Ernest "Bud" Smallwood, 75, of Bristol, Tennessee, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Bristol and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a retired employee of United Inter-Mountain Telephone with 35 years of service and a member of the Woodman of the World, the American Legion Hacklerwood Post 145 and Bradley Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Skeens Sams Smallwood; one daughter, Jean Bullock, Holly Springs, N.C.; one son, Anthony "Tony" Smallwood, Bristol, Virginia; one stepdaughter, Linda Walker, Bristol, Virginia; three stepsons, George Sams, Beltsville, Md., Charles Sams and James Sams, both of Waldorf, Md.; three sisters, Cleo Smallwood and Mae Lee Slaughter, both of Bristol, Virginia, and Pansy McNutt, Bluff City; two brothers, George Smallwood, Bristol, Tennessee, and Pete Smallwood, Bristol, Virginia; three grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

L. Bonsall Sykes
ABINGDON -- L. Bonsall Sykes, 77, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Dickenson County, had lived in Washington County for 13 years and was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church.
He attended Hiwassee College and Clinch Valley College and was a former schoolteacher.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy Fighting Sea Bees in the South Pacific. He received the Pacific Theater of Operations Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was president and owner of Bonnette Inc. Clothing Store, Clintwood, for 39 years and was one of the founders of Virginia Citizen's Bank, Clintwood.
He was a former member of the Virginia House of Delegates and committee clerk for the Virginia State Senate.
He was past vice chairman of the Board of Governors of Hiwassee College, a member of Abingdon Kiwanis Club, Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48, Clintwood Lodge No. 66, and a member of Kazim Shriners and Eastern Star.
He served on the governing board of Emory & Henry College, Tennessee Wesleyan College and Hiwassee College.
Survivors include his wife, Annette Stanley Sykes; two brothers, H. Clair Sykes, Roanoke, and Alton G. Sykes, Melbourne, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. J.L. "Jack" (Anita) Anderson, Roanoke, Mrs. C.G. (Carol) Mays, Halifax, Va., and Mrs. Kenneth (Rita) Bailey, Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.

William E. Teague
GREENEVILLE -- William E. "Abe" Teague, of 234 Gregory Ave., died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in
Johnson City Medical Center.
He was a retired Southern Railway conductor with 48 years of service.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Men's Bible Class.
He was a member of VFW Post No. 1990, a former member of Nolichuckey and Andrew
Johnson Golf Clubs.
He was a former member of Tennessee Conservation League and former president of the Greene County Hunting and Fishing Club.
He was in the military serving with the 351st Infantry Regiment, 88th Division, during World War II
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Stapleton Teague; one daughter, Lorie Waddell, Greeneville; three sons, William E. Teague III, Greeneville, Joe P. Teague, Tampa, Fla., and Mark Teague, Morristown, Tenn.; one granddaughter; one grandson; four sisters, Doris McCracken,
Johnson City, Katherine Miller, Churchill, Ruth Jennings and Inez Bennett, both of Kingsport; one brother-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and a special sister-in-law.

KNOXVILLE -- Stuart Lansing Watson Sr., formerly of Bristol, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, in East Tennessee Baptist Hospital.
He was a member of New Market Baptist Church and attended Hillcrest United Methodist Church, Knoxville.
He was a veteran of World War II and a former vice-president for development at Carson Newman College and Lincoln Memorial University.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Anna Ruth Watson and Celene Little Watson.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Watson, Bristol, and Kathy Watson Caldwell, Jefferson City; two sons, Stuart L. Watson Jr., Midlothian, Va., and Eric K. Watson, Jefferson City; one brother, Tom Watson, Greensboro, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

ABINGDON -- Inez C. Widner, 83, of Mock Knob Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
She was the widow of Ben H. Widner.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Elmer (Dorothy) Shortt, Abingdon, and Mrs. Joe (Geraldine) Thompson, Bluff City; one sister, Mrs. Nolita Campbell, Bristol, Tennessee; four brothers, Burley Booher, Armond Booher and Lestol Booher, all of Bristol, Virginia and W.C. Booher, Bristol, Tennessee; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

ABINGDON -- Clarence Max Bailes Jr., 70, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Charleston, W.Va., had lived in Widen, W.Va., moving to Abingdon in 1976.
He attended West Virginia University and was a graduate of Augusta military Academy.
He was a former vice-president of Pittston Coal Company, Amigo Smokeless Division, transferred to Sewell Division as vice-president and transferred to Clinchfield Coal Company as president until his retirement.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, and a Mason.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Caroline M. Bailes;. one daughter, Mrs. Candace H. Morgan, St. Paul; one sister, Mrs. Retta Lincicome, Lewisburg, Pa.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one nephew; and one niece.

CASTLEWOOD -- Alva Brown, 96, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, in Russell County Medical Center, Lebanon.
She was a native of Wise County and a resident of Castlewood for the past 20 years.
She was the widow of Scott Brown.
Survivors include three daughters, Martha Austin, Castlewood, Marge Jessee, Elizabethton, and Kathleen Lindgren, Coeburn; two sons, Wiley Brown, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Kent Brown, Castlewood; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

HAYSI -- Anna Lee Burnett, 66, of Centennial Heights, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998.
She was a native of Elkhorn, Ky., the widow of Hoyt Burnett, and of the Freewill Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Lonnie Yates, Birchleaf, and William Henry Yates, Montclair, Va.; two daughters, Vickie Yates and Bessie Edwards, both of Haysi; one sister, Evelyn Daniels, Haysi; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Nannie Collins, 88, of 133 Hilltop Street, Bristol, Tenn., died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a native of Lee County and had lived in Bristol Since 1960.
She was the widow of Wilburn Collins, a member of Avoca Christian Church and Rebekah Lodge of the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins.

KINGSPORT -- Claude Swanson Deel, 74, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, in Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was a native of Dickenson County, had lived in Kingsport for the past 14 years and was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was a retired coal miner and businessman, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Nora Marie Deel; one daughter, Crystal Edwards, Kingsport; one sister, Virgie Compton, Haysi; two half-sisters, Bertha Yates, Bluff City, and Lacey O'Quinn, Birchleaf; three brothers, Trinkle Deel, Gray, Tenn., James Deel, Detroit, and Edwin Burns Deel, DeKalb, Miss.; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

HONAKER -- Mrs. Josia Hess, 87, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, in a Columbia Clinch Valley Hospital, Richlands.
She was a native of English, W.Va., had lived most of her life in the Honaker area, was a member of Gent's Chapel Church and, most recently, attended the Full Gospel House of Prayer, Drill.
She was the widow of Beverly Hess.
Survivors include five daughters, Ethel Mae Lister, Taylors, S.C., Mary Frances Taylor and Evelyn Ruth Hale, both of Honaker, Ruba Lou Fraser, Lebanon, and Gladys Pearl May, Bristol, Virginia; four sons, the Rev. Garland Burke Hess and Charles Edwin Hess, both of Honaker, Curtis Lewis Hell, Bristol, Virginia, and Earl Gene Hess, Gaffney, S.C.; four sisters, Beulah Hess and Irene Marshall, both of Honaker, Ida Hubbard, Powhatan, Va., and Marie Hubbard, Lebanon; one brother, Charles Owens, Weber City; 37 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
