NORA, Va. -- Daisy M. Blackstone, 81, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Ridgecrest Manor, Duffield.
She was a native of Dickenson County, a member of Phillips Chapel Church and the widow of Owen Blackstone.
Survivors include a daughter, Mildred "Midge" Stanley, Roanoke; three sons, Sidney Blackstone, Conyers, Ga., Don Blackstone, Clintwood, and Roger Blackstone, Nora; a brother, Wilson McCoy, Roanoke; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary C. Bowes
LEBANON -- Mrs. Mary Cook Bowes, 80, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in a Lebanon Hospital. She was a native of Russell County and had resided in Lebanon for the past 10 years, moving there from Chesapeake, Va. She was the widow of Oakey M. Bowes.
Survivors include two stepdaughters, Mrs. Treva Harmon and Mrs. Dorothy Black, both of Bluefield, W.Va.; three stepsons, Milton R. Bowes, Edgar H. Bowes and William L. Bowes, all of Chesapeake; two sisters, Rachel Ball and Effie Karsoner, both of Northeast, Md.; five brothers, Basil Cook, Alpena, Mich., Taze Cook, Madison Heights, Mich., Noah Cook Jr., Cleveland, Va., Norman Cook, Oakwood, Va., and Millard Cook, Honaker; a granddaughter; 19 step-grandchildren; 34 step-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren.

Johnson CITY -- Mrs. Hope
Johnson Rogers Casteel, 80, of 400 N. Boone St., formerly of 2715 Cherokee Road, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in Asbury Center.
She was a native of Clinchfield, Va., had been a resident of
Johnson City for most of her life, and was retired from Unisys Corp., Blountville.
She was a charter member of Cherokee United Methodist Church and a member of Prime Timers Sunday school Class.
Survivors include a son, Larry Rogers,
Johnson City; two sisters, Faith Johnson,
Johnson City, and June Israel, Roanoke; a grandson, Larry Rogers,
Johnson City; a granddaughter, Deborah R. Blankenship,
Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews.

Frazier J. Cochran
CASTLEWOOD -- Frazier Joseph Cochran died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and a retired employee of CSX Railroad.
He was a volunteer member of the Dante Fire Department for many years and a past president and lifetime member of the PTA. He attended Hamlin Baptist church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Cochran; two daughters, Lorraine Turner, Castlewood, and Sue Kennedy, Wise; five brothers, Ralph Cochran and Danny Cochran, both of Pounding Mill, Jerry Cochran, Cedar Bluff, Robert Cochran, North Tazewell, and John Cochran, Port Charlotte, Fla.; a grandson; and a granddaughter.

Thelmona Dingus
CLINTWOOD -- Thelmona Dingus, 77, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Dickenson County Medical Center.
She was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County and a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, Darwin.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Clarence E. Dingus; five sons, Johnny Dingus, Kat Dingus and Donnie Dingus, all of Clintwood, David Dingus, Abingdon, and Eddie Shifflett, Manassas; four daughters, Brenda Wallen, Clintwood, Shelia Waggie and Debbie Welch, both of Roanoke, and Sharon Taylor, Stedman, N.C.; three brothers, Homer D. Buchanan and Elwood Buchanan, both of Clintwood, and J.C. Buchanan, Coeburn; three sisters, Airebell Dotson, Clintwood, Alice Vencil, Coeburn, and Wilma Large, Manassas; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

VALLEY HEAD, Ala. -- Jess C. Ferguson, 92, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Birmingham, Ala.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma
Williams Ferguson.
Survivors include three sons, Lonnie Ferguson, Henagar, Ala., the Rev. Leonard Ferguson, Castlewood, and Larry Ferguson, Wildwood, Ga.; two daughters, Jean Sexton, Valley Head, Clara Jordan, Birmingham; a brother, Riley Ferguson, Pisgah, Ala.; two sisters, Hazel Bradford, South Pittsburg, Tenn., and Grace Smith, Pisgah; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Sunday in Alabama.

WISE -- Jerry H. Gilliam, 62, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a former coal operator and owner of Gilliam Discount Store, Wise, for the past ten years. He attended the Duncan Gap Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Clara Gaye Porter Gilliam; three sons, Ricky Wayne Gilliam, Jerry Scott Gilliam and Dale Martin "Marty" Gilliam, all of Wise; two brothers, Noah S. Gilliam, Mountain City, Tenn., and Joe Gilliam, Farmville, Va.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

LAUREL BLOOMERY, Tenn. -- Albert R. Greer, 72, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in
Johnson City Medical Center.
He was a native of
Green Cove, Va., and had lived in
Johnson County, Tenn., for the past 23 years. He was formerly a school bus driver for the Washington County Virginia School System and an employee of Columbus McKinnon Corp. until his retirement.
He was a member of the
Green Cove Baptist Church, where he served on the deacon board and sang in the church choir. He was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene Walls Greer.
Survivors include a daughter, Margie Proffitt,
Green Cove; a son, Randy Greer, Laurel Bloomery; his step-mother, Pauline Greer, Troutdale, Va.; four sisters, Opal Greer,

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Virginia Bush Horton, 81, formerly of Big Stone Gap, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Jefferson County Nursing Home.
She was the widow of Hoyt H. Horton.
Survivors include a daughter, Zelma Allen, Jefferson City; a brother, Elmo Bush, Kingsport; seven grandchildren, Kim Seals and Marty Allen, both of Jefferson City, Pam Collins and Sherry Horton, both of Appalachia, Chuck Horton, Penney Perry and Sabra Meade, all of Big Stone Gap; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

HONAKER -- Mrs. Edith "Ma" James, 86, of Route 2, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at the home of her daughter in Venia, Va.
She was a native of Venia, where she had lived until 1960 when she moved to Honaker.
She was a member of Venia's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and attended Gent's Chapel in Honaker where she was a youth class teacher for 30 years.
She was a member of the Countiss Rebekah Lodge No. 32, Honaker, and the widow of Frank James.
Survivors include four daughters, Martha McGlothlin, Lucille Austin and Nilah Dillard, all of Honaker, and Fayrene Rasnake, Davenport; two sons, Dallas James and Darrell James, both of Honaker; four sisters, Dolly Austin, Mint McGlothlin and Hazel Combs, all of Honaker, and Ruth Hughes,
Johnson City; two brothers, Ralph Hess, Lebanon, and Arthur Hess, Abingdon; 29 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
