Rite set for Charles A. Reid Jr.
Aug 01, 2002
A funeral for Charles Alexander Reid Jr., who was elected Greensville County treasurer 11 consecutive times, will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Main Street United Methodist Church in Emporia.
Mr. Reid died Tuesday at age 87.
A 1935 business administration graduate of what is now Virginia Tech, he was first elected treasurer of his hometown of Emporia in 1938 and in 1947 received the Democratic nomination for county treasurer.
For four decades, he was re-elected without opposition. He is believed to be the longest-serving elected official in the county's history.
"He was fair to the taxpayers and he definitely was honest," said Rosa Doyle, current county treasurer who was a longtime deputy under Mr. Reid. "He loved Greensville."
In 1987, Mr. Reid, then in his early 70s, beat an opponent for the office. He retired at the end of his term in 1991.
"By that last year he probably had the longest service of anyone in the state treasurer's association," said Doyle.
Mr. Reid served in leadership posts in a number of local civic groups including the Lions Club and the county's Ruritan International chapter. He was a former district financial officer for county social services and was a 50-year member and past treasurer of the Widow's Son Masonic Lodge No. 150.
For many years he was involved with Boy Scouting and was a former director and chairman of the Emporia Federal Savings and Loan Association, now part of Essex Savings Bank.
Survivors include his wife, Winnifred Everett Reid; a daughter Sara Reid Gordon, of Chester and three grandchildren.
