David Smith

ROGERSVILLE -- David Smith, 55, of Holston Terrace Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, in Lakeway Regional Hospital, Morristown.
He was retired from Virginia National Guard, was a veteran of Desert Storm and a member of American Legion Hammond Post 21, Rogersville.
He was employed with First Tennessee Human Resource Agency.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Smith; one daughter, Sherry Call, Saltville; one son, David Wayne Smith, Florida; his parents, Tivis and Ruth Smith, Saltville; two sisters, Merilyn Armstrong, Radford, and Mildred Surber, Saltville; four brothers, Don Smith, Kingsport, Ed Smith, Matthews, N.C., Earl Smith, Wytheville, and Howard Smith, Johnson City; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday in Rogersville with burial Thursday in Glade Spring.
Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, is in charge.

Jean C. Thompson

GREER, S.C. -- Jean Cumbow Thompson, 59, of 103 Mockingbird Lane, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at her home.
She was a native of Abingdon and had received a B.S. degree from Eastern Illinois University.
She held a RN degree from Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, and also was a member of Northeast Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband, William D. Thompson; two daughters, Tamra L. Toussaint, Gaithersburg, Md., and Angela R. Thompson, Greenville; one son, Darrell W. Thompson, Greer; two brothers, J.W. Cumbow, Rural Retreat, and Ronald Cumbow, Atkins, Va.; three sisters, Pauline Holmes, Abingdon, Alice Cumbow, Bristol, Virginia, and Dorothy ReMine, Roanoke.
Funeral services will be held Thursday in Greer, S.C.
Memorials may be made to the Greenville Co. Cancer Society, 113 Mills Ave., Greenville, SC 29605.
The Wood Mortuary Inc. is in charge.

Artie E. Wright

POUND -- Artie Evelyn Wright, 81, of 11104 Boggs Hollow Road, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at her home.
She was a lifelong resident of Pound and a member of Pound First Baptist Church.
She attended Christopher Gist High School, where she was a member of the girls varsity basketball team, and was the widow of Charlie Wright.
She was employed with various restaurants, The Patio, Wrights and The Jerky.
Survivors include one son, John Ed Wright, Pound; two daughters, Bobbie Mullins, Coeburn, and Peggy Fleming, Clintwood; two foster daughters, Lori Evelyn Wright, Pound, and Patricia Lynn Wright Holmes, Easley, S.C.; one sister, Flora Mooney, Clintwood; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mullins Funeral Home, Clintwood, is in charge.

Jack P. Barker

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. -- Jack Porter Barker, 86, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998 at home.
He was a native of Bristol, Tennessee and graduated from King College in 1936.
He spent his summers working at Ward Manor, a camp for underprivileged children in Duchess County, N.Y., and later worked at the Department of Agriculture, Washington, D.C.
He served with the Army Air Corps 162nd Bomb Squad, which was based at Watton, Alconbury and Raydon, England, during World War II.
After the war he began his teaching career at the Landon School for Boys, Bethesda, Md., where he taught fifth grade and coached football for 20 years.
He also founded and ran the Inverness Camp for Boys and later founded and directed the Inverness Montessori School, Potomac, Md.
He purchased the Country Inn, Berkely Springs, and served as innkeeper.
He also obtained his pilot's license in the 1960s.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Adele Jackson.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Barker; one daughter, Adele Marie Barker; and one grandson, Noah Barker, Tucson, Ariz.

Herby Burnette

Herby Burnette, of Bristol, Virginia, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Bristol and a graduate of Bristol, Virginia High School, where he was named an All-American in football.
He also attended Clemson University and later played professional baseball.
He was employed by Mason-Dixon Lines for 22 years and Superior Carriers for 15 years. He also served Superior Carriers as vice president of the Southern Region.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jean G. Burnette; two daughters, Kim Burnette, Knoxville, and Lisa Burnette, Bristol, Virginia; his mother, Dorothy Forbush, Bristol, Virginia; and one granddaughter.
Oakley-Cook Funeral Home is in charge.

Edith A. Doane

BLOUNTVILLE -- Mrs. Edith Pet Akard Doane, 95, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, in Wellmont-Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Blountville where she was retired from the Sullivan County School System.
She was a former member of Centenary United Methodist Church where she taught adult Sunday school. She was a song leader and organist and was active in many other activities of the church.
She was a member of Wheeler United Methodist Church and was the widow of E.C. "Gene" Doane.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Roy R. (Edith) Faulkner, Abingdon, Mrs. John (Betty) McCray, Greenwood, S.C., Mrs. Maude Thompson, Bristol, Virginia, Mrs. Harold (Polly) Wagner and Mrs. Ray (Patsy) Baker, both of Blountville; two sons, Eugene Cassidy Doane Jr., Blountville and Walter Glen Doane Sr., Bristol, Tennessee; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Blountville Funeral Home is in charge.

Hallie G. Hart

MARION -- Hallie Othella Grubb Hart, 86, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, in Abingdon Manor Rest Home, Abingdon.
She was a native of Grant, Va., and was the widow of her first husband, Claude E. Hart; and her second husband, Greenville Brewer.
Survivors include three daughters, Lavern Caldwell, Delephine Hart and Crystal Zimmerman; five sons, Joseph Hart, David Ray Brewer, George Roy Brewer, James Lawrence Brewer and Billy Joseph Brewer; one sister, Texas Cornett, Marion; 20 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Barnett's Funeral Home, Marion, is in charge.

Stan Hash

GATE CITY -- Stan Hash, 60, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center.
He was a member of Higher Ground Baptist Church, Kingsport.
He was an umpire for minor league and little league baseball teams for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Holly Bonnin Hash; one daughter, Staff Sgt. Denisa Darlene Robinson, U.S. Air Force, Fort Gordon, Ga.; five sons, Stanley "Buddy" Hash Jr. and Kyle "Beaver" Hash, both of Covington, Ga., Darrell Hash, Gate City, Stanley "Butch" Hash and Chad Hash, West Palm Beach, Fla.; two step-sons, Chris Abston and Justin Abston, both of Gate City; one step-daughter, Lizzy Abston, Gate City; his mother, Virginia Wilson Hash, Marion; one sister, Loretta Hash Drake, Jonesville, Va.; three brothers, Lee Hash, Culpeper, Va., Jim Hash, Marion, and Morris Hash, Cocoa, Fla; nine grandchildren; and two aunts.
Seaver- Brown Funeral Service is in charge.

Irene F. Hawkins

LEESBURG, Va. -- Irene F. Hawkins, formerly of Clintwood, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, in the Medical College of Virginia.
She was a member of Clintwood Bible Church and was the widow of Fred Hawkins.
Survivors include her mother, Margaret Klosowski, Aston, Pa.; one son, Martin Hawkins, Blacksburg; two daughters, Jessie Hayes, Clintwood, and Belinda Stanley, Leesburg; three sisters, Judith DiMeglio, Newcastle, Del., Margaret Rowles, Aston, and Constance Paul, Woodbine, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
Clintwood Funeral Home, Clintwood, is in charge.
