GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Samuel Lee Garrett, 70, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, in Tryon, N.C.
He was a native of Elk Garden, Va., and a U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. of World War II and the Korean War.
He was a Mason.
Survivors include four daughters, Ann Garrett Forrester, Saltville, Linda Garrett Adkins, Roanoke, Gina Garrett Gossenreiter, Tryon, and Lisa Garrett, Greenville, S.C.; a sister, Eula Mae Wise, New Albany, Ind.; two brothers, Clifford H. Garrett, Centre, Ala., and Carrall W. Garrett, Sky Gusty, W.Va.; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Loretta P. Kilby
MARION -- Loretta Pickle Kilby, 73, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was the widow of Lee Junior Kilby and a retired employee from the Town of Marion Recreation Department, with 25 years of service. She was a charter member of the Marion Lifesaving Crew Auxiliary and a member of the Marion First Church of God.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Kilby Cress, Marion; two sons, Danny Lee Kilby, Chilhowie, and Keith
Foster Kilby, Marion; her mother, Gertrude Pickle, Glade Spring; two sisters, Charlotte Gentry, Marion, and Frances Lester, Glade Spring; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

ABINGDON -- Mrs. Cleatis Webb Leonard, 83, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Survivors include two sons, Billy D. Leonard and E.W. "Dub" Leonard Jr., both of Abingdon; a daughter, S. Jean McCall, Abingdon; two brothers, Gale Webb, Abingdon, and Charles Webb, Glade Spring; a sister, Juanita Gobble, Bristol; ten grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

GLADE HILL, Va. -- Mrs. Ethel Mayes Long died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at the home of her son in Glade Hill.
She was a native of Surry County, N.C., and the widow of Winfred C. Long.
Survivors include two sons, David R. Long, Glade Hill, and Bill Long, Mocksville, N.C.; two daughters, Mrs. Jack (Margaret) Martin, Bristol Tennessee, and Mrs. Ray (Rachel) del Campo, Gretna, Va.; three brothers, Everette Mayes, North Wilkesboro, N.C., Edward Mayes, Joplin, Mo., and Eldean Mayes, Roanoke; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Tommy L. Luttrell
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Tommy Louis Luttrell, 55, of 1250 Woodcrest Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at his home.
He was a native of Bristol Virginia, had lived in Daytona Beach, since 1982, and was a graduate of Tennessee High School and East Tennessee State University.
Mr. Luttrell was employed with the National Distributing Company, of Daytona Beach, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietname War.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Bill (Jane) Crow, Elizabethton.
Services will be conducted at a later date.

Grant R. Madison
BLUFF CITY -- Grant Reed Madison, 55, of 272 Egypt Road, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at his home.
He was a lifelong resident of Bluff City and was of the Protestant faith. Survivors include two sons, Randy Washington, Bluff City, and Grant L. Madison III, Virginia; a daughter, Ms. Tracy Madison, Bristol Tennessee; two brothers, Lawrence Madison and Mark Madison, both of Bluff City; a sister, Mrs. Evelyn M. Dickerson, Jonesborough; an aunt; an uncle; and several nephews and nieces.

Kathleen F. Phipps
GLADE SPRING -- Mrs. Kathleen Frye Phipps, 78, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol Tennessee.
She was the widow of William H. "Buckeye" Phipps, and a member of Glade Spring First Church of God.
Survivors include a son, Wade Phipps, Glade Spring; two daughters, Teresa Doane, Glade Spring, and Peggy Hess, Hansonville, Md.; two brothers, Tommy Frye, Tannersville, Va., and A.D. Frye, Meadowview; a sister, Mrs. I.R. Holley, Meadowview; ten grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

RAVEN, Va. -- Charlie Ellis Proffit, 66, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, in Clinch Valley Medical Center, Richlands.
He was a native of West Virginia, had been a resident of the Buchanan County area most of his life, and was a retired coal miner. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Linda Ruddock, Duncanville, Texas; four sons, James E. Proffit, Amarillo, Texas, Kenny Ray Anderson, Oakwood, Franklin Compton and Gregory Proffit, both of Raven; three sisters, Louise Anderson, Vansant, Maxine Kinder and Gracie Anderson, both of Oakwood; two brothers, Ervin Proffit, Oakwood, and Tommy Lee Proffit, Honaker; and seven grandchildren.

William D. Rasnake
MENDOTA -- Mr. William David Rasnake, 61, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at the home of his son.
He was a native of Dickenson County, had lived most of his life in Lebanon and Abingdon, and was a member of the First Assembly Church of God, Bristol, Va.
Survivors include four sons, Michael David Rasnake, Mendota, William Brett Rasnake and James Brian Rasnake, both of Abingdon, and Gary Keith Rasnake, Meadowview; two daughters, Pamela Mae Woodard, Damascus, and Anita Christene Montigue, Beckley, W.Va.; four brothers, Dentin Dewel Rasnake, Madison Heights, Mich., Graham Kenneth Rasnake, Clyde Elmer Rasnake and James Phillip Rasnake, all of Abingdon; four sisters, Mrs. Billy (June) Lester, Mrs. Gary (Lynn) Thompson, and Mrs. Charlie (Annette) Branch, all of Abingdon, and Mrs. Ray (Nadine) Wagner, Danville, Va.; and 11 grandchildren.

Samuel Fields Shankel, 83, of Shankel Mill Road, Bristol Tennessee, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Joe G. Shankle Jr.
RICHMOND -- Joe G. "Junior" Shankle Jr., died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident.
He was a native of Bristol Virginia, had resided in Richmond for 30 years, and was an member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
Mr. Shankle was manager of one of downtown Richmond's largest cafeterias, and president of the GSA for 15 years.
He was an active advocate for the blind in federal and state legislature, president of the Virginia Blind Merchants Association, and was instrumental in the introduction of the first Braille typewriter and the first talking cash register.
He was a member of the Lions Club, Jaycees and numerous civic organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Roberta H. Shankle; a daughter, Mitzi Shaw; two sons, U.S. Army Spec. Joseph G. "Jay" Shankle III, and Jeff B. Shankle; three sisters, Lorene Byington, Nancy Mitchell and Joyce Nixon; a brother, Robert Shankle; a grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

James Shultz
STONEGA, Va. -- James Shultz, 84, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in Norton Community Hospital.
He was a native of Calvin, moved to Philadelphia in 1947, returning to Stonega in 1999.
He was a coal miner and was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include a son, James "Jim" Shultz, Stonega; a daughter, Barbara Bowen, Williamstown, Ky.; a sister, Barbara Koberstien, Philadelphia; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
