Liska

Angeline A. (Polasek) Liska, 93, died Thursday, April 24, 2003, in Poteet. She was born Aug. 11, 1901, to John and Annie (Haas) Polasek in Georgetown. She married Charlie Steve Liska on July 11, 1927, in Bastrop. Mrs. Liska was a homemaker and a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She had lived most of her life in Three Rivers.

Mrs. Liska was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charlie Liska; a sister, Josie Chanantez; and a granddaughter, Mary Ann Hackett.
Survivors include three daughters, Elizabeth McLane of  Texas City, Evelyn Papasan of Corpus Christi and Charlene (Bobby) Adams of Poteet; two sisters, Elizabeth Dozier of Euless and Paddy Shaw of Ennis; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Rosary was recited on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Galloway & Sons Chapel in Three Rivers. The funeral Mass will be celebrated today
(Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Piotr Gajda officiating. Burial will follow at the Three Rivers Cemetery.

Dirks

Billie June (Martin) Dirks of George West, 70, died Saturday, April 19, 2003. She was born in George West on Oct. 26, 1932, to June T. and Luciel (Blackmon) Martin. She married Robert L. Dirks in Fort Smith, Ark., on Oct. 11, 1952.

Mrs. Dirks was a homemaker and a member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Dirks of George West; a daughter, Marcia Dirks of Wimberley; a son, Paul Martin (Kathryn) Dirks of Corpus Christi; four grandchildren, Kristin Marie Acock, Lynlie Marie Wallace, Abigail Wallace and Jack Carpenter Wallace III; a sister, Marjorie Altenhoff of New Braunfels; a brother, Travis Martin of George West; and aunts, Bula Barry and Ann Fair, both of George West.
Visitation was held Monday at the Galloway & Sons Chapel in Beeville. The funeral was held at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Adrian Amaya officiating. Burial followed at the Glenwood Cemetery in Beeville.

Pallbearers were Bobby Jacob, Donnie Watkins, Dick McGee, Jack Carpenter Wallace III, J.W. Turner and David Altenhoff.
Honorary pallbearers were Bill Hardwick, Darwin Altenhoff, Richard Dirks, Lee Dirks and Wayne Dirks.

Dupont

Leland Dupont, 77, died Monday, April 21, 2003. He was born Jan. 4, 1926, in Port Arthur.

Mr. Dupont retired as a colonel in the United States Army Reserves (Civil Affairs). He was a scheduler for Public Works at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. He was a life member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and a board member for 10 years. He was also a life member of ROA, the VFW Post 8920 in Orange Grove and a faithful servant of Faith Church United Church of Christ in Orange Grove.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Dupont; two sons, Leland L. (Mary) Dupont II of Muldoon and Chris A. (Cindy) Dupont of Baltimore, Md.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Dupont of Corpus Christi and Charles Dupont of Nocona; and two sisters, Peggy Wilbur of Baton Rouge, La., and Sue Dupont of Corpus Christi.

Visitation will be held at Seaside Funeral Home in Corpus Christi today (Wednesday) from 1 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Wade Fuhrken officiating. Interment will follow at Seaside Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Hugh Vickers, Ruben Salinas, Manuel Garcia, Felix Pospech, Allen Marciniak and Joe Veit.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Faith Church UCC, P.O. Box 750, Orange Grove, TX 78372, or your favorite charity.

Arrangements under the direction of Seaside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, Corpus Christi.

Forehand

Dora Forehand died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at her residence in Victoria, following a long illness. Mrs. Forehand retired from the Alice Independent School District where she was employed for 25 years.

Survivors include her husband, Orem Forehand of Victoria; three sons, Chuck Forehand of Victoria, James Forehand of Corpus Christi and Paul Forehand of Tomball; two daughters, Sue Bryant of Liberty Hill and Diane Fauth of Victoria; one brother, Nick Mutz of Poth; one sister, Mary Gembler of San Antonio; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Wednesday, April 16, at the Roberson Funeral Home Chapel in Alice.

The funeral was held Thursday, April 17, at 2 p.m. at the West Main Baptist Church in Alice with the Rev. David Parks officiating. Burial followed in the Three Rivers Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jim Forehand, Kyle Forehand, T.J. Forehand, Alan Bryant, Tim Forehand, Keith Forehand and Josh Fauth.

Garza

Candida “Candy” (Peña) Garza, 80, of Portland died Thursday, April 10, 2003. She was born Oct. 3, 1922, in Oakville.

Mrs. Garza was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Corpus Christi.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Rosa Tanguma of Refugio.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandy Galvan of San Antonio; three sons, Juan P. Garza and George P. Garza, both of Portland, and Joseph H. “Tito” Garza of San Antonio; four sisters, Connie Guajardo, Enedina Tanguma and Elva Carroll, all of Three Rivers, and Mary Hernandez of Houston; four brothers, Cruz Peña of Corpus Christi, Gilbert Peña of Victoria, Alejandro Peña of Three Rivers and Juventino Peña of Floresville; six grandchildren, Andrea N. Garza, Veronica L. Garza, Christopher D. Galvan, Stephen A. Galvan, Andrew Garza and Anthony Garza; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rosary was recited at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Corpus Christi. The funeral Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday at the same location.

Interment was on Saturday at San Patricio Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements were under the direction of Limbaugh Funeral Home, Portland.

Hobson

Davy Hobson, 68, of Grapeland, died Monday, March 25, 2003, in Tyler. He was born Sept. 20, 1934, in Palestine to W.M. and Carmen (Chasten) Hobson.

Mr. Hobson was a graduate of Slocum High School and received his bachelor of science degree from Sam Houston State University. He taught school for 34 years, five of which were spent in George West coaching. He had been retired for six years. In an attempt to teacher younger children the game of basketball, he brought Little Dribblers to George West. He was also involved in summer track.
Mr. Hobson was ordained as a minister at the age of 17 and held his first revival when he was 14 at the First Baptist Church of Wells. He pastored many churches throughout the years including the Mineral Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Martha “Mart” (Ford) Hobson of Grapeland; two sons, Davy Dawayne (Sharon) Hobson of Tyler; and Davy Rase (Leah) Hobson of Grapeland; five grandchildren, Jessica Hobson, Dakota Hobson, Ladye Marie Hobson, Jayton Hobson and Jeron Hobson; three brothers, Burl (Rita) Hobson of Crockett, Don (Katy) Hobson and Bill (Robbie) Hobson, all of Grapeland; five sisters, Laverne Boon (Bill) Schultz of Houston, Gayle (Bo) Ford of Tyler, Peggy (Coy Lynn) Ford and Lisa (Gary) Ford, all of Pollok and Dian (Dub) Steritt of Corpus Christi; and nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hobson was preceded in death by a brother, Chass Hobson.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Corbin, Nathan Dyess, Raymond Fletcher, Don Hutton, Steve Lane and Reid Smith.

Services were held at the Muse Baptist Church on Wednesday, March 26, with the Revs. Tommy Caskey and Gary Luker officiating. Burial followed in the Providence Cemetery.

Funeral services were under the direction of Bailey & Foster Funeral Home, Palestine.

Retzloff

Willie Retzloff, 84, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, in a local nursing home. He was born to Rosa (Huth) and Herman Retzloff Sr. in Karnes County on Dec. 19, 1918. He was a longtime farmer and rancher in the Ray Point Community.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Eleanora Retzloff, in 1998.

Survivors include three sons, Jerry (Geraldine) Retzloff and Jonny (Tracey) Retzloff of Three Rivers and Jim (Jo Anne) Retzloff of San Antonio; a daughter, Jeanette (Curtis) Zamzow of Corpus Christi; nine grandchildren, Lisa (Eddie) Lopez, Anita Shockome, Kristen Zamzow and Kevin Zamzow, all of Corpus Christi, Jason (Shawna) Retzloff of Beeville, Shelly (John) Bynum and Tim Retzloff, all of San Antonio, and Keely Retzloff and Will Retzloff, both of Three Rivers; a sister, Mary Ella Henke of Fashing; two brothers, Hugo Retzloff of Esseville and Herman Retzloff Jr. of Karnes City; and three great-grandchildren, Anthony Garza and Whitney Shockome, both of Corpus Christi, and McKenzie Retzloff of Beeville.

A prayer service was held on Thursday in the Roberson Chapel. The funeral was held Friday at 10 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Three Rivers.

Burial followed in the Ray Point Cemetery.

Muñoz

Julia Muñoz, 78, of George West, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in a Beeville Hospital following a short illness. She was a member of the George West Worship Center.

Survivors include three sons, Jose (Irma) Muñoz and Robert (Stela) Muñoz, all of George West and Julio (Irma) Muñoz of Schertz; a daughter, Connie (Santiago) Sanchez of Petersburg; two brothers, Jose Nieto of Laredo and Jesus Nieto of Nixon; two sisters, Emma Juarez and Dora Nesa, both of George West; and 22 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. in the George West Worship Center. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the same location.

The funeral will be Friday, April 18 at the George West Worship Center.
Interment will follow in the George West Cemetery.

Amaro
Sylvia Amaro, 70, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, in a Victoria hospital following a long illness.

She was born in George West and worked as a waitress. She was a member of St. George Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Nicolas Garcia of George West; one son, Manuel Martinez of George West; two daughters, Addie Carrillo and Maria Martinez, both of Kerrville; one brother, Gilbert Amaro of Lolita; five half-sisters, Lorenza Briseño of Vanderbilt, Maria Ortiz of Three Rivers, Mary Garza of Houston, Janie Cano of Beeville and Andrea Amaro of Victoria; and five grandchildren.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Roberson Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at St. George Catholic Church in George West. Interment was in the George West Cemetery.

Peña
Elida “Leli” G. Peña, 62, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, in Fort Worth. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Chapel. The funeral was held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Keller.Burial followed in Greenwood Memorial Park.

Mrs. Peña was born on Feb. 6, 1941, in George West to Jose B. and Carolina Gonzales. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Cathedral for 35 years and a member of the Altar Society. She owned and operated her own business for more than 10 years.

She was preceded in death by Stella Rene Peña and a brother.
Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Ray Peña; a daughter, Sandra (Frank) Peña-Hernandez of Fort Worth; four sons, Ruben Peña and Richard Peña, both of Fort Worth, Oscar (Angela) Peña of San Antonio and Robert Peña of Corpus Christi; two granddaughters, Stormi Layne Hernandez and Sidney Renee Hernandez of Fort Worth; a grandson, Nicholas Peña and Jennifer; three sisters, Gloria Gonzales, Elda Gonzales and Elvira Ybañez; and four brothers, Benny Gonzales, Soilo Gonzales, Abline Gonzales and Raul Gonzales.
Arrangements were under the direction of Greenwood Funeral Home, Fort Worth.

Soliz
Teresa Soliz, 85, died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at her home in San Antonio after a short illness.
She was a resident of George West for the past 46 years. Mrs. Soliz was born at the El Toro Ranch in Willacy County on April 8, 1917, to Nabor and Francisca (Salazar) Castillo.

Mrs. Soliz was a member of St. George Catholic Church where she participated in the Ladies Altar Society. She was also a member of the Life-Study Fellowship, Sacred Heart Association and the Lourdes Prayer League.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Fernando Soliz, a son, Bobby Soliz and a sister, Sofia Barrientez.

Survivors include three daughters, Beatrice (Alejandro) Vargas of San Antonio, Otilia C. (Isidro) Ibarra of Beeville and Rose Castañeda of George West; three sons, Aroldo (Natalia) Castañeda, Juan (Amalia) Soliz and Arnoldo Castañeda, all of George West; four sisters, Nina Cantu of Weslaco, Amalia Perez of Raymondville, Elida Gutierrez of McAllen and Dora Mendoza of San Antonio; 17 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends.

Rosary was held Monday at St. George Catholic Church in George West. A Mass of Resurrection was celebrated Tuesday at the same location. Interment followed at St. George Cemetery.

Strause
Thelma P. Strause, 84, of George West, died Sunday, March 9, 2003.
Mrs. Strause was born June 19, 1918 in Live Oak County to William F. and Dora (Grover) Pugh. She married Bob Strause on April 28, 1938 in George West. She was a homemaker and a member of St. George Catholic Church.

Mrs. Strause was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Strause, who died two years ago to the day of her passing, on March 9, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include two sons, Buddy Strause of El Paso and Ronnie Strause of George West; two daughters, Patsie Harris of Portland and Dora Jo Jungman of George West; a brother, Jimmy Pugh of George West; two sisters, Lillian Bartlett and Margaret James, both of George West; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rosary was recited Tuesday at Galloway & Sons Chapel in George West. Funeral Mass will be celebrated today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at St. George Catholic Church in George West with Father Joseph Olikkara officiating. Burial will follow at the George West Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Adam Strause, Ryan Harris, Scott Martin, John Slanina, Matt Jungman, David Strause, Kent Harris and Bob Strause.
