POUND -- Joe Howard Johnson, 64, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in Wise Appalachian Regional Hospital, Wise.
He was a member of Flat Gap Missionary Baptist Church and a former employee of Pepsi Cola Bottling Company, Norton.
Survivors include his wife, Judea Clasby Johnson; two daughters, Dorothy Taylor, Pound, and Elaine Hylton, Wise; his mother, Elizabeth Reeves Johnson, Coeburn; two brothers, Robert Johnson and Ervin Johnson, both of Coeburn; two sisters, Frances Wiley, Coeburn, and Patsy Pennington, Fair Hope, Ala.; one grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Vernon Kern

BIG STONE GAP -- Vernon Kern, 81, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in St. Mary's Hospital, Norton.
He was a native of Tom's Creek and had spent most of his life in Worth, Ill. He returned to this area after his retirement from Fisher Body. He was in the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He was of the Protestant faith. He retired as a box maker from Fisher Body.
Survivors include his wife, Linda "Addie" Bledsoe Kern; two step-sons, Gary Eldridge, Lockport, Ill. and Charles Ed Lewis, Hometown, Ill.; one daughter, Loretta Marie Joseph, Tinley Park, Ill.; one step-daughter, Edith Baker, Saucier, Miss.; one sister, Goldie Dykes, Norton; three grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; several step-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Gilliam Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, is in charge.

Bud Lundy

POUND, Va. -- Bud Lundy, 78, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in Norton Community Hospital, Norton.
He was of the Freewill Baptist faith and a retired coal miner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cuba Bolling Lundy.
Survivors include three daughters, Janice Moore and Meta Paragon, both of Pound, and Linda Murar, Otter Lake, Mich.; two sisters, Mable Hillman, Jackson, Ky., and Martha Epplinger, Camp Hill, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Baker Funeral Home, Pound, is in charge.

Jesse M. McNabb

Johnson CITY -- Jesse Mae McNabb, 90, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in Johnson City Medical Center.
She was a native of Bradley County, Tenn., and had lived in Johnson City since 1942.
She was a member of First Methodist Church, Johnson City.
Survivors include her husband, Clarence Gordon McNabb; one son, Jack Gordon McNabb, Springfield, Va.; one granddaughter, Susan Hoffman; and one grandson, Brian Gordon McNabb.
Oakley-Cook Funeral Home is in charge.

Eva R. Musick

LEBANON -- Miss Eva Ruth Musick, 82, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in Cedar Lawn Convalescent Home, Abingdon.
She was a lifelong resident of Russell County and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two brothers, Comer Musick and Roy Musick, both of Cleveland, Va.; several nieces and nephews including a special niece, Lois Bailey, Lebanon, with whom she made her home; and several great nieces and nephews.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge.

Mary L. Odell

MEADOWVIEW -- Mrs. Mary Lou Odell, 52, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a native of Mercer County, W.Va., where she had lived until moving to Washington County 30 years ago.
She was a member of Emory United Methodist Church and was employed by Miracle Ear, Abingdon.
Survivors include four daughters, Vicki Odell, Bristol, Tennessee, Lisa Odell and Susan Odell, both of Emory, Va. and Catherine Odell, Abingdon; her mother, Mrs. Nell B. Cravens, Bluefield, Va.; and one sister, Mrs. Steve (Anne) McWilliams, Bluefield.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge.

Kevin L. Parker

Kevin L. Parker, 33, of 1106 Tremont Ave., Bristol, Tenn., died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998.
He was an employee of Richards Automotive, Blountville, a graduate of Tennessee High School and a member of Central Christian Church.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
Survivors include his parents, Bob and Helen Parker, Bristol, Tennessee; two sisters, Karen Mallonee, Spangdahlem Air Force Base, Germany and Kim Worley, Bluff City; and one brother, Keith Parker, Church Hill, Tenn.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

Edna D. Thacker

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- Edna Dungan Thacker, 89, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998.
She was a native of Bristol, Virginia but had lived in California for 35 years. She was a graduate of Virginia High School and attended Sullins College.
She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church. She was a nurse at Fort Shelby Hospital, Bristol Regional Medical Center, and the Desert Hospital in Palm Springs.
Survivors include one daughter, Beverly Hobbs Barbara, Palm Springs; and one sister, Billie Dungan Roberts, Bristol, Virginia.
A graveside service will be held in Mountain View Cemetery in early spring.

Hufford Yates

HAYSI -- Hufford Yates, 83, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, in Buchanan General Hospital.
He was a native of Buchanan County and was a retired self-employed truck driver.
He attended the Old Regular Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Yates; two daughters, Lorene Yates Boyd and Marlene Yates Coleman, both of Haysi; five sons, Harold Yates, Raymond Yates and Elbert Shortridge, all of Haysi, John B. Yates, Tazewell, and Jack Dempsey Yates, Vansant; one step-son, Otis Ratliff, Delaware, Ohio; three brothers, Frenchman Yates, Grundy, Malcolm Yates, Cedar Bluff and Ervin Yates, Haysi; 25 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
Haysi Funeral Home is in charge.

Jilda L. Sproles

ELIZABETHTON -- Jilda Linn Sproles, 41, of 121 Ruby Ave., Lot 14, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, in Pine Ridge Health Care Center, Elizabethton.
She was a native of Carter County, a member of Oak Street Baptist Church and a retired employee of Interstate Graphics.
Survivors include her father, Tommy Sproles, Elizabethton; her mother, Deanna Pierce Sproles Wiseman, Columbia, S.C.; her stepfather, Hayden Wiseman, Columbia, S.C.; her stepmother, Lynn Sproles, Elizabethton; a brother, Mike Sproles, Elizabethton; a stepsister, Mrs. Jason (Amy) Miller, Elizabethton; three stepbrothers, Jimmy Ensor, Elizabethton, Andrew Wiseman, Jonesborough, and Michael Tasch, Rockford, Ill.; her maternal grandmother, Ruth Pierce, Elizabethton; her paternal grandmother, Edna Sproles, Irmo, S.C.; four step-nieces; two step-nephews, several aunts and uncles; a great-aunt; and several cousins.

Marvin R. Suits

CASTLEWOOD -- Marvin R. Suits, 71, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, in Russell County Medical Center, Lebanon.
He was a native of Russell County, a U.S. Army veteran and a retired employee of Clinchfield Coal Company. He was a member of Assembly of God Church, St. Paul.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy D. Suits; a sister, Violta "Chick" Lovell, Austin, Texas; a brother, Curtis Suits, Bristol Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

John D. Taff Jr.

John Deveres Taff Jr., 89, of Bristol Virginia, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Dandridge, Tenn., had spent most of his life in the Bristol area and was a photographer with the /{Bristol Herald Courier/}.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of the State Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Reba Taff; a son, John Taff III, Bristol Tennessee; and three grandchildren.
Akard Funeral Home is in charge.

Arlie L. Yates

LEBANON -- Arlie Lewis Yates, 60, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, in a Lebanon hospital.
He was a native of Lebanon, had resided in the Corner section of Lebanon all of his life, and was a farmer. He attended Miller's View Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Ann Yates; two sons, Allen Yates, Lebanon, and Ricky Yates, Castlewood; and three grandchildren, Adrienne Yates, Kayla Yates and Nathan Yates.
Honaker Funeral Home is in charge.
