James W. Burnette

James Woodrow "Jim" Burnette, 85, of Bristol Virginia, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Bristol.
He was a retired employee of Sperry Univac with 28 years of service, and a member of the Woodmen of the World.
He was a member of North Bristol Baptist Church and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Virginia Burnette.
Survivors include two daughters, Helen Lilly, Abingdon, and Betty Rector, Bristol Virginia; a son, James David Burnette, Bristol Tennessee; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; five nephews; a great niece; and several cousins.

Dorthula M. Carroll

BIG STONE GAP -- Dorthula M. "Dot" Carroll, 72, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, in Norton Community Hospital.
She was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap, a homemaker and a member of East Stone Gap Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Clinton Carroll; five sons, Robert Morris Carroll, Maryville, Tenn., Gary M. Carroll and Scott Carroll, both of Big Stone Gap, Melvin Gregory Carroll, Whispering Pines, N.C., and Clinton Mark Carroll, Kingsport; four daughters, Mildred Ann Carroll, Roanoke, Cora Sue Leonard, Kingsport, Donna Jean Barnette, Big Stone Gap, and Sharon Denise Carroll, Richmond; two sisters, Easter Adams and Margaret Robinette; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Gilliam Funeral Home, Big Stone Gap, is in charge.

Ronald E. Caudill

WEBER CITY -- The Rev. Ronald E. Caudill, 62, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at his home.
He was a resident of Weber City and the Pastor of the Pennington Gap Church of God.
Survivors include five daughters, Jamie L. Caudill, Fort Myers, Fla., Carmen G. Cotugno, Cape Coral, Fla., Lisa G. Steffey, Wise, Melissa J. Lovin, Kingsport, and R. Hope Rhea, Castalia, Ohio; two sisters, Audrey Thompson, Norton and Charlotte Dickerson, Appomatox, Va.; a brother, Wayne Caudill, Manassas, Va.; and seven grandchildren.
Hagy Funeral Home, Norton, is in charge.

William Coltrane

EMORY, Va. -- William Coltrane, 84, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.
Farris Funeral Service is in charge.

Douglas D. Dodd

DECATUR, Ala. -- Douglas Darlynn Dodd, 86, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, in Parkway Medical Center.
He was a native of Decatur, and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran during World War II.
He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and owned and operated Jervis Foundry for many years.
Survivors include a son, Dustin Dodd, Bristol Tennessee; and four grandchildren.
Roselawn Funeral Home, Decatur, is in charge.

Charmie S. Gross

BLUFF CITY -- Charmie Lucille Shaffer Gross, 81, of 162 Old Silver Grove Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at her home.
She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County.
She attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was the widow of C.W. "Doc" Gross.
Survivors include five daughters, Lakie Rowena Taylor, Nokomis, Fla., Margie Laeuna Case, Nell Chapman, Gerry Dollar and Christine Dollar, all of Bluff City; four sons, Cecil O. Gross, Kenneth A. Gross, Dallas Gross and Mike Gross, all of Bluff City; 34 grandchildren; and several great and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

Henry H. Hoofnagle

ATKINS, Va. -- Henry Hamilton Hoofnagle, 83, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a lifelong member of Davis Memorial United Methodist Church.
He was retired from Brunswick Corporation after 43 years of service and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of American Legion Post No. 18 and Francis Marion VFW Post NO. 4667.
He was a past president of Smyth County Farm Bureau and a former member of Smyth County Board of Supervisors.
He had raised horses, cattle and beagles all of his life.
Survivors include his wife, Reba P. Hoofnagle; a daughter, Linda Hoofnagle Logan, Atkins; a son, Joseph H. Hoofnagle, Atkins; a sister, Ann H. Cline, Rural Retreat, Va.; two brothers, James E. Hoofnagle, Sarasota, Fla., and Dr. William S. Hoofnagle, Daytona Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Seaver- Brown Funeral Service is in charge.

Savannah E. Hurd

CASTLEWOOD -- Savannah E. Hurd, 85, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at her home.
She was the widow of George W. Hurd.
She was a lifelong resident of Russell County and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three daughters, Louise Hartsock, Nickelsville, Va., Mary Davis, Castlewood, and Agnes Horne, Durham, N.C.; seven sons, Garland Hurd, Roger Hurd and Nathan Hurd, all of Castlewood, Eddie Hurd, Donnie Hurd and Jackie Hurd, all of Lebanon, and Ronnie Hurd, St. Paul; 25 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Lebanon Funeral Home is in charge.

Katherine E. Jackson

HURLEY, Va. -- Katherine Estep Jackson, 73, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at the home of a son in Fenton, Mich.
She was a native of Dickenson County and had lived in Buchanan County most of her life.
She was a member of the Kelsa Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.
She was a former assistant cook for Heritage Hall Nursing Home and was a homemaker.
She was the widow of Glenn "Buddy" Jackson.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Juda Dorff, Linden, Mich., Mrs. Nadine Justus, Hurley, and Mrs. Bolena Coleman, Fenton; four sons, Rabon Jackson, Holly, Mich., Alton Jackson, Linden, Danny Dale Jackson, Hurley, and Eddie Glenn Jackson, Fenton; three sisters, Margaret Greer, Cedar Bluff, Va., Shirley Daugherty, Cocoa, Fla., and Lula Mae Dotson, Paw Paw, Ky.; two brothers, John Henry Estep Jr., Stopover, Ky., and J.C. Estep, Hurley; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Claude Lasley

LEBANON -- Claude Lasley, 75, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at his home.
He was a lifelong resident of Russell County and a retired foreman with Virginia Department of Transportation after 47 years of service.
He was a charter member of Hansonville Baptist Church serving as assistant pastor, Sunday school superintendent and trustee.
He was also a member of Russell County Gideon Camp.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Rosa Monk Lasley, Lebanon; five daughters, Virginia Hubbard, Richmond, Jean Davis and Geneva Baldwin, both of Abingdon, Patricia Beavers, Honaker, and Barbara Bailey, Lebanon; three sons, Bernard Lasley, Abingdon, Claude A. Laslie and Jeff Lasley, both of Lebanon; three sisters, Mrs. Edith Hughes and Betty Robinson, both of Lebanon, and Mary Hess, Spartanburg, S.C.; three brothers, Earl Lasley, Wheeling, W.Va., and Robert Lasley Jr. and George Lasley, both of Lebanon.
Russell County Funeral Home, Lebanon, is in charge.
