Chapa
Lydia Chapa, 40, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004.
Visitation was to be held Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel. Rosary was to be recited that evening at 7 o’clock at the same location. Funeral Mass will be celebrated today (Saturday) at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with Father Richard Gonzales officiating. Ms. Chapa will be cremated.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Cortez, Rick and Ricky Flores, Jimmy Aguirre, Paul Dembowski and Erick Echavarry.
Ms. Chapa was born on May 1, 1964, to Jose Sr. and Maria (Garcia) Chapa. She was employed by the University of  Texas Medical Branch as a registered nurse. She was preceded in death by her father.
Survivors include her companion, Minnie Cortez; her children, Jeffery and Lucas Cortez; her mother, Maria Chapa; her brothers, Joe (Jamie) Chapa and Daniel Chapa, all of Beeville; her sisters, Mary (Paul) Dembowski and Christina (Jimmy) Aguirre, all of Beeville, and Cecilia (Rick) Flores of Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Newton
Maxine E. Newton, 90, of Charlotte, N.C., died Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Sardis Oaks Nursing Home there.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at Providence Presbyterian Church.
A native of Fayette, Iowa, Mrs. Newton was a retired school teacher and a member of First United Methodist Church in Beeville. She attended Upper Iowa University. Her husband, Paul A. Newton, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her three children, Terry Newton of Versailles, Ky., and his daughters, Nancy, Linda and Lisa; Jon Newton of Austin and his sons, Chris and Wade; and Debbie Zboch of Weddington, N.C., and her sons, Bob and Marc; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 106 E. Cleveland St., Beeville, TX 78102.
Arrangements are being handled through Wilson Chapel of Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, Charlotte, N.C.

Caballero
Gil L. Caballero, 82, died Friday, July 2, 2004, in San Antonio.
Visitation was held Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Angelus Funeral Home. Rosary was recited that evening at 7:30 at the same location. Funeral Mass was celebrated Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, with Father Lukose Thirunelliparambil officiating. Burial followed in Beeville Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Freddie Aguirre Jr., Jose C. Gonzales, Augustine Quintanilla, Matthew Caballero, Rene Dominguez, Martin Gonzales, John Caballero and Justin Caballero.
Mr. Caballero was born on Sept. 1, 1921, in Karnes City, to Mateo and Barbarita Lopez Caballero. He served in the U.S. Army. He married Amelia Chapa Caballero on July 18, 1942, in Runge. He resided in Pettus and was a construction worker in the oil field. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.
Survivors include his wife, Amelia Chapa Caballero of Pettus; seven children, Adolfo Caballero and wife Jesusa of Universal City, Othilia Dominguez and husband Luciano and Lupita Garza and husband Ruben, all of Beeville, Eloisa Aguirre and husband Alfredo of Kenedy, Amelia Gonzales of Karnes City, Gil Caballero and wife Mary of Port Lavaca, and Daniel Caballero and wife Mary of Mathis; three brothers, Alfonso Caballero and wife Mary of Agua Dulce, Enrique Caballero and wife Yolanda of Corpus Christi and Ruben Caballero of Blue Ridge; five sisters, Anita Hernandez and husband Sam of Premont,  Calif., Ida Garcia of Carrollton, Beatriz Mendoza and husband Gilberto of San Leon, Eloisa Barrera and husband Pete of Deer Park and Dalia Moore and husband John of Houston; 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Erler
Larry Allen Erler, 66, died Sunday, July 4, 2004.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 5 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel. Funeral services will take place on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Arlon Retzloff officiating. Special music will include “Onward Christian Soldiers,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “Just a Closer Walk With Thee,” with pianist Mary Ellen Thoms. Burial will follow in the Three Rivers Cemetery in Three Rivers.
Pallbearers will be George Harris, Jim Dorsey, Ronnie Retzloff, Carroll Retzloff, Don George, Gordon Benham, Jim Scotten, Johnny Bond, Frank Sugarek and Edward Wicker.
Mr. Erler was born in Lenz on April 8, 1938, to Arno and Alice (Retzloff) Erler. He graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1956, then went on to  Texas A&I University in Kingsville. He graduated in 1960 with a bachelor of science degree in agricultural secondary education. In 1965 he earned his master of science degree in public school administration. He worked for the Beeville Independent School District for 18 years and Kenedy ISD for nine years. In his years in the public schools, he worked as a teacher, secondary level vocational ag science and special education, and coach. During the years 1967 through 1971 he worked as the foreman for the Claude-Heard Ranch.
He married his first wife, Gaye LaNell Dubose in August 1969 and they had two children, Tracey and Shannon. Mr. Erler worked for the  Texas A&M Agricultural Experiment Station from 1974 to 1978, then worked at Hughes Oil and Gas from 1978 to 1979. During the years 1982 through 1986, he worked for H.B. Zachry and Zimmer Floral and Nursery.
Mr. Erler had a long history of civic involvement. He belonged to the Kiwanis Club from 1968 to 1983, serving as its president from 1974 to 1975. He was a Western Week director from 1973 to 1981 and volunteered with the Bee County Junior Livestock and Homemakers Show board from 1960 to 1986. He also served on the Bee County Farm Bureau and the Young People’s Committee (1964). He loved farming and ranching.
In 1998, he married Elizabeth Rose McCown in Beeville.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth (Bettye) Rose McCown Erler of George West; two daughters, Tracey Lynn Baker and husband Barry C. Baker of New Braunfels and Shannon Leigh Freiley and husband Drew Freiley of San Antonio; a sister, Rosie Forehand of Three Rivers; a nephew, Rex Forehand and wife Dianne of Georgetown; a niece, Tina McKay and husband Noel McKay of Georgetown; a grandson, Quinten Franklin Baker; three great-nieces, Olivia and Ashley Forehand and Emilia McKay; and a great-nephew, Simon McKay.
Memorials may be made to the Vocational Ag, FFA and 4-H Club at A.C.  Jones High School, 1902 N. Adams St., Beeville, TX 78102.

Rojas
Joe Garcia Rojas, 70, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, in Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville.
Mr. Rojas was born on Jan. 10, 1934, in Beeville to Daniel and Francisca Rojas. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Maria Sifuentes, Hermelinda Ortega and Enriqueta Tijerina; and five brothers, Blas, Augustin, Arturo, Frank and Erasmo Rojas.
He was retired from Sherman Williams, doing fine frame work and antique refinishing, and also from Modern Pipe as a machinist. Mr. Rojas was a member of St. James Catholic Church. He was married on July 11, 1952, to his wife, Mary Rojas of Beeville.
Other survivors include three daughters, Frances (John) Beemer of Humble, Linda Rojas Flores of La Porte and Margaret (Daniel) Mesquita of Beeville; three brothers, Benjamin Rojas of Hartford, Ct., and Daniel and Onofre Rojas, both of Beeville; one sister, Ermila Canales of San Antonio; three grandchildren, Joseph Rojas Flores, Jessica Daniella Beemer and Johnathan Beemer.
Visitation was held on Sunday from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 o’clock that evening. Mass of resurrection was celebrated at St. James Catholic Church on Monday at 10 a.m. with burial following at Beeville Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were John Beemer, Daniel Mesquita, Joseph Rojas Flores, Johnathan Beemer, Joseph Garza and Steve Rojas. Honorary pallbearers were Alfonso Arredondo, Luz Garza, Julio Sanchez, Eddie Rojas, Ralph Garza, Edward Sanchez, Frank Garza Sr. and Jerry Sanchez.

Rutledge
Funeral services for Jay Rutledge, 70, were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Eckols Chapel in Kenedy. Interment followed in the Kenedy Cemetery.
Mr. Rutledge died Friday, July 2, 2004, in Haughton, La. He was a retired director of marketing with Mortin Thiokol Corp. and a resident of Haughton, La.
Survivors include his wife, Ida Sue Rutledge; a daughter, Sue Jan Rutledge Dymond and husband Jeff of Duluth, Ga.; a son, John Jay Rutledge of Rowlett; a sister, Brownie Ann Rutledge Coppinger of Corpus Christi; a brother, Ronnie Van Rutledge of Beeville; and two grandchildren, Bailey Anne and Zachary James Dymond.

Smejkal
Frank A. Smejkal, 87, died Thursday, July 1, 2004.
Visitation was held Saturday from 1 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel. Rosary was recited Saturday at 7 p.m. at the same location. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 2 p.m. on Sunday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, with Father Richard Gonzales assisted by Father Lukose Thirunelliparambil officiating. Special music included “How Great Thou Art” and “Peace,” with organist Doug Burton and singer Linda Ford. Burial followed in Beeville Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Frank Smejkal Jr., Scott and Bryan Smejkal, Timothy Van Allen, Waylon Ford, John Mills and Jennifer McCoy. Honorary pallbearers were the Knights of Columbus, Dr. John Hester, Andre Salme, Elton Franke, Dr. Sam Hogue and Dr. Joseph Larakers.
Mr. Smejkal was born in Yoakum on April 2, 1917, to Jim and Francis (Mikes) Smejkal. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Rose Targac on April 6, 1937, in Yoakum. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and an electrician, establishing Smejkal Electric in November 1949.
Mr. Smejkal was known as an entrepreneur and an investor. He was one of the original workmen who helped build NAS Chase Field, and was there for the opening and closing of the facility. He also served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter and one son-in-law.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Targac Smejkal; three sons, Gus Smejkal and wife Evelyn and Johnny J. Smejkal and wife Dorothy, both of Beeville, and Frank M. Smejkal of Corpus Christi; four daughters, Barbara Van Allen and husband Allan of Bastrop, Brenda Mills and husband Larry and Linda Ford and husband Glenn, all of Beeville, and Sandra McCoy and husband Dr. Pat McCoy of Skidmore; 26 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Knights of Columbus or the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Building Fund, 609 E. Gramman St., Beeville, TX 78102; and to Paul Van Allen, Missionary of China, 477Shiloh, Bastrop, TX 78602.

Romaldo “Tiny” Camacho, 36, of Charco died Thursday, July 1, 2004.
Mr. Camacho was born in Goliad on Feb. 21, 1968, to Marcelo and Guadalupe (Rodriguez) Camacho. He was a Catholic and an offshore driller.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald Camacho.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria Diaz Camacho; his daughters, Sara and Courtney Camacho; and his sons, Paul, Bryan and Romaldo Camacho, all of Charco; his sisters, Julie Montelongo of Rosenburg, Mary Alice Arredondo of Needville, Estella Garcia of Pleak, Patricia Carrizales of Beeville and Diana Solis of Houston; his brothers, Marcelo Camacho of Pawnee, Mariano Camacho of Needville, Daniel and Alfredo Camacho of Charco, Alex Camacho of Beeville, Alfonso and Roger Camacho of Goliad, Armando Camacho of Houston and Joe Camacho of Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A rosary was to be recited Friday at 7 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Goliad. Funeral Mass will be celebrated today (Saturday) at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception with Father Ralph Baidoo officiating. Burial will follow in Charco’s Stockton Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Roger, Alfonso, Armando and Mariano Camacho, Zane Brown and Philip Carrizales. Honorary pallbearers will be Pride of Michigan rig employees.
Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Foundation.
Funeral arrangements were handled through Colonial Funeral Home, Goliad.

Furrow
Susan Marie Smith Furrow, 61, died Thursday, June 24, 2004, at Christus Spohn Hospital in Beeville.
A memorial service was held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Christian Center with the Rev. Bob Tomlinson officiating. Mrs. Furrow was cremated.
She was born in Albuquerque, N.M., on Nov. 12, 1942, to Carl F. and Agnes Ida (Brown) Smith. She married Monte Joe Furrow on May 30, 1968, in Albuquerque. She resided in Beeville and was a homemaker. She was a member of Trinity Christian Center.
Survivors include her husband, Monte Joe Furrow of Beeville; two daughters, Elizabeth Ida Foster and husband James of Los Lunas, N.M., and Charlotte Ann Blucher and husband Thomas of Beeville; four grandchildren, Bryan, Nicole, Mychael and Betheny; two sisters, Mary Anna Edger and husband Craig of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Sylvia L. Smith of Los Lunas, N.M., and her parents, Carl and Agnes Smith of Los Lunas, N.M.
