasper, 70, of Mabank, were held March 13 at the Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home with Dr. Ron Holloman officiating.

Mr. Jasper passed away March 10, 2006 in Plano. He was born Feb. 18, 1936 in Casey County, Kentucky. He was an engineering technician by trade and was a member of the Plano Elks Lodge #2485. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Jasper had previously lived in Richardson and had lived in the Cedar Creek Lake area since 1992. He retired from  Texas Instruments in 1996.

He is survived by his wife Elise of Cedar Creek Lake; son Michael Jasper of Dickinson; son David Jasper and wife Tina of Plano; daughter Sandra Tutt and husband Joe of Rowlett; daughter Sharon Broussard of West Lake, La.; sister Lois Dause and husband Jim of Cincinatti, Ohio; 14 grandchildren, Jeff Walker, Clayton Jasper, Jason Rawlings, John Ybarra, Jake Ybarra, Cody Jasper, Lee Jasper, Joey Ybarra, Matthew Jasper, Garrett Jasper, Christina Walker, Tanna Jasper, Jessica Jasper and Michelle Jasper.

Roy P. Burris

Services for Roy P. Burris, 94, of Tool, were held March 12 at the Eubank Memorial Chapel with Rev. Phil McShan officiating. Burial followed at Tool Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home.

Mr. Burris passed away in Dallas Thursday, March 9, 2006. He was born in Egypt, Ark. on Feb. 20, 1912. He had lived previously in Dallas and moved to Tool in 1965. He retired from Allstate Insurance, was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tool and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

He is survived by his wife Bernice of Tool; son Fredie Burris and wife Ginger of DeSoto; daughter Shirley McShan and husband Guy of Bryan; brother Leon Burris of Jonesboro, Ark.; brother Kenneth Burris of Austin; brother Charles Burris of Egypt Ark; grandchildren Jeff McShan, Steve Burris, Phil McShan, Darin Burris, Brenda McShan and Sherry  Johnson and great-grandchildren Dylan Burris, Spencer McShan and Andrew Burris.

Pallbearers were Phil McShan, Jeff McShan, Steve Burris, Darin Burris, Stanley Rogers and Dennis Burris.

Dortha Grace “Dot” Arnold

Services for Dortha Grace “Dot” Arnold, 72, of Kemp, were held March 12 at the Cedar Creek Lake United Methodist Church with Rev. Chuck Weber and Rev. Irvan Anthony officiating. Burial followed at Tool Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home.

Mrs. Arnold passed away March 9, 2006 in Mabank. She was born August 21, 1933 in Van Zandt County TX, the daughter of Lee and Linnie Wilson.

She was a homemaker and had lived most of her life in Arnold HIlls and loved playing golf. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Sammy Wilson, brother Herman Wilson and sister Wilma Wilson.

She is survived by her husband Billy Arnold of Kemp; daughter Debra Lynn Gunderson and husband Charles of Kemp; daughter Dell Hamilton and husband Rodney of Kemp; brothers J. D. Wilson, C. D. Wilson and Darrell Wilson, all of Houston; grandchildren Tyler Hamilton, Brent Nickelson, Ashley Hamilton, Lynsey Nickelson, Brandy Kirland; great granddaughter Saylor Grace Nickelson.

Pallbearers were Tyler Hamilton, Brent Nickelson, Rodney Hamilton, Rick Smith, Charles Gunderson and Gary Parker.

Memorials contributions can be made to the Alzheimers Foundation.

Marge Puck

Marge Puck, born June 25, 1924 to Tucker Brewer and Gertrude Smith Brewer in Styx,  Texas, made her flight from this world on March 20, 2006 at her home in Gun Barrel City after a lengthy battle with cancer.

She was a charter member of American Legion Post 310 in Gun Barrel City and a life member of VFW Post 4376 Auxiliary in Seven Points. She was a member of the Styx Church of Christ. She had been associated with many volunteer services around the lake area. She served as a Gun Barrel City Council member for three consecutive terms, from 1995 until 2002, and served as mayor from 2002 until 2004. She served Gun Barrel City for a total of nine years and was instrumental in the growth of the city.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harvey Puck; her precious brother Jerry Brewer and her parents. She is the mother of five children, Sandra Mooney and husband Floyd of Tool, Jimmy Lehew and wife Sharon of Kemp, Bobby Lehew and wife Beth of Canton, and Paula Smith and husband David and Linda Cooper and husband Steve, all of Gun Barrel City. She is also survived by one brother, Kenneth Brewer and wife Winona of Mabank; 15 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild due any day, Harvey Scott Cooper. Services were at Eubank Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 23 with Mr. Ken Bell officiating. Interment followed at Shiloh Cemetery.

Services will be under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home.

Edward Leroy Pearson

Graveside services for Edward Leroy Pearson, 89, of Malakoff, were held March 20 at the Laurel Land Cemetery in Dallas. Arrangements were under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home in Seven Points.

Mr. Pearson passed away March 15 in Malakoff. He was born Feb. 5, 1917 in Houtzdale,  Pennsylvania to Edward and Katherine Galvin Pearson. He was self employed as a locksmith before his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 2004. He is survived by his children, Paul Pearson of California, Leroy Pearson and Bill Pearson, both of Arlington and Patricia Buckley of Dallas; one brother and one sister; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Peggy Jane Cole

Services for Peggy Jane Cole, 71, of Mabank, were held March 18 at the Eubank Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Byron  Jones and Rev. Dan Hawkins officiating. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Park in Seagoville under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home.

Mrs. Cole passed away March 15, 2006 in Gun Barrel City and was born Aug. 26, 1934 in Dallas.

She had previously lived in Mesquite, but had lived in Gun Barrel City since 1974 and was active in the First Baptist Church of Gun Barrel City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Cole Sr.; great-grandchild, Nicholas Stone; parents, George and Vera McMillen; brother, George McMillen and sister, Patricia Rogers.

She is survived by her sons, Donald Blaine Cole Jr. of Gun Barrel City and Ronald W. Cole of Baxter; daughters, Debra Long of Mabank, Pamela Pottorf and husband Scott of Gun Barrel City and Wendy Banghart and husband Kevin of Gun Barrel City; sister, Betty Moseley of Gun Barrel City; grandchildren, Dustin Earl Long, Christopher Cole, Colton Banghart, Cameron Banghart, Danica Mai McKinney, Crystal Stone, Destiny Pottorf, Sydnee Pottorf, Maddy Banghart and Amy Cole and great-grandchildren, Ryan Bauks, Justin Cole, Haley Ward, Kaylee Stone and Shelby Stone.

Pallbearers were Christopher Cole, Daniel Stone, Bobby Carter, Harold Rogers and Gerald Rogers Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Dustin Long and Roger Coker.

Memorial contributions can be made to the National Ovarian Cancer Society.

EMMA MELINDA BLEDSOE

EMMA MELINDA BLEDSOE, 47, of Mabank, passed away March 27, 2006 in Tyler.

Visitation at Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday with family receiving friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Eubank Memorial Chapel in Mabank with Rev. James A. McWhorter officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Creek Memorial Park in Van Zandt County under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bledsoe was born Oct. 5, 1958 in Yakima,  Washington. Previously of  Washington State, she had lived in Mabank since 1974. She worked as a florist in the Cedar Creek Lake area and was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Gavin William Taylor, in 2001. She is survived by her husband, Richard Bledsoe of Mabank; one son, Jason Bledsoe and his wife Krysten of Mesquite; two daughters, Amy  Taylor of Mabank and Tiffany Lea Doane and her husband Christopher of Gun Barrel City; her parents, Boogie and Bessie Bennett of Mabank; paternal grandmother, Cecile  Taylor of Mabank; a brother, Mark Bennett Sr. and his wife Suzanne of Kemp; two sisters, Sherrie Blaylock and her husband Jerry of Mineola and Ramona Reeves and her husband Stuart of Flint and two grandchildren, Faith Nicole  Taylor and Harmony Jade Taylor.

Pallbearers will be Jason Bledsoe, Mark Bennett Jr., Roger Stinson, Chris Doane, Tyler Wise and Scottie Samford Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Joshua Reeves, Jeremiah Reeves and Carey Samford.

MARTHA L. GOLDEN

MARTHA L. GOLDEN, born Sept. 10, 1927 in Jonesboro, Ark., passed away March 21, 2006 in Tyler. She lived in the Dallas area since 1960 and at Cedar Creek Lake since 1991.

She was a member of the Literary Club of Cedar Creek, Cedar Creek County Club, Classic Rod Runners Car Club, women's group at Cedar Creek Country Club Estates, 4-C ABLES, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Friends of Boating, Inc. and volunteered at the Tri County Library. Martha loved her church and was the first woman Senior Warden at St. James on the Lake Episcopal Church. She was an avid party bridge player.

She is survived by her husband,  Taylor W. Golden; sons, David H. Golden and Douglas C. Golden; daughter, Deborah A. Daboub; sister, Kathryn Brown; three grandsons, one granddaughter and serveral nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held March 24 at Restland Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at St. James on the Lake Episcopal Church at Cedar Creek Country Club. Both services were officiated by Rev. Jerry D. Morriss and Father Ted Nelson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. James on the Lake Episcopal Church, 1707 County Road 4022, Kemp, TX 75143.

Gelene Bernice Roland

Gelene Bernice Roland was born in Corsicana on Jan. 10, 1918 and passed away at Cedar Lake Nursing Home in Malakoff on April 8, 2006.

Gelene graduated from the University of  Texas in 1939. She taught elementary school in Blooming Grove. She married Earl Griffin of Corsicana and together they owned and operated the Allis Chalmers Tractor Company. After his death she married Orville Roland. She continued to live in Corsicana and worked for the Corsicana Daily Sun for several years. After her retirement party they moved to Cedar Creek Lake in Tool. They were long time members of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 5-14. Gelene was a member of the Home Extension Club, Cedar Creek Literary Guild, the Cedar Creek Lake Women’s Club and the Cedar Creek Lake United Methodist Church in Tool.

Gelene was an only child and was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Shelby Hicks. She is survived by her Uncle Nelson Roughton and her precious “companion” Lulu. She is also survived by her most beloved friend and neighbor, Sylvia Knight, with gratitude for her tireless devotion and kindness.

Graveside services were held April 11 under the direction of Griffin Roughton Funeral Home of Corsicana.
