Mason Palmer Gray

Mason Palmer Gray was born in Corpus Christi,  Texas on August 11, 2008. Mason passed away at his home in Scurry,  Texas on March 13, 2010. Mason lived most of his life in Scurry.

He is survived by his parents: Glenn and Lorraine Gray of Scurry, brothers: Brandon and Lewis Gray both of Scurry, sisters: Paige Gray, Grace Gray, Krista Holly and Britni Holly all of Scurry, grandparents: Maureen Palmer of Rhode Island and Monika and Phillip Bowling of Kentucky, great grandmother: Irmgard Breder of Germany, uncles: Jamie Hubbard, Shawn North, Ern Boss, Doug Boss, Bob Palmer and Roy Palmer, aunts: Lenore Balestracci, Sis North and Michelle Palmer and many other relatives and friends. Graveside services were held Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 2:00 at Mount Olive Cemetery in Scurry.

Graveside services were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

Sarah Oma Brandon

Sarah Oma Brandon, 94 years old of Mesquite, Tx., passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at the Christian Care Center of Mesquite. She was a former resident of Tool, Tx.

She was born February 26, 1916 in Altoga, Tx., daughter of the late John Craig Frair and Lola Francis Pigg. She married Robert Hugh Brandon April 02, 1939. She was a retired Registered Nurse from  Texas Womens University and Doctors Hospital in Dallas,  Texas. She was a member of New World United Methodist Church in Garland  Texas and was a founding member of The Cedar Creek Lake United Methodist Church in Tool, Tx.

She was a member of Cedar Creek Lake Womens Club, volunteer for Hospice of Cedar Creek Lake, volunteer for Library at Cedar Creek Lake, member of New World United Methodist Church.

Survivors include, Robert Hugh & Lynda Brandon Jr. of Garland, Tx.; Daughter, Carole & Mike Kerby of Dallas, Tx.; Sister, Wilma Jean Smith of Allen, Tx.; Grand-Daughter, Vanessa Gwynne Brandon of Garland, Tx.; numerous nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by parents, John & Lola Frair, husband, Robert Hugh,grandson, Robert Hugh BrandonIII, sisters Arubea  White & Jimmie Spurgin.

Friends were received Friday, May 7 10-11 am at the Tomlinson Funeral Home, Seven Points,  Texas. Followed by graveside service at 11:30 am in Tool Cemetery, Tool, Tx.

The family request in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Cedar Creek Lake United Methodist Church & to Christian Care Hospice, 1000 Wiggins Parkway, Mesquite, Tx. 75150

Danny Ray Key

A military graveside service for Danny Ray Key, 63, of Eustace were held on Wednesday May 19, 2010 at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home, Canton. Burial followed at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas.

He passed away May 14, 2010 in Eustace. Danny was born February 27, 1947 in Athens to G.D. Key and Virgie Abbott Key.

He graduated from Eustace High School in 1996. Danny entered the United States Army in 1967, served in the Vietnam conflict and received Honorable Discharge in 1969. Danny received two Purple Hearts, the Army Commendation Medal and other campaign and service medals. After serving in the Army, Danny worked at several companies before going to work for Dynamic Rubber in Athens where he worked for over 20 years. Danny enjoyed the outdoors and loved to drive his favorite pickup around the East  Texas area to sample different restaurants.

Danny was preceded in death by Father, G.D. Key.

Surviving are mother, Virgie Key of Eustace, sister and brother in law, Vicki and Bob Travis of Carrollton; brother and sister in law, James and Irene Key of Eustace; nephews, Robert Sullivan of Waxahachie, Aaron Sullivan of Dallas and Bryant Key of Eustace; niece, Rene’ Riek of Bedford and several grand nephews and grand nieces.

Gene William Heck

Gene William Heck was born in Fremont, Michigan on July 8, 1944 and passed away in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on April 23, 2010. Gene is survived by his wife Adrienne Vollmer Heck, with whom he shared 38 adventurous years, and their kitties, Maggie May and Scruffer Mree. He was preceded in death by his parents Stena and William Heck, and his sister, Linda. Gene grew up in Rothbury, Michigan where he attended Montague High School.

Gene enlisted in the Army in 1965 and his career included graduating from Defense Language Institute, Monterey, California where he began a life long journey studying the Middle East. Upon graduation he received the General Maxwell  Taylor Award as the outstanding student in his graduating class of 321 students covering 22 languages. Gene was a foreign area officer and served numerous tours including overseas assignments in Turkey, Ethiopia, and US Embassy in Amman, Jordan.

He was a brilliant scholar and earned a bachelors degree, three masters degrees as well as a PhD in Middle East Economics from university of Michigan. He also completed a masters in public policy from Golden Gate University. He was fluent in Arabic and Spanish and completed the course work in Arabic for a masters in Medieval Middle East Economic History at the university of Jordan in Amman, Jordan. He was a prolific writer and is published in both English and Arabic. His book, Charlemagne, Muhammad and the Arab Roots of capitalism, was translated into Arabic as part of the Kalima project and honored as a major foreign work.

His love for the Middle East led to a 40 year career in Saudi Arabia beginning with an appointment in Government Relations at ARAMCO (Arabian American Oil Company) in 1970. He has resided in Saudi Arabia both as a government representative and in private business since 1984. Saudi assignments have included tours with US Treasury Department, Department of State, employment with local Saudi companies and various American companies. He served as Chairman of American Businessman’s Group (ABGR) and was Chairman Emeritus at the time of his death. He also served as a member of American Business Council of the Gulf Countries (ABCGC).

Over the years, Gene worked with Michigan Legislature and Governor John Engler both as staff economist and consultant. In this role, he authored several major economic studies and reports some of which received national awards and recognition.

Gene was an avid sports fan. He loved everything associated with University of Michigan and was a devoted fan of Michigan football and basketball as well as the Detroit Tigers, Red Wings and Pistons. He always said that he also supported Detroit football back when they had a team.

In addition to Adrienne, Gene is survived by his brother Edward Henry Heck and wife Joanne along with nieces Monica, Julie, Marstie, Lisa and Stephanie and their families, all of western Michigan. He is also survived by his in-laws including B.J. and Jack Vollmer, Cindy and David Clarke and their children Beth and Buddy, Charlie, Katie and Janie and Radonna and John Vollmer and their children, Cody, Darren, Rachel and Jack all of  Texas. In leiu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA of  Texas Capital Campaign, attn: Julie Siegel, 2400 Lone Star Sr., Dallas, TX 75212 (https://www.spca.ord/capitalcampaign) or a charity of your choice.

Services were held at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Chapel with Rev. Pancras Savarimuthu officiating. Burial followed in Mary Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Malakoff.

Syble Hyde

Syble Hyde, 91, of Mabank was born on December 4, 1918 in Huntsville,  Texas and passed away in Mabank on July 19, 2010.

Mrs. Hyde has resided most of her life in Mabank, graduated from Mabank High School in 1937 and loved making beautiful quilts.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Wayne Hyde; three sons, Roger Wayne Hyde, Henry Lee Hyde and Joe Dean Hyde.

Mrs. Hyde is survived by her son Glenn Hyde and wife, Donna of Mabank; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and other family and many friends.

A visitation was held at Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Services were held at the Eubank Memorial Chapel Mabank on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Brent Tucker and Rev. Don Teague officiating. Burial followed at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Van Zandt County.

Pallbearers were Jeff Hyde, Lance Luna, Sam Colleti, Kenny Collard, James Collard, Cody Hyde and Max Hyde Luna.

Arrangements under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home.

Faye Cook Southerland

Funeral services for Faye Cook Southerland, age 79, of Sand Flat, are scheduled for Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 2 pm. under direction of Eubank Funeral Home of Canton. She was born Feb.17, 1931 in Payne Springs, Tx. to Clyde & Lois Cook. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Charles E. Southerland.

Faye is survived by her daughter, Linda F. Southerland of Frankston, TX., her brother, Glynn Cook of Mabank, TX., her very special cousin who became like a sister, Yvonne Corbin of Sand Flat and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Faye was a working mother, loving wife, avid quilter and geneology buff.

Pallbearers include David Cook, Mike Cook, Johnny Adams, Larry Hall , Genie Jackson, John David Cook and honorary pallbearer, Earl McLauchlin.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wed., July 28, 2010 at Eubank Funeral Home-Canton.

Rosaline Madeline Moscrey

Funeral services for Rosaline Madeline Moscrey, age 84 of Dallas,  Texas were held Friday, July 30, 2010 at the Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Seagoville. The family received friends on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at the funeral home.

Rosaline Moscrey was born on January 3, 1926 in London, England; a daughter of the late Leonard and Rose Coker Dundas and passed away on July 28, 2010 in Dallas. She was married to Frank Moscrey Sr. on September 29, 1945 in London and to this union 5 children were born. Her loving husband, Frank Moscrey preceded her in death on August 8, 1999. She was a member of the St. Jude Catholic Church of Gun Barrel City,  Texas as well as St. Phillips Catholic Church in Mesquite where she served on the altar society and assisted in numerous activities in the church. She taught school at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Dallas for many years as well. She was employed by Gardner-Denver Corporation for 6 years where she served as a specifications writer. She is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Frank Moscrey Sr. on August 8, 1999, a son, Gerald Michael Moscrey on February 17, 1999 as well as a sister, Pearl Bury and a brother Leonard Moscrey.

Survivors include her Daughters, Carol Douglas and husband Bob of Lone Oak,  Texas; Susan Buchanan and husband Ray of Gun Barrel City,  Texas and Debbie Burden and husband Kirby of Willis,  Oklahoma; Son, Frank Moscrey Jr. and wife Shirley of Dallas,  Texas; 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, Sister, Babette Evans of Richardson,  Texas and Brother Gerald Dundas of California as well as numerous other friends and relatives.

Dorothy Lucille Howell

Dorothy Lucille Howell was born in Fairmount, Indiana on October 3, 1916 to Oscar Powers and Estella Huffman.

Dorothy passed away in Mabank on April 3, 2010. She was raised in Fairmount, Indiana and worked for the Ben Franklin Dime Store in Indiana. Later she worked for the Fairmount State Bank. Dorothy moved to Mabank in 2003. She was a member of the Grace Christian Church in Kaufman. On September 1, 1937 Dorothy married Orville Howell in Gas City, Indiana.

Her husband Orville preceded her in death in 1992. Dorothy is survived by her nieces Barbara Buck and her husband, Howard of Mabank and Jane Holloway and her husband, Doug of Mabank; nephews Melvin Ogden of Marian, Indiana and Robert Powers of Jonesboro, Indiana; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date at Grace Christian Church in Kaufman. Final arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

Robert L. (Bob) Easley

Robert L. (Bob) Easley of Mabank was called home April 5, 2010 by his Lord and Savior after a long courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born April 13, 1930 in Mabank to Robert and Mary Lindsey Easley. He lived in the Dallas area for many years before returning to Mabank.

Bob retired as a Quality and Production Supervisor from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company with 36 years of service.

In later years, he became active in the First Baptist Church, Lancaster,  Texas, and is now a member of the First Baptist Church of Mabank. He was active in both church’s programs and sang in the choirs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Verlon Engledow and Ima Easley, and a nephew Robert (Bob) McGuire. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Ross Easley; his daughters, Brenda Calverley and Tanyia Varnell and her children; other grandchildren, Nicole Moore, Natasha Quinn and Nerissa Stevens, all of the Dallas area; four great-granddaughters; two nieces and three nephews; one great nephew Waymon McGuire who had become very special in the last years of his life; and other family members. Long-time friends, George Hunt and family; Oscar Todd; the Lynch family, especially Bronson and Ben Lynch and many others.

Bob requested cremation and his remains will be laid to rest at Old Bethel Cemetery in Mabank. Memorial services for all friends and family will be held at the First Baptist Church, 113 Mount Vernon, in Mabank to celebrate the life of our loved one Robert (Bob) Easley on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 1 p.m. Memorials may be made to the church or a place of your choice.

Special thanks to the Vista Care Hospice and to Sherry Penley and Sarita Cawley of ETM Home and Health Care.

Mack McGibboney

Mack McGibboney, 83, MM3C, US Navy-WWII Veteran of Gun Barrel City, TX died under the care of Hospice at his residence on April 6, 2010 with his family by his side. There will be a Memorial Service at the American Legion on Sunday, April 18 for all his friends and family. His funeral will be held 10:00 am, April 23, 2010 at the Dallas Ft. Worth National Cemetery.

This is a PRIVATE FAMILY FUNERAL SERVICE. There will be a Memorial for him at 11:30 following the burial at the First Baptist Church of Euless in Euless, TX.

Mack is survived by his loving family: wife, Roberta McGibboney of Gun Barrel City TX; a son, Greg McGibboney and his wife, Monica of Canyon, TX; two daughters, Brenda Milner and her husband, Mark of Emory,TX; and DeeAnn Whitson and her husband, Jackie of Amarillo, TX. Step-Children: son Russell Brown and his wife Sandy from Arkansas; two daughters; Jan and husband Ted from Arkansas, and Patty and husband Frank from New Hampshire. Mack had 2 brothers and 5 sisters still living. He also had 17 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.

Lee Ammon Van Winkle

Lee Ammon Van Winkle was born to the home of Lee Ammon Van Winkle, Sr. and Virginia Talbott Van Winkle, in Baltimore, MD on September 3, 1940. He passed away on April 11, 2010 in Athens,  Texas, at the age of 69. He played guitar and was lead singer with the band The Shadow’s Four, Ltd. who he managed.

He served his country with the special forces in Vietnam and was a businessman who owned and operated a bowling alley, sold insurance, drove a truck for Stevens transport and C F I. Lee resided in Seven Points, TX prior to his death.

Left to cherish his memory are his dear companion, Karen Sharpe; daughters, Brandy McCallie and Sham Bartlett and husband, Robert; grandchildren, Scottie McCallie and wife, Jenny, Shalyn McCallie, Miranda Pidgue, Rebel Ray Bartlett; 1 great grandchild, Nevaeh; brothers, William “Bill” Van Winkle and David Van Winkle; sisters, Barbara Cokerell, Jane Harding, Margaret Bailey, the mother of his children Marsha Van Winkle, other loving family members and many long time friends.

Lee is preceded in death by his parents, brother Henry VanWinkle, and his sister Elizabeth Van Winkle. Funeral services were Thursday April 15, 2010 under the direction of Moorhead Epps Funeral Home in Gun Barrel.

Janet Louise Bovis

Janet Louise Bovis, 56, was born on November 9, 1956, and went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on March 29, 2010.

Janet loved her son Jeremy and made friends everywhere she went. Although she had many struggles, she was very full of life and gave of herself to so many.

We are grateful to the many people over the years who have reached out to help Janet.

She leaves behind her son, Jeremy Dwayne Bovis; step-father Cliff Pleake; brother, Phillip Bovis and wife, Karen; sister, Carolyn Jeffery; father Erving Bovis; nieces, Cassie Honea, Melissia Honea; nephews, Phillip Bovis, Jr., and Dylan Jeffery; and a host of other friends and family.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Pleake; brother Steve Bovis and sister Renee Janes.

A service of the celebration of her life was Saturday, April 3, 2010 at Moorhead Epps Memorial Chapel in Gun Barrel City with Pastor Tommy Merchant officiating.

Just as she embraced everyone, we embrace Janet in our hearts...

Vernon Flowers

Funeral services for Vernon Flowers, 84, Mesquite, are scheduled for 10:00 am, Monday, June 21 at Hilliard Funeral Home, Van with Ricky “Rich” Flowers and Randy  Jones officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery.

Vernon Doyle Flowers was born April 4, 1926 in Van Zandt County,  Texas to the late Theodore Augustus and Laura Guinn Flowers. He served in the US Navy during WWII and worked as a machine operator for Decking Packing Company. He was preceded in death by son, Jerry Short, brothers, Donald Flowers and an infant brother and sisters, Vernell Long and Avon Eads.

Survivors include wife, Mary Lou Flowers, Mesquite; son, Ricky “Rich” Flowers and wife, Debra, Poynor; daughter, Sharon Thompson, Mesquite; brothers, Harold Flowers and Lloyd Wayne Flowers; sisters, Evon Smith, Jo Ann Stanford, Barbara Jean Shipley and June Lafaye Patterson; grandchildren, George Thompson, Arlington and Kevin Thompson, Duncanville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm, Sunday night at the funeral home.

Thurman W. Morris

Thurman W. Morris, 80, died Thursday, September 30, 2010, in Athens,  Texas.

He was born October 7, 1929 in Rusk County, Tx., the son of the late Frank Morris and Velma Spain.

He was a retired Mechanical Tech for Dresser Atlas Co.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Morris and two daughters, Mary & husband Glenn Rich of Bartlesville, Ok., and Debbie & husband Gary Badgett of Fort Stockton, Tx.; four brothers, Lawrence Morris, Doyle Morris, Donald Morris and Alton Morris; three sisters, Betty Warlick, Ruby Henderson and Ginny Shank; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Dorothy Parsons.

Friends were received Sunday, October 3, from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. at the Tomlinson Funeral Home, Seven Points,  Texas.

Services were held at Tomlinson Funeral Home Monday, October 4, 2010 at 1 p.m. with Jason Ellis officiating.

Interment followed in the Tool Cemetery.

James E. McDonald

Gun Barrel City — James E. McDonald was born in Roanoak, TX on May 19, 1928 and passed away February 8, 2010 in Cedar Creek, TX. He is preceded in death by his son, Jimmy McDonald and brother, Floyd McDonald. James is survived by his wife of 33 years, Helen McDonald; daughter, Susan Andress; step-daughters, Donna Fish & Kay Clark; grandchildren: Dax, Madison, Stephen, Larry & Diana; numerous great-grandchildren and sister, Mary Windham. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 12, 2010 at Laurel Oaks Funeral Home with interment following at Laurel Oaks Memorial Park in the Bennett Family Gardens.
