PEGGY LYNN MARTIN WALL

PEGGY LYNN MARTIN WALL, 56, of Athens, passed away peacefully at her home on July 22, 2007 after a lengthy illness.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. M. Rhett Ansley officiating. Burial will follow in Trinidad Cemetery in Trinidad.

Peggy was born Sept. 23, 1950 in Athens to the late Coy Dale and Johnnie Belle Bradley Martin. She graduated from Rusk High School in 1968 where she was an accomplished Drum Major. She then attended Trinity Valley Community College where she was a Cardette and met her husband, Bruce Ray Wall. They were married Feb. 7, 1970 in Rusk. Peggy later transferred to Tarleton State University where she graduated with a teaching degree in 1975. Peggy taught business at Mabank High School from 1985-1991 then moved to Athens High School where she taught Special Education from 1998-2004. Peggy was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Bruce Wall; a son, Austin Wall and wife Alexandria Albright of Palestine; a daughter, Alexandra Gilmore and husband Elliot of Athens; a granddaughter, Madison Elizabeth Wall and a sister, Kathy Martin Elliot and husband Michael of Papillion, Neb. She was a beloved aunt to several nieces and nephews, Jonathon and Adam Stockstill of Nebraska, Jennifer and John Peters and Aaron Dipboye of  Oklahoma, and many loving cousins and loved ones in  Texas, Wyoming, New York City and London, England.

Pallbearers will be Larry Moody, Mark Lundy, Jim Henderson, Bob Davis, Ronnie McElroy and Bobby Rounsavall.

Her nephews and nieces will serve as honorary pallbearers.

If desired, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1301 S. Broadway, Tyler, TX 75701.

VIRGINIA VERMEULE

VIRGINIA VERMEULE, 87, of Gun Barrel City, passed away July 19, 2007. She was born July 19, 1920 in Manning, Iowa.

Previously of Anaheim,  Calif., she resided in Gun Barrel City for the past 37 years.

She is survived by her sons, Jim Vermeule and wife Toni of Mabank and Jack Vermeule and wife Nancy of Desert Shores,  Calif.; daughters, Joyce Beatty of Gun Barrel City, Judy Spears and husband Travis of Mabank and Janie Murphy of Hemet,  Calif.; sisters, Mary Grau of Long Beach,  Calif., Pat Welch of Seal Beach,  Calif. and Kaye Henkenius of Fallmouth, Mass.; 11 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward C. Vermeule in 1994.

Services were under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home.

ELLEN MARIE HARPER

ELLEN MARIE HARPER, 78, of Kemp, died July 18, 2007. Memorial services were held July 20 at the First Presbyterian Church of Granbury. Interment followed at the Holly Hills Cemetery in Granbury. Arrangements were under the direction of Martin Funeral Home.

Mrs. Harper was born Sept. 22, 1928 in Wichita, Kansas to Plez and Ione Clark. Plez served as business manager to the KFH radio station of Wichita. Ellen graduated from Friends University with a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences Degree in Home Economics in 1950. She also served as class president her senior year and was an active member of the Delta Rho Alpha Nu Sorority. She married Roland Harper of Wichita, Kansas on Nov. 22, 1949. After following Roland on the PGA Golf Tour for a short time in the early 1950s, they later settled in Fort Worth where Roland was the Head Golf Professional for over 30 years.

She raised three children, Lynn Marie, Craig Allen and Lawrence "Larry" Dale, supporting them all with devotion and love. She assisted Roland in his golf professional duties at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth for many years and was an example of Christian love and service.

She leaves behind a large family that will miss her greatly, along with numerous friends from Colonial Country Club, St. Giles Presbyterian Church of Fort Worth, First Presbyterian Church of Granbury and Pecan Plantation.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Plez and Ione Clark; her loving husband, Roland Harper and her son, Craig Harper.

Survivors include a daughter, Lynn Gee and husband Elden of Springtown; a son, Larry Harper and wife Fran of Kemp; a daughter-in-law, Marla Harper of Olathe, Kansas; her brother, Paul Clark of Lake Havasu, Ariz., nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation to the Roland Harper Memorial Scholarship Fund at  Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.

WELSEY HARRIS GERMANY

WELSEY HARRIS GERMANY, born July 14, 1952 died July 16, 2007 in a car accident.

He graduated as Valedictorian from Kemper military School and graduated from Western State College. He was a member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church and Dallas Country Club.

He was predeceased by his parents, E. Wilson Germany and Jennie Margaret Germany. He is survived by his sister, Joan Germany and niece Jennie Germany.

A memorial service was held July 19 at Cox Chapel at Highland Park Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers please make donations to C.A.R.E. at the Park Cities Y.M.C.A. or the S.P.C.A.

Services were under the direction of Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home of Dallas.

CARL “BUDDY” DOCKINS

Services for CARL “BUDDY” DOCKINS, 78, of Payne Springs, were held July 30 at Payne Springs Assembly of God Church with Rev. Charles Wilson and Rev. Mark Lewis officiating. Burial followed in the Payne Springs Cemetery under the direction of Hilliard Funeral Home, Van.

Mr. Dockins was born April 30, 1929 in Plano to the late Henry George  Washington Dockins and Margaret Elizabeth  Johnson Dockins. He had lived in Payne Springs about 36 years, moving from Garland. He owned and operated a tire business and was a member of Payne Springs Assembly of God Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Billy Wayne Dockins; one sister and five brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Cecile Dockins of Payne Springs; son, Carl Glenn Dockins Jr. and wife Brenda of Payne Springs; daughter, Barbara Reedy and husband David of Payne Springs; brother, Mack Dockins of Mesquite; sisters, Lucille Praytor of Gun Barrel City and Katherine Fowler of Seven Points; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Wayne Beets, Elmer Adams, Wayne Seay, Luke Beets, Joshua Beets and Rodney McClung.

CLARA MAE McLEOD

CLARA MAE McLEOD was born April 3, 1930 in Electra and reared in Alex, Okla. and went to be with her Lord Aug. 2, 2007.

She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was remembered by her special smile. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lindsay, Okla. and an Eastern Star member for 36 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Carol Alexander of Burleson; a son, Danny Hadlock of Mesquite; a daughter, Debbie Grant of Kemp; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held Aug. 7 at Roselawn Chapel with interment following at Roselawn Memorial Park.

JAMES EARL GOLIGHTLY

JAMES EARL GOLIGHTLY, SR. of Kemp went to be with the love of his life, Sarah Elizabeth, on July 24, 2007.

He was born April 23, 1944 in Terrell to the late Leroy and Naomi Jewel Turner Golightly. James was a spirit filled evangelist and loved his Lord.

He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife, Sarah Elizabeth Golightly; infant son, Baby Boy Golightly; sisters, Wanda Golightly and Letta Dollar.

He is survived by his children, Mary Shooks and husband Everett of  Pennsylvania, Joyce Coder and husband Perry of Kemp, Marcy Turner and husband David of Seagoville, James Golightly, Jr. and wife Kristina of Kemp and Tonya Houston and husband Terry of Waxahachie; brother, Tom Golightly and wife Patsy of Henderson; grandchildren, Samantha and Paxton Golightly of Kemp, Anna, Kristi and Michael Ochoa of  Pennsylvania, Everett Shooks, Jr. of  Pennsylvania, Donald Golightly of Hutchins, Jimmy Hollingsworth of Payne Springs, Amber Coder of Payne Springs, David, Jr., Joshua and Kristian Turner of Seagoville, Heather, Michael, Angel and Heaven Houston of Waxahachie; 10 great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

Services were held July 28 at Anderson Clayton Bros. Funeral Home Chapel in Kemp with Revs. Jack Thompson and Hershell Smith, Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the Morrow Chapel Cemetery in the Ola Community, Kaufman County.

Pallbearers were Mike Jones, David Turner, Donald Kile, Danny Ottmo, Richard Ward, Aaron Holcomb and Billy Richardson. Tom Golightly served as Honorary Pallbearer.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Anne Clayton and Sandy Robinson for their special love and care.

DELBERT CANTRELL

DELBERT CANTRELL, 61, of Athens, passed away July 21, 2007 in Athens. He was born March 31, 1946 in Athens to Roy Junior Cantrell and Ima Rebecca Barton.

Mr. Cantrell was a member of the Assembly of God-Calvary Temple and was a lineman. He was married in 1985 to Cecil Ann. He was an avid outdoorsman, especially camping and fishing. He loved playing dominoes.

He is survived by his wife, Cecil Ann Cantrell of Mineola; mother, Ima Rebecca Cantrell of Athens; brother, Jimmy Cantrell and wife Faye of Ponta; sister, Brenda Scott and nephew Michael Scott of Athens; sons, Dewayne Cantrell and wife Tammy of Kemp, Tommy Houch and wife Heather of Wills Point and Donald Houch and wife Ingrid of Quitman and a daughter, Stephanie Cantrell of Emory.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roy; sister, Donnie and husband Jack Pendergrath; niece, Jessica Almaguer; brother-in-law, Billy; nephew, Sam Scott and grandparents on both sides.

Services were held July 24 at Gordon Foster Brown Chapel with Brother Arnold Walker officiating. Pallbearers were Michael Mason, L.B. Tidwell, Matt Crowell, Mark Crowell and Tommy Houch. Burial followed at Leagueville Cemetery in Leagueville.

BARBARA (ROBERSON) DAVIS

Services for BARBARA (ROBERSON) DAVIS, of Brownsboro, were held Aug. 7 at New Hope Methodist Church in Brownsboro.

She was born May 21, 1941 in Athens and passed away Aug. 4, 2007 at her home in Brownsboro.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Mildred Roberson; a brother, Tim and sons James and Terry. She is survived by her husband, Troy; daughter and son-in-law, Annette and Roy Smith of Athens; grandchildren, Adam Smith, Robert Smith, Rachel Smith, Jeffrey Davis, Whitney Davis and Krystal Davis; one great-grandchild, Kari Davis; sisters, Jackie Brundage of Murchison and Diane Lauderdale of Tyler; sisters-in-law, Venice Roberson of Kerens and Martha Ann Sellers; brother-in-law, Charles and wife Virginia of Tullia; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Skinner of Athens; a host of other relatives and friends.

JACK EVERETT STEGALL

Services for JACK EVERETT STEGALL, 82, of Gun Barrel City, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16 at Eubank Memorial Chapel in Mabank with Rev. Chris Shoecraft officiating. Interment will follow at Moorehead-Melton Cemetery at Eustace under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home.

Mr. Stegall was born Dec. 14, 1924 in Eustace and passed away Aug. 13, 2007 in Gun Barrel City.

A World War II veteran of the Army Air Force, Mr. Stegall was a retired Development Specialist as a civilian employee of the federal government. As a government employee, he helped develop U.S. training policies and programs for executives, and conducted management programs in general personnel administration. He was a training officer in the Minuteman I, II and III missile weapons systems. He also taught at Mabank High School.

Mr. Stegall served as Henderson County Commissioner and Constable for Pct. 2. He was a member of the American Legion Post 310 and served on the board of directors of the East Cedar Creek Fresh Water Supply District from May of 2004 until the present.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lonnie May Stegall. He is survived by his wife, Chris Stegall of Gun Barrel City; son, Bo Stegall and wife Andrea of Grand Prairie; two daughters, Maria Dee Stegall of Eustace and Jacquelyn McCarthy of North Carolina; a sister, Betsy Pickle of Eustace and nine grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association Kaufman County, Southern Division, Dallas, TX 75207-0610.

MILLIE “EVES” BAXLEY

Services for MILLIE “EVES” BAXLEY, 82, of Mabank, were held Aug. 15 at Eubank Memorial Chapel in Mabank with Rev. Brent Tucker and Rev. Jerry Garner officiating. Interment followed at Oaklawn Cemetery in Mabank under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home.

Mrs. Baxley was born July 27, 1925 in Ennis and passed away Aug. 13, 2007 in Tyler. Previously of Richardson, she had resided in Mabank for the past 12 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Hilda Eves; two sisters, Bonnie Foster and Betty Youngblood; a brother, Walter Billy Eves and a grandson, Jimmy Wayne Garner.

She is survived by five sons, Jim Garner of Brazoria, Jerry Garner and wife Linda of Deer Park, Roy Garner and wife Annabell of Dog Patch, Ark., Dennis Garner and wife Susan of Spring and Randall Garner of Dallas; a brother, Duane Eves of Waco; four sisters, Jackie Green of Bismark, Ark., Barbara Grandinetti of Dallas, Joann Pelham of Garland and Pansy Odom of Mabank; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

FORREST EUGENE SMITH

FORREST EUGENE SMITH went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Aug. 8, 2007 after a brief illness. He was born in Avant, Okla. on March 14, 1925 to Dr. Leo L. and Mabel Smith. He was the youngest of three brothers, following Robert and Kenneth.

His family moved to  Oklahoma City when Forrest was four years old. He graduated from high school in  Oklahoma City and immediately afterward he volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a Marine during World War II and spent a year in occupied Japan immediately following the war. He then graduated from Southern Methodist University and became a registered civil engineer.

Forrest married Elizabeth Lee Whitney (Betsy) in Durant, Okla. on April 7, 1951. They lived in Irving for a short time before they moved to Dallas, living there until 1977. Forrest worked for Texaco for several years. He did engineering work in Dallas and later had his own consulting firm.

He and his family moved to Athens in 1977, where he worked as an engineer on contract through the family corporation and was employed by the City of DeSoto and later the City of Palestine for many years. He retired in 2000.

He is survived by his wife, Betsy; sons, Robert Scott Smith of Austin and Forrest Whitney Smith of Coppell; daughters, Samantha Susan Smith of Tyler and Stephanie Shannon Smith Webb; and son-in-law, R. Andrew Webb of Coppell. He also has five grandchildren, Dinah Smith, Chandler Webb, Christen Webb, Casey Webb and Jonathan Forrest Webb. He is also survived by two nieces, Martha Clark of Midwest City, Okla. and Linda Stein of Jones, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Lissa Ann Smith; his parents; his brothers, Robert and Kenneth; and his beloved mother-in-law, Lucille Whitney.

He was a strong believer in Jesus Christ and loved his family dearly.

A memorial service was held Aug. 11 at the First Presbyterian Church of Athens with the Rev. Joe Warren officiating.

If desired, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Athens.

Arrangements were under the direction of Gordon-Foster-Brown Funeral Home of Athens.

MICHAEL MELLOR

MICHAEL MELLOR of Gun Barrel City died July 31, 2007.

He was preceded in death by Sherrie Cochran and his parents.

Survivors include his daughters, Becky Charles and Mandi Wilson; grandchildren, Tucker, Andi, Cubby and Jamie Wilson; brother and sister-in-law, Al and Christina Mellor; sister, Jean Mellor; nieces and nephews, his good friends from the lake and his buddy Tailgate.

A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, Aug. 19. Please call 972-897-1532 for further details.

SHIRLEY SUE GAUGH

SHIRLEY SUE GAUGH, 71, of Gun Barrel City, passed away Aug. 10, 2007 at her home.

Shirley was born April 30, 1936 in Dallas to T.J. and Monette Thompson. She owned several dog grooming facilities in the Garland, Seven Points and Gun Barrel City areas. She was also a trainer for German Shepherd breeds in competitive shows.

Shirley was a longtime resident of Gun Barrel City, having lived here since 1970 and she was an active member of Lakeview Assembly of God Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Gaugh; brother, Tommy Thompson; parents and her granddaughter, Crystal Gaugh.

Shirley is survived by her son, Gary Cooper and his wife Lupe of Gun Barrel City; daughter, Sandy Gaugh of Payne Springs; grandsons: Craig Salazar and wife Michelle of Plano and Casey Cooper and wife Cecilia of Travis AFB, California; granddaughter, Brittany Gaugh of Mabank; great-grandchildren: Caiden, Cael and Kirstyn as well as several other family members and friends.

Graveside services were held Aug. 13 at King Cemetery with Rev. Don Bell officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Anderson-Clayton Bros. Funeral Home in Kemp.
