CHARLES A. STEVENSON

Private services for Charles Albert "Button" Stevenson, 92, of Canyon have been held.

Arrangements were by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Stevenson died Tuesday, October 7, 2003.

He was born on his parent's farm in Floyd County on May 7, 1911.

He played polo at the professional level and had been a mortician prior to entering the Navy at the beginning of World War II.

He served as a corpsman in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he farmed and ranched in Floyd and Briscoe counties and in Chaves County, New Mexico.

While living in Roswell, New Mexico, he was an active member of Alcholics Anonymous and accepted Jesu as his Lord and Master.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Smith Stevenson in 1970 and a sister, Chi Clark in 1988.

Survivors include his son, Max Stevenson; three grandsons, Jim Stevenson, Tommy Stevenson and Sam Stevenson; three great-grandsons, Cedar Stevenson, Holt Stevenson and Clayton Stevenson.

MILDRED BURKE CATES

Services for Mildred Burke Cates, 84, of Floydada were held November 11, 2003 at 2:30 p.m., First United Methodist Church in Floydada. Dr. David  Jones officiated.

Mildred departed this life on November 8, 2003 at her home outside of Floydada.

She was born March 12, 1919 in Atoka,  Oklahoma and married Johnnie Clifford Cates November 18, 1939. She was a homemaker and artist, active in several women's clubs and charitable organizations, and was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Floydada.

She is survived by her husband, Johnnie Cates, and four daughters, Carolyn Pufal of El Paso, Jan Lofton of Memphis, Tennessee, Donna Clayton of Amarillo, and Denise Calahan of Dell city; seven grandchildren; one sister, Jonelle Burke Fawver; and one brother, Lawrence Burke.

She was preceded in death by her parents, D.W. and Martha Lee Burke, brothers, DeWit and James Burke and sister, Valerie Burke Tye.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church of Floydada or the Senior Citizens Center of Floydada.

PAULINE MYRICK

Services for Pauline "Polly" Myrick, 82, of Floydada, were held Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at the First Baptist Church of Floydada. Reverend Anthony Sisemore officiated. Burial was in Floyd County Memorial Park under the direction of Moore-Rose- White Funeral Home of Floydada.

Mrs. Myrick passed away on Monday, November 10, 2003 at the Floydada Rehab and Care Center.

She was born on September 28, 1921 in Rayland to Johnny and Dolly Green Cantrell. She graduated from Floydada High School and married Clovis Myrick on April 10, 1948 in Lubbock. She was a homemaker, and loved gardening and sewing. She was a lifelong resident of Floyd County and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents Johnny and Dollie Cantrell; three brothers, J.D. Cantrell, Bobby Cantrell, and Gary Cantrell; and two sisters, Inez Edwards and Ruthie Duke Beedy.

Survivors include her husband, Clovis Myrick of Floydada; two sons, Donnie Myrick and wife Greta of Spearville, Kansas and Dwayne Myrick and wife Nancy of Grand Prairie; one daughter, Linda  Jackson and husband Cecil of Floydada; three sisters, Aline Dobbins and Estell Warren both of Floydada and Genell Blanton of Idalou; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials to Alzheimer's Disease Education Program, 3601 4th Street, Room 3A116, Lubbock,  Texas 79430.

JOHN SPEER

Services for John Speer, 76, of Floydada were held Tuesday, November 11, 2003 at First Baptist Church of Flomot. Reverend Nathan Mulder officiated. Burial was in Flomot Cemetery under the direction of Moore-Rose- White Funeral Home of Floydada.

Mr. Speer passed away Saturday, November 8, 2003 at his residence in Floydada.

He was born on February 4, 1927 to Joe and Effie Speer. He graduated from high school in Flomot in 1944 and from  Texas Tech with a Bachelor in Business in 1952. He married Joyce Bilberry on October 16, 1969 in Flomot. He was born and raised in Flomot and moved to Floydada in 1971. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II and Korea. He was a retired rural mail carrier and farmer. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, neighbors and friends. He was a member of the VFW and First Baptist Church in Flomot. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Melva Jo Speer and Alice Montoya.

Survivors include: his wife, Joyce Speer of Floydada; one son, Bill Turbyfill of Corpus Christi; one daughter, Kay Nicoley and husband Ray of Tucumcari, New Mexico; two brothers, Walt Speer and wife Mary, and Raymond Speer and wife Dorothy; one sister Jimmie Hunter and husband Wayne; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice Hands of West  Texas, P.O. Box 1118, Lockney,  Texas 79241.

CHARLES B. HARTSELL

Funeral services for Charles Blanton Hartsell, 89, of Floydada were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 20, 2003 at the First Baptist Church.

Burial was held in the Lakeview Cemetery under the direction of Moore-Rose- White Funeral Home of Floydada.

Mr. Hartsell passed away Monday, November 17, 2003 at Crosbyton Hospital.

He was born on March 24, 1914 in Wise County to James Arthur Hartsell and Edna Caroline Giles Hartsell. He married Ruby Harrison on November 10, 1939 at the Mount Blanco Parsonage. He enjoyed farming and was a lifelong resident of Floyd County and was a Baptist.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glen Hartsell and Roger Hartsell and three sisters, Lotella Burrows, Estelene Holmes and Ervalea Colville.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Hartsell, of Floydada; one son, Larry Hartsell and wife, Sharon of Crosbyton; one daughter, Carolyn Lamberth and husband, H.D. of Carlsbad, New Mexico; one brother, Truitt James Hartsell of Plainview; one sister, Modena Phillips, of Mesa, Arizona; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials to a favorite charity.

C.F. FLIPPIN

Funeral services for C.E. "Flip" Flippin, 78, of the Providence Community, were held Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Claytonville First Baptist Church. Kelly Warren officiated.

Burial was held in the Hart Cemetery under the direction of Wood-Dunning Funeral Home.

Mr. Flippin died on December 15, 2003 at 12:56 a.m. at the Plainview Covenant Hospital.

He was born August 22, 1925 in Floydada and moved to Hart at a young age.

He went into the U.S. Army in 1944 during World War II. He married Wanda Gene Nance on January 10, 1948 in Plainview. He was a farmer in the Providence Community and retired in 1990. He was a member of the American Legion and was also a deacon at Claytonville First Baptist Church.

Mr. Flippin was preceded in death by two brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Flippin; one daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Larry Ferguson of Floydada; one son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Susan Flippin of Plainview; one brother, Kyle Flippin of Lubbock; one sister, Rosalie Birdsong of Plainview; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

EDGAR HAMMOND

Funeral services for Edgar M. Hammond, 83, of Floydada were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 14, 2003 at Moore-Rose- White Memorial Chapel. Reverend Anthony D. Sisemore, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Floydada, officiated.

Burial was held Monday, December 15, 2003 in the New Hope Cemetery in Milam,  Texas.

Mr. Hammond died Friday, December 12, 2003 at Floydada Rehab and Care Center.

He was born on January 24, 1920 in Iola,  Texas to Morrison and Margaret Hammond. He graduated from Iola High School in 1939. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in New Guinea, South Phillipines and was awarded two Bronze Stars.

He married Doris Marie Shue on December 7, 1946 in Kountze,  Texas. He worked in the shipyards and sheet metal business before moving to Floydada in 1952 and establishing Hammond Sheet Metal Company as owner and operator. He retired in 1986 after installing heating and air conditioning for 34 years in homes and businesses in Floyd County and surrounding counties.

Hammond was a member of the First Baptist Church and Oddfellows and served as a member of the City Council.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Cleo Hammond and George Hammond; son-in-law, Richard Marler and two great-grandsons, Jacob Marler and Austin Marler.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Doris Hammond of Floydada; two daughters, Linda Johnsona and husband, Wesley of Spring,  Texas and Rebecca Hammond of Viterbo, Italy; two grandchildren, Trisha Gonzales and husband, Danny of Port Neches and Charles Marler and wife, Emily of Round Rock; five great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; five nieces and one nephew and numerous extended family.

The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer's Association, 4400 North Big Spring C32, Midland,  Texas 79705.

UNA FAYE WHITFILL

Graveside services for Una Faye Whitfill, 77, of Lockney, were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 12, 2003 at the Silverton Cemetery. Cody Neil Whitfill, minister of Cody Whitfill Summit Ministries, officiated.

Burial was under the direction of Moore-Rose- White Funeral Home of Lockney.

Mrs. Whitfill died Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at the Mangold Memorial Hospital in Lockney.

She was born on September 16, 1926 in Lockney to the late Luther and Mamie Wofford. After graduating from Lockney High School she attended  Texas Tech.

She married Charles Whitfill in Lockney on March 25, 1948 and they moved to Silverton. She was a homemaker and enjoyed needlepoint and crocheting.

She was a Christian and a member of the First Baptist Church in Silverton.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd and Leon Wofford and a sister, Wynona Allison of Lockney.

Survivors include her husband, Charles; one son, Gary Neil and wife, Melinda of Wolfforth; one daughter, Mary Lane Younger and husband, Aaron of Silverton; one brother, B.J. Wofford and wife, Gay of Lockney; one sister, Gwenn McPherson of Midland; three grandchildren, Rhett and April Montague, Cody Neil and Melinda Whitfill and Leah Whitfill and two great-grandchilren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Hospice Hands of West  Texas, 305 N. Main, Lockney,  Texas 79241 or the Silverton Cemetery.

WILLIAM H. DOUGHERTY

William (Bill) Holmes Dougherty, 81, of Sante Fe, New Mexico, (formerly of the Dougherty Community), died Tuesday, January 27, 2004 of pneumonia.

After graduating from Yale in 1945, he joined the U.S. Foreign Service and was among the first Americans to enter Warsaw after the defeat of the Germans in W.W. II.

He was a U.S. Consul in Warsaw immediately after the war and then served with Ambassador Averill Harriman in Moscow from 1946-1948. After returning to  Washington, he worked for the National Security Agency.

Mr. Dougherty moved to Tesuque, New Mexico in 1952, where, while managing the family farms in  Texas, he served as a consultant to Los Alamos National Laboratory.

He was born March 10, 1922 in Fort Worth to Frank and Penelope Dougherty. He grew up on a ranch near Tubac, Arizona.

After recovering from polio, he graduated from Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Virginia and received an honors degree in Spanish from Yale University. In 1963, he earned a Masters in Slavic Studies from the University of California at Berkeley.

In 1946 he married Jane Simons, a Foreign Service colleague, in Warsaw, in a ceremony performed by Fr. Karol Wojtyla, now Pope John Paul II. She preceded him in death in 1977. He married Julie Paltengue Dougherty, a long-time New Mexico resident, in 1982, who died in 1997.

Also preceding him in death was a brother, Samuel Alexander Dougherty in 1944.

Survivors include a daughter, Eleanor (Tammy) Dougherty of Rancho Palos Verdes, California; two sons, Frank M. Dougherty and his wife, Christine Hunker Dougherty, of Albuquerque and William David Dougherty and his wife, Clara Lucero Dougherty of Tesuque; three grandsons; and three stepsons, Roman, Luis and Carlos Buhler.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to your favorite charity. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
