Starlin M. Davis

KEEN MOUNAIN, Va. -- Starlin McKinley Davis, 80, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, in a Grundy hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a son of the late Dock and Nannie Wade Davis. He was a retired coal operator and trucker. For the past 29 years, he was property supervisor and a funeral assistant at Buchanan Funeral Service. He was of the Pentecostal faith and a member of Odd Fellow Lodge in Grundy.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Ida Ratliff Davis; three daughters, Mrs. Arnold (Sylvia) Keen of Keen Mountain, Mrs. Andy (Judy) Keen of Cedar Bluff and Mrs. Glenn (Glenna) Richardson of Vansant; five sons, Cecil Davis of Rosedale, Mack Davis of Richlands, Jerry Davis of Pounding Mill, and William "Bill" Davis and Clinton Eddie Davis, both of Keen Mountain; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain. The Revs. Ancil Childress and Danny Hess will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Mr. Davis was also preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Lee (Artie) Webb; and a brother, Frazier Davis.
Among survivors are daughters-in-law Stephanie Davis of Richlands and Sandi Davis of Pounding Mill.
Pallbearers will be sons-in-law Arnold Keen, Andy Keen and Glenn Richardson; and friends Ikie Ratliff, Jeff Wade, Jerry Raines, Grady McGlothlin and Lewis Addison. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Vinod Modi, Hugh Cooke, Charlie Simmons, Curtis Hess, Buford Yates, Bill Davis and Ervin Horne.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday in Buchanan Funeral Service.

Lewis A. Dye

ABINGDON -- The Rev. Lewis A. Dye, 69, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., and a son of the late Corbett and Doshia Dye. He retired from Abingdon Oil Co. with 30 years of service and was the former pastor of several area churches.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Snavely Dye; a son, Freddie Dye of Richmond; a daughter, Freda Dye of Richmond; a brother, the Rev. Charlie Dye of Kingsport; a sister, Rachel Nelson of Abingdon; seven nieces; five nephews; six great-nieces; and four great-nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel. The Revs. Kenneth Widener, Malcolm Wansley and Sherrill Dunn will offiicate. Burial will be in Knollkreg Memorial Park.
Mr. Dye was also preceded in death by two children, Lewis Andrew Dye Jr. and Deborah Leigh Dye.
Among survivors is a special friend, Shadi Awwad of Ormond Beach, Fla.
Pallbearers will be Ralph Dean, Eugene Baker, Robert Collins, Henry Harris, James McCroskey, Jack McCroskey, Curtis Fleenor and Gilbert Grubb.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday in Farris Funeral Service.
Memorial contributions may be sent to a charity of choice.

Donald B. Farmer

Funeral services for Donald B. Farmer will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. James Beaver and Allan Hathaway will officiate. Burial will be in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon.
Mr. Farmer, 75, of 20470 Maywood Loop, Bristol, Va., died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
Honaker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rufus T. Franklin Sr.

KINGSPORT -- Rufus Tilden "R.T." Franklin Sr., 97, of 1121 East Center St., died Thursday, March 9, 2000, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center.
He was born in Castlewood, Russell County, Va., a son of the late Shadrich P. and Nancy Franklin. He moved to the Kingsport area in 1919, where he was plant manager of Cherokee Creamery.
Mr. Franklin and his wife were owners and operators of Franklin Motel for 60 years. He was employed with Holston Defense during the 1940s and later became a driver for City Transportation Co. where he was recording secretary for the union. He retired from Aristocrat Dairy in Baltimore in 1963. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Kingsport and Odd Fellow Lodge. He was the widower of Adeline Miller Franklin.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. J.C. (Arlene) Shanks of Kingsport; a son, Rufus T. Franklin Jr. of Knoxville; a sister, Rosa Artrip of Lebanon, Va.; a brother, Woodrow Franklin of Knoxville; three grandsons; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in Carter-Trent Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Ron Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Franklin was also preceded in death by two sisters, Eva Bentley and Della Barger; and three brothers, William Franklin, Landon Franklin and Martin Franklin.
Among survivors are daughter-in-law Alice Franklin of Knoxville; and grandsons Kenneth Shanks of Church Hill, Tenn., James Shanks of Kingsport and Richard "Randy" Shanks of Mount Juliet, Tenn.
Mr. Franklin married Adeline Melinda Miller of Bristol on July 8, 1930.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.

Linda S. Garrett

HAYSI - Funeral services for Linda Carolyn Stanley Garrett will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Haysi Funeral Home Chapel. Elder Roger Fuller will officiate. Burial will be in Stanley Cemetery in Clintwood.
Mrs. Garrett, 43, died Monday, March 6, 2000, in Norton Community Hospital.
Pallbearers will be friends and family.
Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lena M. Hartsock

Funeral services for Lena M. Hartsock will be conducted Friday at 3 p.m. at the graveside in Mountain View Cemetery by Weaver Funeral Home. Pastors Jerry Russell and Edward Swartz will officiate.
Mrs. Hartsock, 82, of Bristol Virginia died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charlie S. Herndon

ABINGDON -- Charlie Scott Herndon, 74, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at his home.
He was born in Abingdon, grew up in Russell County, Va., and Sullivan County, Tenn., and lived most of his adult life in Abingdon. He was a former instructor for Washington County Schools and a retired associate professor for Virginia Highlands Community College.
He received a certificate of machine tool operations from Washington County Vocational//Technical School, where he remained as an instructor for 17 years. He then joined Virginia Highlands Community College as an associate professor of machine tool operation for the next 18 years, retiring in 1987 as professor emeritus. During his tenure, he also acquired numerous undergraduate courses from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, East Tennessee State University and Virginia Highlands Community College.
He was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church, VFW Post 1994, American Legion Post 12, Virginia Education Association, National Education Association and a charter member and past president of Wolf Hills Chapter of the Archeological Society of Virginia. In 1996, he was awarded the Amateur Archeologist of the Year Award by the Archeological Society of Virginia. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Vivian Virginia Glovier Herndon; a son, Charlie Scott Herndon Jr. of Asheboro, N.C.; two stepdaugthers, Barbara Lee Price of Roanoke and Serita Joy Warner of Crofton, Md.; a brother, Robert W. Herndon of Bristol Virginia; two sisters, Tina C. Owens of Wytheville and Elsie Gaynell Hawkins of Bristol Tennessee; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel. The Revs. Bill Rowland and Betty Reiff will officiate. Burial will be in Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood with military rites by Lebanon VFW Post 9864.
Among survivors are a great-aunt, Bessie Casteel, age 102, of St. Paul; grandchildren James Scott Herndon, Jason Todd Herndon, Jeffry Stowe Herndon, Kenneth Scott Warner, Stephen Warner, David Lance Warner, Don Andrew Price, Lisa Annette Shumate and Laura Lee Kauffman.
Pallbearers will be Paul Jackson, Kenneth Shoun, Robert Necessary, Roy Fields, Col. Howard McCord Sr., Dr. Charles Bartlett, John Cornelius and Ian Dye Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons James Scott Herndon, Jason Todd Herndon, Jeffry Stowe Herndon, Kenneth Scott Warner, Stephen Warner, David Lance Warner and Don Andrew Price; nephew Fred Alden Herndon; Dr. John Ford, Dr. John D. Johnston, Dr. James D. Moore Jr., Dr. Andrew Rhinehart, Dr. Emory Robinette, A.L. Mitchell, Gary Thompson, Doug Ogle, Cecil Holmes, Ronnie Frye, Terry Turnmire, Virginia Highlands Community College faculty and members of the Wolf Hills Chapter of the Archeological Society of Virginia.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday in Farris Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 18129 N. Fork River Road, Abingdon, VA 24210 or to Abingdon United Methodist Church, 101 E. Main St., Abingdon, VA 24210.

Thelma N. Hughes

KINGSPORT -- Thelma Lee Nickels Hughes, 84, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center in Kingsport.
She was born in Dante, Va., a daughter of the late Wiley and Myrtle Osborne Nickels. She was the widow of Estle D. Hughes, a homemaker and member of Orebank Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Phyllis Calkin of Kingsport; a son, Robert "Joe" Hughes of Kingsport; a sister, Kathleen Cothran of Boones Creek, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 7 p.m. in Carter-Trent Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. J.W. Depew will officiate. Graveside services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in East Lawn Memorial Park. Family and friends are requested to meet at the cemetery at 12:55 p.m.
Among survivors are son-in-law Charles R. Calkin of Kingsport; daughter-in-law Linda B. Hughes of Kingsport; and grandchildren Nancy Hale Burbridge, Dena Salyer, Andrea Dufour and Shanna Hughes.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday in Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.

Merlin Jackson

MAXIE, Va. -- Merlin Jackson, 70, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, in Buchanan General Hospital.
He was born in Woodman, Ky., a son of the late Albert and Margaret Compton Jackson. He had been a resident of Buchanan County for several years, attended the Old Regular Baptist Church and was a retired coal miner.
Surviving are his wife, Opal Hazel Blankenship Mullins Jackson; a daughter, Merldine J. Deel of Maxie; three sons, Buford Mullins Jr. of Grundy, James Carl Jackson of Vansant and Ronnie Keith Jackson of Belfast; a sister, Goldie Jackson Ale of Howard, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 1 p.m. in Bull Creek Old Regular Baptist Church in Harman by Grundy Funeral Home. Elders Freddy Ramey, Jackie Yates, Howard Daniels, David Blankenship, Frank O'Quinn and Toy Looney will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.
Mr. Jackson was also preceded in death by a son, Amos Gene Jackson.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Burl Ratliff, Burl Ratliff Jr., Charles Bartley, Dewayne Owens, David Deel and Jonathon Deel. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Sexton, Wilma Deel, Johnny Deel, Gary Ratliff and Otis Deel.
Friends may call at 4 p.m. Friday in the church, where services will be held Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.
Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
