RAYMOND LEFRIDGE, RICE FARMER

Funeral services for Raymond LeFridge, 81, of Edna were held Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Scruggs United Methodist Church with the Revs. Danny Richard and Martin Williams officiating. Interment followed at Sayles Cemetery under the direction of Tracy’s M.J. Santellana Funeral Directors, Edna.

Mr. LeFridge died Sept. 24. He was born Sept. 5, 1918, to the late Lewis and Mercy Goode LeFridge. He was a rice farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Stovall LeFridge of Edna; daughters, Esther Polk, Ruth Wilson and Brenda  Washington, all of Edna, Leola Stovall of Fannin and Theresa Stovall of Austin; son, Bobby Stovall of Edna; sisters, Elizabeth Jones, Jewel Brown and Alberta Yancy; brother, Roosevelt LeFridge; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchild.

GURLEY PALMER CHASE, RETIRED BODY SHOP OWNER

Funeral services for Gurley Palmer Chase, 77, of Edna will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at Slavik Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jim Gilbert officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens of Edna.

Mr. Chase died Sept. 26. Born Aug. 16, 1922, in Paris,  Texas to the late Samuel Ethan and Gracie  Johnson Chase, he was the retired owner of Edna Body Shop and was a member of First Baptist Church of Edna. He was a descendant of Samuel P. Chase, an original member of Congress that signed the Declaration of Independence. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the Corp of Engineers and was awarded the Purple Heart from wounds received while serving in Europe. Upon completion of his service obligation, he returned to Edna and married the former Ruth Schaefer of Mission Valley on Nov. 7, 1947. On October of 1949 Gurley and his partner Herbert Atzenhoffer opened the Edna Body Shop. Atzenhoffer retired after 27 years. Gurley retired in 1991. In his spare time Gurley enjoyed fishing and square dancing. He and wife Ruth enjoyed dancing and sharing this recreation world-wide.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Schaefer Chase of Edna; daughter, Gail Hogan and husband Tommie of Albuquerque, N.M.; son, J.R. Chase and wife Linda of Edna; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Chase, Elmer Chase and W.A. Chase.

Pallbearers will be Kenneth Tones, Mark Powers, Wayne Spiller, Dennis Quarles, Danny Pitts and Andrew Magninat. Honorary pallbearers will be Cody Glover, Bobby Gendke, Monty O’Bryant, Grover Cagle, Bob Hessong and all square dancers and callers.

Memorials may be made to Gracie Chase Memorial Scholarship Fund, % of First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 417, Edna,  Texas 77957, or donor’s choice.

ARTHUR F. "HOPPY" WHEELER

Funeral services for Arthur F. “Hoppy” Wheeler, 72, of Lolita were held Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Lolita United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alan Delafield officiating. Interment followed at Red Bluff Cemetery under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home of Port Lavaca.

Mr. Wheeler died Feb. 28. Born Oct. 5, 1927, in Victoria to the late Arthur F. Wheeler Sr. and Kate Sue Stallings, he retired from plant operations with CP&L after 41 years of service and was a member of Lolita United Methodist Church. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Korea and was a life member and past Post Commander of V.F.W. #8556 of Lolita. He was also a caretaker for the Red Bluff Cemetery and the Lolita Cemetery for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Joe Caffall Wheeler of Lolita whom he married Oct. 29, 1970; daughters, Debbie Wheeler, San Antonio, Lee Ann Bowen, Austin, and Anita Gross, Canyon Lake; son, Russell Carpenter, Las Vegas, Nev.; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by parents; sister; and son .

Pallbearers were Heath Carpenter, Colby Bowen, Bobby Gross, Clayton Carpenter, Russell Carpenter and Randy Waters. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Bowen, Lenard Daily, CP&L employees and retirees and the CP&L Camping Group.

Memorials may be made to the Lolita United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 103, Lolita, TX 77971.

DOROTHY MARIE HOWARD

Funeral services for Dorothy Marie Howard, 71, of Edna were held Friday, March 3, 2000, at St. Agnes Catholic Church of Edna with the Rev. Michael O’Shaughnessy officiating. Interment followed at Red Bluff Cemetery under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home.

Mrs. Howard died March 1. Born March 10, 1928, in Yoakum to the late John Barnec and Matilda Jurek, she was a homemaker and member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. She and Albert “Jack” Howard of Edna were married June 19, 1962, in Edna. She was a member of V.F.W. and attended Nazareth Academy.

Survivors include husband; daughters, Theresa Zetka, El Campo, and Rose Harvey and Linda Fowler, both of Edna; son, Richard Zack, Edna; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by parents; son, Frank Zack Jr.; two sisters; and a brother.

Pallbearers were Dennis Harvey, Tim Harvey, Joe Zetka Jr., Ricky Zack, Johnathan Fowler and Sonny Hadley. Honorary pallbearers were John Schoelman, Chris Williams, Kevin Grimes, Chris Burks, Artey Burks, Eric Morgan, Joe Zetka Sr., and all grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to donor’s choice or St. Agnes Catholic Church.

AUGUST GEORGE NATSIS JR.

Funeral services for August George Natsis Jr., 81, of Victoria and Edna were held Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Slavik Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Michael O’Shaughnessy officiating. Interment followed at Memory Gardens of Edna under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home.

Mr. Natsis died Feb. 28. Born July 26, 1918, in Bay City, Michigan, to the late August “Gus” George Natsis Sr., and Estella Hennard Natsis, he was a retired lumberman and member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. He and the late Vivian LeVasseur were married Sept. 7, 1941. He retired as vice president of Calcasieu Lumber Co. in Austin in 1974 and was active in the Lumbermen’s Association of  Texas. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe.

Survivors include a son, August George Natsis III, Edna; brother, William F. Natsis, Bay City, Michigan; a grandson and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by parents; and a sister.

Pallbearers were Chip Natsis, Preston Atkinson, Darrell Atkinson, Lloyd Boston, Steve Blanchard and Martin Hill. Honorary pallbearers were residents and staff of Assisted Living of Victoria.

Memorials may be made to donor’s choice.

IDA H. BOLTON

Graveside services for Ida H. Bolton, 78, of Ganado were held Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Ganado Cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Adamson officiating. Interment was under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bolton died March 3. Born June 21, 1921, in Shiner to the late Herbert Hoerig, she was a homemaker and member of St. James Lutheran Church of Ganado. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the VFW in Ganado.

Survivors include sons, Alton Bolton and David Bolton, both of Van Vleck; sister, Irma Barta, New Braunfels; brother, Herbert Hoerig, Shiner; and five grandchildren.

Preceded in death by four sisters; and husband, Alton Bolton Sr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the St. James Lutheran Memorial Fund.

EARON WAYNE KEEN

Funeral services for Earon Wayne Keen, 67, of Ganado were held Friday, April 7, 2000, at Ganado Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Adam Jaquez officiating. Interment followed at Ganado Cemetery under the direction of Ganado Funeral Home.

Mr. Keen died April 4. Born Jan. 30, 1933, in Chicota, to the late Nickolas Henry and Annie Adeline Northcutt Keen, he was a retired electrician and had been employed by Brown & Root.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Keen, Lampasas; daughters, Linda Harnar, Rockdale, Patricia Roberts and Carolyn Lozano, both of Ganado, Audrey Husak, Port Lavaca, and Leah Rene Keen, Lampasas; sons, Earon Roger Keen, Cash, Michael Keen, Brazoria, and Cory Wayne Keen, Lampasas; brother, John Keen, Lampasas; and 16 grandchildren.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

ROBERT L. BASTIAN

Funeral services for Robert L. Bastian, 77, of Inez were held Saturday, April 8, 2000, at the Colonial North Chapel on Cuero Hwy. 87 North in Victoria with the Rev. Mickey Ewing officiating. Interment followed at Memory Gardens under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home.

Mr. Bastian died April 5. Born Sept. 1, 1922, in Calhoun County to the late Charles and Betty Bastian, he was a retired insulator for Brown and Root and was a member of Northside Baptist Church of Victoria. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

Survivors include sons, Jerry Bastian, Port Lavaca, Terry Bastian, Inez, and David W. Bastian, Victoria; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Bastian.

Pallbearers were Jerry Bastian, Brian Bastian, Johnny Bastian, Travis Reeve, Chris Haaf and Richard Jordan.

Memorials may be made to Northside Baptist Day School.

JACOB WADE PETRICH

Funeral services for Jacob Wade Petrich, 21, of Houston, formerly of Edna, were held Sunday, April 9, 2000, at Baptist Temple in Edna with the Rev. Danny Wilson officiating. Interment followed at Memory Gardens of Edna under the auspices of Sugar Land Masonic Lodge #1141 of which he was a member.

Mr. Petrich died April 5. He was born Oct. 26, 1978, in Wharton to Edward Petrich of Sealy and Deborah Furman of Edna.

Survivors include parents; wife, Mandy Faltesek Petrich, Houston; stepfather, Tom Furman, Edna; brother, John Petrich of Richmond; and grandparent, Pearl Petrich of Port Lavaca.

He was preceded in death by grandparents Mylia and James U. Myers.

Pallbearers were K.B. DeBord, Steve Hubbard, Thad Bergstrom, Bobby Smith, Steven Friedrich and Jeremiah Workman. Honorary pallbearers were Travis Phillips and Larry Chamberlain.

WILHELMINA BEKEN

Funeral services for Wilhelmina Beken, 90, of Weimar were held Sunday, April 9, 2000, at Weimar United Church of Christ. Interment followed at the Weimar Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Hubbard Funeral Home of Weimar.

Mrs. Beken died April 7. Born Oct. 18, 1909, to the late Louis Klare and Minnie Buske in Mixon Creek in Lavaca County, near Hallettsville. She and the late Edgar Beken were married Dec. 27, 1934, in LaGrange at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. A homemaker, she was a charter member of the Weimar Literary Guild, Nimble Fingers Sewing Club and was also a member of several Canasta and Domino clubs. A member of Weimar United Church of Christ, she was a member and past president of the Naomi-Ruth Circle, member and past president of the Women’s Guild, member and past president of Weimar PTA and member of the Weimar Garden Club.

Survivors include daughters, Will Ann Nava, Edna, and Brooksie Fuchs, Weimar; sister, Christine Dahse, Weimar; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Maurice Beken; five brothers; and three sisters.
