TROUTDALE, Va. -- Thomas Edward French, 70, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He had lived in the Troutdale area for over 20 years and was a member of the Troutdale Community Fire Department where he served as chief during the mid-80s. He worked as a body mechanic for Turkey Pen, A to Z Body Shop and for Robinette Chevy-Olds for several years.
He attended Valley View Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Violet Ford West French; one daughter, Kathy Storman, Ft. Pierce, Fla.; one son, Gunner French, Atkins, Va.; one brother, Carl French, Ft. Pierce; two stepsons, Dan West, Marion, and Edsel West, Sugar Grove; one grandson; one great-grandson; two step-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia C. Gillenwater
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Virginia Cullop Gillenwater, 77, died Friday, July 31, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Bakersfield.
She was the widow of Charles Edward Gillenwater.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Larsen, Bakersfield; two sons, Stuart Gillenwater, Tennessee, and Charles Edward Gillenwater, Bakersfield; one sister, Myrtle Hall, Marion, Va.; four brothers, Eugene Cullop, Thomas B. Cullop Jr., and Ed Cullop, all of Marion, and Roy Cullop, Saltville; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

DANTE, Va. -- Timothy James Hale, 41, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, in Russell County Medical Center, Lebanon.
He was a native of Russell County.
Survivors include his wife, Teresa Ann Hale; one daughter, Estelia Chiquita Mair Hale, Dante; one son, Antwain Timothy James Hale, Dante; his mother, Julia M. Hale, Cleveland, Va.; four sisters, Darthulla Swann, Bristol Virginia, Mina Ruth Hairston, Savannah, Ga., Sally Talford, St. Paul and Joy A. Taylor, Martinsville, Va.; one brother, Damon Hale Jr., Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Burrell W. Kinder
BLOUNTVILLE -- Burrell Wayne Kinder, 61, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Hope, N.M.
He was a former resident of Los Angeles County, Calif., where he was a supervisor for the L.A. County Road Department.
He was the owner of the American Asphalt Paving Company and had lived in Sullivan County for one year.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Ann Kinder; one daughter, Loriann Calcott, Blountville; one son, Garry Calcott, Blountville; and two grandsons, James Burrell and Justic Wayne Calcott.
There will be a private graveside service.
Blountville Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Kinder.
J. Wade Miller
MOUNTAIN CITY -- J. Wade Miller, 85, of 392 Forge Creek Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, in Watauga Medical Center, Boone, N.C.
He was a native of
Johnson County and was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Boone Miller.
He was a retired farmer.
Survivors include one son, Robert J. "Bob" Miller, Mountain City; one nephew, David Miller, Bristol Tennessee; and one niece, Phyllis Pendergrass, Bristol Tennessee; and several cousins.

Troy E. Mutter
MARION -- Troy Edward Mutter, 53, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998 at his home.
He was a native of Dayton, Ohio, and had lived in Marion for the past ten years.
He was a U.S. Army veteran with nine years service, including time in the Vietname War. He earned the National Defense Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Vietnam Service Campaign Ribbon.
He attended the U.S. Army Non-Commissioned Officer Drill Sergeant Academy.
Survivors include his wife, Janet White Mutter; two sons, Brian Mutter, Chilhowie, and Shane Mutter, of the home; three daughters, Tracy Mutter Horn, Chilhowie, Renee Mutter, Bristol Tennessee; Chassity White, of the home; his mother, Eunice T. Mutter, Abingdon; one brother, Doug Mutter, Glade Spring; two sisters, Cheryl Merritt, Glenco, Ala., Terry Compton, Abingdon; several nieces and nephews.

Odus H. Sturgill
POUND -- Odus H. Sturgill, 89, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, in St. Mary's Hospital, Norton.
He was of the Freewill Baptist faith, a retired coal miner and retired self employed carpenter and mason in construction work.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Dotson Sturgill.
Survivors include one daughter, Laudina Keith, McClure, Va.; two sons, Royce H. Sturgill, Pound, and Roger L. Sturgill, Cherokee, N.C.; one brother, Oakly Sturgill, Dallas, Ga.; one sister, Maude Smith, Hays, N.C.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

CHILHOWIE -- James Elmer Thomas, 81, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at his home.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Catherine Hamm Thomas.
He was a farmer and a member of the Joy Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Blanche Taylor Thomas; one son, James Donald Thomas, Atlanta; two daughters, Jo Ann Thomas, Roanoke, and Linda Frances Currin, Sugar Grove, Va.; one brother, Clyde William Thomas, Marion; one sister, Mrs. Ward (Carrie) Wagner, Meadowview; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

PINEY FLATS -- Clifford Thompson, 90, of 543 Austin Springs Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, in
Johnson City Medical Center.
He was a native of Sullivan County and had lived in Elizabethton from 1930-1947 before returning to Piney Flats.
He was retired from North American Rayon in Elizabethton and was a charter member of Piney Flats Presbyterian church, where he was a member of the adult Sunday school class.
He was a member of M.M. Martin Masonic Lodge No. 547.
Survivors include his wife, Mayme Carr Thompson; one daughter, Phyllis Hall, Piney Flats; one grandson, Clifford Hall, Piney Flats; one great-grandson; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
