Sidney L. Spahr

URBANA, Ill. -- Dr. Sidney Louis Spahr, 63, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998 at the Carle Arbours, Savoy, Ill.
He was a native of Washington County and a resident of Urbana for the past 34 years.
He attended Virginia High School and was a 1954 graduate of Stuart High School, Stuart, Va.
He was a professor at the University of Illinois and received his bachelor's degree from Virginia PolyTechnic Institute in 1958. He earned his master's in 1960 and doctorate in 1964 from Pennsylvania State University. In 1964, Dr. Spahr joined the Department of Dairy Science at the University of Illinois, Urbana, and completed 34 years of dedicated service to the dairy industry of Illinois. He served two years, 1970 to 1972, at the National Academy of Science, Washington, D.C., authored two textbooks, seven book chapters, and over 50 technical journal articles.
He received the prestigious MSD AGVET National Dairy Management Award, in 1987, from the College of ACES.
He lectured in the United States, Netherlands, Israel, Japan, Kenya, Canada, Russia, Ireland, Germany, England and Denmark. His research accomplishments included contributions to electronic animal identification, dairy automation, artificial intelligence, electronic mastitis detection, electronic estrus detection and animal waste management.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Spencer Spahr; a son, Douglas Spahr, Wilmington, Del.; a daughter, Diane Krueger, Kirkland, Wash.; two stepdaughters, Leigh Anne Godfrey, Minneapolis, and Sara Leigh Biggs, Urbana, Ill.; two brothers, Edward Spahr, Travelers Rest, S.C., and Thomas Spahr, Cedar Hill, Texas; a sister, Evelyn Thomson, Portsmouth, Va.; and a grandson.

Charles E. Stone Jr.

Charles Ellis Stone Jr., 85, of 133 Grandor St., Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at his home.
He was a native of Ayer, Mass., and had lived in Florida before moving to the Bristol area where he had made his home for the past 25 years.
He was a retired Aerospace Quality Manager for the Space Program at Cape Canaveral, and was the owner//operator of Three Stones Inc.
He was a member of State Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Helen L. Stone; a son, Terrence Stone, Phoenix, Ariz., a daughter-in-law; two grandchildren, Michael Stone and Laura Wacker; and three great-grandchildren.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

Shirley A. Talley

ELKHART, Ind. -- Shirley A. Talley, 60, of 1334 McPherson Street, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, in Elkhart General Hospital.
She was a native of Plasterco, Va.
She was employed with Polytron Corporation for over 13 years and attended Riverview General Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Fred W. Talley; a daughter, Vicki J. Talley, Elkhart; a son, Jeff D. Talley, Saltville; a brother, Thomas Bays, Elkhart; her mother and stepfather, Mike and Marie Aistrop Schmatz, Elkhart; and two grandsons.
Funeral services and burial will be held Wednesday in Elkhart.

Mattie T. Trogdon

MEADOWVIEW -- Mrs. Mattie Lou Thomas Trogdon, 69, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County.
Survivors include her husband, Edmund "Eddie" Trogdon; four sons, James Trogdon, Larry Trogdon and Mark Trogdon, all of Meadowview, and William "Bill" Trogdon, Bristol Tennessee; a daughter, Linda Casey, Meadowview; a brother, Yokley Thomas, Meadowview; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.
Farris Funeral Service, Abingdon, is in charge.

Mollie P. Willis

EAST STONE GAP -- Mollie Poole Willis, 101, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, in Heritage Hall Health Care, Big Stone Gap.
She had lived in East Stone Gap for the past 35 years and was a member of the East Stone Gap United Methodist Church.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Holding Funeral Home is in charge.

Frank B. Wyatt

CHILHOWIE -- Frank Boyd Wyatt, 92, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998 at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Emegene Dolinger Wyatt.
Barnett's Funeral Home, Marion, is in charge.

Joe C. Hawkins

LEBANON -- Joe C. Hawkins, 66, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998.
He was a lifelong resident of Russell County, a retired employee of the Russell County Public Library and a farmer. He was a member of the Green Valley Baptist Church.
Mr. Hawkins was a member of Stuart Masonic Lodge No. 224 AF&AM, and the Abingdon Order of the Eastern Star No. 182.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Louise Robinson Hawkins; a son, Jerry A. Hawkins, Lebanon; a sister, Mrs. Linda Ford, LaFollette, Tenn.; two grandsons, Joey Hawkins and Jay Hawkins, both of Lebanon; and two nephews.
Russell County Funeral Home, Lebanon, is in charge.

Edgar W. Hayes

OWOSSO, Mich. -- Edgar W. Hayes, 75, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at his home.
He was a native of Stokesbury, W.Va., and a former resident of Konnarock, Va. He was a veteran World War II, and received a Purple Heart.
Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn Hayes; five daughters, Kathleen Ramsey, Davison, Mich., Mrs. Dave (Patricia) Newport, Owosso, Nancy Granger, Lennon, Mich., and Mrs. Steve (Barbara) Johnson and Bonnie Hayes, both of Durand, Mich.; a son, Edgar W. Hayes Jr., St. Johnson, Mich.; three sisters, Irene Haga, Konnarock, Reba Long, Amelia, Va., and Janet Ashley, Whitetop, Va.; three brothers, Clarence Hayes, Konnarock, Earl Hayes and Russell Hayes, both of Arcadia, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Anna M. Jones

BIG STONE GAP -- Anna Marie Jones, 39, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, in Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include her father, Everett Jones; her mother, Anna Mae Jones; a brother, Mark David Jones, Kingsport; five sisters, Linda Bolinsky, Big Stone Gap, Donna Eldridge, Richmond, Martha June Esqueff and Nancy Jane Porter, both of Wytheville, and Karen Sue Eldridge, Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews.
Gilliam Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, is in charge.

Arthur L. King

BIG STONE GAP -- Arthur L. King, 72, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He lived most of his life in Big Stone Gap and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He served three years in the Merchant Marines, served 22 years in the U.S. Army as a 1st Sgt., and was a member of VFW Post 10673-Clinchport//Duffield.
Survivors include a brother, J.B. King, Big Stone Gap.
Gilliam Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, is in charge.
