APPEL
Ernest Wesley Appel, 88, of Richmond, died peacefully at his home following an extended illness on Wednesday, September 25, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances Stiff Appel; one daughter, Shirley Appel Way and her husband, Dr. Brady Way; three grandsons, David Wesley Way, Michael Cole Way and Brian Edward Way; a great-granddaughter, Lillian Frances Way; and a family friend, Petra Nurminen Tabry and her husband, Antoine Tabry. He was an active member of Northminster Baptist Church, which he joined in 1923. He was a member of the Appel Sunday School Class, a deacon and served in many capacities over the years. Mr. Appel was a Navy veteran of WWII, serving in both the European and Pacific theaters. He graduated from John Marshall High School and received his mechanical engineering degree from VPI. He was a bridge engineer for the Virginia Department of Highways for 11 years. Then he was associated with the plumbing and heating industry for over 35 years as a partner and later as President of Taylor, Lipscomb and Appel, until his retirement in 1978. He was a member of Fitzgerald Lodge No. 299 A.F.&A.M. for over 60 years. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 East Laburnum Avenue. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Northminster Baptist Church, Westwood and Moss Side Avenues, with interment to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. BELLFLOWER
John H. Bellflower III, 59, of Richmond, passed away after a long illness September 24, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Sue C. Bellflower; son, John H. Bellfower IV and his wife, Patricia C. Bellflower; grandson, John H. Bellflower V; and former wife, Linda M. Bellflower. Mr. Bellflower was a member of Bethany Christian Church. William Lynwood Burton, age 90, of Amelia died on September 26, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Irene; sons, William Jr. of Warrenton and Wayne of Norfolk; and two grandchildren, Rene Burton and Daryl Burton. James Carlton Conway Sr., 70, of Richmond, departed this life to be with the Lord September 24, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Barbara Ann Conway; his four children, Jimmie and Danny Conway, Joy Asbery and Tina Maxim; four grandchildren, J.C., Johnny, Nicolas and Heather; and his brother, John T. Agnes Peaches Corbitt, 90, of Richmond, departed this life Thursday, September 26, 2002. She was preceded in death by her sons, James P. and Wallace Corbitt; and daughters, Linda and Vanessa Corbitt. She is survived by her sons, Robert, Charles, Eddie and Earl Corbitt; daughters, Betty Bennington, Marsha Murphy, Barbara Prater and Dorothy Sheffield; 29 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. CRANMER
Jean P. Cranmer, age 73, of Brooklyn Trail, Franklin, N.C. passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2002 in a local nursing home. She was a native of DeKalb County, Georgia, a daughter of the late James Romaine and Anniebell Feazel Parnell. Robert and Jean resided in Richmond, Virginia for 30 years, where she retired from the Richmond, Virginia IRS, working as a Customer Service Representative. She was a member of St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church and a member of the Franklin Area Civitan Club. She is survived by her husband of fifty-two years, Robert Cranmer; two sons, Scott Cranmer of Cedar Hill, Texas and Corey Cranmer of College Park, Maryland; two sisters, Elizabeth Poole of Franklin, N.C. and Barbara Engler of Murray Hill, N.J.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 28th at 11 a.m. at St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church with The Rev. Jim Fouts and The Rev. Sherron O. Geiger officiating. Joan Dorothea Munch Croxton, 68, of Kilmarnock, daughter of the late John and May Munch and widow of Willie Newton Croxton Jr. passed away September 25, 2002. She is survived by a sister, Jean M. White of Midlothian; two special nieces, Frances Edwards and Peggy George; several cousins and numerous friends. She was a member of Morattico Baptist Church, Kilmarnock Rescue Squad Auxillary and Crime Stoppers. Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock. Departed this life September 23, 2002, Mrs. Linda E. Davis of 3017 Waddington Drive. She was preceded in death by her parents, James W. and Lucy T. Evans. She is survived by a devoted friend, Ezzard C. Williams Sr.; four sisters, Barbara Crawford, Charlene C. Harris, Velet Y. Evans and Margaret Higgs; one brother, James D. Evans; two aunts, Dorothy Barbee and Willie Mae Washington; one uncle, John Barbee; several nieces, nephews and cousins and other relatives and friends. FOGG
Rev. James Matthew Fogg passed away at his home in Philippi, West Virginia, on Wednesday evening, September 25, 2002. He was 91. Rev. Fogg was born May 30, 1911 in Camden, New Jersey, the only son of the late Clarence Fox Fogg and Florence Mae Long Fogg. On October 25, 1941 he married Ida Lucille Lawrence, who preceded him in death on April 24, 2002. Surviving are two sons, James Lawrence and Gerald Matthew; and one daughter, Sarah Lucille Fogg; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Rev. Fogg was a graduate of Camden High School, the University of Richmond, Crozer Theological Seminary and West Virginia University graduate school. He was a civil engineer for the New Jersey State Highway Department and the Army Corps of Engineers in Panama. He was ordained to the ministry on May 30, 1937 and served pastorates in Virginia and West Virginia from 1944 to 1959 before joining the faculty of Alderson-Broaddus College where he taught pre-engineering, physical science, math, astronomy and Spanish. He maintained connection with previous careers as a land surveyor, interim pastor and preacher. Retiring in 1976, he took several leading roles in the Covered Bridge Playhouse summer theater. Rev. Fogg was an active member of the Philippi Baptist Church for more than forty years and taught the "Tie That Binds" men's class. Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home from 4 to 9 p.m. today, September 27. He will lie in state at the Philippi Baptist Church from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, September 28. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Rev. Fogg will be buried Sunday next to his wife in Windsor, Virginia. Memorial gifts may be made to DebRA of America, Inc., in care of Philippi Baptist Church.

HERNDON
Roger Napoleon Herndon, 80, passed away September 25, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marguerite W. Herndon; one sister, Margaret Hurst; and several nieces and nephews. Roger served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe. On December 16, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, he was picking up the wounded on the front lines and was captured by the Germans and taken to Stalag 13-C. Later, he was transferred to a work camp where they worked the prisoners 12 hours a day for six days a week and eight hours on Sunday. Near the end of the war, the Germans marched them to keep them ahead of the allied forces. One night they stopped at a farmhouse and they slept in the barn. The next morning the German guards were gone. The American Army picked them up and returned them to Camp Lucky Strike in France for health care and uniforms for their return to the United States. Roger served as chaplain of the American Legion Poast 137 for 17 years and the 11th District American Legion for 16 years. He also served as chaplain of the American Legion Luncheon Club for as long as he was able. He was a member of 40/8 and a hospital volunteer at McGuire Veterans Hospital. He was a member of the Denny Landrum Chapter of the American Ex-P.O.W., where he served as chaplain for 10 years, and was also chaplain of the State Chapter of Ex-P.O.W. for three years. He was a member of the DAV. He was a member of the Westover Hills United Methodist Church and a member of the Usher Association. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Westover Hills United Methodist Church followed by interment in Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 137 or Westover Hills United Methodist Church.
