A.W. 'Salty' Hawkins Jr.
Nov 22, 2002
Adolphus Wise "Salty" Hawkins Jr. was always a competitor. A boxer in his college days at the University of Virginia, he also enjoyed tennis and racquetball.
But it was during a summer study session at Yale University that he was introduced to squash.
A retired investment executive who founded the Virginia Squash Racquets Association in the early 1970s, he died Tuesday after a long illness.
Though he was never a highly skilled squash player, said family members and friends, he was certainly one of the sport's bigger promoters. He led the state association for about a decade.
"He didn't really excel in any of the sports he took part in, but he loved all of them," said Bette Hawkins, his wife of 49 years.
When he was diagnosed with diabetes. in his 50s, she said, his athletics pursuits became even more important.
"He was certainly the model for taking care of oneself. For him, squash was therapeutic, and he tried to play as often as he could. He didn't work out or jog. He always chose competition."
Ted Price, current association president, said Mr. Hawkins built the organization by gathering up tennis and racquetball players in the area and introducing them to squash.
Though the group had waned in the 1980s, it was resurrected about 10 years ago, with Mr. Hawkins' steadfast support.
"It's because of Salty that we have squash courts at the Westwood Club, and those were the first in Richmond. He was particularly good at getting youth involved. If a young person wanted to play, they could always turn to Salty."
After his World War II Navy service, the Culpeper native completed his degree in economics at the University of Virginia. He also did graduate work at Balliol College, Oxford, and the University of Paris.
For several years, he operated A.W. Hawkins Inc., a family owned trucking firm his father had established.
He sold the company in 1964 and entered the commercial real estate field, later opening a real estate department in the investment firm of Anderson & Strudwick.
There, he became vice president overseeing mergers and acquisitions and later held a similar post at Scott & Stringfellow. In the late 1990s, he retired after about two decades as a consultant.
Outside of his sports interests, Mr. Hawkins was a world traveler who particularly enjoyed his stays in England. He spent much of the last year of his life traveling with his children.
"He thought travel was essential to enriching yourself and your attitudes about people," his wife said. "We really had a wonderful last year together."
In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, John Hawkins, of Baltimore, Jill Czajkowski, of Chapel Hill, N.C., and David Hawkins of St. Davids, Pa.; a sister, Dorothy DeShazo, of Fairfax; and eight grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. A private burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery.
