Ruth N. Tankersley
BIG STONE GAP -- Ruth Naomi Tankersley, 68, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, in Indian Path Hospital, Kingsport.
She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Big Stone Gap, and a devoted homemaker. She was the widow of Claude P. Tankersley Sr.
Survivors include two sons, Claude Tankersley Jr., Big Stone Gap, and Alvin Tankersley, Norton; and a grandson, Brian Tankersley, Norton.
Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise, is in charge.

Howard R. Taylor
Howard R. Taylor, of Bristol Tennessee, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, in Laughlin Memorial Hospital, Greeneville, Tenn.
He was a lifelong resident of Bristol and was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Kathleen Grubb Taylor.
He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps with the rank of Sgt. Maj., after 25 years of service. He was a life member of King Masonic Lodge No. 461, with over 60 years of service, a life member of Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post No. 6975, a member of Hackler-Wood American Legion Post No. 145; and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association.
Mr. Taylor was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three special friends.

Martin C. Adams
LEBANON -- Martin Columbus Adams, 80, formerly of Elkhorn City, Ky., died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, in Russell County Medical Center.
He was a native of Pike County, Ky., a retired coal miner and U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Jessie Levall Baker Adams; three daughters, Marilyn Beuse, Franklin Park, Ill., Linda Kay Pahnke, Machesney Park, Ill., and Ollie Irene Adams Parks, Lebanon; four sons, Martin Roy Adams and Billy Louis Adams, both of Addison, Ill., Robert Eugene Adams, Hanover Park, Ill., and Danny Gene Adams, Lebanon; a sister, Opal Marie Adams Frank, Hartville, Ohio; and 15 grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial will be held Tuesday in Elkhorn City, Ky.
Bailey Funeral Home, Elkhorn City, Ky., is in charge.

Rachel Baker
Rachel Baker, of 149 Keith Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at her home.
Akard Funeral Home is in charge.

John E. Bell
QUEENS, N.Y. -- John Edward Bell, formerly of Bristol Tennessee, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, in Queens.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday in Saint Albany Baptist Church.

Elizabeth L. Bentley
MARION -- Mrs. Elizabeth Lucille Bentley, 70, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was the widow of Bill June Bentley and attended the Gethsemane Baptist Church. She was a member of the Marion Baptist Church Sunday School in the Senior Citizens Center.
Survivors include two daughters, Polly Fleenor and Carol Barker; a sister, Donna Mae Pruitt, Rich Valley; three brothers, Charlie Bill Armstrong, Atkins, Sherman Armstrong, Adwolfe, and Walter Armstrong, Rich Valley; two grandsons; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
Barnett's Funeral Home, Marion, is in charge.

Glenna J. Branham
CLINCHCO -- Glenna Jean Branham, 53, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at her home.
She was a native of Dickenson County and grew up there, then moved to Michigan in 1962, and resided there until she returned to Dickenson County in 1993.
She was a member of the Mill Creek Freewill Baptist Church, a Sunday school teacher and a member of the women's auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Herbert "Poley" Branham; a daughter, Tina Stamper, Michigan; two sons, Andy Branham, Michigan, and Jeff Branham, Clinchco; three sisters, Mary Viers, Michigan, Mildred Davidson, Tennessee, and Diane Davis, Haysi; two brothers, Larry Stallard, Louisiana, and Benny Stallard, Haysi; and nine grandchildren.

Dorthula M. Carroll
BIG STONE GAP -- Dorthula M. "Dot" Carroll, 72, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, in Norton Community Hospital.
She was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap, a homemaker and a member of East Stone Gap Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Clinton Carroll; five sons, Robert Morris Carroll, Maryville, Tenn., Gary M. Carroll and Scott Carroll, both of Big Stone Gap, Melvin Gregory Carroll, Whispering Pines, N.C., and Clinton Mark Carroll, Kingsport; four sisters, Mildred Ann Carroll, Roanoke, Cora Sue Leonard, Kingsport, Donna Jean Barnette, Big Stone Gap, and Sharon Denise Carroll, Richmond; two sisters, Easter Adams and Margaret Robinette; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Gilliam Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, is in charge.

Harry Carter
WISE -- Harry B. Carter, 87, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, in Norton Community Hospital.
He was a former resident of Norton before making his home in Wise and was of the Presbyterian faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Vincil Carter.
Survivors include a daughter, Agnes Marie Farmer, Richmond; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two nephews.

Ronald E. Caudill
WEBER CITY -- The Rev. Ronald E. Caudill, 62, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at his home.
He was a resident of Weber City and the Pastor of the Pennington Gap Church of God.
Survivors include five daughters, Jamie L. Caudill, Fort Myers, Fla., Carmen G. Catugna, Cape Coral, Fla., Lisa G. Steffey, Wise, Melissa J. Lovin, Kingsport, and R. Hope Rhea, Castalia, Ohio; two sisters, Audrey Thompson, Norton, and Charlotte Dickerson, Appomatox, Va.; a brother, Wayne Caudill, Manassas, Va.; and seven grandchildren.

Arvie Edwards
BIRCHLEAF, Va. -- Arvie Edwards, 95, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at the home of his son.
He was a native of Dickenson County, was preceded in death by his wife, Vernie Lou Counts Edwards, and attended the Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Cotella Owens, Haysi, Lavonie Yates and Marie Arrington, both of Brichleaf; three sons, Rosco Edwards and Gary Edwards, both of Brichleaf, and Arvie Edwards Jr., Lake Havasu, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Haysi Funeral Home is in charge.

Mary D. Holt
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- Mary Dyer Duty Holt, 71, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at her home.
She was a native of Haysi, had been a homemaker for many years and was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church, of Oak Ridge.
Survivors include four sons, Russell H. Holt and Tallie E. Holt Jr., both of Oak Ridge, Charles Duty and Jim Duty, both of Bee, Va.; four daughters, Rachel Henderson, Milpitas, Calif., Linda Bass and Janet Garner, Clinton, Tenn., and Eleanor Pullen, Oak Ridge; two sisters, Ada June Breeding and Ina Breeding, both of Davenport; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday in Oak Ridge with burial Thursday in Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
