Root
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 1, 2003, for John Dallas Root, 83, of Liberty, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Liberty.
J.D. Root, who survived the Great Depression, fought for his country in World War II and became a pillar of the local business community as a Certified Public Accountant.
John Dallas Root, everybody called him "J.D.", was born July 17, 1920, in Sulphur,  Louisiana, to John and Myrtle Root. John Root never learned to read or write, but he taught his sons and daughters the virtues of hard work and Christian devotion.
Lured to southeast  Texas by family and a thriving job market, the Roots moved to  Jefferson County when J.D. was 18 months old, and he has been a resident of the Lone Star State ever since.
In 1933, at the height of the Great Depression, J.D. and family moved to Liberty County, where relatives and the promise of work in the rice fields offered a glimmer of hope in otherwise hard times. For a dollar a day, young J.D. pulled weeds by hand from dawn to dusk, never seeing feet that were emerged in muddy water.
He once scraped up enough money to buy a pair of white Sunday dress shoes advertised in what seemed to be a reliable catalogue. Alas, it was a bitter disappointment, the first puddle young J.D. walked through, the cardboard soles fell apart.
"I went home and threw myself on the bed and cried and cried," he recalled.
Better times awaited on the football field of Liberty High School, where J.D. was known as a fierce, quick runner. He lettered three times and became captain of his team, recalled his lifelong buddy, Ben Pickett, who used to tease J.D. about the exuberant cheers once heard from the yell squad: "He's a wonder, he's a dream, he's the captain of our team --- yea, J.D.!"
Root and Pickett graduated in 1938 and both went off to Schreiner Institute in Kerrville. Little did they know then that events a continent away would change their course, and their lives, forever.
World War II, which took J.D. from humble, rural surroundings to the likes of Boca Raton, Florida, and London, England, would become the defining experience of Root's life. He was reluctant to talk about his war experience -- not from combat stress but because, he once said, he was embarrassed to have enjoyed it so thoroughly.
Lt. Root recalled being entertained by the Glenn Miller Band in Florida and got his first taste of butler-served meals at the officer's dining Club in London. Not bad for a child of the Depression!
Root longed to be a pilot but discovered that poor vision wouldn't permit it. Instead, he became an electronics officer in the Army Air Corps and tracked enemy aircraft using then-nascent radar technology.
Root was honorably discharged on November 7, 1945, and he threw himself into his studies at the University of Houston. He became a certified public accountant in 1952.
For a while, Root seemed destined for permanent bachelorhood. He often recalled fondly those early years when he and roommate Art Barkis would fly their own plane to Monterrey, Mexico, for a round of golf or head to fun-filled Vegas.
A date with Joe Ann Hartel at Liberty's bicentennial celebration in 1956 changed everything. They dated four years -- four long ones from J.D.'s perspective -- but their romance lasted a lifetime. They married on October 4, 1960 and celebrated 43 years of marriage before J.D. left this world.
Root loved the game of golf, the  Texas Longhorn football team and any opportunity to travel. So enchanted were he and Joe Ann with their two-week honeymoon in San Francisco that they decided to make it a three-week affair.
For some 40 years, he presided over the accounting firm he started in 1953. Finally, retiring in 1991, Root was a devoted father, husband and community leader, and his family admired his grace and dignity as he found a valiant battle against cancer, family members said.
Mr. Root died Wednesday, October 29, 2003 in his beloved Liberty.
Root is survived by wife, Joe Ann Hartel Root of Liberty; and four children, Judi Root Cross of Liberty, Suzy Root Schilling of Atlanta, Joey root of  Oklahoma City and Jay Root of Austin; one brother, Herman Root of Katy; two sisters, Evelyn Bernard and Betty Ann Dalby, both of Nederland; 10 grandchildren, Josh, Sarah and Hannah Cross of Liberty, Joe Schenkel and Courtney and Kelsey Schilling of Atlanta, Maxwell and Mason Root of  Oklahoma City and Louise and Benjamin Root of Austin.
