MIRIAM SIMONS TRAYLOR

Memorial services celebrating the life of Miriam Simons Traylor were held Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Wasco, California following interment at Wasco Memorial Park.

Miriam died September 10th, 1999, eight days before her 103rd birthday. She was born to Courtney Stuart and Sarah (Sallie) Laughter Simons on September 18, 1896 north of Edna on the James Kerr land grant. She was a great-granddaughter of Major James Kerr and wife, Sarah Fulton Kerr, Dr. Francis F. Wells and wife, Martha McNutt Wells, Captain Thomas Simons and wife, Susan Thomas Simons, and Michael Hunt Laughter and wife, Sarah Vardaman Laughter. Major Kerr, Dr. Wells and Captain Simons were all living in what later became the Republic of  Texas and were leaders in its fight for independence. Major Kerr was surveyor for Green DeWitt’s Colony and was president of the Millican’s Gin Meeting which was one of the initial meetings prior to the  Texas Revolution. Dr. Wells was co-founder of Texana and was a member of Austin’s old three hundred. Her grandparents, George and Flora Wells Simons and William Pearson Laughter were also active in the early days of Edna and  Jackson County. Her grandmother, Sarah Kerr Laughter, died shortly after Miriam’s mother, Sarah (Sallie) Laughter Simons, was born.

Miriam finished her education in Edna schools and attended Southwestern University at Georgetown and  Texas A&M (during the summer sessions) and received a teaching certificate and taught school for several years. During one of these years she rode horseback to her assignment in Garwood, staying during the week and returning home on the weekends.

She was married to Champ Traylor, another Edna native, in 1921. They went to California in a Model T Ford in 1923 and settled in Long Beach where Champ worked in the oil fields and Miriam worked in a defense plant in World War II. They returned to Edna in the forties during her father’s illness and death. In 1946 they relocated to Wasco where Champ was involved in cotton farming.

Active in local Wasco organizations, she served as president of the Wasco Women’s Club, PEO and the Women’s Society of Christian Service. She originated the Golden Agers in Wasco and created the Methodist Smorgasbord which became an annual tradition at the Wasco church for many years. Also in Wasco, the Traylor Scholarship is awarded annually to help further the education of deserving students.

A charter member of the Texana Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of  Texas, she was proud of her heritage.

She enjoyed gardening and piano. The Texana Museum received her piano several years ago. This piano was a gift from Major Kerr to Miriam’s grandmother, Sarah Kerr Laughter. All who knew her marveled at her remarkable memory and her ability to be aware of current events even at her age.

Miriam was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Champ in 1976 and her five brothers, Harry, who died in infancy; Thomas Kerr, Louis Lowe, Courtney Stuart, Jr. and Williamson Wells.

Survivors include one niece, Ruth Ray of Canyon Lake, TX, nephews, James Simons of Edna, Harry Simons and George Simons of Houston and William Kerr Simons of St. Petersburg, Florida. Other survivors include: Betty Jean Vaughan of Victoria, Louise Malsch of Edna, Margaret Cunningham of San Antonio, Walter Ray Cook of Port Lavaca, Patty  Washington of Hemphill, Patricia Jorrie of San Antonio, Mary Emma Korus of Pleasanton and William Traylor of Morristown, Tennessee. She is also survived by many great-and great-great nieces and nephews. Many other relatives and friends will remember her.

Peters Funeral Home, Wasco, California, was in charge of arrangements. Donations may be made in memory of Miriam to the First United Methodist Church, 1441 Seventh St., Wasco, California 93263 or to The Organ Fund, First United Methodist Church, Drawer 790, Edna, TX 77957.
