Lona V. Dye
SWORDS CREEK -- Lona Vady Dye, 77, of the Maple Gap section, died Monday, March 8, 1999, in a Lebanon hospital.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Swords Creek and attended Harmony Community Church in Belfast.
She was the widow of her first husband, Bill Lee Dye, and her second husband, Dewey Dye.
Survivors include a daughter, Helen Marie Keene of Swords Creek; three sons, Doug Dye of Florence, S.C., Verl William Dye of Bucyrus, Ohio, and Roger Dye of Swords Creek; a sister, Dorothy Hess of Honaker; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Philip W. Ford
GRAY -- Philip W. Ford, 69, died Friday March 5, 1999, at his home.
He founded Improvements Unlimited, LLC, and a business he co-owned with his family. He spent more than 30 years in the home improvements business in Florida and Tennessee. Before founding Improvements Unlimited in
Johnson City, he was a quality assurance inspector for NASA, served in the U.S. Army for nine years.
He was a native of New York City, grew up in Cambridge, Mass., and New Hampshire, and had lived in this region since 1976. He attended Range Technical School in Cambridge and graduated from both signal school and the Adjutant General's School of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Ford was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church, serving on the Board of Directors and numerous committees. He was a barbershopper, singing with choruses in Fort Lauderdale and Dade County, Fla., as well as the Appalachian Espress Barbershop Chorus of the Society for the Preservation and Enjoyment of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. He was an avid supporter of the arts, and peace and justice issues. He worked against racism, local and international hunger, homelessness, nuclear war, weapons of mass destruction and barriers.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Griggs; a son, Kevin Ford; his mother, Edna Ford of Laconia, N.H.; two sisters, Beverly Fortson of Laconia, and Barbara Mazza of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; two nieces and seven nephews.

Robert L. Hall
COEBURN -- Robert Lee Hall, 73, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, in St. Mary's Hospital in Norton.
He was a former employee of Ford Motor Company where he served 15 years, and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Hall was preceded in death by his wife, Verna Ruth Hall.
Survivors include three sons, Harold Estle Hall of Detroit, Charles Ray Hall and Frank Allen Hall, both of Coeburn; three daughters, Judy Lee Hall, Mary Ellen Potter and Linda Faye Potter, all of Coeburn; three sisters, Alice Castle of Coeburn, Marcella
Jones of Marion, N.C., Georgia Vess of Old Fort, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard L. Hartsock
COEBURN -- Richard L. Hartsock, 69, died Monday, March 8, 1999, in Anderson Health Care Center in Gray, Tenn.
He was a lifelong resident of Coeburn.
He was a retired instructor employed with Flatwoods Job Corps and a retired U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and the Vietname War.
Survivors include three aunts, Grace Winchester of Coeburn, Stella Berry of Fredericksburg, Va., and Barbara Dibble of New York; an uncle, Sidney Gibson of Big Stone Gap; and several cousins.

Cecil Herron
EAST STONE GAP, Va. -- Cecil Herron, 76, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, in Tucson, Ariz.
She was a native of Wise County and had lived most of her life in East Stone Gap.
She was a Christian and the widow of Ernest H. Herron.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Beard of Tucson, and Barbara Felkley of Utica, Ohio; a son, Denver Herron of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Lula Waltrip of Newport News, Va.; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn B. Kerr
Evelyn Lucille Bentley Kerr, 62, of 720 Euclid Ave., Bristol, Va., died Sunday, March 7, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a homemaker, had lived most of her life in Battle Creek, Mich., and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a son, Darrell Bentley of Battle Creek; two sisters, Betty Winters of Bristol Virginia, and Pat Kellet of Hickory, N.C.; a brother, Kenneth Bentley of Bristol Tennessee; a granddaughter; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Lewis L. Miller
SWORDS CREEK -- Lewis Lee Miller, 51, of the Clark Valley section, died Monday, March 8, 1999, at his home.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Swords Creek, and was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was a coal miner, formerly employed with Island Creek Coal Company for 21 years, and a member of the UMWA Local 1374. He was a member of the Swords Creek Community Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Ann Miller; a daughter, Tonya Miller of the home; a son, Matthew Miller of the home; his mother, Iowa Perkins Miller of Swords Creek; four sisters, Geneva Taylor and Kay Miller, both of Swords Creek, Melba Cardamone of Columbia, S.C., and Gaye Ramey of Hillsville, Va.; five brothers, Perry Miller of Lebanon, Harley Miller, Clay Miller and Kermit Miller, all of Swords Creek, and Ben Miller of Honaker.

WISE -- Jane Moore, 89, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, in Holston Valley Hospital & Medical Center in Kingsport.
She was the widow of Bruce E. Moore Sr., and attended the Beckner's Chapel in Wise.
Survivors include two sons, Bruce E. "Bill" Moore Jr. of Big Stone Gap, and Ray Moore of Wise; two daughters, Ellen Marie Taylor of Wise, and Emogene
Johnson of Toledo, Ohio; a sister, Ellen Roberson of Wildwood, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Joe Mottern
PINEY FLATS, Tenn. -- Billy Joe Mottern, 62, of 647 Hunting Hill Road, died Monday, March 8, 1999, in
Johnson City Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and a retired custodian at Mary Hughes School in Piney Flats.
Mr. Mottern was a member of Poplar Ridge Christian Church.
He was a member of the M.M. Martin Masonic Lodge No. 547 in Piney Flats, and the Scottish and York Rites, where he was a member of the St. Omer Commandery No. 19 in Bristol. He was a member of the Jericho Shrine Temple and the Order of the Eastern Star, Utopia Chapter No. 27.
He was a member of Piney Flats Ruritan Club.
Survivors include a sister, Betty L. McInturff of
Johnson City; two brothers, Jerry Lynn Mottern and Don Mottern, both of Piney Flats; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great nephews.

Loranzo D. Rowe Jr.
PAYNESVILLE, W.Va. -- Loranzo Dowl Rowe Jr., 82, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
He was a native of Buchanan County, a member of the Summitt Missionary Baptist Church and a retired coal miner, retiring from Consolidate Coal Company, Pocahontas Division. he was a member of Local Union No. 5997.
Mr. Rowe was a corporal in the U.S. Army, a veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theater. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. He was a Carbine expert and received the Driver and Mechanic Badge.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy M. Vance Rowe; two daughters, Mrs. Phillip (Susan) Farmer of Richlands, and Mrs. Jamison J. (Loretta Lynn) Jewell of Westmoreland, Tenn.; three sons, William Stanley Rowe of Springfield, Tenn., Darrell Edward Rowe and Ralph Anthony Rowe, both of Paynesville; a sister, Lydia Rife of Grundy; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
