ABINGDON -- Jake Charles "J.C." Wood, 82, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Washington County and had lived in Newport News before moving back to Abingdon in 1987.
He was of the Freewill Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Shelva Jean Wood; three sons, Carter Wood, Birmingham, Ala., Gary Wood, Opelika, Ala., and Charles Allen Wood, Bristol, Tennessee; one daughter, Beverly Leggett, Tallahassee, Fla.; two stepsons, Bobby Lee Moran, Bristol, Fla., and Robert Earl Moran, Bainbridge, Ga.; two step-daughters, Cheryl Ann Moran and Cynthia D. Moran, both of Newport News; one brother, Leonard Wood, Kissimmee, Fla.; two sisters, Lucille McCroskey, Johnson City, and Virginia Deaver, Deland, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Farris Funeral Service is in charge.

Clarence W. Blackwell

MEADOWVIEW -- Clarence William Blackwell, 76, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a retired farmer and a lifelong resident of the Blackwells Chapel community of Washington County.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include two brothers, Ernest Blackwell, Bristol, Virginia, and Roscoe Blackwell, Bristol, Tennessee; four sisters, Lucille Snodgrass, Abingdon, Virgie Crabtree, Meadowview, Mary Martin, Emory, and Geneva "Polly" Hoback, Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge.

Elizabeth T. Blevins

MARION -- Elizabeth "Lizzy" Trivett Blevins, 88, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at her home.
She was the widow of Luther "Eude" Blevins.
Survivors include four daughters, Lois Sexton and Nana Williams, both of Marion, Alcie Gillespie, Detroit, and Lilly Williams, Dade City, Fla.; three sons, Bobby Joe Blevins, Chilhowie, Paul Blevins and Danny Blevins, both of Marion; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
Seaver- Brown Funeral Service, Marion, is in charge.

Lottie D. Castle

CASTLEWOOD -- Lottie Dingus Castle, 82, of Route 2, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
She was a native of Virginia, a homemaker and the widow of Charlie C. Castle.
She was a member of Mills Chapel Church and a member of OES, Nicklesville.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Hoover (Reva) Meade, Thaxton, Va., and Mrs. Ernest (Phyllis) Burton, Jr., Castlewood; one brother, Ernest (Preach) Dingus, Dante; seven grandchildren, Peggy Underwood, Roanoke, Robin Ide, Sellersville, Pa., Bobby Gene Castle, Houston, Fred Castle, Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Donna Hale, Galax, Vonda Burton, Gastonia, N.C., and Ernie Burton, Castlewood; and three great-grandchildren.
Huff-Cook Funeral Home, Castlewood, is in charge.

Audrey Christian

HURLEY -- Audrey Christian, 74, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at her home.
She was a native of Buchanan County, a homemaker and a member of Blackey Church of Christ.
She was the widow of William Christian.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy Childress, Oliver Springs, Tenn.; five sons, Joseph P. Christian Sr., Oakwood, Gene Stanley Christian Sr., Abingdon, William A. Christian Jr., and Benny Harrison Hensley, both of Hurley, and Walter Dean Christian, Sunbright, Tenn.; three sisters, Janice Horn and Bernie Sue Lester, both of Belfast, Va., and Retha Helton, Big Rock; three brothers, Willie Roger Hensley, Belfast, and Robert Ray Hensley and Jack Hensley, both of Hurley; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Virginia Funeral Home, Grundy, is in charge.

James E. Dotson

PAW PAW, Ky. -- James Estil Dotson, 59. died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at his home.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Pike County, Ky., a member of Mill Fork Freewill Baptist Church and a retired coal miner.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Betty Lou Hurley Dotson; four daughters, Barbara Ann Cole, Remona Sharlene Sargent and Eva Gail Dotson, all of Paw Paw, Ky., and Nancy Sargent, Hurley; three sons, Calvin Dotson, Marvin Dotson and James Ray Dotson, all of Paw Paw, Ky.; his mother, Mrs. Hazel Scarberry Dotson, Paw Paw, Ky.; five sisters, Virginia Cantrell, Paw Paw, Ky., Merle Hurley, Okie Jackson, Annie Carol Blankenship and Dolly Sargent, all of Hurley; six brothers, Kermit Dotson, Hurley, Howard Dotson, Jerry Dotson, Danny Dotson, Robert Dotson and Davis Dotson, all of Paw Paw, Ky.; and 23 grandchildren.
Grundy Funeral Home is in charge.

Bobby D. French

SALTVILLE//TANNERSVILLE -- Bobby Dean French, 40, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998.
Survivors include his parents, Gene and Ruby French, Tannersville; one brother, Kenny French, Tannersville; two sisters, Diane Rickman, Tannersville, and Helen Hughes, Saltville; three stepdaughters, Sherry Nutter and Stacy Whitt; two nieces; four nephews; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Ruth W. Garrett

Ruth W. Garrett, 68, of 20 Shadow Grove Circle, Bristol, Va., died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in Johnson City Medical Center.
She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and was retired from Greys Hosiery Mill. She was a member of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, John R. "J.R." Garrett; six sisters, Lucy Steffey, Sallisaw, Okla., Ora Widener and Grey Miller, both of Bristol, Virginia, Frances Blevins and Thelma Taylor, both of Bristol, Tennessee, and Eva Cunningham, Leesburg, Va.; two brothers, Herman Widener, Glade Spring, Va., and Bobby Dean Widener, Damascus, Va., and several nieces and nephews.
Blevins Funeral Home is in charge.

Wayne M. Grant

BLOUNTVILLE -- Wayne M. Grant, 70, of 125 Anderson Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, in Northside Hospital.
He was a native of Agee, in Campbell County, Tenn., had lived in Blountville since 1967, and attended the University of Tennessee.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Signal Corps, and was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Reed Grant.
He was employed with Firestone Tire & Rubber prior to becoming co-founder and co-owner of Grant Tire and Automotive, was a longtime member of the downtown business community and was a member of Blountville United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Melissa G. Lincoln, Richmond; three sons, George W. Grant II, Johnson City, Stephen R. Grant, Blountville, and Charles M. Grant, Los Angeles; and six grandchildren.
Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport, is in charge.

George O. Harr Jr.

CHATTANOOGA -- The Rev. George Oliver Harr Jr., 77, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in a local hospital.
He was a native of Bristol, Tennessee and had lived in Chattanooga since 1985.
He had served with the Holston Conference throughout the Tennessee and Virginia area for over 40 years.
He was former minister of the Jones Memorial United Methodist Church and visiting minister at McFarland United Methodist Church.
He was a graduate of King College, Emory University and the Candler School of Theology.
He held membership with the Rossville Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Harr; one son, the Rev. David Harr, Chattanooga; one daughter, Cheri Harr, Soddy-Daisy; two brothers, William E. Harr, Knoxville, and Robert Harr, Chattanooga; one sister, Janet Langan, Chattanooga; and two grandsons.
Heritage Funeral Home, Chattanooga, is in charge.
