ABINGDON -- Mrs. Shirley Ruth Price Hurd, 59, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, in Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol, Tennessee.
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, attended Highland's Chapel and was a former employee of Bonnie's Restaurant, Bristol, Va.
Survivors include her husband, Mack Hurd; two sons, Raymond L. Hurd, and Mack Hurd Jr., both of Abingdon; three brothers, Jimmy Price, Billy Price and Allen Price, all of Abingdon; six sisters, Zola Price, Eileen Norris, Donna Henry and Peggy Wright, all of Abingdon, Gracie Merritt, Bristol, Tennessee, and Bonnie Jones, Bristol, Virginia; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Ruth E. Jackson
APPALACHIA -- Ruth Elizabeth Mumpower Jackson, 79, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, at her home.
She was the widow of William Curtis Jackson Sr., a member of Appalachia United Methodist Church, past president of United Methodist Women, a member of Circle 1, holding office of Sunshine & Courtesy for over 50 years, and a local officer with Resources for United Methodist Women's Organization.
She was a member for 50 years and past president of American Legion Auxiliary Post 70, Appalachia, where she coordinated the yearly Poppy Drive for Veterans of Foreign Wars, sponsored Girls State Representative through the American Legion Auxiliary each year through Appalachian High School and was a member of Rebekah Assembly of Virginia Lodge 73 of the Odd Fellows, Appalachia.
She was past member of local chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, a pink lady volunteer for Lonesome Pine Hospital Auxiliary and received a service award pin for required number of hours of volunteering.
She was a member and past president of Appalachia Band Boosters Organization, a member of PTA for several years, was a licensed practical nurse with duties in St. Mary's Hospital, Norton, did substitute teaching for Appalachian Elementary and high schools, performed duties as a library assistant in Lonesome Pine Regional Library, Big Stone Gap, under the
Green Thumb Program.
While with
Green Thumb Program, she volunteered for delivery of Meals on Wheels for surrounding communities and was office clerical assistant for Developmental Services, Inc., Big Stone Gap.
Survivors include two daughters, Faye Evelyn Jackson Leblanc, Appalachia, and Barbara Sue Jackson Walters, Gray, Tenn.; three sons, William Curtis Jackson Jr., Big Stone Gap, Robert Eugene Jackson, Matthews, N.C., and Bryan Monroe Jackson, Charlotte, N.C.; four brothers, Gordon Mumpower, Big Stone Gap, Frank Mumpower and Richard Mumpower, both of Chattanooga, and Larry Mumpower, Spartanburg, S.C.; three sisters, Iris Draper, Bristol, Virginia, Bernice Young, Andover, Va., and Douglas Laster, Jonesboro, Ga.; two granddaughters; one grandson; two great-grandsons; an expected great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret A. Johnson
Margaret Alexander Johnson, 76, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, in Bristol, Virginia.
She was a native of Statesville, N.C., and had lived in Bristol, Tennessee, since 1949.
She was a graduate of Women's College of the University of North Carolina (now UNCG), taught in elementary schools in Sullivan County and Bristol, Tennessee, earned her master's degree in library science from East Tennessee State University and served as a librarian in the Sullivan County School System, retiring in 1982.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Border Guild//Junior League of Bristol.
Survivors include her husband, J. Paul Johnson; one daughter, Mrs. Tom (Margaret "Mollie") Brown, Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, Fred L. Johnson, Apex, N.C., and David P. Johnson, Slidell, La.; one sister, Katherine Whiteside, Rock Hill, S.C.; one brother, Fred Alexander, Raleigh, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

Chester Maggard
NORTON -- Chester Maggard, 71, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, in University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville.
He was a former resident of Burdine, Ky., and Kingsport, and had most recently made his home in Bean Station, Tenn.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, a former member of Jenkins Masonic Lodge, Jenkins, Ky., and American Legion, Kingsport.
He was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include his wife, Germaine Maggard; four daughters, Lana Lucas and Debbie Lawson, both of Orlando, Fla., Brenda Fleming, Burdine, and Sandy Johnson, Cleveland, Tenn.; two sons, Larry Maggard, Pikeville, Ky., and Chester Maggard Jr., Tunnel Hill, Ga.; four sisters, Bonnie Walters, Waynesboro, Pa., Mary Goolsby, Andover, Va., Vivian Boykins, Apache Junction, Ariz., and Linda Robinson, Norton; one brother, Clyde Maggard, McRoberts, Ky.; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Beecher F. McCroskey
ABINGDON -- Beecher F. McCroskey, 78, of 15600 Porterfield Highway, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at his home.
He was a native of Greendale Community and a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va.
He was a retired tobacco inspector for the United States Department of Agriculture and was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Sheila McCroskey Boyd, Abingdon; one son, John E. McCroskey, Abingdon; one sister, Ruby Black, Richmond; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mattie V. Odum
ABINGDON -- Mattie V. Odum, 88, of 356 Clark Street, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at her home.
She was a lifelong Abingdon resident, a retired employee with Abingdon Harwood Manufacturing, and an Avon representative for over 40 years.
She was a member of First Church of God and the widow of Gilbert Odum.
Survivors include one sister, Sarah Rachel Reynolds, Abingdon; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mattie P. Pryor
KNOXVILLE -- Mattie Brooks Priestley Pryor, 99, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at her home.
She was a native of Sharon, Tenn., a graduate of Sharon High School in 1917, and moved to Knoxville in 1941.
She was a member of Laurel Church of Christ since 1941, where she was employed as secretary from 1955 to 1968.
She taught piano lessons in her home for many years and was the widow of James Edward Pryor.
Survivors include three daughters, Martha Roberts, Sharon, Ruth Weaver, Titusville, Fla., and Rose Arrants, Blountville; two sons, William Pryor, Knoxville, and Donald Pryor, Huntsville, Ala.; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held Saturday in Knoxville, with burial Monday in Sharon.

Gerald C. Purcell
KENNESAW, Ga. -- Gerald C. Purcell, 72, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997.
He was a native of Wilder, Va., had lived in Georgia since 1965, and retired from the Air Force after 23 years, having served during the Korean War. He retired from The EPA as an environmental technician with 20 years of service.
Survivors include one son, Aaron Jay Purcell, Acworth, Ga.; two daughters, Donna Westmoreland, Marietta, Ga., and Diana Reavis, Kennesaw, Ga.; one sister, Nancy Loraine Anders, Marion; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial will be held Friday in Kennesaw, Ga.

Nannie B. Rasnick
NORA -- Nannie Bell Rasnick, 96, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, in Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Clintwood.
She was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Stella M. Rosenbalm
Stella Mae Rosenbalm, 51, of 316 Bear Hollow Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, in Sycamore Shoals Hospital, Elizabethton.
She was a native of Abingdon, had lived most of her life in the Bristol area, was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Franklin Eugene Pickle, Bristol, Tennessee; two sisters, Anna Marie Morgan and Nellie Smathers, both of Bristol, Tennessee; two brothers, Danny Dunn, Bristol, Virginia, and Wade Dunn, Bristol, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.
