Charlean Padgett

ST. PAUL -- Charlean Padgett, 66, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, in Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn.
She was a native of Erwin, Tenn., had lived in Castlewood and St. Paul for the past 31 years and was a member of Midway Church in Coeburn.
Survivors include her husband, Deward "Mack" Padgett; two sons, Gary Padgett of Castlewood, and Walt Padgett of St. Paul; her mother, Belle Hensley of Erwin, Tenn.; a sister, Wilma Stockton of Erwin; a brother, R.H. Hensley of Kingsport; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Castlewood Funeral Home is in charge.

Howard H. Poore

Howard Henry Poore, 90, of Woodhaven Retirement Living and Cedar Lawn Convalescence Center, formerly of 13429 Wallace Pike, Bristol, Va., died Saturday, March 6, 1999, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Sullivan County, Tenn., a retired employee of TVA, and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph Clyde Poore of Bluff City, and Dr. Henry Wayne Poore of Flagstaff, Ariz.; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge.

Jim B. Pruitt

MARION -- Jim Buchanan "Buck" Pruitt, 65, died Saturday March 6, 1999, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a native of Rich Valley, Va., and was retired from Virginia House Furniture with over 20 years of service.
He was a member of the Liberty Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Pruitt; five daughters, Bessie Royston of Newton, N.C., Nannie Waters of Box Springs, Ga., Julie Shupe of Marion, Alice Buchanan and Julie Buchanan, both of Chilhowie; a son, David Pruitt of Chilhowie; three stepsons, David Olinger, Dewayne Olinger and Steve Taylor; four sisters, Louise Buchanan of Rich Valley, Mary Armstrong of Marion, Pearl Myers of Indiana, and Betty Grise of Alexandria, Va.; three brothers, James E. Dan Pruitt and Paul Pruitt, both of Rich Valley, and Wiley Pruitt; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Bradley's Funeral Home of Marion is in charge.

Kathleen C. Roberts

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Kathleen Clisso Roberts, 74, died Friday, March 5, 1999, in Port Charlotte.
She was a native of Norton, had resided in Florida for 33 years and was the widow of Cecil Roberts.
Survivors include a daughter, Thelma Jean Barnes of Port Charlotte; a son, Elmer Cecil Roberts of Port Charlotte; four sisters, Josie Crabtree of Charleston, S.C., Connie Day and Sharon Canales, both of Wise, and Faye Frazier of Acworth, Ga.; five brothers, Frank Clisso and Hobert Clisso, both of Norton, Clyde Clisso and Charles Clisso, both of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Don Clisso of Wise; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial will be held Tuesday in Punta Gorda, Fla.

Sarah Shumate

TROUTDALE, Va. -- Sarah Shumate, 95, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, at her home.
She was a native of Grayson County and had lived in Smyth County, Va., for the past 65 years. She was a member of the St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Konnarock, Va., and was the widow of Kenneth F. Shumate.
Survivors include five daughters, Ruby Waddell, Lillian Hayes and Emma Moffett, all of Troutdale, Ruth Epright of Pottstown, Pa., and Fontella Richardson of Rugby, Va.; three sons, J.L. Shumate of Shady Valley, Tenn., Loren Shumate and Lonnie Shumate, both of Troutdale; a sister, Mae Shumate of Troutdale; 22 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Johnson Funeral Home in Damascus is in charge.

Lynn Sparks

SALEM, Va. -- Lynn Sparks, 81, died Sunday, March 7, 1999 in Salem Health & Rehabilitation Center in Salem.
Akard Funeral Home is in charge.

Harry V. Boyd

MEADOWVIEW -- Harry V. Boyd, 75, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Washington County and had served with the civilian Conservation Corps.
He was a heavy equipment mechanic and had been employed with Talbert-Marks Construction Company in Clarksville, Va., and Vecellio-Grogan Construction Company in Beckley, W.Va.
Survivors include two sons, Harry L. Boyd of Amma, W.Va., and Steve A. Boyd of Goodview, Va.; a daughter, Brenda Lawson of Abingdon; a brother, John Boyd of Saltville; a sister, Cletis Dishman of Glade Spring; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Farris Funeral Service of Abingdon is in charge of arrangements.

Mary E. Boardwine

SALTIVLLE -- Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Boardwine, 88, died Monday, March 8, 1999, in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, Va.
D.R. Henderson Funeral Home is in charge.

Andrew Cameron

UNICOI, Tenn. -- Andrew Cameron, 43, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at his home.
He was a native of Doncaster, England, and had lived in the United States for 17 years.
He was a former employee of American Long Wall in Abingdon and Exide Corporation in Bristol.
At the time of his death, he was employed by Carl Gregory Dodge in Johnson City.
Survivors include his daughter, Katie Cameron of Bristol Virginia; his mother, Joan Cameron of Doncaster; a sister, Jean Oldroyd of Doncaster; and a brother, Neil Cameron of Frome, England.
Oakley-Cook Funeral Home is in charge.

John C. Hawk Jr.

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Dr. John Chrisman Hawk Jr. died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at his home.
He was a native of Virginia and was raised in China.
He attended St. Johns University in Shanghai, China, and graduated from Emory & Henry College and the University of Virginia Medical School.
He was head of the Cancer Clinic in Charleston for 16 years and a professor of surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina, for 40 years.
He was in private practice at Roper Hospital and St. Francis Xavier Hospital.
He was president of the Charleston County Medical Society and the S.C. Medical Association and a delegate to the American Medical Association for 25 years.
He was in the forefront of medical and surgical oncology research and was for many years a member of the American Cancer Society Board of Directors.
He was a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology and The Head and Neck Society.
He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a member of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church and a member of the Carolina Yacht Club, and the S.C. Historical Society.
He received the Order of the Palmetto in 1991 and both the president's award and the community service award from the S.C. Medical Association.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Dinwiddie Hawk; a sister, Jean Troy of Chattanooga; three sons, Dr. J. Chris Hawk III of Charleston, Dr. William B. Hawk of Albuquerque, N.M., and James A. Hawk of James Island, S.C.; six daughters, Margaret H. O'Brien of Washington, D.C., Nancy H. Hadley of James Island S.C., Penny H. Wilson of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Elizabeth H. Belcher of Roanoke, Sally H. Gibson, of Fryeburg, Va., and Lucy H. Banks of Holden, Mass.; and 22 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday in Charleston.

Ester Honaker

HONAKER -- Mrs. Ester Honaker, 84, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, in a Lebanon hospital.
She was a native of Russell County and a lifelong resident of Russell County.
She was a member of the New Garden Primitive Baptist Church.
She was the widow of Herbert H. Honaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Dean Colley of Honaker; a sister, Bertie Hale of Honaker; four brothers, Guy Musick of Garden Creek, Ralph Musick of Abingdon, Reason Musick of Lebanon and Harless Musick of Rosedale; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Honaker Funeral Home is in charge.

Bill W. Jessee

DRYDEN, Va. -- Bill W. Jessee, 77, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at his home.
He was an active leader in the civic and political affairs of Lee County and served on the Lee County School Board and the Board of Supervisors for many years.
In the 1960s he built the first factory in Lee County. He was instrumental in bringing public water and sewer services to the community of Dryden and also served on the Dryden Water Authority, the P.S.A. Board and was a member of the Board of Directors of Powell Valley National Bank.
He worked on the family farm near Dryden and was a member of the Dryden United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Joy Jessee; two daughters, Sandra Jessee of Big Stone Gap, and Rebecca Jessee of Dryden; a son, Billy Jessee of Dryden; a granddaughter; and a brother, Harold Jessee of Dryden.
Sturgill Funeral Home is in charge.
