Pennington
September 27, 2004
Funeral services for Russell Brent Pennington, 17, of Grapeland, were conducted Saturday, September 18, 2004, in the First United Methodist Church of Grapeland, with the Rev. Richard Dobbins, Dr. Jack Shoultze, the Rev. Jerome Simpson, the Rev. Randy Shipman, the Rev. David Bradley and Morris Ivey officiating. Burial followed in Refuge Cemetery.
He was born March 10, 1987 in Jacksonville, the son of Troy L. and LaWanda Thetford Pennington. He was a senior and attended Grapeland High School, where he was a member of the Grapeland Sandies Varsity Football Team. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Mr. Pennington died Wednesday, September 15, in Memorial Hermann Hospital, Houston.
Survivors include his parents, Troy and LaWanda Pennington of Grapeland; brothers, Aaron W. Pennington of Waco and Ross Pennington and wife, Lisa, of Grapeland; niece,  Taylor Marie Pennington; grandfather and grandmothers, Wade and Aray Pennington and Era 'Mema" Thetford, all of Grapeland; and aunts and uncles, Glynn Pennington, Stanley and Jan Pennington, Jill English and Mike Bennett, all of Grapeland, Linda Sue and Curtis Ingram of Dayton, Virginia McArthur of Houston, William Thetford of Leander, Marjorie and Roger Spake of Grapeland, Kenneth English of Mount Pleasant and Kay Smith of Crockett.
Pallbearers were Ty Kellum, Josh Key, Willie Robinson, Ethan Owens, Garrett Brown, Adrian Shepherd, Clay Boyd, Joseph Musick, Caleb Gayle, Daniel Dameron, Marshall Gayle, Albert McDaniel, Walter Tillis, T.J. Butler, Shea Martin, Arie Smith and Wayland Goodnight. Honorary pallbearers were the remainder of the Grapeland Sandies Varsity Football Team, junior varsity football team and the Sandies baseball and basketball teams.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 457, Grapeland,  Texas 75844.
Bailey & Foster Funeral Home, Palestine, was in charge of arrangements.

Haltom
September 27, 2004
Funeral services were held Monday, September 13, 2004, for Frances Haltom, 79, in the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel, with Wendell Kee officiating. Burial followed in Forest Hill Cemetery.
She was born July 6, 1925 in Hull-Daisetta, the daughter of Sherman and Connie Mae Havard Isaacks.
Mrs. Haltom died Saturday, September 11, 2004 in Northeast Medical Center in Humble. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bud Isaacks and Gene Isaacks; and sister, Marie Cockrell.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Haltom; son and daughter-in-law, Jack Wesley Haltom Jr. and wife, Cindy, of Mexia; son, Glenn Haltom of Onalaska; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Wayne Noak of LaGrange and Rita and Jerry Simms of Katy; grandchildren, Audra, Tammy, Glenn, Alan, Gregory, Laura, Sarah, Erica and Becky; and great-grandchildren, Brandon, Allyson, Bailey, Triston, Bethany, Garrett, Jessica and Gavin.
Pallbearers were Wayne Noak, Jerry Simms, Roy Gallegos and Eric Naumann.
Cochran Funeral Home, Livingston, was in charge of arrangements.

Lewis
September 27, 2004
Funeral services for Sherman R. Lewis Sr., 78, of Batson, were conducted Monday, September 13, 2004, at Batson United Pentecostal Church with Brother Johnny Nelson and Brother John Wiles officiating. Burial followed at Guedry Cemetery in Batson.
A native of Indiana, he was a member of the Mont Belvieu United Pentecostal Church. He lived most of his life in the Batson area and was a retired millwright.
Mr. Lewis died Saturday, September 11, in Batson. He was preceded in death by his parents, George  Washington Lewis Sr. and Flora Thompson Crouch.
Survivors include his children, Charles Raymond Cotton, Travis Eugene Cotton, Sherman Richard Lewis Jr., Jerry W. Lewis, Pamela Sanders and Carlton Ray Lewis, all of Batson, George Walter Lewis of Saratoga; sisters, Doris Jean Hall of Kountze and Helen Lining of Vidor; brother, Herbert Lee Hall of Silsbee; 12 brothers and sisters in Indiana; 18 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Parkhill
September 27, 2004
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 14, in the First United Methodist Church for Dr. Kenneth R. Parkhill, 82, with Dr. Tom Kennedy and the Rev. James Frazier officiating. Interment followed in Restland Memorial Park.
He was a 53-year resident of Polk County, and was active in community affairs. Dr. Parkhill was currently serving as mayor pro-tem for the City of Livingston and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He retired in 1987 after practicing veterinary medicine for 35 years.
Dr. Parkhill was born November 27, 1921 in Caldwell and was a graduate of Llano High School. His mother died at a young age, and he lived in the Beaumont area with his father and two siblings. He had wonderful memories of summers spent on his grandparents' farms in Caldwell. As soon as he graduated Llano High School, he enlisted in the military to serve his country. During World War II, he was a sergeant in the U.S. Army assigned to the Civil Affairs Regiment in Europe.
He took advantage of the GI bill offered to so many Americans following the war and attended  Texas A&M University, graduating in 1951, with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. It was also in College Station that he met the love of his life on a blind date, Mary Glenn 'Happy" Hadaway, and they were married in 1947. After graduation, they migrated to Livingston with their young son. Dr. Parkhill knew Livingston was where he wanted to practice medicine and raise a family.
Over his many years, Dr. Parkhill showed his love for the community by serving as a deacon in the First United Methodist Church and participating on many church committee. His Sunday School lessons were enjoyed by many as his knowledge of the Bible was vast. He particularly enjoyed his Friday morning breakfasts with the Methodist Men. Dr. Parkhill was an active member of many community organizations, which included the Masonic Lodge and the Lion's Club. He also served on the Livingston Independent School District Board of Trustees.
After 35 years of practicing veterinary medicine in the community. Dr. Parkhill became a volunteer at the Polk County Mission Center. Also, he and his wife enjoyed traveling around the country, but he especially enjoyed visiting family and old friends wherever they went. Dr. Parkhill was elected to serve on the Livingston City Council, starting in 1987. In addition to his many volunteer activities, Dr. Parkhill enjoyed bridge, sports (especially the Aggies and Astros), genealogy, gardening, cooking, corresponding with his family and friends via email.
Even when his health was failing him, his family says he never complained but maintained a bright optimistic outlook on life, and stayed strong for his family and friends.
Dr. Parkhill died Sunday, September 12, 2004, at his residence in Livingston. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas  Jefferson Parkhill and Minnie Mae Moore Parkhill.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Happy Parkhill of Livingston; son and daughter-in-law, David and Molly Parkhill of Houston; daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Bruce Van Wagner of Plano and Missy Parkhill and Scott Simmons of Austin; brother, Thomas Parkhill Jr. of McAllen; sister and brother-in-law, Janis and Jim Stansell of Austin; six granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; as well as many extended family and numerous dear friends.
Cochran Funeral Home, Livingston, was in charge of arrangements.

Alphin
September 27, 2004
Funeral services for Wanda L. Alphin, 71, were conducted on Friday, September 17, 2004 at Pace Funeral Home, with the Rev. Don Goodwin officiating. Graveside services followed in Grand View Cemetery, Pasadena.
She was born on April 15, 1933 in Fort Worth, the daughter of Rev. Raymond M. and Isa Lee Springer Thompson. She had been a resident of Livingston for 11 years, moving from Houston, where she had lived for 39 years. She was a member of Beech Creek Assembly of God Church in Livingston.
Mrs. Alphin, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died on Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at her residence in Livingston.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, C.L. Alphin of Livingston; three children, Teresa Weatherly and husband, Lonnie and Cynthia Dial, all of Pasadena and Ronald Alphin of Corpus Christi; four grandchildren, Michael and Ryan Weatherly and Jeff and Josh Dial, all of Pasadena; two great-grandchildren, Kenneth Dial and Gabriel Weatherly, both of Pasadena; brother, Don Thompson of Fort Worth; and sister, Sandra Hillblom of California.
Pallbearers were Michael Weatherly, Ryan Weatherly, Jeff Dial, Joshua Dial, Lonnie Weatherly and Terry Hillblom.
Pace Funeral Home, Livingston, was in charge of arrangements.

Baughman
September 27, 2004
Funeral service was held Wednesday, September 15, 2004 in Revival Center Church of God for Arthur Lee Baughman, 71, with Bro. Gerald Reeves and Bro. D.R. Manaughton officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia Cemetery in Onalaska.
He was born February 25, 1933 in Alexander County, Illinois, the son of Paul and Sylvia Drake Baughman.
Mr. Baughman died Monday, September 13, 2004, in Memorial Health System of East  Texas in Lufkin. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Mary Alice Strother; and great-grandchild, Jason Young.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Baughman; daughters, Katherine Baughman of  Texas City, Anita Gehret of  Washington State and Barbara Murphy of Denver, Colorado; sons, Edward Baughman and James Baughman, both of  Oklahoma City,  Oklahoma, Paul Bunch of Del City,  Oklahoma, Alva High of Monroeville, Alabama and Douglas High of Orange; brother, James Baughman of Havana, Illinois; 24 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Charles Tucker, Danny Rilea, Edward Hass, Louis Frazquez, Robert Cook and Larry Sweem. Honorary pallbearers were J.P. Littleton, George Dunaway, Robert Densman and Gary Cook.
Cochran Funeral Home, Livingston, was in charge of arrangements.

Brown
September 27, 2004
A memorial services for Joseph Allen Brown, 39, was held on Tuesday, September 7, in the First Baptist Church of Romayor.
He was born November 3, 1964 in Houston, the son of Melvin Denzil Brown and Marguerit Fuller. Mr. Brown died on Saturday, September 4, 2003.
Survivors include his sisters, Rebecca Barker and Cynthia Cole; brother, Melvin Brown; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Cleveland, was in charge of arrangements.

Gillean
September 27, 2004
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 16, 2004 for Jack Gillean, 72, in the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. David Gillean officiating. Burial was in Houston National Cemetery, Houston. military honors were provided by VFW Post 8568.
He was born August 17, 1932 in Lubbock, the son of Elmer E. and Thelma Orene Burns Gillean. Mr. Gillean served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Gillean died Sunday, September 12, 2004, in Memorial Medical Center - Livingston. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Roselind McCarty and Virginia Sciba.
Survivors include his wife, Billie Gillean; sons, David Gillean of Paris, Steven Gillean of Wichita, Kansas, Mark Gillean of Moore,  Oklahoma, Gary Barmore of Belton, David Golden of Ventura, California and Keith Golden of San Francisco, California; daughters, Kathy Riutzel of Ventura, California and Debbie Tindell of Kingston,  Pennsylvania; twin brother, Gene Gillean of Houston; sister, Judy Eudy of Baytown; foster adopted step-son, David Stafford of Livingston; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Cochran Funeral Home, Livingston, was in charge of arrangements.

Grisham
September 27, 2004
A memorial service was held on Saturday, September 11, 2004 for William 'Bill' Leon Grisham Jr., 40, with the Rev. Wesley L. Pate of Hemphill Baptist Church presiding.
He was born December 12, 1963 in Pasadena, the son of William and Belva 'Miss Belle" Fletemeyer Grisham Sr. Mr. Grisham moved to Point Blank over a year ago to be near his mother.
Mr. Grisham died unexpectedly on Sunday, September 5, 2004, in Memorial Medical Center, Livingston.
Survivors include his wife, Melanie Grisham; his father, William Leon Grisham Sr.; his mother, Belva Anne 'Belle" Strain; three children, Cassandra Nicole 'Casi' Grisham, age 14, William Travis 'Willie' Grisham, age 12 and Nellie Rose Grisham, age 3, all of Onalaska; brothers, Charles Lynn Grisham of Onalaska and Robert Harold West of Madisonville; and sisters, Charlotte Vilo of Onalaska and Sarah James of Spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made at First National Bank of Livingston to help with family expenses.
Cochran Funeral Home, Livingston, was in charge of arrangements.

Alford
September 13, 2004
Graveside services for Hugh Allen Alford Jr., 82, were held Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at Houston National Cemetery in Houston.
He was born January 22, 1922 in Tugalu, Mississippi, the son of Hugh and Mary Courtney Alford Sr. He served in the Army during World War II, having attained the rank of Corporal. He enlisted on August 26, 1942 in New Orleans,  Louisiana, and was discharged on December 8, 1945 in McKinney.
Mr. Alford died Monday, August 30, at his residence in Livingston.
Cochran Funeral Home, Livingston, was in charge of arrangements.
