Nancy E. Counts

Mrs. Nancy E. "Liz" Counts, 102, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, in Norton Community Hospital.
She was a native of Russell County and had lived in Clintwood for several years before moving to Washington County in 1960.
She was of the Baptist faith and was the widow of Wilson E. Counts.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Miller, Bristol, Virginia, and Mrs. Vivian Asbury, Wise; five grandchildren, Robert Wilson Miller, Robin Cox, Thomas Asbury, Darlis Howard and Judy Bishop; and seven great-grandchildren.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge.

Alma R. Dickson

ERWIN -- Mrs. Alma Robinette Dickson, 79, of 333 Carolina Avenue, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at her home.
She was a native of Wise County, had lived in Erwin most of her life, and in Asheville for 12 years before returning to Erwin in 1980.
She assisted her husband in managing the Plaza Motel, Asheville, before retirement and was of the Baptist faith.
She was the widow of Matt J. Dickson.
Survivors include two brothers, Hansford Robinette, Coeburn, and Landon Robinette, Norton; three sisters, Estelle Robinette, Wise, Effie Brooks, Coeburn, and Fonda Hamm, Indianapolis; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Erwin Memorial Funeral Home, Erwin, is in charge.

Dorthea E. Edmondson

Mrs. Dorthea Ella Graham Edmondson, 77, of 1801 King College Road, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at her home.
She was a homemaker and had lived in the Bristol area since 1965.
She was a member of Virginia Avenue Baptist Church and was the widow of William "Bill" Cole Edmondson.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Ricky "Debbie" Thompson, Bluff City; one son, Dennis L. Edmondson, Bristol, Tennessee; three brothers, Col. Letcher Graham, Richmond, Thurman Graham, Bristol, Tennessee, and Billy Graham, Roanoke; one grandson; and one granddaughter.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

Estel E. Elkins Sr.

COEBURN -- Estel E. Elkins Sr., 82, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, in James H. Quillen Veterans Medical Center, Johnson City, Tenn.
He was a native of Wise County and a resident of North Carolina since his retirement in 1963.
He was a retired U.S. Army Infantry Col., and one of Virginia's most highly decorated combat officers of World War II. While serving as company commander with the 2nd Infantry Division in France and Germany, he earned multiple awards including the Silver Star and the Bronze Star for conspicuous gallantry and the Purple Heart for combat wounds. He received the Combat Infantry Badge for later service with the 3rd Infantry Division during the Korean War. His distinguished military career included a tour as a special advisor to the Shad of Iran, graduation from the Armed Forces Staff and Command College, and other challenging assignments.
After his retirement, he farmed and raised Hereford cattle until his illness.
Survivors include his wife, Polly C. Elkins; two sons, Estel E. Elkins Jr., Anniston, Ala., and Ernest Earl Elkins, Lincolnton, N.C.; six brothers, Aldon "Pete" Elkins, Arvel Elkins, Earl Elkins, Albert Elkins, Claude Elkins and Paul Elkins, all of Coeburn; one sister, Margaret Wilson, Coeburn; one half-sister, Nancy Dalton, Lynchburg; one stepsister, Colleen Bevins, Coeburn; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

David G. Kaylor

ABINGDON -- David Garland Kaylor, 72, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was of the Baptist faith.
He retired from Burlington Mills, Bristol, after 16 years of service, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Sprinkle Kaylor; two sons, David "Butch" Kaylor, Greer, S.C., and Bill Kaylor, Bristol, Tennessee; two daughters, Theresa Bixby, Spain, and Pam Weaver, Simpsonville, S.C.; one brother, Fred Kaylor, Bristol, Tennessee; two sisters, Geneva Dixon, Abingdon, and Mildred Potter, Bluff City; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge.

Lloyd M. Meade

COEBURN -- Lloyd M. Meade, 67, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, in St. Mary's Hospital, Norton.
He was Pastor of Higher Ground Worship Center, Sandy Ridge, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret N. Meade; four sons, Mike Meade and Brent Meade, both of Coeburn, Randy Meade, Abingdon, and Terry Meade, Castlewood; two daughters, Michelle Shelton and Gwen Ward, both of Coeburn; three stepsons, Ronald Dailey, Charlotte, N.C., Wayne Dailey, Kingsport, and James White, Tiffin, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Brenda Ford, Kingsport; one brother, Hassie Meade, Coeburn; two sisters, Ocie Mullins, Virginia Beach, and Georgia Kennedy, Coeburn; 27 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Sturgill Funeral Home, Coeburn, is in charge.

Gladys M. Norton

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Gladys Marie Herndon Norton, 65, of 223B Ross Boulevard, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, in Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
She grew up in Holston Methodist Home and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church where she began attending as a child.
She was an employee of Southern Garment, later known as Greene Manufacturing, and Phillips Consumer Electronics, now G.C. Capital.
Survivors include one daughter, Patricia "Tric" Baughard, Mosheim, Tenn.; one son, Jerry Ray Norton, Greeneville; one sister, Lona Mae Sampson, Kingsport; two brothers, Paul David Herndon, Strawberry Plains, Tenn., and John E. Herndon, Virginia; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday with burial Saturday in Greeneville.
Kiser Funeral Home, Greeneville, is in charge.

Hatfert Rhea

LEBANON -- Hatfert "Pop" Rhea, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at his home.
He was a lifelong resident of Russell County, a retired coal miner from Pittston Coal Co. with 32 years of service and a member of UMWA Local 1256.
He served on the Russell County Park and Recreation Committee for several years.
Survivors include his wife, Sallie Rhea; two daughters, Linda M. Rhea and Brenda Sue Snead, both of Richmond; six sons, Mickey Rhea, Dennis Rhea, Robert Rhea and Tony Rhea, all of Lebanon, Allen Rhea, Cleveland, and Darin Rhea, Nashville; one sister, Sylvia Chafin, Frederick, Va.; five brothers, Radfert M. Rhea, John D. Rhea, Billy D. Rhea, Burl H. Rhea and Denver L. Rhea, all of Cleveland, Va.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Lebanon Funeral Home is in charge.

Ralph P. Robinson

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Ralph P. Robinson, 71, formerly of Swords Creek, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, in a Louisiana hospital.
He was a native of Russell County, a 1944 graduate of Honaker High School and, after being a coal miner in Virginia, graduated from Emory & Henry College in 1955.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church.
He had made his home in Shreveport most of his life, was a former employee of Hycolog, Inc., became one of the founding members of Analytical Logging, Inc., Shreveport, and was listed in the South Edition of "Who's Who" in the early 1970s.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Anne Stillwell Robinson.
Survivors include three sons, Charles E. Robinson and Mark S. Robinson, both of Shreveport, and Steven W. Robinson, Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters, Mrs. Kathleen R. Taylor, Honaker, and Mrs. Blanche R. Wade, Cedar Bluff; one brother, William Robinson, Pounding Mill; and four grandchildren.

LEBANON -- William "Tiny" Robinson, 86, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, in Russell County Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Russell County and a member of AME Zion Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary L. Robinson; two sons, Elijoh Robinson, Lebanon, and William Robinson Jr., Jonesborough, Tenn.; two daughters, Mrs. Nancy Foster, Cleveland, and Mrs. Geraldine Bradshaw, Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Margaret Robinson, Dayton, Ohio; one brother, Ora Robinson, Dayton, Ohio; two half-brothers, James P. Robinson and John Robinson, both of Lebanon; two half-sisters, Clara Story, Cincinnati, and Florence Robinson, Lebanon; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Lebanon Funeral Home is in charge.
