Richard S. Harley

Richard S. Harley, 87, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a member of Clear Branch United Methodist Church.
He was a dairy farmer, a fisherman and was preceded in death by his wife, Daisy Harley.
Survivors include one son, Donald S. Harley, Bristol, Virginia; one sister, Ernestine H. Jessee, Bristol, Virginia; four grandchildren, Darrell Harley, Montey Harley, Rhonda Harley and Donna Harley; four great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge.

Elsdon B. Heron

Elsdon Boyd Heron, 80, of 211 Hemlock Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at his home.
He was a native of Pittsburgh and a resident of Bristol since 1955.
He was a veteran of World War II, and spent most of his working career tuning pianos.
During the past 30 years, he had spent most of his time pursuing his avid interest in creating hybrid Aesclepias flowers.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Oyler Heron; one daughter, Janet Poley, Roswell, Ga.; three sons, William Heron, Charlotte, N.C.; James Heron, Augusta, Ga., and Dale Heron, Framingham, Mass; one sister, Harriet Pauley, Tallahassee, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
Akard Funeral Home is in charge.

Eugene S. Holden

Eugene S. Holden, 79, of 174 Valley Pike Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II earning a Good Conduct Medal, an AP Theater Ribbon, One Bronze Service Star, American Theater Ribbon and a World War II Victory Ribbon.
He was a retired employee of H.P. King Furniture Company and a member of Paperville Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Carrier Holden; one son, Wayne Holden, Bristol, Tennessee; one brother, Charlie Holden, Bristol, Tennessee; two grandchildren, Shannon Holden Gregory, Glade Spring, and David Wayne Holden, Roanoke; and two great-grandchildren.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

Samantha M. Hood

EAST STONE GAP -- Samantha Mae (Hughes) Hood, 78, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at the home of her daughter, Mary L. Cobb, Duffield.
She was a native of Wise County, was converted at an early age and was a lifetime member of East Stone Gap Baptist Church.
She was the widow of Judge Hood.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Mary L. Cobb, Duffield, Mrs. Patricia A. Colvard, Mrs. Velma J. Brobrosky, Mrs. Rebecca A. Robinson and Mrs. Catherine L. Esteppe, all of East Stone Gap; one sister, Mrs. Eura Duncan, Sullivan Gardens, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Holding Funeral Home,Big Stone Gap, is in charge.

James D. Hughes

James D. "Doug" Hughes, 73, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Abingdon, had lived most of his life in Bristol, and was a member of Fellowship Chapel Church.
He was a civil service employee with the Department of the Army retiring after 35 years of service, and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Evelyne Roberts Hughes; two sons, Kenneth E. Hughes, Bristol, Virginia, and James D. Hughes Jr., Knoxville; three brothers, E.T. Hughes, Blountville, John Paul Hughes, Jonesville, and Tony L. Hughes, Abingdon; one sister, Mrs. Jean H. Bain, Dowington, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge.

Bernice I. Isaacs

ROAN MOUNTAIN -- Bernice I. Isaacs, 65, of 211 Willow Street, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, along with her husband, Rex Isaacs, as a result of the flood.
She was a native of Carter County and a member of High Point Baptist Church.
She was a retired employee of Baxter Pharmaceutical, Marion, N.C.
Survivors include one son, Donnie Isaacs, Hampton; two daughters, Joyce Denton and Pamela Whisenhunt, both of Roan Mountain; three brothers, Claude and Gurn Andrews, both of Butler, and Ernest Andrews, Elizabethton; four sisters, Mabel Hardin, Edith Phillips and Lois Whisnant, all of Elizabethton, and Ruth Andrews, Butler; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Tetrick Funeral Home, Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain, is in charge.

Rex Isaacs

ROAN MOUNTAIN - Rex Isaacs, 73, of 211 Willow Street, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, along with his wife, Bernice Isaacs, as the result of the flood.
He was a native of Carter County and a member of High Point Baptist Church.
He was a retired employee of Henredon Furniture Company, Spruce Pine, N.C., and an Army veteran.
Survivors include one son, Donnie Isaacs, Hampton; two daughters, Joyce Denton and Pamela Whisenhunt, both of Roan Mountain; two sisters, Louise Born, Newland, N.C., and Blanche Waycaster, Adrian, Mich.; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Tetrick Funeral Home, Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain, is in charge.

Landon Justus

BUCHANAN COUNTY -- Landon Justus, 66, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, in Buchanan General Hospital.
He was a native of Buchanan County, a lifelong resident living in the Home Creek area of Buchanan County until he became a resident of Heritage Hall, Grundy.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sisters, Pinkie Stiltner, Grundy, and Patadora Hedrick, Elicott City, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home, Grundy, is in charge.

Pauline E. Kilgore

BIG STONE GAP -- Pauline "Pete" Earley Kilgore, 78, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, in Lonesome Pine Hospital.
She was a native of Roda, Va., had lived most of her life in Big Stone Gap, and was the widow of Jack A. Kilgore.
She was a member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 157, Big Stone Gap, a member of Urban Rural Community Development in the l970s, and was involved in civic and community activities.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Cindy) Ashley and Mrs. Donny (Vicki) Neeley; one sister, Carliss Earley; one brother, Ralph Earley; two grandsons; and one nephew.
Holding Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, is in charge.

Barbara H. Lester

CHILHOWIE -- Mrs. Barbara Hazel Lester, 83, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
She was the widow of George Fulton Lester, a member of Middle Fork Baptist Church and a retired Dairy Queen manager.
Survivors include one son, George J. Lester, Piney Flats; one daughter, Mrs. Bill (Shirley) Goodman, Glade Spring; two brothers, Alvin Belcher, Welch, W.Va., and Calvin D. Belcher, Princeton, W.Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Edith Green, Welch, W.Va., and Mrs. Ruth Blevins, Williamson, W.Va.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Williams Funeral Home, Chilhowie, is in charge.
