BASHAW
Florence Katherine Barfoot Bashaw, "Sweetie", 72, passed away Friday, March 23, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Robert Sr.; three daughters, Laura Arcangioli, Teri Ellis and Renee Edwards; one son, Robert Jr., who preceded her in death; grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, 12609 Patterson Ave.

CHUMNEY
Elizabeth C. Chumney, 71, of Farmville, died March 23, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. Craig Chumney; and brother, Thomas Harold Chambers Jr. She is survived by three sons, Warren Anthony "Tony" Trent and his wife, Charlotte of Keysville, Michael Theodore "Ted" Trent and his wife, Bonnie of Madisonville and Thomas William "Bill" Trent of Hunington Beach, Calif.; a brother, Jack Chambers; a sister, Dorothy Chambers Oliver, both of Red House; four stepchildren, H. Craig Chumney, Phyllis Walker, Iva Otterfarra, Mary Lynch; seven grandchildren, Steve, Jennifer, Zack, Tonya, Keith, Michael, and Sarah Trent; one great-grandchild, C. Christopher Trent. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, Va. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Heritage Baptist Church with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

CHURCH
Bruce A. Church Sr., 61, of Richmond, died March 24, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Toni Church; daughter, Deborah C. Collier; son, Bruce A. Church Jr.; sisters, Deborah Boyden and Mary Webb; brother, Cedric (Fred) Church; granddaughter, Samantha Collier. Mr. Church served in the U.S. Marines for 15 and a half years with three tours of Vietnam and was a life member of the Bensley-Bermuda Volunteer Rescue Squad with 10 plus years of service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt.10). His funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Private family interment. In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058.

CLARK
James D. Clark Jr., 84, died March 24, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Agnes Jean Clark; one daughter, Sharon Clark Chang of Fairfax; three sons, James D. Clark III and wife, Mary Pat, Brian Patrick Clark and wife, Jane, and Jeffrey Meredith Clark and wife, Helen of Bellingham, Wash.; three granddaughters and seven grandsons. Mr. Clark was a graduate of the University of Richmond, member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was associated with WRVA Radio, and later WWBT Television. He retired as Vice President of Sales. Mr. Clark later was Director of Research and Information for the County of Henrico. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and where a Christian Wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. at St. Bridget's Catholic Church. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Little Sisters of the Poor or St. Bridget's Catholic Church.

CLARK
Robert E. Clark, 69, of Ashland, the former owner of D&D Tire Repair, died March 24, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Judy A. Clark; ten children, Robert Clark Jr. of Defiance, Ohio, Cathy Boynton of Old Towne, Maine, Vera Ellen Gibson-Proffitt of Glen Allen, James Petty Jr. of Montpelier, Lynn Johnson of Hull, Ga., Scott Petty of Richmond, Rodney Clark of Doswell, Helen Powers of Richmond, Michael Lynch of Doswell and Christy Lynch of Louisa; two brothers, Donald Clark of Virginia Beach, and Ervin Clark of New York; two sisters, Rosalie Quinn of Bangor, Maine and Dottie Ratleff of Southington, Conn.; 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Clark was a veteran of the Korean Confict, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Ashland Moose Lodge #2099. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Reid Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday. Interment Roselawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

COWLES
Gladys Steven Cowles, 80, of Ruther Glen, died Saturday, March 24, 2001 in HealthSouth in Richmond. Born in Essex County, she was a member and deacon of County Line Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir for over 50 years. She was the widow of Arthur H. Cowles Jr. Survivors include four sons, Arthur H. Cowles III of Greensboro, N.C., Richard H. Cowles of Carolina Beach, N.C., Calvin D. Cowles of Newnan, Ga. and Gary S. Cowles of Richmond; two sisters, Lois Dawson of Tappahannock and Eva Johnson of Baltimore; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at 11 a.m. in County Line Baptist Church with Rev. Fred Skaggs officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, Monday 7 to 9 p.m.

CROCKFORD
Virginia Allen Crockford, 83, of Richmond, widow of W. Hamilton Crockford III, died on Saturday, March 24, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Katharine Crockford and her husband, Richard Goodman of Somerville, Mass.; her son, W. Hamilton Crockford IV and his wife, Marianne of Alexandria, Va.; four grandchildren, Kirsten, David and Michelle Crockford and Jenna Goodman; one sister, Thelma Elmore of Wytheville; and two brothers, Daniel Allen of Salem, and Hugh Ledford Allen of Bristol, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Crockford was a member of the Richmond School Board from 1962 to 1972, and was the Chairman from 1968 to 1972. She was president of the Richmond and the State PTA's, the League of Women Voters, the Central Virginia Health System's Agency, a member of the Virginia Health Planning Agency, a founder of the Volunteers and Juvenile Courts Project, a trustee of the VCU School of Social Work, and active in many other civic, educational and health related organizations in the city, state and nationally. Her remains rest at the Central Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 27, 2001 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held 12 Noon on Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Interment will be private. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 520 N. Boulevard, Richmond, Va. 23220.

DAFFRON
Ellen Ahern Daffron, 88, of Richmond, died Friday, March 23, 2001. She was the widow of William C. Daffron and is survived by her daughter, MaryEllen Daffron; three sons and daughters-in-law, William C. Jr. and Camille, John A. and Barbara, and Robert E. and Jane Daffron; eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Harrison; and two brothers, Charles and Richard Ahern. Her remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and with a Rosary service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Mrs. Daffron was an active member of the Catholic Women's Club and volunteered for over 25 years with Meals on Wheels. She had a number of private art shows throughout the city while she was an active member of the James River Art Club. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

DYKE
Chessie Belle Burke Dyke, 88, of Richmond, passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday, March 23, 2001. Mrs. Dyke was the widow of John William Dyke, who passed away in June 1970, she was also preceded in death by her son, Douglas M. Dyke. She is survived by seven children, Lt. General Charles W. Dyke (U.S. Army Retired) of McLean, Va., John R. Dyke and Dwight L. Dyke, both of Richmond, Dolores Dyke Follin of Boston, Mass., Geraldine Dyke Howell of Greensboro, N.C., Sidney B. Dyke of Norfolk, and Nancy Dyke Monroe of Carrollton, Ga. Mrs. Dyke was a warm, gracious mother who delighted in her 24 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Dyke worked full-time as a housewife and mother until age 55 when she began a 31 year career at Westport Manor and University Park Nursing Homes. She retired in 1999 at age 86. The family will receive friends 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, with interment in Westhampton Memorial Park.

EDWARDS
Mrs. Willie Y. Edwards of 2906 Monet Ct., died March 20, 2001. Funeral services will be held Monday (today) at Towell of Deliverance COGIC. Dr. Garna Trafton officiating. Eulogy by Bishop James C. Lane Jr. Interment Roselawn Memory Gardens. Arrangements by Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd.

GIANFORTONI
Elenore Gianfortoni of Lake Worth, Fla. and formerly of New York City died peacefully March 23, 2001 in Richmond, Va. She will be greatly missed by her brother, Howard Koss of Potomac, Md.; her daughters, Susan Holbrook of Marlboro, New Hampshire and Roberta Gianfortoni of Brookline, Mass.; her son, Joseph G. Gianfortoni of Richmond; her six grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Gianfortoni. She was born in the Bronx, New York, February 22, 1912. For more than 30 years she taught in the New York City Public Schools. In her retirement she remained active volunteering both at Pine Jog Environmental Educational Center in West Palm Beach for 20 years and at Covered Bridge Condominiums in Lake Worth, Fla. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be sent to Pine Jog Environmental Educations Center, c/o Rita Adamo, Office Manager, 6301 Summit Avenue, West Palm Beach, Fla. 33415.

GILLIAM
Robert L. Gilliam (Bob), 70, of Mechanicsville, (Precious Husband) for 23 1/2 years of Rose L. Gilliam, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, March 25, 2001. He is also survived by two daughters, Deborah Francis and Terrie Mustian and her husband, Bill; one stepson, Steve Minson and his wife, Nancy; and six grandchildren. Mr. Gilliam was retired from Pleasants Hardware. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Landmark Baptist Church, Creighton Road, where Mr. Gilliam faithfully served The Lord for over 27 years. Services will be held at Landmark Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27, with burial in Washington Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Landmark Baptist Church Building Fund, 4000 Creighton Road, Richmond, Va. 23223. Nelsen Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

HAIDY

HUNTER
Patria Ruth Pangborn Hunter, 69, of Richmond, died Saturday, March 24, 2001. Survivors include two children, Cinda Hunter Polley and Steven Lyndon Hunter; a former husband, Robert Eldon Hunter. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, and where a funeral service will be held 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Interment Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 2601 Hermitage Rd., Richmond, Va. 23220.

JANSEN
Peter B. Jansen, 68, of Richmond, died March 23, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia C. Jansen; daughters, Lisa Smith, Lynn Domer and Lauri Fincham; sisters, Inga Dumala, Charlotte Glover and Marieanne Hillenbrand; brothers, John and Bernhard Jansen; seven grandchildren. His remains rest at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). Graveside funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 334, Colonial Heights, Va. 23834.

JOHNSON
Cora Lee Johnson, of 6252 Debora Drive, departed this life March 21, 2001. She is survived by a brother, Carl Johnson; a niece, Elizabeth Steele; four nephews, Nathaniel, Copell, Robert and Frank Johnson; two very devoted great-nieces, Marian Drye and Ellen Blassingame; and a devoted great-nephew, Albert Johnson; a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Carlton T. Brooks Funeral Home, 2200 Hull St. Graveside services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery on Tuesday, 12 Noon. Elder Rodney Rowell officiating. Family and friends attending services, please assemble at 11:15 a.m. at the funeral home.
