MERCEDES, TX — Elida Olivarez, 74, a lifetime resident of Mercedes passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at her residence. She was born May 22, 1928 in Mercedes,  Texas to Emilio and Maria Rocha Tamez.

She is survived by her loving family: husband, Alfonso Olivarez of Mercedes; 5 daughters, Angelita Olivarez of Mercedes, TX, Desideria Gutierrez of Weslaco, TX, Lydia (Domingo) Mesa of Weslaco, TX, Diana Olivarez of Mercedes, TX; one daughter-in-law, Sandra Olivarez of Mercedes, TX; one son, Alfonso (Maria) Olivarez Jr. of Mercedes, TX; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her son, Alonso Olivarez.

Visitation will be held today, Friday, May 23, 2003 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary prayed at 7 p.m. tonight.

Funeral services wil be conducted on Saturday, May 24, 2003. We willdepart the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace at 12:30 p.m. for a 1 p.m. Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will then follow at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery in Weslaco,  Texas.

Pallbearers will be Alfonso Valle, Domingo Mesa Jr., Alfonso Olivarez, Randy Mesa, Steven Mesa, and Martin Gutierrez.

She was a dedicated and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

She will be dearly loved and kissed by all those who knew her.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Mercedes.

Alicia R. Aguilar

MERCEDES, TX — Alicia Rivera Aguilar, 48, a lifetime resident of Mercedes passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. She was born February 20, 1955 in Mercedes,  Texas to Encarnacion and Margarita Rivera.

She is survived by her loving family: husband, Pablo Aguilar of Mercedes, TX; one son, Hilario Aguilar of Mercedes; parents, Encarnacion and Margarita Rivera of Mercedes; 6 sisters, Estella (Martin) Sandoval of San Antonio, TX, Rosa (Miguel) Vela of Mercedes, TX, Rebecca (Juan Alberto) Sauceda, Mercedes, TX, Margarita (Jesse) Hernandez of Michigan, Ester (Jose Luis) Soto of Mercedes, Marisa (Javier) Rosales of San Antonio, TX; 2 brothers, Fernando (Lupita) Rivera, of La Feria, TX, Reynaldo (Lupita) Rivera of Mercedes, and several nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held today, Thursday, May 22, 2003 at Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with a Holy Rosary prayed at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, May 23, 2003.

We will depart the Chapel of Peace at 10:30 a.m. for an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria, TX.

Pallbearers will be Miguel Vela Jr., Juan Sauceda Jr., Fernando Rivera, Jose Luis Soto, Miguel Vela and Juan Alberto Sauceda.

She was a very dedicated and loving daughter, sister, wife, and friend. She will be dearly missed and loved by all those who knew her.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Mercedes.

Elizabeth Goldammer

TOMBALL, TEXAS — Elizabeth Goldammer, 91, passed away Monday, May 19, 2003 at a hospital in Tomball,  Texas.

Elizabeth was born on February 21, 1912 in  Oklahoma.

She had been a resident of the Valley for over 50 years, coming from  Oklahoma at the age of 13 years old. Elizabeth was a retired bookkeeper. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 40 years; member of the Harlingen High School P.T.A., where she served as President; Girl Scout Leader for many years; she was Assistant Activities Director at State T.B. Hospital; and she was the Manager for Lincoln Apartment Properties.

Elizabeth is survived by sister-in-law, Wava Woodward; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Goldammer; grandsons, Mark Goldammer, Mike Hambright, and Carl Giotta; granddaughter, Michelle Braden, and Sharon Schults; seven great grandchildren; and seveal nieces and nephews.

Graveside services only will be held Thursday, May 22, 2003 at 9 a.m. at Restlawn Memorial Park with Reverend Gene Horton officiating and Vance Greek as soloist.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Margaret Morgan Kirksey Boetes

CORAL GABLES, FLORIDA — Margaret Morgan Kirksey Boetes, known to her family and friends as Peggy, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2003 in the presence of her devoted husband, Frans Hendrik Boetes, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

Peggy was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on February 27, 1939, and moved to  Texas at the age of three. She resided most of her life in Houston, where she enjoyed a 28-year career with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. She accomplished many "firsts" in the airline industry and in the history of the worldwide KLM organization, becoming the company’s first female General Manager, serving the Southwest Region of the U.S. She was admired, emulated, and loved by her staff. When she retired from KLM, Mayor Bob Lanier recognized her achievements in the aviation industry by proclaiming October 21, 1996, Peggy Kirksey Day in the City of Houston.

Peggy married her beloved husband Frans in January of 1997. They lived in The Hague, The Netherlands until they moved to Coral Gables, Florida, in February of 2002.

Peggy was a member of the Junior League of Houston, where she served as the first Professional Chairman. The Boetes’ are members of Biscayne Bay Yacht Club and Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami.

Everything Peggy did, she did with gusto. She was an outstanding corporate leader, an excellent writer, a brilliant photographer, an extraordinary interior designer, an accomplished gourmet cook, a great entertainer, and a loving and affectionate wife, sister, aunt, and friend. A deeply spiritual woman, Peggy had a strong and gentle spirit, a brilliant mind, an unsurpassed creative intuition, and a warm and giving heart. Her life was a model of elegance and wisdom. No matter the situation, she never complained.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Morgan and James William Kirksey, Jr. of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Harlingen,  Texas. She is survived by Frans Hendrik Boetes, her husband of Coral Gables and The Hague, The Netherlands; by Betty Kirksey Park, her sister, and Dabney (Bud) Park of Coral Gables, Florida; and their children, Morgan Park Smith (Marshall) and Province Park Zamek (Paul); by John Morgan Kirksey, her brother and Kyle Kirksey of Houston,  Texas and their children, Shawn Kirksey  Jackson (William) and John Kirksey, Jr.; by her brother James W. Kirskey III of Corpus Christi,  Texas and his children, Beba Kirksey Weaver (Steven) of Corpus Christi,  Texas, and Kathryn Kirskey Stohr (Benjamin) of San Antonio,  Texas; by her grand niece, Jaime Morgan Copeland (Jerry) also of San Antonio,  Texas; by Garret Kirksey (Caroline) her uncle, of Kilmamock, Virginia; by Kathryn Kirksey McArver, her aunt, of Harlingen,  Texas and by several grand nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Peggy Boetes will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 5690 North Kendall Drive, Miami on Monday, May 19, commencing at 4 p.m.

The family would like to give heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at Baptist Hospital and VITAS who cared for Peggy with a generous and loving spirit.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Foundation for End-of-Life Care (Hospice), 100 South Biscayne Blvd, Suite 1500, Miami, Florida, 33131.

Warren H. Jackson

SAN BENITO — The family of Warren H.  Jackson lost its beloved pater familias on May 11, 2003. He was born in El Paso on April 20, 1924 to Major (then Captain) Herbert Lee  Jackson and Olive Maude Huff Jackson. The family resided on various U. S. Calvary posts including Fort Bliss (El Paso), Fort D.A. Russell (Marfa), Fort Sam Houston (San Antonio) and Fort Ringgold (Rio Grande City) where his father retired c. 1939 as commander of the Second Squadron, Twelfth Calvary.

Warren was fifteen when he graduated as valedictorian of his high school class. For the next two years, he attended Schreiner Institute (Kerrville) where her was editor of Parade, a campus literary magazine, staff writer of the Schriener campus newspaper The Mountaineer and belonged to Forensics Club (vice-president), tennis team, and Phi Theta Kappa (a national academic honor society).
He transferred to the University of  Texas (Austin) where home was the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity house and he became a member of Delta Sigma Pi (professional business administration fraternity).
In 1943 when he was nineteen, he graduated Summa Cum Laude (U.T. Austin) and Naval Officer School (Chicago), receiving a commission as lieutenant in the U. S. Navy during WWII. He served on numerous ships, between 1943-1946 in the North Atlantic and Pacific, participating in many of the major landings. He was Commanding Officer and/or Captain as well as often the youngest person on board. After the war ended, he served an additional year in the U. S. Navy steering decommissioned warships to their homeports in New Orleans and San Francisco by way of the Panama Canal.

During a long business career (South  Texas Lumber & Supply) and most recently at the First National Bank of San Benito (1st Community Bank), he was past president of the Harlingen Rotary Club and belonged to several civic groups, such as the San Benito Historical Society and the Industrial Development Authority of San Benito.

In 1949, he married Barbara Macy, daughter of W. Scott Macy and Johna Wells Macy of Whittier, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Capt. Stuart Lee  Jackson and his sister, Leigh (Mrs. Mike) Powers. He is survived by his wife Barbara Macy Jackson, two children; Jiana  Jackson and Jeffrey (Jeff) L. Jackson, four grandchildren; Brett Scott, Ashley, Trevor and Josh Jackson; two nephews; Greg Powers and John L. (Jack)  Jackson of Albuquerque, New Mexico and a Dutch exchange student daughter, Mieke Schipper Breuning, Arnhem, the Netherlands.There will be no public service.

Guadalupe Villarreal

SAN BENITO — Mr. Guadalupe Villarreal, 66, passed away at Valley Baptist Medical Center on Friday May 16,2003. He was born in San Benito and lived there all his life. He was employed with the San Benito School District for over 23 years as an electrician. He is survived by his mother, Margarita Villarreal of San Benito; his wife Delfina Villarreal; daughters, Maria Luisa (Basilio) Garcia, Juanita De La Garza, Esmeralda Trevino, Dora Elia (Ruben) Morales, all of San Benito; sons Lupe (Blanca) Villarreal Jr., Gilberto (Florencia) Villarreal, Francisco (Anna Maria) Villarreal, Jesus Enrique (Manuela) Villarreal, all of San Benito; 15 grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brothers, Samuel Villarreal of Puerto Rico, Domingo Villarreal of San Benito, Efrain Villarreal of Harlingen, Armando Villarreal of Harlingen, Jose Luis Villarreal of San Benito, Horacio Villarreal of San Benito; sisters, Rosalinda Ramirez of Michigan, Maria Mercado of San Benito, and Olivia Sanchez of San Benito.

Mr. Villarreal was preceded in death by his father, Francisco Villarreal; sister, Elena Dominguez and brother, Reynaldo Villarreal.

Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be held on at 10 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2003 with Father Ignacio "Nacho" Luna officiating. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Rolando Canales, Jesus Villarreal, Gilberto Villarreal, Michael Villarreal, Manuel Villarreal, and Ruben Morales.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home.

Manuel A. De La Rosa

HARLINGEN, TX — Manuel A. De La Rosa, 62, passed away on May 15, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Manuel was born in Brownsville, TX, but lived in Harlingen most of his life. He will be dearly missed by his friends, family, and those whose path he crossed.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Elva and his two daughters. His children are Cynthia Rimmer, and her husband James, of Dallas, and Dr. Bonnie De La Rosa, and her fiance Cristian Villarreal, of Harlingen.

He is also survived by his mother, Esperanza De La Rosa, of Brownsville; his sister, Carmen Dreumont, of San Antonio, and her husband, Alcides; his brother, Hector, of Brownsville, and his wife, Teresa; and his brother, Mario, of Laredo, and his wife Berta; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Higinio De La Rosa.

The funeral was held yesterday, Saturday May 17, 2003, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m.St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Interment was held at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the auspices of the American Legion Post #205 and VFW Post #2410.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church Building Fund.

Pallbearers were Joe A. Villarreal, Chuey Ramos, George De La Rosa, Sonny De La Rosa, Mario De La Rosa, Jr. and Alcides Dreumont.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.

Gunnery Sgt. Larry L. Wisnoski

HARLINGEN — Gunnery Sergeant Larry L. Wisnoski was born in Houston,  Texas on April 4, 1935. He passed away Thursday, May 15, 2003 in Harlingen,  Texas.

After graduating from Cypress Fairbanks High School (1953), Gunnery Sergeant Wisnoski enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1953. After serving for 20 years, Gunnery Sergeant Wisnoski retired with Honorable Service. From 1979-2003, Gunnery Sergeant Wisnoski joined the staff at Marine military Academy in Harlingen,  Texas.

His awards and decorations include: Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross for Gallantry, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Gunnery Sergeant Wisnoski is preceded in death by his father, Theodore Stafford, and his son Christian Eric Wisnoski.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Isabel B. Wisnoski of Portland,  Texas and their three children, Norma (Nasser) Zangebar Sabegh, Stefan (Migum) Wisnoski, and Lisette (Alex) Rosales.
He is also survived by his mother, Marguerite (Johnny)  Johnson and his sisters and brothers.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday May 18, 2003 at the Limbaugh Funeral Home in Portland,  Texas with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. that evening. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2003 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Portland,  Texas. Interment will follow at San Patricio Memorial Gardens in Portland,  Texas.

A memorial service will be held at the Marine military Academy in Harlingen,  Texas on Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at 6:30 p.m.

Luciano "Chano" Lopez

SEBASTIAN — Luciano "Chano" Lopez passed away on Friday, May 16, 2003 after a courageous, hard fought battle with cancer.

Chano is survived by the Vela family and the numerous family friends that he left behind. He will always be remembered for the beautiful, caring human being that he was. Though he had no formal education, Chano was highly educated in the school of life. He worked hard all of his life and made an impact in the lives of those that he met and came in contact with.

We would like to thank all of his earth angels from Valley Baptist Medical Center and the Heart of the Valley Hospice of San Benito for comforting Chano.

Chano we will always keep you in our heart. We love you, Chano.
