Louise M. Hodge
Louise Manuel Hodge, 86, formerly of Bristol, Virginia, died Jan. 28, 1998.
She was a native of Appalachia, had lived most of her life in the Bristol area, and was a retired employee of L.C. King Manufacturing Company with 27 years of service.
She was of the Baptist faith and was the widow of George F. Hodge.
Survivors include six daughters, Mary Shortt, Abingdon, Hattie Booher, Linda Humphrey and Jean Sage, all of Bristol, Barbara Grubbs, Blountville, and Wanda Gill, Overland Park, Ks.; two sons, George F. "Bud" Hodge Jr., and Maxwell M. "Whacker" Hodge, both of Bristol; 26 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth K. Kendrick
BARTLETT, Tenn. -- Ruth Kinder Kendrick, 80, formerly of Big Rock, Va., died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998.
She was a native of Pike County, Ky. and had lived in Buchanan County several years prior to moving to Bartlett. She was a member of Big Rock Church of Christ and was a homemaker.
She was the widow of Earl Kendrick.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Shirley Pate, Memphis; two sons, Charles Kendrick, Hampton, Va., and Earl Gene Kendrick, Vernon, Mich.; five sisters, Mrs. Mae Saler, Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Edna Thacker and Mrs. Faye Smith, both of Pikeville, Ky., Mrs. Sarah Justice, Sheffield, Ohio, and Lorraine Hall, Nicholasville, Ky.; three brothers, Hobert Kinder and Homer Kinder, both of Pikeville, and Herman Kinder, Carrollton, Ky.; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Ruth E. Myers
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Ruth Ely Myers, 91, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 1998.
She was a native of Lee County, Va., and had lived in Birmingham for several years. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Forestdale Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Cecil Myers, Birmingham, and R.C. Myers, Texas; one sister, Carnie Libesay, Dayton, Ohio; three brothers, Joe Ely, Weber City, Earl Ely and Brownlow Ely, both of Pennington Gap.
Services and burial were held in Forestdale, Ala.

Usley C. Osborne
KINGSPORT -- Usley C. Osborne, of 1816 Idle Hour Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center.
She was a native of Mace Springs, in Scott County, Va., and had lived her adult life in Kingsport.
She was a member of Fort Robinson Baptist Church, the Smithsonian Associates and Liberty Chapter No. 198 of Eastern Star.
She was retired from Tennessee Eastman Company.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert T. Depew and Woodrow Lee Dingus.
Survivors include her husband, Nathan Osborne; three sisters, Bessie Stallard and Jessie Atkins, both of Kingsport, Virginia Castle, Jonesborough, Tenn.; one brother, Worley Clark, Kingsport; a special niece; a special great nephew; four step-children, Phyllis Nottingham, W.N. Osborne Jr. and Howard Osborne, all of Kingsport, Linda Wright, Snellville, Ga.; four step-grandsons; and two step-great-granddaughters.

Michael Palmer
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Michael Palmer, 42, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, in University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington.
He was a native of Kingsport and a resident of Lexington for the past two years.
Survivors include four aunts, Jackie Boyer, Castlewood, Betty Robinette, Wise, Reba Puckett,
Johnson City and Edith Richardson, Lexington; two uncles; and several cousins.

Clyde R. Pannell
BIG STONE GAP -- Clyde Roy "Suds" Pannell, 85, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, in Norton Community Hospital.
He was a native of Bristol, Tennessee and was a 1931 graduate of Big Stone Gap High School, having played football and basketball.
After high school he went to Ohio, where he worked for three years. Upon returning to Big Stone Gap he worked for the Pet Milk Company for five years.
In 1943, "Suds" began working for Old Dominion Power Company, where he worked until his retirement in 1977 as General Maintenance Foreman.
After retirement, he became a building inspector for the Town of Big Stone Gap for one year. He was a volunteer member of the Big Stone Gap Fire Department for 45 years, having served as captain, assistant chief, and finally as chief for four years. He was a charter member and past-president of the Big Stone Gap Lions Club.
He was raised a master mason on the Big Stone Gap Masonic Lodge No. 208, AF&AM in August of 1943 serving as Worshipful Master in 1945. He was appointed to the high positon of District Deputy "Grand Master for the year 1953 by Most Worshipful O.M. Miles. He was treasurer of the lodge for 25 years, also serving as trustee.
He became a member of the Stevenson Royal Arch Chapter No. 19 in 1943, serving as High Priest for 1951, and then as District Deputy Grand High Priest for 1953. He also served as treasurer for Chapter No. 19.
"Suds" was a past Commander of Cyrene Commandery No. 21, member of the Jericho Shrine Temple and was also a past member of Kazim Shrine Temple. He was a member of Appalachia Masonic Lodge No. 229, AM&FM, where Most Worshipful S. Dexter Forbes appointed our Illustrious Brother to the Committee on Work for 1959.
He was the first president of the Big Stone Gap Little League and was instrumental in the formation of Big Stone Gap Youth Football.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Big Stone Gap, having taught Sunday school Survivors include his wife, Louise Worley Pannell; one son, Frank of Melbourne, Fla.; three daughters, Jenny of Melbourne, Susie, of Knoxville and Robin, Big Stone Gap; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Nancy H. Rose
COUNCIL -- Mrs. Nancy Harris Rose, 79, of the Combs Ridge section of Council, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998 in an Abingdon hospital.
She was a native of Venia, Va., and a lifelong resident of the Council area. She was a member of the Free Christian Church, on Big A Mountain.
She was the widow of Melvin C. Rose.
Survivors include four sons, Elbert Rose, Bobby Rose and the Rev. Claude Rose, all of Council, and Millard Rose, Honaker; one daughter, Janice B. Rose Combs, Bluff City; one brother, James Roland Harris, Abingdon; one half-sister, Pearl Stevens, Council; one half-brother, Donald Toby Harris, Christiansburg; ten grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren, two step great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

CLEVELAND, Va. -- Mrs. Mary Virginia Blevins Smith, 84, of the Mill Creek Community died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998 at her home.
She was a lifelong resident of Russell County, and was a member and former clerk of Delphia Primitive Church, Dante.
She was the widow of E.D. Smith.
Survivors include one daughter, Peggy Joyce Blevins, Cleveland; and one sister, Mrs. Dixie Cantrell, Cleveland.

MARION -- James William Stamper, 90, of Cleghorn Valley Road, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a member and deacon of Cleghorn Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Pearl Blevins Stamper; three sons, Jimmy Stamper and Sam Stamper, both of RFD No. 2, Marion, and Bobby Stamper, Burlington, N.C.; one daughter, Carolyn Stamper Martin, Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Victor Stamper and Everette Stamper, both of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Elizabeth Cook and Gladys Jones, both of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Genis Davis, Chilhowie; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
