Elizabeth Brooks
Elizabeth "Bettye" Hairston Moon Brooks, 67, of 1230 W. Fayette St., Martinsville, died Monday, Aug, 16, 2004, at her home.
She was born Feb. 19, 1937, in Beckley, W.Va., a daughter of Albert Hairston and Gracie Lee Givens. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Delores Jean Hairston and Lorene Givens; and two brothers, Leon Givens and James Howard Hiarston.
She was retired from the Martinsville School System, where she worked for four years, and had worked as sales manager for GlobmanÕs Department Store for 20 years. She was a member of Alpha Faith Temple Church, missionary and Adult Choir, and a former member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Martinsville & Henry County. She had lived in Martinsville for 48 years.
Surviving are her husband, Jesse M. Brooks of the home; a daughter, Ammalene M. King, and three brothers, Alphonso Givens, Ernest Givens and Frank D. Hairston, all of Martinsville; one granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hines Funeral Services Chapel with Bishop Waverly Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home 30 minutes before the funeral and other times at the home.

Virginia C. Byrd
Virginia Katherine Cathcart Bell, 90, of the Blue Ridge Rehab Center, Martinsville, died Aug. 15, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. She was the widow of Robert Bell.
She was born on Oct. 29, 1913, in Davidson, N.C., and was a retired beautician, having owned and operated beauty parlors in Muncie, Ind.
Surviving are one son, James Nolen Byrd of Martinsville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Roselawn Burial Park with the Rev. Curtis Ashley presiding.
Norris Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. today.

Mary E. Dandridge
The funeral for Mary E. Dandridge, 65, of 1305 Barn Owl Court, Suffolk, who died Aug. 12, 2004, was held Monday at Mt. Pisgah Joyland Temple. Elder Steven Pierce officiated and burial was in Carver Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Victor Watkins, Vincent Dandridge, Lewis Dandridge, Roland Dandridge, Juan Dandridge and Anthony Brooks.
Hines Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.

Louise K. Deal
The funeral Louise Kendrick Deal, 76, of Patrick Springs, who died Aug. 13, 2004, was held Monday at the Patrick Springs Church of God of Prophecy. The Rev. Dale Bailey officiated. Burial was in the County Line Church of God of Prophecy cemetery.
Pallbearers were Josh Deal, Ronnie Deal, Donnie Deal, Clarence Gilley, Donald Plaster and Darrell Plaster.
Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

James E. Hill Sr.
The funeral for James "Jim" Edward Hill Sr., 84, of Ridgeway, who died Aug. 13, 2004, was held Monday at Laurel Springs Church in Mt. Airy, N.C. The Rev. Woodrow Flippin officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by VFW Post 2019, Mt. Airy Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain.
Pallbearers were Jody Smithers, B.J. Jamison, Tony Hill, Wayne Hurley, Jonathan Hill and Brad Hylton.
Bassett Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Camden A. Johnson
Camden Akers Johnson, 86, of Claudville, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
He was born in Patrick County on Feb. 26, 1918, to Nathan and Flora Pigg Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Montgomery Johnson; and a brother, Wesley Johnson.
He retired from Stanley Chevrolet as a mechanic and was a member of Mary Horner Walker Presbyterian Church.
Surviving is a son, Cam Johnson of Claudville.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Johnson family cemetery.
The body is at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart where the viewing will be until 7:30 p.m. today.

George T. Martin
George Thomas "Tom" Martin, 70, of Martinsville, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004.
He was born Feb. 1, 1934, in Axton, a son of George Edward "Ed" and Maggie Davis Martin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Arlene Martin; and two brothers, Rennard "Ren" Martin and Alvin "Tadpole" Martin.
He was a 1952 graduate of Axton School; served with the U.S. Army in Germany and in Beirut, Lebanon, from 1956-58, and was recalled for active duty during the Berlin crisis in 1961-62.
Martin worked for DeShazo Oil Co. for a period and retired from DuPont with 30 years of service. He also was co-owner of Martinsville Vending for several years and co-owner of C & C Fiberglass in Collinsville.
Surviving is his wife of 47 years, Polly Gardner Martin of the home; a daughter, Roxanne Martin-Watt of Cleveland, Ohio; a son, Brian Thomas Martin of Roanoke; three grandchildren; three sisters, Hazel Lowery of Norfolk, Cleo Wall of Axton and Euna Parcell of Collinsville; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Norris Funeral Services with Pastor Tim Satterfield officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Burial Park.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. today, and other times at the home at 1624 Rivermont Heights, Martinsville.
Memorials may be made to Trinity Friends Church, 5 Summitt St., Martinsville, Va. 24112.

Ollie Mae Moore
The funeral for Ollie Mae Moore, 85, of 30 Samuel H. Hairston School Road, Martinsville, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Stanfield-Miller Funeral Home with Elder Joe Scales officiating. Burial will be in Hylton Thessalonal Primitive Baptist Church cemetery at Stuart.
She died Aug. 15, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born in Patrick County on Oct. 3, 1918, to John Sherman Martin and Blanche Scales Martin. Her husband was the late Roy Damon Moore.
She retired from Standard Garment and Bassett Chair Co., and she was a member of Hylton Thessalonial Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Gwendolyn D. Moore of Martinsville and Virginia D. Bulter of Houston, Texas; one sister, America M. Hylton of Spencer; one brother, Benjamin Martin of Arlington; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family is receiving friends at the home on Samuel H. Hairston Road and at noon Thursday at the funeral home before the service.

Douglas G. Moxley
The funeral for Douglas Gordon Moxley, 84, of 1237 Daniel Road, Axton, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Gary Robertson officiating. Entombment will be at Roselawn Burial Park.
He died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at his residence.
A Henry County native, he was born on Oct. 19, 1919, a son of Ethel Powell Moxley and Samuel Moxley. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Derlin Wilson Moxley; a son, Leon Moxley; brothers, James and Marvin Moxley; and sisters, Lois Brown, Sadie Hurd and Iris Hairfield.
Moxley was a self-employed contractor and a member of Mount Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are one son, David Moxley of Axton; three daughters, Joyce Gravely, Judy Gauldin and Janie Lester, and two sisters, Ruth Wilson and Jean Brown, all of Axton; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Mount Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church and other times at the home of Joyce Gravely, 1275 Daniel Road, Axton.
Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
