Joseph S. Malesky
NORTON -- Joseph S. Malesky, 88, of Virginia Avenue, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at his home.
He was a native of Harrison County, W.Va., and a graduate of West Virginia University.
He was a retired District Manager of the former U.S. Bureau of Mines Office, in Norton, and a former instructor in the Mining Technology Program at Pikeville College. He served the Bureau of Mines in Vincennes, Ind., Barbourville, Ky., and Norton for nearly 30 years. While in Vincennes, he captained a mine rescue team at the 1947 Centralia Mine explosion, one of the worst mine disasters in the United States. From 1957 until 1971, he supervised the district office in Norton where he was responsible for coal mine health and safety in Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. The Department of the Interior awarded him its Distinguished Service Award in 1972.
Following his retirement, he joined the Mining Technology Program at Pikeville College as an instructor in explosives. He was employed in Pikeville College Coal Industry Technical Assistance Center for five years. In 1983, the Coal Mining Health, Safety and Research Institute at Virginia Tech presented him its professional award for his outstanding contributions to the coal industry, the mining profession and the nation.
Mr. Malesky was a member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the Kiwanis Club of Norton, where, in 1990, he was selected as Kiwanian of the Year. He was a member and elder in the Norton Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Gaynelle Straight Malesky; one son, Lann A. Malesky, Fairfax, Va.; one sister, Anne Gray, Hurst, Texas; two grandsons, Lann A. Malesky Jr., and Lowell Malesky; and several nieces and nephews.

Mendie R. Matney
HURLEY -- Mendie Rife Matney, 70, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Buchanan County, was of the Baptist faith and a former custodian at the Hurley High School. She was a homemaker and the widow of Vestle Matney.
Survivors include one son, Teddy Matney, Hurley; two sisters, Dicy Cline, Hurley, and Myrtle Belcher, Beckley, W.Va.; four brothers, Harold Rife and Corbin Rife, both of Hurley, Edd Rife, Crab Orchard, W.Va., and Thurman Rife, Oceana, W.Va.; five granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

James W. Nichols Sr.
BONNE TERRE, Mo. -- James W. Nichols Sr., 77, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, in John Cochran Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
He was a native of Bluff City, a member of Dogwood Chapel, in Lake Timberline, Mo., and was retired from the City of St. Louis Water Department. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Novella Weaver Nichols; two daughters, Lawanda Nichols, Palmetto, Fla., and Mrs. Jimmy Lee (Sandra) Dyer, High Ridge, Mo.; one son, James W. Nichols Jr., Bonne Terre; one brother, Robert F. Nichols; three sisters, Lucille Carrier, Ruth
Smith and Lena Dotson, all of Bluff City; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Audra Parks Poff, 83, of Bristol Virginia, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, in Wellmont-Bristol Regional Medical Center.

GLADE SPRING -- Mrs. Lacie Arnette Qualls died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was a member of the Glade Spring Baptist Church where she served as clerk of the church, Sunday school teacher and choir member for many years.
She was the widow of Roy E. Qualls and retired from Clifton Insurance Agency.
Survivors include one sister-in-law, Emily Qualls, Pound; and several cousins.

Hattie S. Robinette
COEBURN -- Hattie Salyers Robinette, 87, of the Dry Fork Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998.
She was retired from Rockwell Industries and a member of Mary Martin Presbyterian Church, in Dry Fork. She was the widow of Cecil E. Robinette.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. J.T. (Barbara) Caruso, Norton; one son, Bobby Fred Robinette, Lebanon; one brother, Lody Bob Salyers, Coeburn; three sisters, Fannie Canada, Canada, Ky., Alma Varney and Mrs. Jonah (Mabel) Varney, both of Belfry, Ky.; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Jack Rogers
Jack "Jackie" Rogers, 53, of Bristol Virginia, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, in Wellmont Hospice House.
He was a native of Robbinsville, N.C., and had been a resident of Bristol for the past two years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a self-employed tree surgeon.
He was a member of the Rockwood Masonic Lodge and the Knights of Pythias. He attended the Freewill Baptist Church, in Bluff City.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Rogers; three daughters, Lisa Pittman, Connecticut, Frankie Hicks, Oliver Springs, Tenn., and April Renee Rogers, Kingston, Tenn.; two sons, John David Rogers, Bristol Virginia, and David Lee Crisp; two sisters, Marilyn Hawkins and Reba K. Kirk, both of Morganton, N.C.; three brothers, Harold Rogers,
Johnson City, and David Rogers and Tony Rogers, both of Morganton, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Lee W. Vance
YAKIMA, Wash. -- Lee W. Vance, 71, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, in Yakima.
He was a native and grew up in Richlands, where as a boy, he excelled in sports. In 1953, he moved to the Yakima area.
He was employed in the grocery business with Wrays Thirftway, serving 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Edwards Vance; one daughter, Latachia Lee Vance, Yakima; four sons, Rickey Lee Vance, Belfair, Wash., Rory Lee Vance, Randall, Wash., Charley Lee Vance, North Bend, Wash., and Clinton Lee Vance, Seattle; two sisters, Opal Crawford, Maryland, and Clara Hess, Virginia; one brother, Marvin Vance, Maryland; and three grandchildren.

BLUFF CITY -- Roy M. Watson, 77, of 128 Echo Lane, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, in Wellmont-Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, the owner and operator of Watson Construction Company and a member of Bethel View Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice "Bea" Watson; one daughter, Mrs. Vernon (Clara) Saylor, Bluff City; one son, Charles Watson, Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Winnie Hodges, Bluff City, and Grace Leonard, Ocala, Fla.; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
