John Ray

CEDAR BLUFF -- John "Bud" Ray, 62, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, in a Richlands, Va., hospital.
He was a native of Russell County and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dorothy M. Cole Ray; one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Denise) Cochran, Pounding Mill; his father, Ira C. Ray, Bandy; two sisters, Mrs. Junior (Sylvia) Hall, Baptist Valley, Va., and Mrs. Michael (Dottie) Wing, Cedar Bluff; four brothers, Franklin D. Ray, Orlando, Fla., Gerald E. Ray, Swords Creek, Jim Ray and Jeffrey D. Ray, both of Cedar Bluff; and two grandchildren.
Singleton Funeral Service, Cedar Bluff, is in charge.

Gene R. Rinehart

JONESBOROUGH -- Gene R. Rinehart, 61, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was a native of Whitley, W.Va., and had resided in the Tri-Cities area for the past 40 years.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of VFW Post 3382.
He retired from Eastman Chemical Company after 33 years of service and was most currently employed as a maintenance supervisor with Bristol Metals.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa Rinehart; one daughter, Mrs. Jim (Tina) Hagie, Kingsport; three sons, Mark Rinehart, Hacketstown, N.J., Dallas Rinehart, Kingsport, and Jared Rinehart, of the home; one sister, Luella Meador, Daniels W.Va.; five grandchildren; one niece; and one nephew.
Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport, is in charge.

Carl Wade

SHORTT GAP, Va. -- Carl Wade, 86, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, in a Russell County Hospital.
He was a native of Buchanan County, a lifelong resident of Shortt Gap and attended Fork Ridge Church.
He was a retired coal miner and was preceded in death by his wife, Hettie Eliza Webb.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Beacher (Gaylene) Deskins, Claypool Hill; one son, Emmanuel Wade, Blountville; four sisters, Mrs. Gladys Boyd, Cedar Bluff, Mrs. Stella Gillespie, Richlands, Mrs. Eunice Baldwin, Doran, and Mrs. Vinnie Newberry, Newport News, Va.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Singleton Funeral Service, Cedar Bluff, is in charge.

Jane A. Widner

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Jane Ann Widner, 43, of Green Valley Developmental Center, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, in Laughlin Memorial Hospital, Greeneville.
She was a resident of Green Valley Developmental Center, Greeneville, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her mother, Shirley Otey, Bristol, Tennessee; two sisters, Carolyn Whitaker, Bristol, Virginia, and Kathy Otey, Green Valley Developmental Center, Greeneville; three brothers, Carl Otey Jr., Bristol, Tennessee, Freddie Otey, Damascus, and Danny Otey, Bristol, Virginia; three nephews; and one niece.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

Emogene B. Yates

POUND -- Emogene Branham Yates, 77, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, in St. Mary's Hospital, Norton.
She was of the Baptist faith and the widow of Ivy Yates.
Survivors include five daughters, Debra Perrigan, Gayle Boggs, Carolyn Boggs, Sharon Bolling and Saundra Stidham, all of Pound; two sisters, Jo Stewart, Wise, and Thelma Hubbard, Pound; two brothers, E.G. Branham, Pound, and Harold Branham, Baltimore; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Baker Funeral Home, Pound, is in charge.

Elsie B. Abercrombie

Elsie Watson Bailey Abercrombie, 74, of Bristol, Tennessee, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at her home.
She was a native of the Wallace Community of Bristol, Virginia and was a graduate of Wallace High School and Virginia Intermont College. She was a former bookkeeper with J. Walter Wright Lumber Company.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and The Women of the Church. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Bristol Heart Association and The Hobby Club.
She was the widow of her first husband, O.G. Bailey III.
Survivors include her husband, Milton B. Abercrombie; two daughters, Anna Bailey Michael, Lexington, N.C., and Barbara Bailey, Bristol, Tennessee; one brother, Charles L. Watson, Bristol, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.
Oakley-Cook Funeral Home is in charge.

John K. Collins

SALTVILLE -- John Kenneth "Ken" Collins, 63, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at the home of his sister in Saltville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue, and was in the Merchant Marine for nine years.
Survivors include one son, Wayne Collins, Saltville; his mother, Mabel Collins, Saltville; three brothers, James E. Collins, Lexington, S.C., Thomas H. Collins and Billy D. Collins, both of Saltville; three sisters, Helen Smith, Mansfield, Ohio, Loretta Bise and Patsy McCormick, both of Saltville; one grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
D.R. Henderson Funeral Home, Saltville, is in charge.

Vivian L. Daniels

GRUNDY -- Vivian Lee Daniels, 55, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in Buchanan General Hospital.
She was a native of Buchanan County, attended the Presbyterian church and was formerly employed in nursing homes.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Daniels Jr., New York City, N.Y.; and two aunts, Jewell Matney, Grundy, and Jester Mooney, Paw Paw, Ky.
Grundy Funeral Home is in charge.

Ollie M. Gillespie

TAZEWELL -- Miss Ollie Mahood Gillespie, 93, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in a Tazewell, Va., hospital.
She had resided in Heritage Hall, Tazewell, since April, 1994, was a resident of Tazewell since 1922, moving there from Gillespie, a stop on the N and W Railway between Maxwell and Pounding Mill.
She graduated from Tazewell High School, entered State Normal School for Women, now Longwood College, in 1923, and was awarded a bachelor of science degree in English with a minor in history in 1927.
She taught school briefly in the public schools of Pennsylvania and returned to Tazewell, where she was employed as secretary to James W. Harman. She became Clerk of Trial Justice Court for Tazewell County, now General District Court, where she remained until her retirement several years ago.
She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church.

Roger C. Haga

WHITETOP, Va. -- The Rev. Roger Carl Haga, 71, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax.
Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, is in charge.

Jennie M. Jackson

CHILHOWIE -- Mrs. Jennie Mae Jackson, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.
She was a member of First Christian Church, Allison Gap, a member of Christian Women's Fellowship, Saltville Senior Citizens and was the widow of Charles Edward Jackson.
Survivors include one daughter, Eleanor Chapman, Chilhowie; one brother, Bill Montgomery, Saltville; three sisters, Kate Dunivant, Belle Air, Md., Jackie Nutter, Glade Spring, and Opal McElraft, Saltville; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
