Irma D. Denton
ABINGDON -- Irma Durham Denton, 86, of 628 Hurt Street, Abingdon, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in NHC Health Care, Bristol.
She was the widow of Harry D. Denton and a former elementary school teacher in Washington County School System.
She was a graduate of Milligan College and devoted most of her life to church and charitable work in Abingdon.
She was a native of Giles County, Va., an active member of Abingdon Baptist Church where she taught childrens' Sunday School for 68 years and sang in the Sanctuary Choir for more than 30 years. She was named Director Emeritus of Lebanon Baptist Woman's Missionary Union in 1995, and served as the organization's president for 17 years. She was elected to the Board of the Virginia Baptist General Association and was a charter member of Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include one sister, Evelyn D. Orfield, Bristol, Virginia; one nephew, Craig Orfield, Bristol, Virginia, and Alexandria, Va.; one great-niece, Dawn Sullins, Abingdon; one great-great-nephew, Thomas Sullins, Abingdon; and one niece, Beverly R. Ripley, Louisa, Va.

Elizabeth Z. Gillespie
POUNDING MILL -- Elizabeth Zeigler Gillespie, 85, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, in Richlands, Va.
She was a native of Seabord, Va., a lifelong resident of Tazewell County, a housewife and a member of Pounding Mill Christian Church.
She was the widow of James Samuel Gillespie Sr.
Survivors include one son, James Samuel Gillespie Jr., Pounding Mill; one daughter, Sarah G. Seale, Salem, S.C.; four grandchildren, Leslie Seale Black, Dublin, Va., Stephen G. Seale, Radford, Va., Elizabeth Gillespie McRae, Athens Ga., and Ann Brett Gillespie, Cedar Falls, Iowa; and two great-grandchildren.

Josia Hess
HONAKER -- Mrs. Josia Hess, 87, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, in a Columbia Clinch Valley Hospital, Richlands.
She was a native of English, W.Va., had lived most of her life in the Honaker area, was a member of Gent's Chapel Church and, most recently, attended the Full Gospel House of Prayer, Drill.
She was the widow of Beverly Hess.
Survivors include five daughters, Ethel Mae Lister, Taylors, S.C., Mary Frances Taylor and Evelyn Ruth Hale, both of Honaker, Ruba Lou Fraser, Lebanon, and Gladys Pearl May, Bristol, Virginia; four sons, the Rev. Garland Burke Hess and Charles Edwin Hess, both of Honaker, Curtis Lewis Hess, Bristol, Virginia, and Earl Gene Hess, Gaffney, S.C.; four sisters, Beulah Hess and Irene Marshall, both of Honaker, Ida Hubbard, Powhatan, Va., and Marie Hubbard, Lebanon; one brother, Charles Owens, Weber City; 37 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Joseph D. Hester
MARION -- Joseph D. Hester, 72, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at his home.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, attended Concord College and taught school in West Virginia, Oregon and Colorado.
He was a member of Marion Baptist Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Harold R. Hester and William Hester, both of Marion; three nieces; and five nephews.

Ina R. Hopson
Ina Ruth Hopson, 67, of 2502 Shelby Street, Bristol, Tenn., died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a native of Greene County and moved to Bristol in 1959.
She was a retired employee of
Smith Kline Beecham Corporation and a member of Greystone Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include five sisters, Pearl Madison, Dean Bowman, Faye Harrison and Gail Ayers, all of Greeneville, Tenn., and Phyllis Saylor, Lakeland, Fla.; four brothers, Blaine Hopson, Lynn Hopson, Rex Hopson and Wayne Hopson, all of Greeneville; and several nieces and nephews.

CASTLEWOOD -- Mrs. Mabel Rose Jessee, 67, of Midlothian, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998.
She was the widow of William E. Jessee and a retired private duty nurse.
Survivors include one son, W. Allen Jessee, Tacoma, Wash.; two daughters, Linda G. Williams, Powhatan, Va., and Brenda K. Fox, Brighton, Colo.; two brothers, Utah Rose, Castlewood, and Dewey Rose, Tennessee; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Everett W. Johnson
GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Everett W. Johnson, 90, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, in Mt. Carmel East Hospital, Granville, Ohio.
He was a native of Southwest Virginia having spent most of his life here prior to moving to Ohio a few years ago.
He was a retired coal miner with United Mine Workers Union District 28, a member of Clintwood Masonic Lodge No. 66 F&AM, and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Billy Johnson, Columbus, Ohio; four daughters, Juda Bryant, Granville, Ohio, Jean Garrett, Bristol, Virginia, Nancy Linkous, Hampton, Va., and Norma Tipton, Greensboro, N.C.; five brothers, Carmel Johnson, Clinchco, Donald Johnson, Westerville, Ohio, Jimmy Johnson, Sandusky, Ohio, Ray Johnson, Norwalk, Ohio, and Winford Johnson, Vickery, Ohio; two sisters, Maxie Kennedy, Somerset, Ky., and Nell Deel, Westerville, Ohio; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Marsh M. Lewis
SALTVILLE -- Marsh M. Lewis, 86, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, in Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion.
He was a native of Rich Valley, Va., having lived there for 64 years, was born in Harlan, Ky., graduated from Pennington Gap High School and Virginia Tech.
He taught vocational agriculture at Rich Valley High School for 33 years, the highest degree of the Future Farmers of America was bestowed upon him.
He was a member of Rich Valley Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder for many years, a member of Masonic Lodge, Saltville, organized Rich Valley Farmers Club and was active in alumni activities of Virginia Tech and the Hokie Club.
He served as secretary of Rich Valley Fair and Horse Shows and for many years was a member on the Board of Directors of Smyth County Community Hospital and was a member of the Saltville Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (Parker) Lewis; two daughters, Elizabeth "Bette" Lewis Everson, Columbus, Ohio, and Lumberton, N.C., and Robin Lewis Beckett, Saltville; one brother, James P. Lewis, Lebanon; two sisters, Virginia Lewis Sullivan, Pennington Gap, and Henrietta Lewis Logan, Christiansburg; five grandsons; and one great-grandson.

BIG STONE GAP -- Beulah Thelma Lovell, 78, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at her home.
She was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap community, a homemaker and the widow of Edgar Lovell.

Johnson County and was the widow of Hoy L. Mast.
She was a member of Evergreen Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Norma L. Kyle, Boone, N.C.; one brother, Edgar Bumgardner, Mountain City; two stepsons, Bobby G. Mast, North East, Md., and Jackie L. Mast, Sugar Grove, N.C.; one grandson; five step-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.
