Walter Sells Hurt, 68, of 417 Spurgeon Lane, Bristol, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Bristol, Virginia and attended North Bristol Baptist Church.

Johnson and Carla Walters, both of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Nancy Cross and Margaret Arnold, both of Bristol, Virginia; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

CASTLEWOOD -- Leroy Kiser, 75, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, in Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol, Tennessee.
He was a native of Russell County, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a retired miner and a member of UMWA Local 1256.
He attended Calvary Baptist Church, Castlewood.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Kiser; two daughters, Donna Dickerson and Missy Castle, both of Castlewood; one son, Randall L. Kiser, Cleveland, Va.; one sister, Lillian Holbrook, Castlewood; two brothers, Paul J. Kiser, Hobart, Ind., and James R. Kiser, Cleveland, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

MARION -- Glenn Wade Lawrence, 34, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, in Orlando, Fla.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and a graduate of Shenandoah University.
Survivors include his father, Bob Lawrence, Marion; two brothers, Michael Wayne Lawrence, Norfolk, and Steven Ray Lawrence, Marion; his grandmother, Fannie Lawrence, Chilhowie; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Marcelle G. Melkowski
Marcelle Gilliam Melkowski, 77, of Bristol, Virginia, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, in Wellmont Hospice House.
She was a native of Wise, Va., and had lived in the Bristol area since 1946.
She was a University of Virginia graduate with a degree in nursing and was employed with Dr. Bernard Grigsby, the old Kings Mountain Memorial Hospital and Memorial Hall with 40 years of service.
She was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church and was the widow of John R. Melkowski.
Survivors include four sons, John R. Melkowski III, Chris Melkowski and B. Kim Melkowski, all of Bristol, Virginia and Gregory W. Melkowski, Bristol, Tennessee; two daughters-in-law; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren

Hatfert Rhea
LEBANON -- Hatfert "Pop" Rhea, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at his home.
He was a lifelong resident of Russell County, a retired coal miner from Pittston Coal Co. with 32 years of service and a member of UMWA Local 1256.
He served on the Russell County Park and Recreation Committee for several years.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda M. Rhea and Brenda Sue Snead, both of Richmond; six sons, Mickey Rhea, Dennis Rhea, Robert Rhea and Tony Rhea, all of Lebanon, Allen Rhea, Cleveland, and Darin Rhea, Nashville; one sister, Sylvia Chafin, Frederick, Va.; five brothers, Radfert M. Rhea, John D. Rhea, Billy D. Rhea, Burl H. Rhea and Denver L. Rhea, all of Cleveland, Va.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

TAZEWELL -- Junior Sanders, 69, of Route 3, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, in a Richlands, Va., hospital.
He was a native of Buchanan County and a member of Rowe Free Pentecostal Holiness Church, Rowe.
He was a retired coal miner and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 1509, Oakwood.
Survivors include his wife, Opal Duty Sanders; two daughters, Rita Blankenship, Hansonville, and Patsy Greatorex, Marion; one son, Gary Sanders, Tazewell; five sisters, Gladys Meadows and Agnes Meadows, both of Rowe, Nancy Hodge, Vansant, Jerlene Childress, Bee, and Judy Street, Richlands; five brothers, Fred Sanders, Carl Sanders and Mack Sanders, all of Rowe, Graham Sanders, Cedar Bluff, and Jim Sanders, Manassas; and five grandchildren.

BLUFF CITY -- John Thomas "Jack" Sprucebank Jr., 67, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at his home.
He was a native of Baltimore and had lived in Bluff City for the past eight years.
He was a retired painting contractor.
Survivors include two daughters, Johnna D. Guy, Baltimore, and Terry Sprucebank, Bluff City; one sister, Betty Sowers, Baltimore; and seven grandchildren.

Thelma F. Weaver
ABINGDON -- Mrs. Thelma Faye Weaver, 61, of 27377 April Lane, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., and an employee of Harwood Manufacturing Company for 27 years.
She was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include her husband, Jack P. Weaver; one son, Jack L. Weaver, Bristol, Virginia; one daughter, Mrs. Lynn (Sandy Weaver) Hallman, Mt. Airy, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Amber Hallman, Winston-Salem, N.C., Holly Hallman, Galveston, Texas, and Laura Weaver, Bristol, Virginia.

ASHLAND, Ky. -- Parke Wright, 81, formerly of Tarpon, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, in King's Daughters Medical Center, Ashland.
He was a native of Dickenson County, a retired coal miner and was a member of United Mine Workers of America.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Panama Canal Zone, and was a member of Clintwood Masonic Lodge 66.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Hay Wright; one daughter, Rosemary Colley, Ashland; one sister, Eula Wright Newberry, Greenville, Tenn.; and two granddaughters, Kimberly and Rebecca Colley, both of Ashland.

Dorothy M. Barger
Mrs. Dorothy McQueen Barger, 82, of 646 Dogwood Lane, Bristol, Va., died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998.
She was a graduate of Virginia Interment College, attended Radford University and was a graduate of East Tennessee State University.
She was active as a volunteer in the YWCA, the American Red Cross and was retired as District Director for the Appalachian Girl Scout Council.
She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where she was a member of Women of the Church, a Sunday School teacher, a deacon and an elder.
Survivors include her husband, Howard Barger; two daughters, Betty Barger and Linda Barger, both of Bristol, Tennessee; one sister, Rosamond McQueen Carey, McAlester, Okla.; one brother, John J. McQueen, Tulsa; two nieces; and five nephews.
