ABINGDON -- Mary Jean Harless, 51, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, in the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville.
She had spent all of her life in Russell County and Abingdon and was a member of the Abingdon Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Harless, Abingdon; her mother, Maudie Harless, Abingdon; two brothers, Ronnie Harless, Damascus, and Freddie Harless, Abingdon; a sister, Sue Cuddy, Meadowview; six nephews, two nieces; a great-nephew; and a great-niece.

Verta E. Morris
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Verta Edith Morris, 92, formerly of Big Stone Gap, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, in St. Mary's Health Center, in Jefferson City.
She was a native of Bedford, Va., and the widow of Charles Edward Morris Sr.
She received an associate of arts degree from Virginia State University, in Petersburg, Va., and was a school teacher in Lynchburg, Va. She was also an interior decorator, in Big Stone Gap.
She was a member of the Mt. Hermon Presbyterian Church, Big Stone Gap, where she was organist and pianist for over 50 years. She served for 30 years as president of the Big Stone Gap PTA, served as chairwoman of the Heart Fund, was an active volunteer with the Lonesome Pine Hospital and various churches and auxiliaries in Big Stone Gap.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs.
Foster D. (Miriam Morris) Fuller, Jefferson City; a son, Charles E. Morris Jr., Normal, Ill.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Glen E. Naimo
COLLINSVILLE, Va. -- Glen Edward Naimo, infant son of James and Khristian Naimo, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, in Duke University Hospital, Durham, N.C.
Survivors in addition to his parents include his paternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Lillie and Wallace Dutton, Bristol Tennessee; his maternal grandmother, Miriam LaPrade, Collinsville; his paternal great-grandmother, Virginia Almany, Blountville; and several aunts and uncles.
The funeral will be held Friday in Martinsville.

James R. Sayers
MARION -- James Roger "Poppy" Sayers, 69, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998.
He was a 40-year employee of Brunswick, an avid fan of Hurricane football and basketball and a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife Barbara "Botts" Sayers; two daughters, Mrs. Bobby (Angela) Alley, Rural Retreat, and Mrs. Shon (Tammy) Peake, Marion; two brothers, Warren Sayers, Marion, and Malcolm Sayers, Baltimore; two sisters, Virginia Blevins and Grey Pennington, both of Marion; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

POUND -- Gerald Frederick "Fred" Short, 72, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, in St. Mary's Hospital.

Donald P. Tobias
MEDINA, Ohio -- Donald P. Tobias, 63, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in Hospice Care Center, Copley, Ohio.
He was raised in Long Island, N.Y.
He served as a U.S. Naval Aviator Carrier Pilot then pursued a business career in New York City and later Boston.
He was a career development consultant for many years in various markets including Boston, Hartford, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and the greater Cleveland area.
He went into semi retirement two years ago and worked as an International Amway distributor.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ann Tobias; two sons, Keith P. Tobias and Dean P. Tobias, both of Rhode Island, Mass.; his mother, Emily Tobias, Worcester, Ohio; a grandchild; a sister, Eileen Rezvani, Chicago, Ill.; and a brother, Gordon Tobias, San Antonio, Texas.
Services will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Ohio.

KINGSPORT -- Thomas Martin Trent, 47, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, in Indian Path Medical Center, Kingsport.
He had made his home in Kingsport with his brother and sister-in-law for the past 23 years.
He attended the Temple Baptist Church, Kingsport, where he was a member of the Sunbeam Class. He also attended the Dawn of Hope School,
Johnson City, for more than 20 years.
Survivors include five sisters, Juanita Morris, Roanoke, Janice Gilpin, Coeburn, Mrs. Lester (Dora Lee) McReynolds, Nashville, Mrs. Jack (Phyllis) Garverick, Belleville, Ohio, and Margaret Ann Vaux, Summerfield, Fla.; nine brothers, Paul Trent, Coeburn, Kyle Trent, Batesburg, S.C., Ray Trent, Kingsport, Frank Trent, Narrows, Richard Trent, Brooker, Fla., John Trent, Summerfield Fla., Ely Trent, Delaware, Ohio, Leon Trent, Phyllis, Ky., and Harry Trent, Lexington, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

VANSANT -- Chloe Viers, 93, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, in Heritage Hall Health Care, Clintwood.
She was a native of Buchanan County and attended the Old Regular Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Paul Viers, Harold Viers and Aven "Tootie" Viers, all of Vansant; a daughter, Ilene Owens, Vansant; two sisters, Kelsie Deel and Lola Deel, both of Staunton; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Charles E. Woodard
HERNDON, Va. -- LTJG Charles Ervin "Chuck" Woodard, 26, a Naval Flight Officer is missing and presumed dead following an aircraft mishap on the USS Enterprise, Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998.
He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1990, and from the University of Virginia in 1995 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering.
He was active with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and Officers Christian Fellowship.
He received the National Defense Service Medal and was en route for deployment with his squadron, VAQ 130, which is home-ported at NAS Whidbey Island, Wash.
Survivors include his parents, Fred and Laura Woodard, Herndon; a sister, Mrs. Andy (Becky) Fetzer, Bristol Virginia; and his grandparents, Joanne and Jim Alworth, San Diego, Calif., and Jeanette and Jim Fletcher, Warrenton, N.C.
A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Epiphany, Herndon, at 2 p.m. Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Charles E. Woodard Memorial Fund, c//o the Church of the Epiphany.
Orpha M. Barnett
GRUNDY -- Orpha Mae Barnett, 82, of the Slate Creek area, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in Pikeville Methodist Hospital, Pikeville, Ky.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Elk Creek Freewill Baptist Church and a homemaker.
She was the widow of Wallace Barnett.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Sturgill, Abingdon; two sons, Joseph Barnett, Hurley, and Denver Barnett, Grundy; three sisters, Lucy Owens, Grundy, Lydia Compton, Vansant, and Nora Ward, Front Royal, Va.; a brother, Hufford Stiltner, Grundy; ten grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
