Grover C. Hays
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Grover C. Hays, 71, formerly of Raven and Richlands, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at his home.
He was a native of Bristol, Tennessee, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lowe Hays.
Survivors include two sons, Ronnie D. Hays and Ricky L. Hays, both of Cleveland, Ohio; one daughter, Mrs. Brenda L. Williams, Cleveland, Ohio; two brothers, Denny Hays, Richlands, and Billy Hays, Tazewell; and two sisters, Beulah K. Nipper, Texas, and Glenna Johnson, Honaker.
Singleton Funeral Service, Cedar Bluff, is in charge.

Matilda O. Hinkle
RICHLANDS -- Mrs. Matilda Okie Hinkle, 85, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in a Richlands, Va., hospital.
She was a native of Fort Gay, W.Va., had lived in the Richlands area for the past 43 years and was of the Holiness faith.
She was the widow of Cecil "Blue" Hinkle.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. John (Alma) Bragg and Mrs. Janet Christian, both of Newark, Del., and Mrs. Joyce Johnson, Richlands; three sons, Hubert Hinkle, Monroeville, Ohio, Carl Hinkle, Sulfolk, Va., and Larry Hinkle, of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Zena Tolliver, Jewell Ridge, Mrs. Mae Frazier and Miss Myrtle Perry, both of Fort Gay, W.Va.; two brothers, Herbert Perry, Xenia, Ohio, and Walter Perry, Fort Gay, W.Va.; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Hurst-Scott Funeral Home, Richlands, is in charge.

Fern Lester
DAVENPORT -- Fern Lester, 62, of HC-4, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, at her home.
She was a native of Dickenson County and a member of Indian Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Eivens Lester; one son, Eivens Lester Jr., Bee, Va.; four grandchildren, Melissa Lester, Jacob Lester, Sarah Lester and Will Lester; and several nieces and nephews.
Haysi Funeral Home is in charge.

Sarah L. Neece
DANTE -- Sarah Louise "Lou" Neece, 75, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, in Russell County Medical Center, Lebanon.
She was a native of Dickenson County, was of the Baptist faith and was the widow of Perry Neece.
Survivors include one daughter, Ruth Neece, Dante; two sisters, Omie Mullins, St. Paul, and Minnie Turner, Johnson City; one brother, Curt Phillips, St. Paul; and several nieces and nephews.
Castlewood Funeral Home is in charge.

Alpha E. Phillips
CLINTWOOD -- Alpha Elizabeth "Lizzie" Phillips, 85, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, in Norton Community Hospital.
She was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County, residing in the Phillips Hollow section of the county.
She was a member of Martins Chapel Freewill Baptist Church and the widow of John S. Phillips.
Survivors include three sons, Fred Phillips, Big Stone Gap, Darrell Phillips and Joe Phillips, both of Dante; five daughters, Frances Stallard, Huron, Ohio, Edna Jenkins and Janice Martin, both of Dante, Eula Stanley, St. Paul, and Beuna Vanover, Clintwood; one sister, Ellen Leftwich, Buffalo, Va.; 30 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and three nieces.
Clintwood Funeral Home is in charge.

Jeanette Powers
FAIRFAX -- Jeanette Powers, 67, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in Fairfax Hospital.
She was a native of Wise County and had lived in Northern Virginia since 1952.
She was a retired nursing assistant employed with Leewood Nursing Home.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Powers and Jeffery A. Powers, both of Annandale, Va.; two sisters, June Bevans, Woodbridge, Va., and Mae Mullins, Darwin, Va.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Clintwood Funeral Home is in charge.

L. Bonsall Sykes
ABINGDON -- L. Bonsall Sykes, 77, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Dickenson County, had lived in Washington County for 13 years and was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church.
He attended Hiwassee College and Clinch Valley College and was a former school teacher.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy Fighting Sea Bees in the South Pacific. He received the Pacific Theater of Operations Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was president and owner of Bonnette Inc. Clothing Store, Clintwood, for 39 years and was one of the founders of Virginia Citizen's Bank, Clintwood.
He was a former member of the Virginia House of Delegates and Committee Clerk for the Virginia State Senate.
Mr. Sykes was past vice-chairman of the Board of Governors of Hiwassee College, a member of Abingdon Kiwanis Club, Abingdon Masonic Lodge 48, Clintwood Lodge 66, and a member of Kazim Shriners and Eastern Star.
He served on the governing board of Emory & Henry College, Tennessee Wesleyan College and Hiwassee College.
Survivors include his wife, Annette Stanley Sykes; two brothers, H. Clair Sykes, Roanoke, and Alton G. Sykes, Melbourne, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. J.L. "Jack" (Anita) Anderson, Roanoke, Mrs. C.G. (Carol) Mays, Halifax, Va., and Mrs. Kenneth (Rita) Bailey, Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge. Arrangements are incomplete.

Viola D. Testerman
SUGAR GROVE -- Viola Dunford Testerman, 67, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She attended the Church of God of Prophecy, Sugar Grove, and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, R.B. Testerman Sr.; one daughter, Dorothy T. Caldwell, Chilhowie; one son, Ron B. Testerman Jr., Sugar Grove; four sisters, Ruthie Parks, Sugar Grove, Janette Parks and Ina Graham, both of Troutdale, and Elsie Hutton, Chilhowie; one brother, Charles Arnold Dunford, Front Royal, Va.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Seaver- Brown Funeral Service, Marion, is in charge.

Barbara C. Wood
Barbara Condit Wood, 64, of 207 Big Valley Drive, Bristol, Tenn., died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a native of East Orange, N.J., had lived in Bristol since 1962, was a member of Vance Bible Church and attended Parkway Baptist Worship Center.
She was church secretary for Central Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Wilton R. Wood; two sons, Timothy R. "Tim" Wood and Stephen R. Wood, both of Bristol, Tennessee; one sister, Lois Setzer, Fort Collins, Col.; two brothers, David Condit, Millington, N.J., and Pastor Gordon Condit, Hernando, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

Gregory S. Alexander
Johnson CITY -- Gregory Scot Alexander, 36, of 103 Halfway Court, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Spartanburg, S.C., and had lived most of his life in the Tri-Cities area.
He received a bachelor's degree in Communications from East Tennessee State University. He was the assistant manager of the South Roan Street Revco Drug Store, Johnson City and was a member of Jonesborough United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Victoria Allen Alexander; two daughters, Jessica Lynne Alexander and Jennette Leigh Alexander, both of the home; one son, Jacob Allen Alexander, of the home; his mother, Freida Prince Alexander, Kingsport; and one brother, David Alexander, Charlotte.
Oakley-Cook Funeral Home is in charge.
