GRUNDY -- Laverna Elizabeth "Lizzie" Tackett Mullins Hess, 80, of the Looney's Creek section, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, in Buchanan General Hospital.
She was a native of Pike County, Ky., a lifelong resident of Grundy, and a former employee of Ramey's Dairy Bar. She was of the Holiness faith.
She was the widow of her first husband, Auty Stanford Mullins, and her second husband, Alden Hess.
Survivors include seven daughters, Mrs. Kyle (Judy) Stiltner and Mrs. Joseph (Kelpia) Simmons, both of Grundy, Mrs. Ira Ralph (Helen) Clevinger, Harman, Va., Mrs. Jack (Millie) Hackney, Abingdon, Inez Ramey, Vansant, Mrs. Frank (Gerri) Blacina, Loraine, Ohio, and Paula Mullins, Hillsville; three sons, Dallas Hess, Grundy, Leonard Hess, Tampa, Fla., and Auty Mullins, Cement, Okla.; a brother, John "Sterling" Holt, Grand Rapids, Minn.; 28 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

LEBANON -- John Harmon "Whitie" Holmes, 79, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, in Russell County Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Russell County and a member of the Spring City Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Olene Holmes; a sister, Mrs. Mae Sword, Chilhowie; three brothers, Earl Holmes and Charlie Holmes, both of Lebanon, and Denny Holmes, Topeka, Kan.

MARION -- Bertha Blevins Hopkins, 74, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was a lifetime member of the Cleghorn Valley Baptist Church and the widow of William Keith Hopkins.
Survivors include two sons, Alex Hopkins, Atlanta, and Dr. Phillip Hopkins, Marion; three sisters, Nancy Martin, Florida, Polly Murray and Pearl Stamper, both of Chilhowie; five brothers, John Robert Blevins and William F. "Bill" Blevins, both of Seven Mile Ford, Va., the Rev. Charles Blevins, Chesil Blevins and Lee Blevins, all of Chilhowie; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles R. Jennings
MARION -- Charles Raymond Jennings, 82, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, in Livermore, Calif.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran and an aviation machinist's mate first class. He worked as a building inspector for the Oakland Unified School District for ten years.
He was a lifetime member of the Masons, a member of the Royal Arch Masons of California, the Castlewood Royal Arch Chapter No. 54, Castlewood, the Cryptic Masons of California, the Free and Accepted Masons of California, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, the AAHMES Temple and was a 32nd degree Mason.
Mr. Jennings was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Jennings.
Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Jean Jennings, Carlsbad, Calif.; a son, Charles Jennings, Lodi, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

BIG STONE GAP -- Charles Frederick "Freddie" Luntsford, 28, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center.
He attended the First Pentecostal Church, Big Stone Gap, was the mascot for the DARE Program, in Big Stone Gap, and was employed by the Town of Big Stone Gap.
Survivors include his wife, Melissa Luntsford; his parents, Fred and Gail Luntsford, Appalachia, and James and Lois Swain, Big Stone Gap; a sister, Michelle Luntsford, Big Stone Gap; two stepbrothers, Tony Turner, Atlanta, and Kenneth Joyner, Appalachia; a stepsister, Tabitha Swain, Pennington Gap; his paternal grandparents, Fred and June Luntsford, Appalachia; his maternal grandparents, Charlie and Majil Maggard, Big Stone Gap; and his great-grandmother, Maggie Lawson, Big Stone Gap.

Grady McMurray
The Rev. Grady McMurray, 71, of 179 Bullock Hollow Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, at his home.
He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, a U.S. Army veteran and was preceded in death by his first wife, Zella McMurray.
He was founder of the Full Gospel Fellowship Church and has pastored there for 31 years.
Survivors include his wife, Alice McMurray; a daughter, Ann Brown, Charlotte, N.C.; a foster daughter, Betty J. Roark, Bristol Tennessee; a foster son, Bill Witt, Bristol Tennessee; a stepdaughter, De Nelda Madina, Norwalk, Iowa; a stepson, Darrell West, Indianola, Iowa; a sister, Ruby McMurray, Kingsport; three brothers, James Hershall McMurray and Walker McMurray Jr., both of Blountville, and Virgil P. McMurray, Hilton, Va.; ten grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a native of Washington County, Va., and had lived in Bristol for the past few years, and was of the Baptist faith.

She was a native of Wise County, a homemaker, and a member of Union Street Baptist Church.
She was the widow of Henry Macel Stallard.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Melvin Lee (Mae S. "Tiny") Warren, Charlotte, N.C.; six sons, James E. Stallard, Morrison City, Va., Glen Stallard, Larry W. Stallard, Cecil H. Stallard, Marcel R. Stallard and Leslie Stallard, all of Kingsport; a sister, Mae Jones, Richlands; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Lucy Greer Stromlund, 90, of the 3500 block of Byrn Brae Drive, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998 at her home.
She was a native of Boone, N.C., and was the widow of Dr. Ernest Victor Stromlund Jr.
She was a member of Indian River Baptist Church where she had formerly taught Sunday school.
She was past president of the Women's Missionary Union and a member of the Merry Makers Senior Citizens.
She had also served as past president of the Virginia High School PTA in Bristol Virginia.
Survivors include a daughter, Eleanor L. Steele, Virginia Beach; two sisters, Dixie Slough and Myrtle Canty, both of Kingsport; three grandchildren, LuAnn Robertson, Newbury Park, Calif., Pam Whitaker, Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Victor Steele, Simi Valley, Calif.; eight great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law; and a sister-in-law.
