He was preceded in death by his parents, Luz Davila and Abelarda Ramirez Davila; a brother, Uvaldo Torres; and a sister, Lupita Gonzalez Quiroz.
He is survived by 3 brothers, Jose Guadalupe (Leticia) Garza of Houston, Juan (Aleja) Davila of Fremont, Ohio and Antonio (Juanita) Davila of Weslaco, TX. He is also survived by 8 sisters, Mary (Roy) Kosel, Esperanza Gonzalez (Lupe) Miranda, Maria Elena (Librado) Amaya and Mary (Abelardo) Ramos all of San Benito and Isabel (Vicente) Arizmendi of Rio Hondo, Rosa (Juan) Molina of Minatare, Nebraska, Juanita Hernandez of Fremont, Ohio, and Lupita (Juan) Macias of Burley, Idaho, and several nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 29th, from 10:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. at the Henry Thomae Funeral Chapel, 701 N. Bowie, San Benito.
Funeral Services will be Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in San Benito with burial at the San Benito City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Guaristo Gonzalez, Jr., Eliazar Gonzalez, Lupe Miranda, Vicente Arizmendi, Abelardo Ramos, and Gerardo Ramos. Honorary pallbearers will be Librado Amaya, Jr., Antonio Davila, Roy Kosel and Juan Davila.

Mary F. Stafford
HARLINGEN, TX — Mary Frances Stafford, 79, of Harlingen, Texas passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at La Hacienda Healthcare in Harlingen. She was born August 23, 1925 in Flint, Michigan. Daughter of the late Kenneth and Carrie Hawley.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Carrie Hawley; brothers, Charles Hawley and Edwin Hawley; daughter, Deborah Kay Hilton; sons, Charles Alan Stafford and Stanley Brian Stafford.
She is survived by her sister, Norma (Charles) Harger; brother, Donald (Beverly) Hawley; son, Steven (Judy) Stafford; daughter, Denise (Paul) Geiger; four grandchildren, Cynthea E. Stafford, Shannon S. Stafford, Mitchell W. Marvin, Bobbie J. Marvin; and one great grandchildren, Makayle K. Stafford.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 30, 2005 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Home Chapel in San Benito. Cremation will follow after the visitation to Sacred Park Crematorium.

Robert J. Custer
WESLACO, TX — Robert J. Custer, 90, of Weslaco, Texas passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2005, and has gone to be with the Lord. He was born on December 6, 1914 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Joseph Frank Custer and Mary Riley Custer.
Robert was a manufacturer‘s representative and owned his own company, the R.J. Custer Company, which he ran successfully for many years. In 1987, Robert retired and moved to Llano Grande Lake Park where he lived for sixteen years. He was also a long standing member of the Weslaco Elks Lodge #2057. He was currently residing at a cottage in John Knox Village.
Robert is preceded in death by his wife: Margaret Flynn Custer; Father: Joseph Frank Custer; mother: Mary Riley Custer; and sister: Katherine Bello Griswold.
He is survived by his loving family: One Daughter: Patricia Custer Mendina of Richardson, Texas; Two Sons: James Custer of Mankato, Minnesota, Daughter-In-Law: Judith Custer of Minnesota, Robert (Jill) Custer of Germantown, Wisconsin; His Dear Companion of 14 Years: Evelyn Wand of Mercedes, Texas; One brother: Richard (Sylvia) Custer of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; also surviving are five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30th, 2005 at Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace, an 11:00 a.m. Chapel Service will be officiated by Deacon Robert Cantu. Interment will then follow at Ebony Grove Cemetery in Mercedes, Texas. Special thanks to Knapp Medical Center‘s ICU, Dr. Luis Mejia, Dr. Ortiz, and the Med Center at John Knox Village.
Robert was known for his love of music and good books, his sense of humor and keen Irish wit. He is greatly loved and will be missed by his family and friends.

HARLINGEN — Concepcion Jimenez, 54, a native of Sebastian, TX. whom had lived in Harlingen most of her life entered into eternal rest Friday April 1, 2005 at Harlingen Medical Center.
She is survived by one daughter Sylvia (Mario) Narvaez of Harlingen. 5 grandchildren: Raul Yanez III, Valerie Yanez, Martin Guerra, Jr., Crystal Narvaez and Francisca Arguelles. Four sisters San Juanita Sanchez and Adela Escobar both of Harlingen, Dora Torres of Texas City, TX., Leonarda Castillo of Houston, one brother Juan Escobar of Woodsboro, TX.
Visitation will be held Sunday April 3, 2005 from 1pm to 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Chapel service will be Monday April 4, 2005 at 10 am at Trinity at Harrison Funeral Home with Pastor Josue Cepeda officiating. Burial will follow to Guadalupe Cemetery in Sebastian, TX.

Samuel W. Scales
HARLINGEN, TX — Mr. Samuel Webb Scales, died at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Columbus MS on Friday, March 25, 2005 at the ate of 84.
The Visitation was held on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville, MS from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The funeral was conducted on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 from the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Starkville, MS. A military Burial followed at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Starkville, MS.
Mr. Scales is survived by his wife, Bette Scales of Starkville; and children, Hunter L. Scales and Twila Hamilton of Austin, TX, Bette S. Mullins and Walton Mullins of Memphis, TN, and John S. Scales and Jennifer Scales of Atlanta, GA. Mr. Scales has five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Sam Scales was a native of Starkville, MS. He completed undergraduate work at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee; Mississippi State University in Starkville, MS and the Vanderbilt Law School in Nashville, TN.
While retired in Starkville, MS, Mr. Scales served for the past twelve years as the Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army, and was bestowed with the title of Civilian Aide to the Secretary of Army Emeritus two years ago. Mr. Scales‘ career highlights included: Vice President of the First National Bank, Harlingen, Texas; Chairman of the Board Starr Associates, Bangkok, Thailand; Liaison Officer of Phoenix Assurance, Sidney Australia; Chairman of the Board of Services Y Comisiones S.A. de C.V. in Mexico City, Mexico; Senior Vice President of Continental Insurance Company and Regional Vice President for Latin America,
Mr. Scales served in the U.S. Marine Corps., from 1941 to 1945 and attained the rank of Sgt. Major. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1948 to 1972 and retired as a Lt. Colonel.
Mr. Scales was a member of the Episcoapal Church of the Resurrection, Starkville, MS.
Andres "Chino" Salinas
MERCEDES — Coach Andres "Chino" Salinas, 62, entered the Lord’s Heavenly Kingdom on April 1, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.
He was born on March 5, 1943 in Mercedes, Texas, son of Jose and Lily Cantu-Salinas. He is preceded in death by his father Jose Salinas.
He graduated from Mercedes High School in 1963. He served in the US Navy on the USS Meredith and was a member of the American Legion in Mercedes. Mr. Salinas graduated from Pan American College in Edinburg. He was employed by the Weslaco Independent School District, where he taught and coached at the Central Middle School for 32 years. Coach Salinas coached football, basketball, soccer and track. Aside from his job he coached for Mercedes Little League for more than 30 years. He was also a Scout Master in Mercedes for Troop 17 in the early 1980’s.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years Teresa Salas Salinas; 3 children, Cindy L. (Armando) Gonzalez Jr. of La Feria, Andres (Mary Lou) Salinas Jr., of Port Isabel, Gina M. (Hugo) Cabrera of San Antonio; mother Lily Cantu Salinas; mother-in-law , Tomasa S. Dominguez brother and sisters Jose G. Salinas, Manuela S. Bodnar, Rosa S. (Robert) Fishbough; grandchildren Armando Gonzalez III., Andy III., E.J., Nyssa, Vanessa, Omar Salinas, Gabriel and Anabela Cabrera; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be today, April 3, 2005 from 1 to 9 p.m., at Hawkins Funeral Home in Weslaco with a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m., Monday, April 4, 2005 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in La Feria. Interment will follow at the Mercedes Catholic Cemetery in Mercedes. military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Post 205 and V.F.W. 2410 of Harlingen.
Pallbearers will be Oscar Castillo, Ismael Cantu, Robert Cruz, George Cardenas, Armando Garcia, and Ricky Rivera. Honorary pallbearers will be Armando Gonzalez III., Andres Salinas III., E. J. Ybarra Salinas, Gabriel Cabrera.

Fred Ratliff, Jr.
HARLINGEN/SAN BENITO, TX — Fred "Racle" Ratliff, Jr., 59, crossed over to be with our Lord, on Thursday, March 31, 2005 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.
He is preceded in death by his father, Fred Ratliff, Sr.; and brothers, Frank Ratliff and Ricardo Ratliff.
He is survived by his loving wife, Eustolia Ratliff of Harlingen, TX; daughters, Nancy (Fermin) Gaytan of Harlingen, Michelle Ratliff of Harlingen, and Virginia (Rick) Garza of Houston; his sons, Fred Ratliff, III of Harlingen and Bobby (Virginia) Ratliff of Houston; his mother, Rebecca Ratliff of San Benito; sisters, Maria del Roble (Eduardo) Benavides of San Benito, Rebecca Rodriguez of Corpus Christi, Raquel Garcia of Houston, Rosalva (David) Miller of San Benito, Ruby Leal of San Benito, Janie (Arturo) Ortiz of Dallas; and brother, Eduardo Garcia of Houston; 16 Grandchildren, 3 Great-Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 1 p.m. - 9 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. today Sunday, April 3, 2005 at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel.
A Funeral Mass will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 4, 2005 at St. Theresa Catholic Church, San Benito with interment to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Arlan Allan Brune
SAN ANTONIO/HARLINGEN — Arlan Allan Brune, 53, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2005. Arlan was born in Hendricks, Minnesota on November 6, 1951 to Harlan and Eva Brune. He was an electrician and member of the San Antonio, Texas Union #278; he also was a member of the Harlingen Elks Lodge #1889. Arlan met Joan Miller and later they married on December 15, 2003 in Rio Hondo, Texas.
Arlan is survived by his loving wife, Joan Brune of San Antonio; mother, Eva Brune of Harlingen; sister, Susan (Roy) Stary of Pasadena, TX; niece, Katrine Huey of LaPorte, TX; nephew, Marshall (Crystal) Stary of Pasadena, TX; great niece’s, Alyssa and Savanah; great nephew, Austin and extended family, Les Parker and Sara Villareal and boys, James, Bryan; Steven and Blaine Parker, boys, Steven, James; and Best Champion his cat Noser.

HARLINGEN / SAN BENITO — Maria L. Gaytan, 79, passed away at home Saturday, April 2nd, due to a lengthy illness. She is preceded in death by her husband, Felipe, sons, Pedro and Robertito, parents Cruz and Angelita Longoria and brothers, Jesus, Lupe, Jimmy, Freddy, Mike, and Benny Longoria and one sister, Zenaida Balboa.
She is survived by her loving children, Felipe (Esperanza) Gaytan Jr, Mary Lou (Mando) Carrera, and Adriana (David) Noriega of California, Omar (Lisa) Gaytan Jr of Arizona, Noemi (Steve) Grayer of Tennessee, Eduardo (Elena) Gaytan, Roberto (Josie) Gaytan, Emma (Eddie) Garza, Maria Juanita (Roberto) Aguilar, and Omar Gaytan all of San Benito, Velma Garcia of Los Fresnos, Fermin (Nancy) Gaytan of Harlingen, Rosalie (Benny) Garcia of La Feria, and Armando (Cindy) Gaytan of Austin, TX, one sister, Eva (Abel) Uballe and one brother, Jose (Chavela) Longoria, of California, 44 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, 2 great – great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be 3 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Monday and 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Tuesday with rosary service on both days at 7 p.m. at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral mass will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6th at St. Theresa Catholic Church in San Benito with interment at San Jose Cemetery.

Ruby Marvella Bates
HARLINGEN/OLMITO — Ruby Marvella Bates, 83, entered the kingdom of Christ early in the afternoon on April 2, 2005 at Harlingen Medical Center. She was born on March 6, 1922 in Russelville, Arkansas. Mrs. Bates was a member of the Grimes Street Church of Christ in Harlingen, Texas and also a passed member of the Church of Christ on Price Rd. in Brownsville, Texas. She was also a member of the Brownsville Art League for many years, was a recognized Artist who won many awards for her artwork. Mrs. Bates was a former telephone operator for SouthWestern Bell for many years.
She is survived by 4 children: Harold Dean "Bud" Bates, Beverly Gurley, Hugh S. Bates, Glenda K. Williams. 15 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Siblings: Mary Burkhalter, Leona Reilly, and Amy Maness. She was preceded in death by: her husband Don H. Bates, son Jim Bates, parents Maude and Jim Coots, brother George Coots, and sister Mamie Goins.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, and graveside service at 2 p.m. at Mont Meta Memorial Park with Rev. Andy Joiner officiating.

Irma C. Gorena
HARLINGEN — Irma C. Gorena 67 was welcomed into heaven on April 1, 2005, she leaves to cherish her memory an only daughter, Nora Finner, of Combes, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents Antonio and Consuelo Caballero, a sister, Rosa Caballero, a brother Antonio Caballero Jr. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren great- grand children and all who loved her. She was the loving sister of Olga Avalos, of San Benito, TX; Noemi Rodriguez, of Houston, TX and Aaron Caballero of Fresno, Calif.
She is remembered for her sense of humor, her gentle Spirit and her Unconditional love that contributed so much to the lives of everyone who had the good fortune of knowing her. She said, "I am not afraid". "I’m looking forward to the resurrection".
Irma suffered ill health toward the end of her life but faced this condition with great strength and positive outlook, taking each day as it came and relishing small pleasures . Every morning she woke up with a smile on her face and thanked god for letting her live another day.
Heartfelt appreciation goes to all those who helped in her final days. Special thanks to her dear sister Olga who was there through her many illness. To her provider Mary who treated her with such love and Tenderness and the Valley Baptist CCU nursing staff, for their excellent care and kindness, and to our family and friends Whose many phone calls kept our spirits up.
A private graveside service will be at Combes Cemetery on Monday April 4, 2005. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.
