HURLEY -- Stevie Dean Blankenship, 35, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, in Buchanan General Hospital.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Buchanan County.
Survivors include his father, Nicodemus Blankenship, Grundy; six sisters, Mrs. Linda Light and Mrs. Judy Smith, both of Hurley, Mrs. Wanda Wajdag, Louisa, Va., Mrs. Paula Hackney and Sue Blankenship, both of Grundy, and Michelle Blankenship, Troy, Va.; five brothers, Jerry Blankenship and Bobby Blankenship, both of Hurley, Roger Blankenship, Grundy, Hufford Blankenship, Onley, Md., and Elmer Blankenship, Rockville, Md.

SUGAR GROVE -- Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bullins, 81, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, in Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.
She was the widow of Fields Bullins.
Survivors include two daughters, Thelma Barker, Lansing, W.Va., and Linda Fitzwater, Oak Hill, W.Va.; two sons, Roger Jeffries, Minden, W.Va., and Robert Jeffries, St. Albans, W.Va.; one nephew; and three nieces.

Floyd Byrd
TELFORD -- Floyd Byrd, 92, of 371 Telford-New Victory Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, in Columbia Northside Hospital.
He was a native of Yancey County, N.C., and was retired from Clinchfield Railroad.
He was a member of Lower Brummits Creek Church of the Brethren and also attended Telford United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie Anderson Byrd; five daughters, Jewell
Jones and Anna Lou Chase, both of Jonesborough, Ruby Huffine,
Johnson City, Freida Hunt, Seymour, Tenn., and Gaynelle Wilhoit, Piney Flats; two sons, Garnie Byrd and Bill Byrd, both of
Johnson City; one sister, Vickie Johnson, North Carolina; 11 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Claude E. Counts Sr.
MEADOWVIEW -- Claude Edgar Counts Sr., 93, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
He was a resident of Washington County, Va., until 1979, then resided in Sullivan County at 856 Harrtown Road, Blountville, until June, 1997, when he returned to Meadowview.
He was a member of Hayter's Gap Union Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lakie R. Counts, Blountville;. one son, Claude Edgar Counts Jr., Meadowview; three daughters, Dessaline Surber, Hampton, Va., Opal Kidd, Carthage, Mo., and Zana Davis, Nashville; two stepdaughters, Lillian Taylor and Brenda Taylor, both of Kingsport; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

Claude F. Dowell Sr.
CHILHOWIE -- Claude Franklin Dowell Sr., 76, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Porter Dowell.
Survivors include three daughters, Patsy Jane Hall, Marion, Judy Lin Lambert and Carol Ann Bise, both of Chilhowie; three sons, Claude Franklin Dowell Jr., and Mike Dowell, both of Chilhowie, and Bobby L. Dowell, Saltville; one sister, Ruth Billings, Independence, Va.; one brother, Ray Dowell, Independence; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Ranny C. Duty
HAYSI -- Ranny Clifford Duty, 72, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at his home.
He was a native of Duty, Va., had made his home in Haysi for several years and was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Survivors include two brothers, Bill Duty, Chicago, and Richard "Dickie" Duty, Newberg, Ore.

James L. Edwards
BLOUNTVILLE -- James L. "Junior" Edwards, 46, of 365 Cave Hill Road, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Bristol, Tennessee and was employed with Bristol Ready Mix for 26 years, having served as plant manager for the past 10 years.
He was a member of Riverview Baptist Church, Blountville.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Edwards; one daughter, Stacy Lynn Canter, Blountville; two sons, Jason and Timmy Edwards, both of Blountville; two sisters, Vickey Bailey, Bristol, Virginia, and Brenda Worley, Blountville;. two brothers, Sammy and Ricky Edwards, both of Bristol, Virginia; one grandson; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

BJ Elkins
OAKWOOD -- BJ Elkins, 64, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998 in a Russell County hospital.
He was a native of Buchanan County and was a retired teacher with Buchanan County School System for 34 years.
He was a graduate of Garden High School and received his B.S. Degree from Pikeville College at Pikeville, Ky., and his Masters Degree in Guidance at the University of Virginia.
He was a member of Richlands Masonic Lodge No. 318 AF&AM where he was past master.
He was a member of Tazewell-Russell Shrine Club and a charter member of Oakwood Lions Club.
He was a journeyman sign artist and a Kentucky Colonel at which time he had received several awards and recognitions throughout the years.
Survivors include three sons, Gerald L. "Jerry" Elkins, Marvin, Va., Jeffrey V. Elkins, Bastian, Va., David M. Elkins, Stockbridge, Ga.; his mother, Mrs. Inez McNulty Elkins, Marvin; and two grandsons.

Allen D. Fields
SALTVILLE -- Allen David "Burrhead" Fields, 79, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
He was a veteran of two wars and, while in Europe, received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
He was a member of VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte S. Fields; one son, David "Tony" Fields, Bristol, Virginia; two daughters, Betty F. Salyers, Overland Park, Kan., and Lori F. Foster, Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.

James G. Garrett Jr.
LEBANON -- James Garfield Garrett Jr., 68, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, in Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Russell County and a retiree from C&P Telephone Co. after 40 years of service.
He was a veteran of the Korean War.
He was a Boy Scout leader for over 30 years, receiving the Silver Beaver Award; and was a member of Lebanon Lions Club and Lebanon Fire Department, director of the Bread Box, and a member and trustee of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Snead Garrett; two sons, James Garfield Garrett III, Williamson, W.Va., and William Snead Garrett, Lebanon; one sister, Dorothy Garrett,
Johnson City; one brother, Fred C. Garrett, Lebanon; and four grandchildren.
