ABINGDON -- Mr. Dean H. Herald, 69, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, residing in the Brumley Gap community. He was a member of the Chestnut Grove Community Church, where he served in the choir.
He was a member of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Board and the Virginia Tobacco Council. He was employed for 50 years with Cozart Tobacco Warehouses and retired as floor manager. He was also employed as a fertilizer dealer with Lebanon Chemical Company for 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Reynolds Herald; two daughters, Mrs. Jackie (Tracey) Reynolds, Abingdon, and Mrs. Jeffrey (Rebecca) VanDyke, Simpsonville, S.C.; a brother, Paul Dempsey Herald, Knoxville; three grandchildren; 15 nieces; and 17 nephews.

R.L. Hoffman
MARION -- R.L. "Bob" Hoffman, 59, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a native of Grant, Va., retired in 1991 as a project engineer with the Virginia Department of Transportation with more than 35 years of service. After retirement, he became a fulltime cattle farmer in Grayson County.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church for more than 30 years, where he served as an usher.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Barton Hoffman; two sons, Lance Hoffman and O'Donna Hoffman; his mother, Alta
Smith Hoffman, Grant; a brother, Charles R. Hoffman, Raleigh, N.C.; a granddaughter; several aunts and uncles; and several nieces and nephews.

Annie L. Hogston
BIG ROCK, Va. -- Annie Laurie Varney Hogston, 81, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in Buchanan General Hospital.
She was a native of Pike County, Ky., and had been a resident of Buchanan County most of her life. She was a member of the New Salem Old Regular Baptist Church for 53 years.
She was a homemaker, the widow of her first husband, Carl Clarence Hogston, and her second husband, Wilford Blair.
Survivors include four daughters, Joyce Ann Coleman, Bonnie Sue Slone and Melster Hogston, all of Big Rock, and Barbara Jean Chapman, Rowe, Va.; a foster daughter, Molly Hall, Big Rock; three sons, Onis Ray Hogston and Paul Quincy Hogston, both of Grundy, and Cecil Cladis Hogston, Hurley; 21 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Oliver Z. Huff
SALTVILLE -- Mr. Oliver Zane Huff, 66, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
He was a retired U.S. Army sergeant, 5th Special Forces
Green Beret and a paratrooper, serving two tours in the Vietname War, and the Korean War. He was the recipient of three Purple Hearts and the Distinguished Pistol Shot Award. He was a member of the Saltville VFW "Hardy Roberts" Post No. 7328.
He was a retired supervisor with the Amtrak Railroad.
Survivors include seven sons, Dennis Huff, Ohio, Alan Huff, Covington, Va., Bill Huff, Indianapolis, Jack Huff, Greenville, S.C., David Huff and Tony Huff, both of Fairland, Ind., and Jeff Huff, Saltville; two daughters, Marie Williams, Texas, and Cindy Huff Stewart, Saltville; two brothers, Ed Huff, Texas, and Denver Huff, California; two sisters, Verna Huff and Opal Nickels, both of Texas; 26 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Howard J. Little
ABINGDON -- Mr. Howard J. Little, 71, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He had lived most of his life in Washington County and was a member of Abingdon Bible Church.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975, and was retired from Westinghouse.
Survivors include his wife, Billie Jo Little; two daughters, Kathy Davis, Kingsport, and Teresa Edwards, Abingdon; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Sandra Erma McCracken, 46, of 23273 Mary's Chapel Road, Bristol, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and was employed for 22 years with the Sheltered Workshop at Opportunities Unlimited. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her mother, Audra McCracken, Bristol Virginia; three brothers, Randall McCracken, Jeff McCracken and Mark McCracken Sr., all of Bristol Virginia; three nephews; and a niece.

VANSANT -- Rice O'quin, 70, of the Paw Paw section, Route 1, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at his home.
He was a native of Buchanan County, a retired miner and was of the Baptist faith.

DETROIT -- Tackett Stidham Jr., 73, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, in Vencor Hospital, Lincoln Park, Mich.
He had lived and worked in Detroit for many years, retired from Chrysler Corporation and was a Christian. He was a U.S. Army Airborne veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a sister, Almeda Mills, Marion; and several cousins.

Gary D. Anderson
GATE CITY -- Gary Dean Anderson, 55, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
He was a native of Kingsport, and owner and operator of S&G Labor. He was a member of Morrison City Christian Church for 41 years.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Puckett Anderson; two sons, Gary Scott Anderson, Blountville, and Daniel Rhea Anderson, Kingsport; a stepdaughter, Kellina Marie Tipton, of the home; his mother, Gaynell Potter Anderson, Church Hill; a sister, Mrs. Conley (Carol) Smith, Kingsport; two brothers, Robert Perry Anderson, Greensboro, N.C., and Rudy Anderson, Church Hill; and several nieces and nephews.
